If you are still faced with problems. DO THIS.
2 reasons why you probably faced the same problem,
1. you must type "after effect" in full on your start button, make sure you type that in full and don't click on the after effect icon you see without typing "after effect" IN FULL first on the start menu.
2. then make sure you hold down ctrl, atl, shift till you see the message pop up,
this will definitely work if you follow this procedure, cos I also faced the same problem till I did this

The solution did not work for me in the Mac system. Is there a solution??😥
When i hold alt+ctrl+shift and click aftereffects. it said "allow this app to make changes to your computer" thin i click ok but its the same problem. The preference reset window does not appear.Plis help
for those of you who haven't figured it out, here goes:
he is telling you how to do it right...i'm assuming that many of you are holding down ctrl alt and shift while CLICKING after effects, and then LETTING GO of these.
try this:
START after effects (DO THIS QUICKLY THOUGH), and RIGHT AFTER CLICKING, hold down ctrl alt shift, and then you WILL see the prompt you see in the video pop up.
DELETE the pref file (as he mentioned in the video), and WAIT........
SUCCESS!!!
I was having trouble too. it just wasn't working.
Also, IF this isn't working at first, then you (WIN 10 users) can go into:
** NOTE: ONLY DO THIS IF THESE STEPS DONT WORK....AT FIRST **
>> windows security"
>> "virus and threat protection"
>> "ransomware protection" at the bottom
>> click on "manage ransomware protection" underneath it.
>> click on "allow an app through controlled folder access", and say yes to the pop up prompt.
>> look to see if "AfterFX.exe" is in this section. IF NOT, that's ok...continue with this:
>> click "Add an allowed app" at the top. in IT'S drop down menu, click on "browse all apps."
>> search through (if you installed this program without changing anything) "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects 2020\support files" and browse to find "After FX", and choose it.
>> you SHOULD see it added to the allowed apps.
THEN, DO THE STEPS IN THIS VIDEO....and, if you did it right:
SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!

On Windows, Ctrl+Alt+Shift Did not work. The right combination is Ctrl+Alt Gr+Shift

2020 FIX: Hold the CTRL Key on the RIGHT side of the keyboard, while pressing Shift+Alt on the LEFT! No idea how it works, but it fixed it for me after hours of research!

IMPORTANT NOTE: To fix the issue of Ctrl+Shift+Alt click not working in After Effects, you can try pressing Ctrl+Shift+Alt and then right-clicking with your mouse.

BTW, THANK YOU DUDE!! You saved me MUCH frustration and angst....I'm a HUGE tech nerd, and can USUALLY fix most issues....but this one was a REAL head scratcher...or rather, pop head off and toss it out the window...s 10...lol!!
Still didn't work, the same error appears after the splash screen even after deleting the preferences file.

SORAKH HIKARI I know on Windows that the Ransomeware protection could also cause the issue. Turning off Ransomeware protection may help. Could also be an antivirus software issue as well, temporarily disabling could also be worth testing

MN ice are you on windows? If so you may to go into Ransomeware Protection and temporarily turn off “Controlled Folder Access”.
After new Windows update this way of solving problem unfortunetlely doesn't work
