Exactly my thoughts Edit1- well not exactly. I mean he is competitive and he had a bad start so he found an excuse to withdraw. He always finds excuse.. like when he lost a classical match because opponent wore a wrist watch which distracted him. He is a great player and very competitive.. all good.. but I would rather believe is any theory that suggests he found an excuse.. I mean the question is.. would he have withdrawn had he been leading the tournament or just complied with the rules when warned about it?
I mean he lost to 17 year old Nodirbek in 2021, nothing happened. Lost to 18 year old Pragg on this Year's Norway Chess, nothing happened. But you're free to convince yourself to believe in that.

Appreciation for Pragg too. He was the only one who had Murzin in a lost position. Pragg had shaky start on day 1, but he played excellently on days 2 and 3, and was this close to being among the top 3 or even the winner
@michaelmassaro4375 ya i know. We have all had games where we had a huge advantage, almost a won position and then some random shock tactic springing up out of nowhere to ruin it all. Also, i dont know why no one bothered to check f3 as a move for Pragg at any point. Not even the commentators, and not even Agad. The only issue for Pragg was the back rank throughout the endgame. F3 could have sorted out some of the problems i feel. I mean isnt f3 a move worth looking at?

It also makes that pawn a long-term weakness since the bishop can’t defend it, you’ll have one of your rooks pinned down. Agad did explore f4 only after playing f7 (the missed win for Pragg): you could play f3 in that position because it’s mate but the pawn really belongs on a dark square.
Agad covered the story of Volodar's winning performance quite extensively, nice to see it. It was a good pairing for Volodar Murzin in the last round. However, if you check Grigoryan Karen's results - he finished in the 9th place (winning against Wei Yi, Mamedyarov Shakhriyar to name a few). Winning would give Grigoryan chances to be winner himself, or at least get into top 3, so it actually was a tough one. Except maybe from first round it was games against strong opponents for Murzin, and he proved himself getting performance rating of 2881 (it was 2904 after 12th round). Incredible tournament for this young player! Also very nice to see Alexandr Grischyuk claiming 2nd place and proving himself strong on this format. Kind of funny that Alexandr is known to take time to think in classical (remember that 1 hour for 1 move?) and getting very low on time. And still he shines in fast time controls. A bit too fast draw with Dominques in last round, but it seems they both were ok with it, having a nice chat after the game. Nepo had slow start, trailing around 20th or maybe even 30th place and then making it to top and getting 3rd is not too bad for him either. Personally I like to see these players on top and exactly in this order. Winning is especially great for young Murzin.
Grischuk and Ding seem to have similar methods of utilizing their time haha. In classical format, they both spend way too much time early, but play really well under time pressure. In faster formats, both are incredibly formidable. It's like if you give them too much time to think, they don't know what to do with it!
I know that this channel has probably a lot of new viewers, but does someone remember the title of the video showing some old game on channel many years ago where one player put something in sugar and drink it during the game. I believe that there should be some excellent subscriber lurking.
Thought Jeansgate was the story of the tournament. Then comes the second youngest rapid champion at 18 . Another 18 year old plays A4 against Nakamura and wins . However , the women's section proved "No country for only old men , not old women" 😊 . Edit :- All the other podium finishers in both women and open sections are above 30 . Nepo , Grischuk and his wife Kateryna Lagno , Ju Wenjun and Koneru Humpy . Perhaps there is hope for the older generation after all . 🙂

The lessons taught to Volodar by the legends of chess a few years ago -- Polar, Kramnik and Gelfand -- was not waisted! Cheers, and to that effort. We will probably see more of those young masters here as a result, and much more of Murzin too!
Murzin has amazing potential. I think within 3-4 years many of these youngsters will start beating magnus consistently. The magnus era will finally end.

The Magnus dress code scandal seemed to steal this young man's thunder, so to say (we'll never know what MC might have done); Ranked 146 and at 2588, the 18 year old comes out of nowhere and plays a grueling 13 rounds with about 90 other players including the biggest names and ELO's in chess, does not lose a game and wins the event - incredible. Bravo! CODA: some believe that in the endgame the King, as a fighting piece, is stronger than either a Knight or a Bishop...I don't know what the super computers say.

It's a shame Carlsen's Drama Queen BS kind of over-shadowed the tournament. This is the same whine-fest we got when he accused Hans Moke Neiman of cheating over the board. Carlsen played badly, lost to Neiman, a player he should of handled easily, so he created drama. In this tournament, he was playing badly and created yet another drama. At 34 years old, he's old enough to know the rules and should be mature enough to follow them. Instead he's just playing silly games.
It really is so unbecoming of chess that the players are solely reliant on these substandard prizepools for their income. We end up with situations like yesterday, where no one is even playing to win the damn tournament. So so so bad if chess ever wants to become a game people want to watch
Its not mandatory to rely solely on chess for income. Yes it was disappointing to see people going for quick draws, i mean the prize money is already quite paltry to begin with, what's the incentive to make draws, its not like it will make a huge difference to the final check.

Oh man, I hated when the Schvenshikov opening was in fashion. It's so _concrete_. Technically I think this was a Pelikan that transposed into a Schveshnikov, but it's been a while since I've been up on openings. I can go sniff around the ECO index that every copy of chessbase has, but so can anyone else. That game reminded me of a lot of my games computer post analysis, especially when I'm not really into chess: at the time it feels like I bound my opponent in iron bands of logic, and the computer's like "nope: he could have turned the position against you here and here, and wiped out your advantage here, here, and here. And also here. Congratulations on coming out on top of a mutual blunderfest!" And those aren't even the worst -- the worst are when there's a decisive stroke that stays on the board for like six moves because nobody sees it, and eventually it goes away for reasons other than either player noticing it was there.

Though his TB1 was really good so chances were quite slim. And as we saw everything worked out perfectly. Also note that his opponent in last round took the same approach as they made a draw very quick.

There's only one person that Volodar hasn't played yet. That is Magnus Carlsen. Without Magnus, he would go on winning the rapids.

Why did Grischuk throw away his chances with that early draw? Didn't get that at all...
to minimize risks. Victory doesnt guarantee him 1st place, draw at the same time guarantees him 2nd. Loss could throw him out of top3...
