I’m new to the hobby of enjoying Bourbon, but I gotta say, I’ll never spend too much more than MSRP on anything I buy. I just won’t do it. And certainly not without tasting it first!!

Tom, I’m right there with you. I don’t mind paying 15-20% over MSRP (some small stores don’t have the purchasing power and will have to mark up more), But there are a few bottles that I would pay double MSRP for. But that’s only because I’ve tried them and I love them. Per to your point of actually trying them

@@beginningbourbon7385 - You nailed the percentages down. And at most double MSRP IF I know I loved it. Great stuff again!

Secondary = Robbery without a gun. JK, that is what the bottle shop owner said when I asked about it when first started hunting bourbon. He sells at state min but knows how much the markup is of the unicorn bourbons. Great vid as always.

Cutter, LOL, funny analogy on the secondary market!!! I just can’t imagine paying what some people are paying. I’d rather hook a buddy up with a great bottle than get a Unicorn and sell it. But to each their own.

Buffalo Trace is very hard to find in Maryland. Three weeks ago, I went searching for a bottle, and the first store I found which had it in stock asked for $75/bottle! I kept looking, and found it for $30.

Great job!!! There are very very few bottles worth pulling the trigger on a marked up price.

Oh man, I agree with Tom D. I could never see myself spending a whole lot more than MSRP. 15% over wouldn't phase me, but there is no way I could see myself spending double MSRP. Of course I'm nothing more than an armature-noob when it comes to whiskey/bourbon and tend to flinch at spending more than about $45 dollar a bottle anyway.
Love the straight-forward videos, keep 'em coming!

I’m with you 99% if the time Gary. There are some bourbons I would pay a decent mark up on....solely because they are so tough to find and delicious.

Once again, great video! a sad topic but you explained really well. Keep it up! I will be first to watch every time. much appreciated for the video
Just like the example you just presented, there is an high barrier of entrance for new enthusiast. Way too often I have went to a liquor store where they have "nothing" but someone else walk in and they pull out something behind their counter for their buddies. So what do you do? You love this new hobby. You stick around and talk about whiskey and be friend the liquor store employees or owners. For granted, as an whiskey enthusiast, some of the best info only comes from these employees/owners and if you like whiskey, this is actually one of the fun parts. But man, sometimes it gets tiring for me and the store folks. ETL is a great example. It just hit my state warehouse and so far there is only 40 bottles in the warehouse (through chatting at liquor store, see). Which store is going to get it? How many is going to ACTUALLY show up on the shelf? no one knows.
Don't get me wrong, I have met many friends through this journey. I love it. In my experience, sharing samples is way more realistic than owning a bottle of ETL for newbies. Till then, it is going to be a vicious cycle where people who know the liquor store owner get the bottles first and then share in their circle and eventually some may leak into secondary. I am not going to pay secondary but when I trade bottles with my circle, it is always valued by secondary pricings. I want to say I feel bad that some days I am the guy who gets the bottle behind the counter... Supply vs Demand I suppose.

Thanks so much for the kind words Tom!!! Dude, you are so right! It can be tiresome “hunting” and developing your relationships...but like you said...it’s the only way to get good stuff. It is a sad reality but true.
At least it isn’t any different than most other hobbies. For example, if you want a Rolex right now you aren’t going to be able to buy one except for on the secondary market at secondary prices. Unless you have an in with an authorized dealer and they hook you up.
Doesn’t make it an easier pill To swallow, but
