DAMN, this video got into a lot of shit I was not expecting, but it's all connected. When you asked the question of what we can do to stop the impulsive shopping/over-buying, I think it really comes down to our individual minds. Like you said, unfortunately these large companies know how to get the best of us when we feel lonely, sad, depressed, inadequate, whatever it is. Shopping is SO easy now. I think the majority of people are just unaware of how their emotions (or lack of), influence them to shop. I think it really does come down to mindfulness. And I am totally guilty and catch myself online window shopping and ALMOST checking out before I pause and say "Wait...do I really need this? Am I just in the mood to shop because I feel it's going to bring me some sense of happiness? Is this object really going to make me feel better long-term?". I think most people don't ask themselves these questions because it brings up SO much discomfort, and as humans most of us try to avoid discomfort at alllllllllll costs. It is SO much easier to get that instant dopamine spike from shopping, and to keep doing it over and over again (hence shopping addictions), than to actually face the discomfort, and delay that instant gratification to get to the route of the problem. Also something that I've noticed recently is that people don't really borrow things anymore....when I was little I remember my parents and relatives would borrow things from each other all the time and so they didn't need to buy things often. Nowadays I feel like no one does this anymore. I was about to purchase a halloween costume this year and then I remembered that my sis-in-law actually has a similar costume so I asked her if I can borrow it. I didn't end up using it because I got sick and cancelled my party, but anyway I felt good that I didn't waste money on something I would literally wear once. Sorry for the long-winded comment but I had a lot to say on this LOL.
I live for these long comments! Thank you Neelam! Someone else commented that they online window shop specifically to avoid discomfort. It's a coping mechanism for a lot of people I think to avoid their circumstance, almost similar to watching trashy reality TV. Sometimes doing both at the same time 😆
It’s so true, so much of it doesn’t make sense for viewers and advertisers, the only one that wins is the man in the middle. After turning off alcohol and gambling ads, now I get TONS of ads for weird religious cults, sleezy dating ads, and suspicious mobile games (some with really inappropriate ads that there is no way to report) I wonder if they’re actively pushing garbage ads to get people to turn the customisation off or just straight up pay for premium.
100000% they are just pushing people to pay for premium. And if you look at the other comments here, clearly it's working. It's driven a lot of people over the edge. I will not give into that though, I feel like it's just rewarding their awful behaviour. Google already has all my data and abuses it, I don't need to give them my hard-earned money too. Nuh uh 😆 And I also get those ads for like white guru cults. Haven't seen these mobile game ones (I suspect because I don't play any games), but I know my friends have told me about them and they are WILD
Love this video. Very informative. And not only are there more ads but they are longer. Some videos you can barely get through 5 minutes without an ad showing up. The temu ads are especially annoying because of the sheer volume of them.
Yeah I've seen like 5-7 minute long ads 🤯 Those ones are so annoying when I'm washing dishes or cooking because my hands are occupied and I can't skip over them without disrupting what I'm doing.
Interesting insights. I don’t know anyone that likes watching or hearing ads! So what are the solution(s)? I would like to see a World that collectively solves global problems, and perhaps sell ads targeting those issues. It’s all about shifting the paradigm and consciousness. I would rather see 15 secs of do-goodness, Eco-solutions and ways that companies/people are helping or how can we contribute, Commercials are also loud, 10 octaves higher then the programming your viewing. All I can say is thank goodness for the mute button, and our ability to ignore! 🙌
@@containyourlife I agree with you on the ads, if they targeted those issues it would be less annoying. But it’s all shopping. I had premium for a while with no commercials and it was wonderful but they kept raising the price on their family plan so I had to sadly give it up.
@@CasaDuroTinyHomethe amount of times I’ve been in the same predicament and attempted to use my nose to click skips ads…I think I need a larger, more electrically conducive nose!
It's great that you released another video. I love your videos. They are always thought provoking. We have youtube premium. It costs $25.00 per month (I think) for up to five devices. I love it. I don't ever see UA-cam commercials unless the person who created the video has sponsors, and then I skip through those commercials. I think it helps me desire less things. And you also get a few other fearures with UA-cam Premium which I will not bore you with. For only one device i think it's $14.00 per month. A friend of mine told me that there is a way to watch UA-cam videos without commercials and it's free. But i forget what it is. It has something to do with how you type UA-cam into your browser.
When I realized I was having emotional times that I medicated with buying stuff; I meditated on that, I journaled, and I spent a little money on a therapist. Not to say I fixed it completely, but it's so much better now. When I have the urge to 'shop to distract', I am aware of it most of the time, and will browse in a charity store, the used/for sale book shelves in the library, and I keep it at things I use vs a new gadget. Most of the time I tune out ads, and when I don't it's because I'm playing "spot the lie" and picking it apart, or we're making fun of how bad it is. My favorite thing is that we watch a variety of videos from everywhere that the ads start coming in different languages. I'll probably hit a point where I stop watching (movies/tv/videos) for a long time, or decrease it significantly when the amount of ads annoys me.
Ive been getting the remove your adblocker ads and im not a creator and in the UK. and now it has a timer before letting me watch. I assume the next step is to make me remove it before I continue.
Just wanted to say I found your channel through Finding Alternatives. You seem like a cool person. Hopefully that didn't sound too creepy. lol Edit: Also, I agree. UA-cam ads also wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the ad showing up once every five minutes. It seems like it's designed to encourage paying for youtube premium. Heck, I literally purchased premium membership over the weekend because I couldn't take it anymore.
as an addict in recovery i have had multiple days where every single ad 6 videos in a row is for something containing alcohol. had to jump through the stupid little hoop to get them to stop showing me that and now i haven't seen one since. a week later the insane increase in ads started and then i noticed that the webpage was giving me the AdBlock pop up. if i have to take a break from UA-cam until this blows over then that's just what ill do! i know the creators aren't getting a significant increase in revenue because of the ad increases. and im not about to pay for UA-cam premium for this! biggest pet peeve is when i get shown hateful misinformed ads about trans people before and during videos posted by the trans creators im subscribed to. it falls on the creators to figure out its a problem and then block ads that are hateful but there are new ones everyday! and that's only if they even have enough subscribers to unlock the option of changing ad preferences. idk just not about to reward UA-cam with money every month because they show me harmful ads when im literally just trying to watch a video about truth and positivity.
this comment really touched me Carberus, on so many different levels. Thank you for sharing. First of all, I wish you all the strength and sending you love on your road to recovery. "not about to reward UA-cam with money every month because they show me harmful ads" REALLY resonated with me. I got an ad the other day for "the Straight mug" that was like "are you tired of the woke rainbow agenda?" and I was like uhhhh.... What? Know your audience, YT. I will never pay for premium because this was supposed to be a platform where there were no barriers to freedom of expression and building community.
I finally broke down and got UA-cam premium I think that is their main motivation, it just provides them that sweet sweet recurring revenue that isn't tied to other companies ad spend budgets. I've used it to replace my Spotify since UA-cam music comes with it and now use Google podcasts. Best money I have spent to stop the ads while still somewhat supporting content creators.
Same here, I used Adblocker on YT for years and just recently started having the same windows pop up. I never noticed how abrasive the ads are until I tried to watch YT on my work laptop which doesn't have a blocker. Honestly I will probably end up signing up for premium because of the value that I gain from being here but this forced action makes me want to stop using the platform altogether!
im in the uk suffering these pop ups, and i just looked and its £12.99 a month???? more than netflix???? do not fall into youtubes trap at such a crazy price
@poppymason-smith1051 For me, it's well worth it. We don't have Netflix or Prime, so we treated ourselves to UA-cam premium. Not only do you not see commercials, but there are a couple of other features. You can download videos to watch later and that way you save on data. And there is also a music ap, which I use a lot. yeah I totally agree. At least Netflix is making content that they're selling. UA-cam is just profiting off of content other people are producing for them at no cost to them. It's gross to me that they think they are offering the same value.

Yeah for sure. When I was in Portgual all my ads were in Portuguese. I'm sure if you used a VPN you could change the location and see for yourself how they change.
What is going on with the male "member" enlargement ads on youtube now? I'm a guitar player, and I often use youtube instructional vids to learn songs for my band. I get bludgeoned with this shit. "Your girl wants a guy bigger than you" type bullshit. They manage to get a lot in before you can tap the old skip button.
OMG dude I keep getting these WILD ads for like erectile dysfunction treatment, but they never use those words directly, they're kind of beating around the bush with innuendo like "do you want to take those little blue pills for the rest of your life? Your wife is gonna leave you because you can't satisfy her in bed". It's always an AI generated woman on one side with just the mouth moving but the rest of the image is still, and a split screen on the other side with random slime videos? Or like toothpaste tubes being emptied. I don't know if that's a tactic just to keep your attention? They are so uncomfortably gross and absurd.

I pay for UA-cam premium. It works like a charm. BUT I feel I should be reading more, watching more fiction specially as UA-cam pushes short videos that are addictive and have zero value. So, the worse UA-cam gets the closer we are to finally stop using it.
I should have mentioned but I refuse to pay for premium. That's like $20 Canadian/month which is higher than Netflix or Disney who are producing entire movies and TV series. It doesn't make sense
