  • If you're interested in growing your own garlic, here are some basic steps to get you started:
    1. Choose the right garlic type: Garlic comes in different varieties, such as hardneck (cooler regions) and softneck garlic (warmer regions).
    2. Timing: Garlic is typically planted in late autumn or early winter, allowing it to establish roots before going dormant.
    3. Prepare the soil: Garlic prefers loose, fertile soil. Apply an inch layer of compost during planting.
    4. Planting: Separate the garlic bulb into individual cloves and plant them with the pointed end facing up, about 1-3 inches deep below the top soil level and 6 inches apart.
    5. Caring for garlic: Water the garlic once or twice a week or more during dry periods. Mulching can help conserve moisture and suppress weed growth. Any scapes or flower stalks that emerge should be removed to redirect the plant's energy towards bulb formation. Garlic scapes are a delicious delicacy.
    6. Harvesting: Garlic is typically ready to harvest in mid-summer when the leaves start to turn yellow and dry out. Carefully dig up the bulbs, brush off excess soil, and allow them to cure in a cool, dry place for a few weeks before storing.

Thank you so much. I'm in 5b. Love growing garlic, I remember when I first grew garlic. I didn't get a good harvest, but kept planting every year and each time it got better and better. Garden grown garlic flavour is really amazing!

Roughly about 8-9 months. Though I did try to plant a softneck variety in Spring and I harvested within 3 months.

Garlic are heavy feeders, other than that first layer of compost, what do you feed your crop of garlic and how often?

In Spring time when they sprout back, I will feed with either compost or a balance fertilizer with npk 4-4-4
