I came here for Alan Rickmans voice but was instead moved and inspired by what this extraordinary piece of monologue has to offer. The message still stands today.
I just watched this and found myself enlightened so much. I heard him giving advises to young actors once, to go outside, to live, to feel the world, to enlighten themselves, to have opinions about society, gather information and that's how they will have the ability to react whatever script they read. The thing I love bout Alan is because he's not just an actor, he is a political being, an intellectual being and he knows life. And he acted upon it. I admire it very, very much
This is absolutely brilliant. Without a doubt, he was one of the most gifted actors this world has ever seen, and will ever see. A rarity that man was.
It is actually a great sermon, it is oriented towards another era but that does not prevent it from developing a reflection on our time, a great interpretation of the great Alan Rickman, it inspires total silence, there is no way to object to his interpretation, and the puppy so sweet, thanks for sharing
how could he do this scene? no one could have memorized all that, there couldn't have been cue cards, just mind boggling great acting skill, the great alan rickman, why did he have to be taken from us so soon ?
As far as I can recall this was the first performance I saw of Alan Rickman. At the time I thought it was memorable, and 25 + years later it so remains. May he be remembered as far more than Hans Gruber or Septimus Snape.

So powerful So true and relevant today If this was shown today on TV there would be an outcry from the fundamentalist, from the right , from the bourgeoisie left I stand with every word he speaks with such integrity....would that the vision this soliloquy speaks of be made real !!
Next year we celebrate the 5th anniversary of this video upload. :) And people are still coming and watching. Thanks everyone. Didn't expect it may be useful.
zvukoper oh, it's useful, alright. Peter Barnes and Rickman were , if not collaborators early on, certainly political marchers side-by-side. there are a dozen points in this speech where the two have put their case, eloquently
"Does it follow that I reject all authority? No. But I always keep my hat on in its presence."(edited) "In the matter of bread, I consult a baker; in the matter of boots, a bootmaker; a house, a builder; for special knowledge, I apply to a specialist. But I don't allow the baker, the builder, or the bootmaker to impose their authority over me. I listen to them with the respect they merit--if any--but I keep the right to judge, criticize, and censure. Why should we treat politicians of any stripe, royal or revolutionary, any different?"
Well..we already celebrated 5 years of this video and we are still here:-)..In this video Alan is absolutely brilliant! Not all things, which he has done,I like. But this one is my favorite!
This is beyond superb. Never saw it before. Indebted to you, zvukoper. This is an example of why YT is the supreme medium of our age ; high minds uploading high art.

Magnificent. The brilliance and of course the level of work to produce this magnificent gift here. What an amazing actor. His breadth of expression and control in his voice and face are truly masterful .RIP
Thank-you. Amazing! Listen closely from about 16:15 onwards. The character Alan is playing becomes Alan, in many ways. These are some of the things Alan Rickman really believed in!
This is like the dozenth time I've watched this and only now do I realize. When he talks about feeling like a dead man walking, the only music in the entire piece cuts in. And it's the sound of harps.
How the fuck do people remember this much monologue? It's a bit awe inspiring to me how people can remember entire passages of text to perform plays and stuff, no editing to check your lines or catch your breath or take a minute to remember what's next. Just phenomenal
His Methodist background had a role to play.. he had played a preacher more than one time and he was in Dogma.. there were some other things he did. He made a good preacher though I must say😇
This is wonderful, such brilliant acting and a riveting depiction of Jacques Roux, the legendary leader of Les Enragés. Roux was without doubt the precursor of Karl Marx. My only criticism is of the script writer, who wrongly calls Marat's widow Catherine. Her name was Simone Évrard, and she and Marat were never officially married.
+WeveNever BeenAlone such a loss, awesome actor. :( Britain lost many good men in the last few months, all aged about 70 and all had cancer :( Kilmister, Bowie, Rickman. What's going on? :(
@@zvukoper it is said in psychology that if we control ourselves too much and set ourselves rules (with e.g. words such as 'should' 'shouldn't' 'must' 'have to' etc. you can see Nonviolent Communication - it has quite a great discussion about how these words harm ourselves and others) we oppress our aggressivity (which is our life force and what's alive in us really) and end up attacking ourselves, costing ourselves energy, and people who judge themselves too much very often end up with cancer - one of the worst attacks on oneself, probably just other than suicide :'( (just to be clear, aggressivity doesn't mean that we attack people all the time, it's just that if there is no control and just acceptance we eventually grow out of it and don't need to control ourselves to not attack people - it just naturally turns into passion and confidence when matured - I have actually read parents' records of their parenting about how they accepted their children's attacks and never tried to control them and the outcome is as said above. We do see a lot of those in Alan too. He did always mention the word 'release' when asked about how he felt about playing his villains.) So I thought this wouldn't happen to Alan since it looks like he lived it all out in his films and theatre performances - but maybe he did spend more time with his self-control than with giving himself freedom and acceptance :'(
@@zvukoper On Bowie, you just gotta know what awaits you. Bowie was a chain-smoker, as was director, Stanley Kubrick, not that they could have done a whole lot about it. Such is the curse of drug addiction.
Who is he preaching to in this scene? Not one glance at the audience thus far at 13:30, only the Preacher's dog. Surely the whole speech is not just for dog's benefit?
I think the church is actually empty. The whole speech may just be for HIS benefit, a final venting of his spleen before his death. Though since this is the church he's been serving for decades, he may not need to look to the audience.

Not only is Alan beautiful, his spirit and passion is as well. This was magnificent.
One of the finest soliloquy I've seen and heard. Alan Rickman left us a gift.
