Yep, definitely, black can mean the darkness of depression, of no light at the tend of the tunnel. Black hole, the black dog, and the dark night of the soul, are other expressions for this sort of state of mind.
"Back to black" is here what is called an "overloaded term" It means or can mean multiple things, all of which amplify the central meaning of the song. Depression ..intoxication (black tar heroin...smoked.(.the lyrics expressly say "puff"..).. the obsession of unrequited / complex love..all of it. The lyrics say " life is like a pipe and I'm a tiny bubble creeping up inside." Expressing a sense of powerlessness against forces of love, abandonmebt, additiction family history/drama, and fate.
For me, going "back to black", in this song, was the antithesis of expressing "you light up my life". Once there was light and now it's not just dark, it's black.
To me black in this song means heartbreak, lonleiness, depression. Listening to this version it also occured to me how close black is to Blake - the name of the man she's singing about. At 5:02 she mentions his name when she sings "I love you much. Blakey it's not enough". During the slow part starting at 6:00 when she keeps repeating the word black, it occationally sounds more like Blake to me. They abused drugs and alcohol together. From what I know they fueled eachother's addictions so he was definately not someone keeping her "clean". Blake was married when they met so Amy was the mistress. I must be getting old... so hard to believe new generations have grown up not knowing Amy, her her music and her story. She died in July 2011 aged 27 - it was as tragic and sad as it was expected given her lifestyle. To me her sound was so brilliant and unique one only comes along once in a century. The previous one being Billie Holliday.
The “Black” that’s she’s referring to is related to a feeling of being lost, and lonely and depressed. Like the line “I’m a tiny penny rolling up the wall inside” meaning her life feels out of control. You should listen to her performance of this song it’s a small concert she did called “The Day She Came To Dingle.” The acoustics are insane and much better representation of her vocal abilities.

That should have been the learning moment of every other singer not to be under the influence while performing.
Amy was very much an in-the-moment singer. She acted out each performance and it was real. She was also, tragically, a drug user, and although that was taken up into her art it finished her in the end - ironically by trying to kick it. One of the greatest jazz artists of our time.
'Black' symbolised to me that she was alone and grief stricken like a widow, who wears black, when he went 'back to her.' This is far from her best performance of this song.

I know this clip well, because it was a live performance at Porchester Hall. She was drinking during the performance, so you're right in that she poked fun at wanting more to drink while performing. Also, the songs she sang, written by her, were ones that caused her more pain, hence, the drinking during the performance. Back to black is a signifier for going back to the vices that helped her cope with (emotional) trauma, so for her that was also drinking. She suffered so much trauma from men, particularly as a child, and then well into adulthood. So even her narcotic usage stemmed from the man who she mentioned in the song - Blake.
I had never heard while she was alive sadly but I finally did I love her voice and her music my favorite is will you still love me tomorrow and many others
She was brilliant. The people she surrounded herself with, including her boyfriend and her daddy, ate her alive. She was a money maker for them when what she needed more than anything was someone to look out for her well being... someone to actually give a shit about saving her. RIP Amy.
She does a Great duet with the Legend Toni Bennett 2 unlikely singers....Tony loved her singing, and she was a big fan of Tony... He also dies one with Lady Gaga
With serious mental illness, in this case depression, often times the black is the hole you crawled out of momentarily when something perceived as happy is gone....coping with whatever mechanism you can find if not getting the help you need.... in this case drugs and alcohol. The relationship she was in was just toxic and ultimately all of it killed her which is never something to praise but something to mourn.
Great, thanks! Love your 'taken abackness' by the first line... lol... Did you go back now and listen to Angelina's improvised lyrics again? Not all easy to understand, but amazing a 10 yr old can reshape the themes accurately.
@@deed5811 There is only one poison. If you have been an addict or ever known one, you know this. The physical substance doesn't matter. Anything is a poison if you poison yourself with it. Edit: what I mean, obviously, is that the only true poison is the addiction itself.
She was a one of a kind. Unfortunately this live performance wasn’t up to her early standards. She was usually high and/or drunk at this point. With that being said, she still sings better than most regardless of what state she was in.
She was an amazing singer and song writer, so sad that she just couldn’t cope with so much that came with her fame. In the UK she couldn’t go ANYWHERE. She did kick drugs in the end - it was vodka that killed her sadly.
When I first heard her I fell in love with her voice and writing ability but I told others she would be dead too soon. But this is absolutely worst version I've heard.
Going back to black meant she was going back to a state of depression. Her boyfriend introduced her to hard narcotics which ultimately led to her death. She was fine with pot. Her boyfriend wanted her to do harder stuff. Then he left, but she was addicted. When she died I was so sad, her music did really make me happy, even if the subject matter might not have been. I really did go back to black for a bit.
Check out her duet with Tony Bennett, "Heart and Soul" - about 2 weeks before Fame, money, alcohol and drugs took her away. Also, acoustic version of Valerie highlights her effortless vocal talent. Sad story as old as time - she was an old soul in a young body and an incredible unique talent 🙏 love your analysis and genuine reactions 💕 the documentary of her life explains most of her lyrics.

Conflicting destructive turmoils? Create the greatest artist.... R. I. P. 💔😢🌹✌
Thank you sir! I’m had never really listened to Amy Winehouse but I loved the song and your reaction. ☮️😎
Angelina’s version of Back to Black’s song was rewrittened & rightly so. But Amy was a fantastic singer📌📌📌
So glad you checked this out.
She was brilliant. The people she surrounded herself with, including her boyfriend and her daddy, ate her alive. She was a money maker for them when what she needed more than anything was someone to look out for her well being... someone to actually give a shit about saving her. RIP Amy.
I like this version because it is so raw and unpolished.
Glad you have the lyrics there in front of you. I could never understand a word this woman sang lol
I love her live version of Valerie. Just casually sitting in a chair killing it.
She does a Great duet with the Legend Toni Bennett
2 unlikely singers....Tony loved her singing, and she was a big fan of Tony...
He also dies one with Lady Gaga
Amy will forever be an special enigma that left too soon. She holds a permanent place to return to.
You have a great radio voice!
This bloke turned out so insightful knowing what we kniw about Amy now amazing insight. GL
Her voice still makes me cry so easily! 😭...Rip to yet another legend who died far too soon! 😔 ♥ x
Great, thanks! Love your 'taken abackness' by the first line... lol... Did you go back now and listen to Angelina's improvised lyrics again? Not all easy to understand, but amazing a 10 yr old can reshape the themes accurately.
when she was at her height of fame with rehab people would joke she was singing about me but thank God I made it through it this far,
Amy was amazing live when she wasn’t so intoxicated, but unfortunate those performances are few and far between.
Yes. Just what I was thinking.
Very sad that she had kicked the other drugs then died of alcohol poisoning 😢
May she rest in peace at last.
@@deed5811 There is only one poison. If you have been an addict or ever known one, you know this. The physical substance doesn't matter. Anything is a poison if you poison yourself with it.
Edit: what I mean, obviously, is that the only true poison is the addiction itself.
i love it anyway
Amy Winehouse. Valerie. While sitting on the couch. Untouchable songbird.
One of the greatest singers in our history of the world. It's a shame she's gone. Addiction is no joke.
Amy was such a talented woman and it's so sad that she left at such a young age..
Gone to soon. Such a beautiful soul and voice. You should listen to her song Valerie.
Please listen to another version of this song or something that showcases Amy's talent, not her addiction.
I love your analysis of the lyrics: very insightful.
This performance is heart breaking 😔 RIP Amy
Amazing voice.
Such a great loss, she was an amazing singer.
She was a one of a kind. Unfortunately this live performance wasn’t up to her early standards. She was usually high and/or drunk at this point.
With that being said, she still sings better than most regardless of what state she was in.
I have not listened to much of her. I feel music first. I cried.
Her studio recording of this is so much better
I agree with other suggesting you should check out “Valerie” by her next…Amy was amazing!
Now go back and watch Angelina’s cover and see how she changed this song from dark to light!
It's not supposed to be light though, defeats the meaning of the song.
I really did go back to black for a bit.
possibly means Fade to Black, a theatrical term to end scenes.
This is raw Amy Winehouse. RIP
She even did an amazing job high as a kite.. Such a tragedy that she had to suffer with addiction to the point of death.
