All About Garlic Scapes

- Garlic Scapes are a treat that garlic growers get to enjoy in late spring to early summer. In this video, I'll talk about garlic scapes and tell you all about them.
Garlic scapes are the curly, green shoots that emerge from the tops of hardneck garlic plants. They typically appear in late spring or early summer, before the garlic bulbs are ready to be harvested. These scapes are the flowering stalks of the garlic plant and are often removed by gardeners to encourage the plant to focus its energy on bulb development. They are also good to eat.
Garlic scapes are versatile in the kitchen and can be used in a variety of dishes. They can be chopped and used in salads, stir-fries, pesto, or as a garnish. Some people enjoy them grilled or sautéed as a side dish. Like garlic bulbs, scapes contain various nutrients, including vitamins C and B6, as well as minerals such as manganese and selenium. Store garlic scapes in the refrigerator, where they can stay fresh for a week or two.

I'm growing garlic for the first time. This is good information for me. Thank you.
You're welcome! Glad I could help!
Yep I like the scapes
Just wish there were more of them.
Thank you!! I just started elephant garlic & can’t wait to see these pop up. ❤
I hope they do well for you. It's a fun type of garlic to grow.
Nice video, mate. Hope you having a nice weekend. Stay blessed. Cheers :)
Thanks a bunch! It's a little chilly here. Have a great weekend!
❤❤❤
Great info Mr Jim. I like to freeze garlic scape pesto and garlic scape butter. Good stuff. I hope you’re health is improved and you’re enjoying your holidays.
Thank you! Having that pesto and garlic scape butter for later is awesome. I'm doing much better now with my health. I'm ready to go for next spring. Hope you have a great holiday season also!
Happy weekend buddy!
Thanks! Happy weekend to you too!
Godd morning . Great video explaining the difference between hard and softneck garlic. I also grow softneck garlic. It was last year after I had planted grocery store garlic (which was hardneck) that I learned the difference. I didn't get any bulbs larger than a small green onion. I bought softneck this year, I hope I get a good harvest. I can hardly wait. Take care and have a great weekend. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Good morning! Thanks! The thing I noticed about the hard neck garlic is that the cloves are so large. Hope we both have a great garlic year next year.
Awesome information. I like the way you described the taste. Hopefully, I will be able to get some scapes this time around. This is my first time growing hardneck garlic, but my second time growing garlic. I have 5 containers of garlic planted, and all of them have sprouted EXCEPT for the hardneck vaiety. I'm getting a bit worried 😟
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! I sure hope your hardneck garlic comes up. Sometimes if you plant it late, it can take quite a while to come up. I've had that happen a time or two.
@MidwestGardener I hope that's the case! Thanks for the support! 🙂

Good Morning Jim - Have not had any of my garlic produce scapes as I grow mostly soft neck varieties but good to know what you can do with them. I assume the scape would produce a flower/seed of some kind if left uncut to mature. Hope you have a wonderful weekend..
Good morning Sue! I let a few grow, and they produce small bulbils. Hope you have a great weekend!
I turn mine into powder.
Interesting! I never thought of doing that.
@@MidwestGardener They sell it that way at the farmers markets here. My wife and I usually pick some up to sprinkle on food over the winter. Growing a couple types of garlic now here in Northern BC Canada.
@@drutter Nice! Good luck with your garlic. Spring will be here before we know it.
