I'm with Robert3727, I had a 1996 Evinrude 8hp doing the same thing. Did everything to the carb until I got a new power pack; it solved all the problem. Enjoy the way you demo you videos and honesty.
You need to change the exhaust tube also to change it to a 15.
Is there a leak in one of the seals allowing air in?
Really helpful content. I like that you dont assume we're all mechanics 😂 thanks for the helpful information. Hopeful to have my 9.9 1977 on the water this season.
You did a great clean up on the beast. That is is good point that you mentioned about those outboard transom clamps. Many people forget to put some lubrication on them.
thanks for watching
Thanks for another informative video. Like many others I'm leaning towards a fuel delivery problem but it's really strange that it would occur with two different carburetors having the same symptoms. As far as the ignition components there is a video out there on UA-cam by wet shoes mechanic that shows how to test all the ignition components with just a simple volt ohm meter if I remember correctly. I'm sure I have it saved in my saved videos if you can't find it. Keep up the awesome work, looking forward to the resolution video.
Sounds to me that its getting too much air maybe turn out mixer screw another 1/4 or 1/2 turn . How about just trying the 9.9 carb on it . Another great video love the Ol Johnsons and Evinrudes . As always Sir thanks for the ride along and Keep’em coming 👍👍👍👍
that's possible, thanks for watching
Thanks for posting a video today.
you bet, thanks for watching
Great videos and info. Do these have to be timed to crank over ?
Hey RMD I’ve got a 1974 15 go Johnson that is filling the engine compartment up with water and of course stalling out once water is too much
I’ve changed head gasket, thermostat and gaskets there any suggestions?
Thanks for your videos- they are interesting and helpful
Fuel pump leek or a gasket under the carb/motor side, or a leek in the fuel line. Carb is sucking air somewhere. Sounds like it's running lean, especially when it's accelerating.
Did you have any success solving the 1977 surprise issue? I've got an 1980 9.9 with a 15hp carb. Love it.
vacume leek or fuel pump, discount discount discount, i have 2 1955 25hp and i just love them, .keep at the great videos. and have fun.
Thanks for sharing! come on MarineEngine my watchers are wanting a discount code. Thanks for watching
No vacuum leak?
Where oh where did you get the pineapple shirt? Love it!!!!
To me, it seems like an air leak somewhere.
Pulling the choke forces more fuel in and it runs longer. Check under the flywheel for a crankshaft seal leak. Or maybe a bad fuel line.
Thanks for the tips and thanks for watching
Michael,
It could be the coil and it be the carb. I will be curious to know how the carb cleaned up with the needle and seat. What about the fuel pump?
Thanks,
Tim
All things currently point to the carb, but, something else seems to be a bit off, thanks for watching
Thank you Michael for showing me how Clean and Use WD 40 to lube I love all your Motors outboard
You bet, thanks for watching
I've had this happen with a couple motors so far. Believe it or not try another powerpack. My uneducated geuss it they go bad and make them fire out of time. Enjoy your videos btw
Glad you enjoy the videos, thanks for watching and the tip.
Found your channel today. Working on a Johnson 9.9 1976, gear oil seals are worn out. I've already snapped 2 bolts, and broke a bolt flange on the bearing housing (urg).
I cannot get the lower unit to separate from the motor. There where only 4 bolts, so I'm guessing someone, at some point, snapped 2 of the bolts, and maybe that's what's holding it up.
It's a pain in the behind working on restoring an old motor, that has not been taken care of.
sometimes the broken bolts can be corroded on the through hole area, good luck and thanks for watching
Just that happened to me on an old outboard amazing how the crud prevented the separation. One bolt came out part of the way then snapped. The remaining piece of the bolt was loose came out by hand once the lower part as separated.
Either low speed idle screw or high speed under the float
Ok, we will find out, thanks for watching
Is it possible to strip the 57 intake and use a more efishant modern one ?
they are the same other than spacers on the reeds. Thanks for watching
Low speed jet or float needle or float itself. Low speed circuit issue. Perhaps.
Check the fule pump screen or filter
Ok, will do, thanks for watching
Definitely fuel starvation. If fuel pump is not leaking air then your fuel supply to the carb is being impacted. Is the tank vent open? Is your fuel line liner collapsing? That could cause a vacuum on the fuel going into the carb starving the engine which would improve slightly when you choke the carb increasing the velocity by Venturi effect. Lastly a vacuum leak in the carb, bad gaskets or a plugged air bleed passage again not letting the fuel to flow properly. Good luck, those are things I would try.
Thanks for the tips and thanks for watching
crank seals are bad or crank bearing
Fuel pump?
since it runs so long without a fuel line I don't think it is that, thanks for the suggestion and watching
Could be sucking air around worn throttle shaft plates
I have a 15hp that I would have to work the choke the same as you to keep running. Just had to open the needle another turn and it idles great
Thanks for the info and thanks for watching
You need to get a shop smock.
Now I need a15 hp carb lol
i also have a 1955 johnson 25 and a 1973 johnson 25 similar to your white 25. both excellent runners. i describe them as the 1955 is a big block 25 and the 1973 is the small block. that 1955 model is a thirsty girl. lol
Good to know about the big block being a drinker, thanks for watching
The reed plate might be different as well
could be, thanks for watching
Float level
I have the same motor and year. Same problem. In my case it was the fuel pump.
Ok, thanks and thanks for watching
If you need a latch, spring and pin, cotter pin I got one let me know a freebie ...... 1955 thru 1958 Johnsons should all be the same .Is your hinge point cracked on the hood as it looks damaged not sure????? ....Glenn
yes it is broken, I now have a tig welder, I think I can fix it. thank for watching
Come on Marine engine give Michael a discount code. He has earned it if anyone has.
So WTF was it in the end? Just left us hanging!!!!
Is that a 15 hp . 9.9
this is a factory 9.9 that someone put a 15hp carb on.
Michael...change any remaining fuel lines to the clear...it does sound like an air leak......Give Michael and use a discount for parts!!!!
Thanks for watching
Air leak or maybe bad dirty reed valves.
could be, thanks for watching
Check fuel pump diaphragm. Strange indeed.
will do, thanks for watching
i say fuel pump or card adjustment
Thanks for your input, thanks for watching
sea foam choke sorry for spelling
thanks for the tip and thanks for watching
Fuel pump would be my bet marine engine discount code yes please
Thanks for commenting and watching.
Choke says it has to be fuel starvation.
I think so too, thanks for watching
ok i had a snow blower that would only run on half cock so i put saefrom in gas and ran it about 2hrs after clearing snow refuled up and it ran with cock off and still runs with it off 2years later just a guess.
thanks for the tip and thanks for watching
You might have to put a diaphragm in the fuel pump.
That is possible, thanks for watching
fuel pump
Have you ever been diagnosed with ADHD? lol I have it and see a lot of squirrels I see a lot of similarity with you LOL Reed valve maybe. or air mixture
Nope, I'm just in the working on what makes me happy school, If I stop enjoying it then I move on, thanks for watching
U yak way tooooo much get to the point please
Thanks for watch,
I thought u had did a similar video with this motor
That was a 1988 and this is a 1977, thanks for watching
