- The #Deposition episode plays out like a dream turned nightmare for Michael Scott in which he 'takes the stand' and his flaws and faults are all brought to light...and recorded. You know that stenographer had some stories when she came home that night!
Thanks to our NBC overlords for their creation and ownership of the #Office. The clips used here are for reviewing and education.

The Diary entries. First, I should say, I had 2 entries in the video, but I removed one for time and flow.
MICHAEL HITS MEREDITH WITH HIS CAR
Dear diary - It’s me, Michael, again. It’s been many moons since I’ve filled your pages with my warm words. But that time ends now. You’re the only person I can turn to in this dark hour. This is my confession. Let it remain within your pages and clean my body of this mistake. Oh, diary. What can I do? My vehicle crashed into my coworker Meredith just moments ago and here I write to you from my parked car. While I am going to be the bigger man and take the fall (in my diary only), I think we need to focus on the two things that were out of my control. First, Meredith. What was she doing in the parking lot in the first place? Getting out of her car and going to the office? Maybe. Or maybe she was attracted to the car somehow. I saw on National Geographic that deer freeze when they see headlights. Could this also be the case for Meredith and my beautiful Sebring? She has a sex problem and this car is very attractive. The fact is ill-deniedable. The second thing out of my control was the car itself. Was my foot on the gas? Sure. But it was not I who hit Meredith. You wouldn’t blame the man who stabbed someone with a knife for killing someone. The knife is the one to blame there. The car is the one to blame here. We can’t let robots do whatever they want. We’ve all seen iRobot. Anyway, I have to go call an ambulance for Meredith. In that sense, I am the real hero here, saving Meredith both from her own fantasies as well as from this man-killing machine. Remember me, diary. Remember me. LoL (Lots of Love), Michael.
MICHAEL FINDS OUT HE HAS HERPES
My dearest diary - This morning I woke up with a red bump near my lip. I thought at first maybe it was from a mosquito hibernating in my condo during the winter. But it was too big for that. My coworkers found out about it and told me it’s herpes. After looking at some images on Google, throwing up in my trashcan and looking at some more pictures, I’m starting to think they’re right. I’m too young to have herpes, diary. I have my whole life ahead of me. I want to play catch with my son. I want to walk my daughter down the aisle. And I want people to look at me in my casket and say “Hey, that’s one good-looking dead guy.” None of those things are possible now. My life has been stripped away from me. I could grow a mustache and have it for the rest of my life, but it’s always so itchy. I wonder if plastic surgery would do the trick. Dammit, I just looked online and plastic surgery is too expensive. Maybe I can do another fun run. Yes, Michael Scott’s International Annual Best-In-Class Herpes Awareness & Surgery Race Against Herpes. It has a nice ring to it. Xoxo, Michael.
RYAN GOES TO CORPORATE
Greetings diary of mine - I’ve lost the love of my life today. I weep for myself. My protege Ryan has abandoned me for Jan’s job at corporate. David Wallace called me only a few minutes ago and the tears won’t stop. My tie is drenched in a mixture of tears and snot. Of course this is the one day I forget to bring my briefcase full of extra ties. Oh, who cares, anyway? It’s all pointless now. I still have Jan, but that’s like one third of a heart. My other one third of a heart is with Ryan. I have the other third, because without at least a part of a heart I would die. Maybe we could do long distance. I could leave here by five, get to New York by seven, get dinner with Ry and get home in time for sex with Jan before she goes to bed. It’ll be close, but it’s worth the effort. They say if you really love someone you should be able to let them go. Well, they have never met Ryan. He is the fire within my heart. The song in my mind. The laughter in my gut. He is everything. I mean . . . Jan is everything, too. But Ryan is everythinger. Just a little more. Okay, I have to clean myself up and fashion a makeshift tie out of one of the socks in my extra socks briefcase. Love, Michael.

I totally agree. I think this episode was a great representation of the heart of Michael’s character. Michael sees his co workers as his family until he has his own. A little foreshadowing to the “Goodbye, Michael” episode where Michael has a monologue in which he says, “ Holly is my family now. At the end of the day, your coworkers are just your very best friends”. That monologue encapsulates the growth of his character where now he is able to move on and actually start his life. That is why I think David’s words were so important to him,at the time. David showing Michael that he respects him as a person was more impactful to Michael than what he thinks about him professionally. The only thing that would keep this episode out of my top 10 episodes of all time would be the B plot. The more serious nature of the main plot was not balanced very well with the ping pong plot which felt like not very well conceived filler.
Well said! I agree, did not enjoy the ping pong plot, didn't fit with the seriousness of the A plot.
@@dm9489 Even though it was seemingly serious, anything concerning Michael has to have some levity. Ergo, the fun sub plot, which I enjoyed. Even Pam getting smack talked too..
It was genius the way he said “you expect to get screwed by your company , but you don’t expect to be screwed by your girlfriend” because he didn’t bother with an obvious “that’s what she said” showing he was really hurt by it all
Steve Carell's official statement FLOORED ME! 🤣🤣🤣
The whole world deserved a copy of Micheal's diary during Covid-19 lockdown. I would totally read this and buy this. Plus Toby laughing was such a highlight. Michael's loyalty was to the company and not to his girlfriend Jan. Dunder Mifflin was his family before he gave it for Holly and their four children left in Boulder, Colorado. "You expect to get screwed by your company but you never expect to get screwed by your girlfriend." Micheal Scott. You'll never find your Holly if you never move past your Jan.
I feel like reading Michaels diary would be a little like reading Creed's blog, Creed thoughts. Bizarre, but strangely interesting. I would much prefer to read the diary than Pam's comic book.
Even for the internet, it would be pretty shocking…
Paul Lieberstein's face in this episode is priceless
Can we replace andy with dancing Jan from dinner party.
Thought about it...I'm in!
@@Mulverine yes!
That is genius!
Wow those diary entries are spot on. He did a really great job, very Michael Scott.
Sleeper? The Deposition is one of my favorite episodes.
With a rating of 5/5, this one is definitely up there.....that's what she said !!!
So the main plot line contains some of my favorite Michael moments ever, most of which you discussed in the review. His maddeningly obtuse use of language reminds me of the description of Zaphod Beeblebrox in "Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy": it's hard to tell when he's pretending to be stupid in order to defuse an argument, when he's pretending to be extraordinarily stupid in order to get out of a tight spot, and when he's really being genuinely stupid. I think we see examples of all three in the deposition.
Moments like saying "Eyeshh" for "Yes" in a formal legal setting, and actually writing "Hee hee" in his diary, are classic Michael bits that are completely in line with the character that's been established since the middle of the first season, which I call the "loveable jerkass". But it's the exchange with Toby that really stands out for me.
Here's how I see that scene: after who knows how many years of hostility from Michael, Toby finally sees an opportunity to find some common ground with him, and hopes to humanize himself in Michael's eyes. He opens himself up and shares a piece of his own emotional vulnerability, hoping that Michael will relate to it and begin to see Toby as someone he can relate to on an equal level. But Michael is having none of it, and pushes Toby away both metaphorically and literally. In that moment we go back to the "total jerkass" character of Michael that the series began with. The show wouldn't work if Michael were like that all the time, but for this one exchange, it serves to show why the relationship between Michael and Toby is never going to change.
And when Michael tells David Wallace that "I think you're a nice guy too", that illustrates the core of his character. His coworkers, to him, are his friends and family, and he will put his work relationships above any other bonds in his life. Dysfunctional? Of course it is, but that is how Michael Scott is Michael Scott.
Well, I've said a lot for a guy who's not the vlogger. ;) Hope it was some food for thought!
Well don’t start. You’ll give me a run for my money! 😂 jk, these are great thoughts! I didn’t even think about looking at it from Toby’s perspective.
When michaels in the car he talks about how he remembers things by assigning them stories and names . He says he has a friend “inapro” but what kinda name is that lol
"You never expect to get screwed by your girlfriend" is one of Michael's top missed "That's what she said" moments.
He didn't say it because he was actually hurt/serious about this situation.

She said "you never expect to be screwed by your girlfriend"?
@@MetalSandman999 Women have tended to use the term "girlfriend" much more loosely than men use the term "boyfriend," so the joke does work.
Agreed about the B plot. Kelly was insufferable in that. But the A plot makes the episode one of my favorites.
I understand and agree with what you say about the second plot but I personally enjoy it. It's just mindless fun and Kelly fires on all cylinders which I always love.
I've got a lot of thoughts about this episode. Despite having disagreed with your rating of the previous one, I agree that "The Deposition" deserves that 5/5. If it hadn't been overshadowed by "The Dinner Party", I would have considered it the best episode of the season.
Funny thing about the different parts of this episode. The cold opening, the main plotline, and the ping-pong B plot all made strong impressions on me, but if I don't watch this for a while, I forget that they all took place in the same show!
The opening is just cute, with Pam's little routine that makes Michael feel important. The conversation with Ryan is the *good* kind of Michael Scott cringe humor, and the final "Hi buddy!" made me laugh out loud the first time I saw the episode.
The "Ping Pong Plot" was clearly a showcase for Kelly and Dwight, with Darryl and Jim just along for the ride. And Pam... well, therein lies the flaw of this subplot. I agree with you that Pam seems out of character here, but on the other hand, I'm not sure what would have been in character for her. In my fantasy version of the exchange, Pam would have poker-faced all of Kelly's trash talk, not showing any reaction, and leaving Kelly totally baffled. But that would have defeated the purpose of the B-plot, and frankly that would probably also have been out of character for Pam.
So I'm curious as to what other ideas people may have. What would have been a more "Pam-like" reaction, that still would have allowed for a funny plot line and a ping-pong match?
hiya buddy is one of my favorite cold openings of all time. the drawing and the way he sells the line is just SO good
I think this was also the first time Jan said I love you to Michael ! That was a great scene too at the cafeteria where they said it to each other just after settling a mini couple fight
just found your channel! really enjoying your content! keep it up. :)

It was actually season 2 of Heroes that got screwed by the writers strike. One of the greatest disappointments in my life!
Regarding your comment about the weather: today, in mid-October, it was in the 70s in northeastern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, and the NYC area. So on the average it may be a cold season, but we do get our warm days!
It's unseasonably warm where I am right now; but thanks for the insights!
We know what’s coming next! Great video man

I would take this one down to a 4/5 because of the B plot. Still an outstanding episode.
Loving the series
Its crazy how fast food is way more expensive than Chinese food now
This is my favorite episode of the office ever
Notifications made me late! I’m still gonna play along
Why does Michael have issues with Toby being divorced, but not with Daryl, Meredith or even Jan. On the surface his issue with Toby seems divorce minded, but there has too be a deeper issue.
The theory is that Michael projects a lot of his angst about his parent's divorce on Toby, because Toby is somewhat of an authority figure (works for corporate and can put a dampener on what Michael wants to do), but also because Toby was a child of divorce and yet still went through a divorce.
Jan's divorce was simply opportunity for Michael! 😂 And I'll have to think about Darryl and Meredith.
@@Mulverine i have to add Stanley into the equation too. I think Michael doesn’t like Toby, regardless and uses that as another reason to rip on him. Even Jim had issues with Toby when Michael was gone...I just think it’s Toby, more than Michael’s psychological issues dealing with him parents divorce.
That's totally fair! I love when Jim impersonates Toby in Survivor Man.
Toby is the complete opposite of Michael in just about every way cept maybe the divorce which brings bad mojo anyway. Plus , I think from the very beginning it was one of those special personality clashes that left the audience wondering why MS hates poorToby so much. Like a TV trope from some other shows like Seinfeld not liking Newman.
I love this episode
One of my top fives!!!
I feel like the B plot might have worked better in another episode. It just doesn’t mesh with the stakes of the deposition scenes.
I feel like a more inter-personal B plot would have worked.
please do another full, all-out review of dinner party
I’m stoked!
I just discovered this a day after finishing the office (again) and I love it so much.
And I’m sad Steve Carell answers so negatively to your proposal. My suggestion is to insist, never stop, go to his home and flood his email box, preferably hire a stripper to trick him into coming out
I would read creeds thoughts
Really bugged me how Ryan was part of the deposition when it had absolutely nothing to do with him.
I have a couple of Easter Eggs I'd like to share with you for later episodes & have been looking for more. I'm going to compile a whole list of Easter eggs I've found that hasn't been noticed online.

To be fair, Mulverine, Pam seems off her character for almost this entire season. Which is a huge let down for me. The only thing that I love about this ping-pong subplot is... Drum roll, please: Dwight. Obviously.
As an attorney who has taken and defended hundreds of depositions, I can’t watch this episode because that’s not how depositions work.
Did you mean *not* how depositions work, or is this now how depositions work? Lol

I hated the ping pong side plot. Especially Kelly.
So, it is canon that Michael Scott is bisexual, right?
he's pan sexual he kissed with a gay person
I like this episode but the B plot really is kind of boring.
Hey! Good to hear from one of my oldest commenting subscribers! The B plot just drags this whole thing down, and while making this video I kept wondering if when I put it out there, everyone would just lambast me for not 'getting it'. Maybe it was just that Ping Pong was the best way they wanted to reinforce the back and forth that Michael was going through...that's smart...I should have said that in the video...lol
@@Mulverine Yeah I keep meaning to comment when you put these videos out on Thursday’s but I get so busy I just forget lol. The B plot to me feels like it should be part of another episode at times-it’s just such a weird tonal shift, but I can see why they wanted a funnier/lighter tone compared to the main plot of the deposition.
More like cringey
