Yes same here. This episode is in my top 5 The Office episodes for the reason that Michael takes the (literal) fall. Toby being so happy about it is an added bonus.
*Suicide was actually lowkey a running theme. Firstly, the whole reason Ryan was temping was to fill in for the employee who committed.* They brought it up again when his plea for help via employee mental health resources was found in the suggestion box. Michael called him weird, and Phyllis gestured to remind Michael _how_ he passed. Robert Mifflin killed himself. This was made light of at least once, most notably during Jan & Michael’s “Company Picnic” Slumdundermillionaire performance. They’ve later used the term loosely, and overall made light of a dark theme.

I never knew about that original cold opening. It's certainly a darker joke but still the sort of thing Michael Scott would've undoubtedly tried to make light of at some point

@1:25-that's Jim's name on Kelly's board. Now I know with his co-manager position he may not be doing regular sales anymore but that's his name in cursive. Maybe the board is old? Anyway, I love your channel and I have that same shirt you're wearing!
Did Jim do the Facebook costume in a previous year as well? I definitely remember the book face but but I don’t remember ever seeing this Halloween cold opening
Personally the only problem I have with the original cold opening is when Michael calls suicide the "easy way out." That specific little bit just doesn't sit right with me, I don't think it's right to refer to anything about suicide being easy for anyone involved. I otherwise agree that it's a really great cold opening.
Randomly discovered your channel Friday. It finished my work week, made my weekend, and helped me endure Monday. I’m looking forward to your weekly posts now! Thank you so much!!!!
As someone who as attempted suicide on multiple occasions (don't worry I'm significantly better now) it bothers me to no end that they removed that cold opening. The more difficult a topic is to talk about the more important it is for it to be joked about. Learning to laugh at difficult topics when they are brought up comedicly goes a long way to improving your ability to discuss it in a vulnerable way. The idea that a certain type of comedy is off limits due to the offense some have taken with it is unconscinable. Nothing, absolutely nothing is off limits in comedy. All that matters is the venue. Humor allows us to come at a difficult topic from a better place than if that topic were brought up in a vacuum. It's why breaking the ice with humor tends to be successful even if it's a corny joke. It breaks tension and breaths a fresh breath of air into everyone who found it funny. It gets you off edge and into a much more relaxed state. Of course there will be jokes that don't sit well with you or even deeply upset you. But with exposure to the more specific topic that joke is about that you are being reminded of which is what is actually upsetting you, it will become easier and easier. Emotional regulation just like our muscles improves with repetition. As does nearly everything in our lives. The vast majority of people do well with structure in their life structure is really just repetition. Think of it as muscle memory but for our brain. It's why when you are depressed or anxious people tell you to do the thing your body is telling you to avoid. Because it is a fact the more that you do it the easier it will become to do. The more you avoid it, the more difficult it becomes. After you are done with what ever was difficult for you to push yourself through while you may not recognize the fact you actually overcame that difficult situation, your body does. The more you do it the more natural it becomes. You ever see those guys working on oil rigs spinning those chains around each section of piping, moving it into place, locking it in and then releasing the chain? Imagine the anxiety you would feel actually doing that. Knowing if you get caught on anything you will at minimum get an impromptu amputation. Those guys felt that anxiety day one too. Now they can do it without any anxiety what so ever. It brings then no more anxiety than the most mundane thing you do at work. Comedy is extremely important for us to fight for. While it might seem like one of the least important causes to be behind, standing behind the right for a comedian to tell a joke is beyond crucial to a well functioning society.
You left out Erin's costume, which was princess Fiona in her ogre form from Shrek (I'm assuming the first, since she says in s7 she didn't know there were sequels)
I was with my four older brothers and mom years ago (the 80s) at the beach, having our photos taken for my dad for Christmas. The photographer had us (unwisely) stand on a wet surface next to a cliff. I slipped and grabbed my mother's arm, causing her to fall and become injured. My four brothers yelled at me and said several really cruel things. I was 16 or 17, and I was on the verge of tears. They had been bullying me my whole life, and I usually ran to my room. But I had to stay. My mom was fine, but I still remember how awful that day was. I learned many years later that the body reacts in this way to protect itself. We don't make decisions when things like this happen. Our bodies, as with breathing, act on their own.
I don't understand why Michael would go back to the office soaking wet. It literally makes zero sense why he wouldn't go home to change. It's like when characters go to the office just to go drive somewhere else like Niaga or moving Holly.
Nowadays if you say "racism is bad" your show is banned because you said 'racism'. There was a video on the 10 commandments in the bible that was banned cause of the word murder related to "Thou shall not kill".
On the board with sales numbers, that’s not pam. that’s jim, on the bottom it says pamela, and the top salesman is actually andy, on the top it says andrew
I think if you look at how being picked on or bullied by friends or family can bring people to harm themselves it gives an explanation to the cold opening and the lesson mine tries to convey.
I remember watching the first cold opening in a random website but after I rewatched on netflix I never seen it again and I always wondered where was it
I don't think this was forced drama because not only did up to the point where everyone sees the tape everyone has pretty much warmed up to Michael and are already on his side in this situation, when they see that Jim didn't even make an attempt to save Micheal going as far as making such a huge movement away from Michael definitely would motivate everyone to take the stance they did. Not to mention how obvious Jim made it prior to playing the tape that he knew he purposely avoided Micheal.
So, I have never seen this episode without the original cold opening. I have never seen the new one and I’m confused 🤔 With the original cold opening the viewer doesn’t know the story of Michael falling in the pond and doesn’t see the security tape until the middle of the episode, when all of the office staff watch it. Is it different with the new cold opening? PS - Michael with his D in a box is pure gold! 😄
I never understood why everyone in the office hates boss!Jim. Is this because of lazy writing? They wanted to show how everyone loves Micheal or something? C'mon.
I just found and have been watching your videos recently, and I really enjoy your thoughts on the greatest show of all time. I just want to point out that you are using infer incorrectly. Which is funny because you even play the clip of the office characters explaining the difference in one of your other videos. We can infer what they mean when they do or say something. But the characters on the show, or the show itself, isn’t inferring anything. In this video you said “the writing is supposed to infer…” when talking about Jim towards the end of the video, WE can infer from the writing. But the writing is implying. And from the implications we can infer what they mean.
That wasn’t meant to be disrespectful or to criticize your videos. I really enjoy your videos. A lot. Some of the best office break down videos out there. Just some helpful advice for you to take or not take going forward. Keep up the great work 🙂

@@Mulverine Also, I'm sure you are aware there's a ton of deleted scenes and unused footage, that actually has some really great content. I know you sometimes talk about the unused stuff but maybe you could incorporate some more of the deleted stuff into you videos, or make some videos just about the ridiculous amount of ridiculously awesome stuff that 99% of the fans haven't seen yet.
When Michael was sent a bill for the fish that died, I would have given them a middle finger and a lawsuit that I otherwise wouldn't have because sometimes in life it's better to let bygones be bygones unless they don't wuit while they are ahead. If you make your lobby a literal koi pond, it's quite forseeable that someone will fall into it...
I don't see him being able to sue because he wasn't hurt. But maybe he could tell them he'd call OSHA which might require them to remove the koi pond and rebuild the entryway. That would be costly and disruptive.

The Halloween episode just shows how Michael is not in touch with reality. I think some people need to lighten up. I think everyone has had tragedy like that happen close to home. It fits for his personality and is how he would handle the topic trying to educate people on it. I think the office people giving Jim a hard time is fitting with their character arch's as well.
