  • How will Chinese kids look at you? Will they be surprised if you speak Chinese? How about if you speak perfectly, will you still be an alien to them? Will the kids react the way you think they will or will you be more shocked than them?

It's because when they say someone is from a country, the say the country and then they add person after. For example 中国 (zhong guo) = China, 中国人(zhong guo ren) = Chinese or 美国 (Mei guo) = The US, 美国人 (Mei guo ren) = American, really works with any country just add 人 (ren), which means person at the end. So in this case when they said 你是什么人?(ni shi shen me ren?) = what person are you?, it's just asking you what country are you from

Japan has less than 1% foreign population, and probably China has similar numbers. The xenophobia is ingrained- at least these kids are sorta friendly about it.

@@GD-xc4wg yeah but if you'd never seen a cartoon or actor in person and then they were right there, might make you a little curious. Tbh people have been touching my hair and asking to clip some off to take to the salon all my life so it wasn't really new, just annoying. Redheads make up about 1% of the world population, so it tracks that anyone who falls under that visibly different 1% (like foreigners in Japan and China and probably Korea) they'd get a lot of attention.

They just call them america person. Which is why she said what person are you instead of where are you from. I mean they do say that too but a direct translation would be more of ' where you come from' some other ways theyd ask where a foreigner is from would be 'you are a person of which country' or simply 'which country are you'

@@-myharlequinnsapphicarch- Indeed, languages are really interesting like that.
This also makes me think of the dialect spoken in my country (I'm from the Caribbean) where, for question words, you'd won't say "when" or "where", but "what time" and "what part" respectively.
"Where is she?" => "What part she is?"
I also like how a lot of dialects influenced by West African languages, the dialect here included, are similar to Chinese in that they don't use an auxiliary before an adjective (zero copula I think it's called).
So, instead of "He is good", it's "He good", which can be directly translated word for word to Mandarin: 他好
