Ash's idea of the children's fear "seasoning the meat" was astonishing - the novel says this WORD FOR WORD!
That was pretty prophetic of Ash
I could’ve sworn there was a line in the movie too somewhere. If not then it’s in the next one. But it is in there.
@@Lauren-zx3gx its in the old one!
@@jordangibbish7701 Prophetic? No, it was a coincidence.
Because people deal with seeing crazy things differently. Laughing is his way. He’s not saying yay it’s great I wanna do it lol his first instinct is just that’s crazy and laughs
Good spot on the eyes at the beginning - the novel has Georgie seeing _blue_ eyes because both Bill's and his mother's eyes were blue.
And yes, Beverly's fear was menstruation-related - she didn't want her father to see her as a woman.
Bill Skaarsgard is so amazingly unsettling is this role. That first scene where he’s laughing with Georgie and then his expression just goes dead … it gives me chills so bad I just shake. 😭
His expression reminds me of Keifer Sutherland in the Lost Boys; hes laughing then his expression sobers and with the yellow eyes and teeth it looks very similar
Not really tho
The wink from Bev to Ben was a joke about his love of The New Kids on the Block. “The Right Stuff” was one of their biggest hits, and it was an inside joke that they shared. “Are you sure they got ‘the right stuff’ to fix you up?”
Hannah: "he's referring to her ginger locks" 😍Ash: 👁️👄👁️
Lol brilliant
Pennywise has red hair too you know
Hannah, for one of the 1st times, Ash is 100% correct. Pennywise is using the fears of the children.
Yup, without fear IT can’t feast
That's Ash - 1, Hannah - 637.
Part 2, the germaphobe scene...nailed it!
@godmagnus Hannah Simp 🤡
@Cliffster420 that word has lost what little dumb meaning it ever had.
Bill Skarsgard who plays Pennywise was incredible. All the movements Pennywise makes is really Bill Skarsgard (except shape shifting obviously) . But even when his pupils go different ways , his crazy cartoon look smile is all him.
Also his whole family are famous actors
You both were a bit right on the influence of IT. In the book he would influence people to do evil things, including Bev's dad. She said it was like he had two personalities. But he infected the whole town to turn away from the strange things that would happen and what deaths came about.
It also affected adults to "ignore" the bad things it was doing. (Think back to the old lady in the beginning of the movie)
This is explored more in the sequel, especially the forgetting by the town.
Bev.s Dad was molesting her anyway
Pedo dads usually have two personalities, that's why people never suspect them.
Same goes for the racism Bowers’ dad had towards Mike’s family. One of the things I didn’t like about the movie was how the made Mike’s character very insignificant when he was the archetypal Lovecraftian librarian who picks up on all the creepy happenings around town everyone else is too afraid to acknowledge
This was the highest grossing horror film of 2017, $700 million dollars against a $40 million dollar budget.
Highest grossing EVER I'd assume?
DAYUMN😮
Which is surprising, as it’s very mediocre
@@ct6852 No, not even close to highest ever.
It did extremely well against its production budget, but that is about it.
Also that $40 million in no way covers the advertising campaign which was extensive worldwide and therefore probably more expensive than the entire film production.
@@helios1336 It's sort of mediocre - I ccan see the kernel of a greater movie in there but they neglected to add some set pieces like the giant crow attack or the werewolf that would have made it far scarier.
The actors were decent, still up in the air about Pennywise though - I wasn't even remotely 100% sold on Skarsgard's performance, the malevolence felt very forced at times vs Tim Curry's natural ability there.
I don't know if you guys missed it, or just edited it out. But the absolute scariest part of this movie for me was the old lady behind the boy in the library while he is reading the book (around the 12 minute mark). She stands back there looking normal at first, then the next few times it shows her she is staring at his with a very creepy look on her face. Stuff like that creeps me out big time lol
That scene of the librarian lady got to me too . I wonder why they didn’t have it in the commentary
they must have missed it because you have to look for it, and then when you see it its horrifying and you cant not see it. They just must have been focusing on the kid reading
Love how Hannah always has a problem with any Bully Behaviour 🙌🏾 you say it straight away. You can tell what kind of person you are, you definitely stand up for people ❤
One scene I wished they kept from the book was a kid seeing a giant shark swimming up the canal, after he’d just seen Jaws for the first time. Pennywise using the fear in innocent minds was really creepy.
I know exactly what you mean. I would have loved to see Mike Hanlon being hunted by the giant crow in the barrens. Scared the bejeezus out of me when I first read the book. I think I am due for a re-read of IT. Pretty cool seeing Ash and his ginger navigating the concepts of fear. Very cool tag team they make.
Ah yes i Remember that.
@@zhollamychalis4252yes it would have been interesting if they modernized with instead of the werewolf and mommy with Jason, or Freddy, Michael myers's
@@TheSyconerd Yikes!!!
@nolsee1176 it wasn’t a shark in the book. It was piranhas. The kids scenes were set in the 50’s in the book
3:14 Acccccctually. Nowhere in the nursery rhyme does it say Humpty Dumpty was an egg. That's just something animators and cartoonists added to make an otherwise dark and disturbing poem about someone who burst into pieces after falling from a wall appropriate for children.
Never knew that (and considering what really old nursery rhymes and fairytales, not too surprised lol).
The actor who played IT did that offset eye face with the lowered lip in the acting audition and he got the part. Apparently he would do it to his little brother to scare him when he was younger lol
I think what makes these two films so effective, is the attention to what real fear is. Trauma, loss, abuse, addiction….these are all things these kids are dealing with, and pennywise clearly is channeling trauma in finding fear to hurt them. Nothing is worse than reality, and what adults often do to children and how that follows us in life. The second half is just as good, and a great closure to the stories of all the kids!
Tbf, Ash was ON 👏 IT 👏 with this movie. The eyes, the fear, a true form, ITs influence...like, he caught so much.
This is definitely one of the few modern horror movies that's definitely scary.
When they don't take crazy liberties with a Stephen King story, they usually are pretty damn scary... Or very emotional
Definitely not that scary. Lol. Its more funny than scary. Its an amazing movie, one of my favorite “horrors” but there are far more frightening movies made in the modern day.
@@8JFJK8 I mean that's subjective though, horror movies don't really get me that much, this one had its moments for me but in my case movies like Twister are the scariest films lol
@@omok2 It definitely has its moments, like the drain scene with Georgie at the start of the movie was done perfect. Creepy for sure. Or the scene with the little girl under the bleachers in IT2. These IT movies are a ton of fun but i think Art The Clown in All Hallows Eve & Terrifier frightens me more.
But its just a jumpscare-fest🤔
The power of It kind of places a semi-hypnotic trance on the townspeople. Makes them not want to ask questions and makes them complacent to horrific things. Like, "That's just life in Derry."
Please watch the sequel after this. The story must be complete.
it’s gash.
Its awful and not worth it
@@MovieJustin no it’s not
But the sequel suuuuuuuuuucked
Agreed
I love that you asked if this was “The Shining” ironically both that and “It” was written by Steven King.
She winked because the “Right Stuff” was a New Kids on the Block song (the boy bad Ben had a poster of), it was a nod to the fact that he liked their songs.
and about plot armour protecting kids; he mentions Jaws along with the Shining. A kid got killed in Jaws, which was a gamechanger for movies in the 70s. If a kid can get killed, all bets are off
@@paulinegallagher7821Pennywise in the book also goes for a kid with a shark after the kid had just seen Jaws.. which I thought was pretty cool nod to the fact that Pennywise will kill little innocent kids not just teenagers
In the book, there's a connection to The Shining
Penny wises burn always makes me chuckle.
“I’m not real enough for you billy?!!!”
“It was reaaallllll enough for Georgie 🤣🤣”
Ik Savage lol
In It (2017), when Pennywise lures
Georgie towards the sewer drain
he changes the color of his eyes from
their normal bright yellow to crystal blue
so he looks like Georgie's brother Bill.
Super excited to see Hannah’s reaction to IT! I hope you also show her the sequel. Both movies were very VERY well done, IMO.😊 Also, make sure to show her the movies, “Hostel”, “Hellraiser (not the new remake)”, “Dolls”, and “The Ruins”
Yh was disappointed by the Hellraiser remake myself.
Oee the Hostel trilogy is a golden oldie.
@@mnomadvfx I didn’t watch it. They never should’ve remade it and just re-released the OG version. Hollywood is so Un creative these past 2 decades. Only Disney is making new stuff for the masses while Hollywood just keeps dragging out franchises and remaking stuff that never should be re-made.
The new pinhead in the Hellraiser sequel was actually quite good. More in keeping with the original idea. But the movie was too brief.
Hannah literally says IN THE VIDEO! That she doesnt want to feel sick and feel shitty watching these movies anymore and you basically keep pushing Ash to make content that makes his girlfriend feel uncomfortable and shitty…. You are making ash choosae between you the viewer and his girlfriends well being… Sorry but that behavior is shitty in and of itself mate…
Sweet reaction! Can't wait to see you guys react to Chapter 2 next up! It's so satisfying to see how everything's handled once the gang is all grown up.
One of them doesn't make it though...😢
@@ct6852 Yeah man I know what you're referencing it's real sad 😟
I watched the mini-series as a kid in the 90's and it gave me nightmares. Just when I thought I'd grown out of the fear, they go and remake it, even scarier in many ways.
My little brother needed the drains covered for years while taking baths because he insisted on watching it.
Glad you liked this! In the 90s there was a made for TV movie that took after this book (originally a book by Stephen King). It was pretty good but this movie was also VERY good... now on to Chapter 2 !!!
Tim Curry was scary, but the other actors, especially the woman who played adult Beverley, was awful
Quickly becoming my fav channel ash! I love the humour and banter from you and Hannah! 😂
Quickly!! Oi lets gooo..let me know when we reached it 😂
Stephen King always writes the normal people just as bad, if not worse than the actual villains. Just finished this book and absolutely loved it! Great reaction as always lol y’all are amazing
That’s what makes The Stand my favorite novel of all time. Everything about every character in that book is so goddam HUMAN. Even the total shitbags, like Harold, I hated Harold, but even he, you can understand how he got to be that way
@@mikeydubbs8565 I’ll be reading this after Misery! Haven’t seen the Stand movie yet so it’ll all be fresh info for me, can’t wait!
Beverly's fear of blood is some of the most brilliant symbolism in recent movie memory. Just perfect.
I like how in the lake scene, when they are swimming, there's a little reference to Pennywise biggest archenemy and kids ally in the book, the Turtle (long cosmic story)
I saw IT pt 1 in IMAX with my friends the week it debuted. We were in a packed theater and seated right in the middle. It was a true white-knuckle horror film the whole way through. I'll never forget the shock when Georgie's arm was bitten off and they showed the whole thing and lingered on him trying to crawl away. It was just incredible.
Sounds like a great experience!
you guys are so funny! just found your channel and subscribed 😊
also, at 17:47 Beverly wasn't necessarily flirting with Ben, she was sharing their inside joke of using song titles from the band New Kids on the Block when talking with him. the wink was to help him realize without giving it away to the other kids. although he does have a crush on her so he probably saw it that way anyways 🤷♀️
Been watching your reactions for several weeks. You two have fantastic chemistry. Your show is bound to grow. Greetings and salutations from Detroit, Michigan USA
My brother jay!! Proper appreciate you man ❤️
If you go back and watch the film again carefully, you will see Pennywise is appearing in many scenes in the background watching the children. Sometimes he will appear as a picture on a brick wall, or he is dancing around in the background at the fair. He is always watching them.
Cool fact also, the scene with the projector was the first time the children ever saw what Pennywise looked like. Those are genuine screams :D
The triangle balloon thingy is pointing down yet it's still floating
We all float down here
SYMBOLISMS🗿
"Right stuff" when patching his stomach was a New Kids on the Block reference.
Great reaction! The original "It" scared the living daylights out of me, back in the day. Coudn't sleep the next nights. Nowadays, many horror movies later, I don't even flinch at jump scares anymore. That actually annoys me while watching scary movies like that.
Exact reason I didn't like this movie. The original film was very close to the book apart from the attrocious ending 🤣 this one has too many "cheap scares" and Tim curry's pennywise is unbeatable
@@smp6565 Tim Curry’s penny wise wasn’t that good you’re blinded by nostalgia
@@matthewperez9358 I've rewatched the original after watching this for this reason. I tend not to rely on nostalgia with things I'm passionate about. My personal opinion is that the kids did an amazing job, but skarsgards pennywise is just slightly too comical and "over done" for me🤷♀️
hes right about it influencing people hes actually influencing the whole town. Thats why the town don't do nothing when they see bullying or care about kids in general. Notice how all the parents are either absent from there lives or an enigma on them.
Just wanna say that I find it remarkable that Ash, a man enjoying tough fight scenes and such, has this empathy/sense for something like the symbolism with the bloody bathroom/fear of a girl in puberty.
Not wanna say men are not usually sensitive or something.
But to pick up on that as a person who hasn't gone through female puberty is awesome IMO
:)
I think most men are sympathetic to menstrual struggles; I keep pads in my medicine cabinet for just in case. As much of a douche ash comes off as sometimes (I think his laughing comes from being uncomfortable, though), I can see him being sweet during that time for his parter “you need somethin’? Can I get you chocolate?”
@@mikeydubbs8565 Tbh I have been thinking...and realized that is most men are more sympathetic than other women :D starting with gym teachers early on in school
Male teacher: "Do you need a break? No it is fine for you to miss gym today!"
Female aka drill seagant gym teacher: "Pain? Get used to it. Stop whining and RUN!!" :D
Men can fear female puberty too, I guess. I mean, it was written by a man!
I sometimes think Ash takes Ritalin on a recreational basis. LOL. He gets so excited by plot twists and jump scares.
Bro is so unintentionally funny
Bro plot twist turns me on 😂
The houses you were talking about at the start was actually filmed here in Ontario Canada near where I live, and the actual garage scene was in my friends garage no joke!
Beverly and Ben were quoting New Kids on the Block (80s/90s boy band) song titles back and forth to each other as an inside joke because they are both fans.
That was crazy fun to watch with y'all. I can't wait for the next Harry Potter film.
Child gets arm eaten off. Ash laughs.
Child gets stomach carved with a knife. Ash laughs.
Dad emotionally abuses son by shooting a gun at his feet. Ash laughs.
Son kills dad with a knife. Ash laughs.
Ash may in fact be a total sociopath.
Ok damn it I just subscribed because of Hannah's reactions. Good Stuff People.
Happy to see your numbers are at 71.1K as of this viewing. I always love y'all's reactions! ♥IT is a masterpiece!
Love you two. Chemistry off the charts. Let’s see Part 2.
Nice pick up on the eye color changing early on Ash, that theme is used in several Stephen King novels (i.e the dark tower series). In IT (if I'm not mistaken) Pennywise is a vampire of sorts, but instead of feeding on blood IT feeds on fear. So IT changes it's eye color to appear more human to Georgie to lure him in.
i think hes actually meant to be some sort of Alien
When they were treating Ben's wounds and Beverly asked him, "Are you sure they 'got the right stuff?'" She wasn't exactly flirting. It was more of an inside joke between the two of them because it was a reference to him liking the boy band New Kids On The Block. In the song "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" it says "you've got the right stuff, baby..." It's also why he said, "Please don't go, girl." When they first meet and she finds out he likes TNKOTB. That's another song by them.
I grew up on the Tim Curry version from the 90's. This one is cool too. Each have their own charm. This is one of my favorite Stephen King books as well... Shit it's probably my favorite Horror book of all time. The reason the parents act the way they do is Pennywise has sort of a mental hold over the people of the town. He feeds off everyone. Ash... You're right about fear seasoning the meat. It actually says that in the book lol
I think the word you keep looking for regarding Eddie is Hypochondriac. It the phobia of yeah, getting sick, being around the sick, or getting a terminal illness.
You guys are great and you've been the first reactors that finally convinced my gf to watch these reactions with. You guys should really do a reaction to Van Helsing. It's a horror movie for Halloween, it's got some soft spots that Hannah would appreciate and some super badass masculine themes that Ash would totally be all in on. Keep up the good work guys

Someone probably already pointed this out but Beverly’s, “Right stuff” comment was an inside joke to Ben because it is the title of a New Kids on the Block song, which is a callback to an earlier scene. She wasn’t flirting with him in that instance.
Hannah saying to herself: *It’s Just Ribena*

I think houses in America are generally newer since we don't have thousands of years of architecture to build on to. It's funny because when I watch films set in the UK I always think your buildings and houses are beautiful, especially in the countryside.
I was wondering if I was the only one who laughed at Ash's house comment. We don't all live in giant houses, I promise. xD
Not in New England. We do have prefab cul de sacs, but they are usually relegated to one section of town. Most of the houses, at least in my area, are from colonial or Victorian periods. Creaky, spooky frigging things, sometimes with Underground Railroad hiding spots down cellar
@@PheOfTheFae I know, I spit out my Powerade when he said that. haha He thinks movies accurately represents life of the average American. That house, depending on where it's built can easily be 400k to a million dollars. haha A rich family no doubt rented that house to be filmed to a studio. Stranger Things & Breaking bad have a more accurate depiction of the average middle class family home in America.
@@FEARNoMore All those John Hughes films (apart from Pretty in Pink) have people living in massive houses. Home Alone, Ferris Bueller, they all live in mansions
@@paulinegallagher7821 Yeah, tv shows & movies tend to choose locations where homes are the "ideal" Often mansion types or early American styles with a lot of wood or fancy large studio with brick/wood. It's prettier to watch I guess than stucko, composite paneling 70's, 80's era homes. lol
Hannah's hair is winter fire, January embers.
One of my all-time faves...
17:58
Ash: "I hope she goes with him."
Hannah: "They're all about eleven."
Narrator: "If only they knew..."
Fun fact: Bill Skarsgard (aka Pennywise), actually PHYSICALLY did that spooky thing where one of his eyes just dips off with absolutely NO "special effects" (or CGI, etc...)
Anyway,, Bill HADER (aka Richie Tozier), didn't know that, and when he told Bill SKARSGARD (Pennywise) just how scary he thought that effect was, Skarsgard said "Oh like THIS?!" ...and just DID IT (out of nowhere) scaring the absolute $HIT out of Hader!!🤣👍
This is EASILY the most entertaining reaction I have seen to this movie. Plz never stop
Now it's time for part 2. This was a fun one!
Girls don't have to kiss boys out of gratitude. I was once tried to instill a sense of guilt for something like this, it's terrible.
I really liked the reaction, it's funny and scary, I love this movie.
Ash cracks me up with his expressions and reactions 😂
I think there was something in the book (it’s been a minute since I read it) where the reason IT chose Derry was because the adults tended to look the other way. Thereby making it easier for IT to terrorize the children.
Ash chalk one up in the win column for for you on this one. You were all over the symbolisms.
We passed the 70k mark guys, Onwards to 140k! Congrats!
The clown was played by Bill Skarsgard him and his whole family are gifted actors amazing talents! His dad played in "Good will Hunting". A Swedish family pretty much if you see Skarsgard in the list of actors it's worth seeing. His older brother played Floki in "Vikings". Steven King is a great writer it's either a homerun or a wtf? The bit in the beginning with the Sombre, spooky piano music only to reveal it's the mum playing is really cute/funny, and does a fantastic job of hinting at how messed up the adults are
Pennywise: We all float down here. Yes, we do. We all float.
Ash: Oh my gosh, symbolisms!
Pennywise: ... What?
Ash: The large forehead, and the dancing, and the balloons! How many are there? 97, 98, 99... 99 red balloons! It's symbolisms!
Pennywise: (confused as f*ck)
Ash: *SYMBOLISMS!*
The reason the adults are creepy is because one of the major themes of this book is Childhood trauma. "It" is an allegory of such trauma personified as a living murderous being.
Pennywise will kill anyone of any age but he targets children because they "believe" whereas adults grow up and stop believing.
Humpty Dumpty never mentions an egg. It was actually truly based on a cannon ball. Supposedly, people don’t know where the idea of an egg came from.
i don’t know if you realized but most of the victims are children because their fears are “easy to create” (dark places, clowns, monsters, etc). Unlike adults, who fear “superficial” things, like loneliness, the loss of a loved one, so it’s harder to recreate it.
IT prefers the taste of children. They taste much better when they are afraid.
I'm a certified grown up and any one of those ITerations would have sent me into a fear coma.
Beautiful American homes, except its mostly Canada :) I live in Hamilton which is near Toronto, Ontario Canada and IT 1 & 2 was mostly filmed here as are many movies!
Almost all of Guillermo Del Toros movies were filmed in my neighborhood. The Shape of Water, Crimson Peak, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark etc. A few other Stephen King ones as well.🎈🎈🎈
Isnt that where they filmed the Road to Avonlea as well? loved that show as a kid
@@paulinegallagher7821 I think that show was filmed in Uxbridge ON. :)
For the record, this story takes place in Maine. Many of the homes in the northeast are notoriously large and beautiful as you saw in the opening scene with Bill and Georgie. But it's important to note that they don't represent the majority of the country. Sadly, most of us are jammed together in tight quarters, tiny apartments, etc. Especially in the larger metropolitan cities. Rising housing costs and low wages makes it incredibly difficult to find good places to live.
I live in Maine and the houses are pretty in many areas, but a lot of the houses are old, built when indoor bathrooms were a luxury, so only one bathroom, lol.
You obviously don't live in the real world if you think most people in the US live in those shitheap cities with everyone packed in together so close.
@@zdeeloo6985 Good to get that inside knowledge though lol Out here mythbusting
Most of New England is like that. We have our new neighborhoods, but usually those are where yuppies who didn’t grow up in town live, and they are usually on the outskirts in the marshes. The natives usually live in the creaky old colonials and Victorians, the ones that aren’t museums. You can’t paint your house a certain color if the Historical Society puts the kibosh on it
@@mikeydubbs8565 Cool! I didn't want to speak for everyone without personal experience, but that's interesting to know. I love those beautiful old houses.

Great video. Your channel is in my top 5 favorite movie reaction channels.
Please do part 2, and maybe the original miniseries from 1990, with Tim Curry as Pennywise
Subscribed yesterday. Great channel. You need to watch the second IT as it is bonkers and hella fun.
"He needs so many toothbrushes... :) You guys slay me.
The fist time that I watched this movie I was just like Ash “kids are not save in this, I’m in”
I thought it was going to be toned down because they were kids.
Tim Curry was iconic as Pennywise in the television version in the 80s, and Bill Skarsgard had to pull it off with his turn. Both Pennywises were the best thing in both versions, including the weaker sequels or adult versions. The adult storyline wasn’t as engaging as when they were kids; however, the film version is better than its TV counterpart.
Ash was shocked that Georgie was killed off as a kid in a horror movie, but this was in the book by Stephen King. IT (2017) is much more gruesome than the two-parts TV version. Ash might be interested in The Blob remake (1988), where there is no mercy just because you’re a child. Also, another Stephen King adaptation where a toddler was killed off is the classic Pet Semetery (1989), and Miko Hughes did a fantastic job.
It is connected to The Shining. In the book it mentions that the chef at The Black Spot club is the guy at The Overlook Hotel.
When Hannah is shitting herself she doesn’t seem to be able to work out what’s happening. Ash you nailed it this time. Need to keep a score. 🤣 Trainspotting is worth a watch.
Oiiiiiiiiiiiii getting big headed now 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Behind the scenes, Bill was a real one. He always made sure the kids were comfortable working with him while in character and urged the directors to stop if the kids were frightened.
Hey Ash, as a fellow Robin Williams, I humbly request you and Hanna to watch What Dreams May Come
Love that film. It's highly underrated.
when this came out i worked in one of those movie theaters that serve food and drink to your seat during the movie, and the amount of times i accidentally jumpscared people by dropping off a refill of popcorn was amazing
pennywise does in fact influence the adults to ignore what's going on so he can prey on the kids in the town with ease. also i believe all of kings books are in the same universe.
