    This lady that’s narrating has a lot of peace in her life

      Well, the lady (that's me) laughed aloud when she read your comment, but then she thought, "Why am I laughing? I DO have a lot of peace in my life. I just never gave it much thought." She's not going to enumerate all her blessings, but one of them is nice comments like yours, Jonathan.

    Very beautifully expressed. I have heard my own trumpeter swans over my head.

      You know I agree with you, Melissa. And I love to watch them stutter stepping across the water on takeoff.

    +Jo Alwood 2:23 I love the way you say, "Take a guess as to why they might be called, trumpeter swans!". When I tried saying that myself, I had a big smile on my face, and I had what my mother calls "moon eyes". This is where if you could see it, my eyes would look like crescent moons while I smile! That's an expression of joy for me, and usually happens when I'm excited. At 1:44, I could have sworn I heard something go, "Quack!". Perhaps it was the way the sound was recorded when the trumpeter swans were making that joyful symphony of their trumpeting calls.

      It's a pleasure to start my day with a comment from someone who got such a kick out of this movie, largely because it's one of my favorites. I about froze my fingertips off filming them, but they're so worth it! Did you watch Part Two? I'll admit it isn't as exciting, but it has charms of its own.

    My third graders are reading the book "The Trumpet of the Swan" by E.B. White, and we are going to watch this video today so they get to actually see the takeoff and flying that was described in Chapter 6, which they read last night. Such a wonderful video- informative, sincere, and witty. Thanks, Jo!

      +Jaclyn Blum I love to hear that, Jaclyn. I've been showing some of my films to my daughter-in-law's fifth graders and talking about the scientific method with them. I'm a retired high school English teacher myself. I wish I could have been in the room when the students saw this. (What city are you in, by the way?)

    Wow, too cool how they ski to a landing! I hadn’t seen this before! Walking on water has to be handed to the Grebes, but these swans hold a strong second place!
    Thank you!

    +Jo Alwood Listening to this video, to me, the narrator has a voice that reminds me of Gloria Stewart, the woman who played the older version of Rose on Titanic. I'm one of those girlies who loves birds of all kinds, and since I'm blind, I identify birds by hearing their calls. When I first heard a trumpeter swan's call, I thought, "Hmm, I didn't know a bird was capable of sounding like a brass instrument!". That's pretty cool. If I could visualize them, trumpeter swans look like beautiful ballerinas dancing on the water.

    • @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
      @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME  4 роки тому

      What an interesting comment! First, because you describe everything in terms of how it sounds, like my voice in terms of a specific actress I've never even heard of. And you knowing bird calls--in fact, only their calls. I would like the calls of these swans to party horns. Your idea that the swans look like ballerinas dancing on the water is true to their spirit, but they're actually too bulky to be ballerinas. They're so big that they have to flap their wings for many yards before they can take off. Swallows dance on air and often dip to the water like ballerinas. I can't think of a water bird as graceful as a ballerina.

    • @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
      @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME  4 роки тому

      I read our exchange to my husband, and he disagreed with me. He pointed out that when swans are taking off, they flap their wings and run across the water on the tips of their feet until they are airborne. Ballerinas dance on their toes, he said.

      +Jo Alwood Better yet, I wonder if swans can live in a place like Southern California. When
      my sweet love, Johnny and I live together, we want to have a couple trumpeter
      swans in our backyard. We want to have a house on the ocean, we love nature and
      everything that comes with it. Johnny's also blind, and we both love animals of all
      kinds, so I wonder how we would raise trumpeter swans. I bet we would have to
      have a nice big pond outside in the backyard, especially if our swans want to
      start a family! Would swans be able to withstand living in a place like
      Huntington Beach, California? Generally, from what I understand, Huntington
      Beach has warm summers and relatively mild winters, with very little
      rainfall. As of right now, the weather in Huntington Beach is 62 degrees, under partly cloudy skies, wind from the west at 4 miles per hour,
      with 97% humidity and high surf advisory. darksky.net/forecast/33.6783,-117.999/us12/en
      Someone at the Trumpeter Swan Society, a woman named Margaret Smith, says she doesn't recommend that trumpeter swans live in Southern California, as
      she says and I quote, "It is too hot- they
      are northern birds. If you purchased any, you wouldn’t be able to let them have cygnets without permits from CA and/or the Fish and Wildlife Service as they are not native to southern California and any wild birds cannot allowed by be free flying from captive swans without the appropriate permits.". That's rather interesting, since I read somewhere that trumpeter swans could actually live in Southern California. Historically they have lived in parts of Southern California. Huntington Beach is not as hot as, say, places like Death Valley or Joshua Tree, which both are in the desert center of California. Huntington Beach is actually on the coast line side of California, which would be approximately 20 to 30 degrees cooler than a place like Los Angeles. I've also been corresponding with a company called Purely Poultry in Wisconsin (www.purelypoultry.com), , specifically a woman named Christina Eckstine, and she says that all the birds they ship out to people around the world are pinioned before they reach their destination. Pinioning sounds
      painful! I bet it's like when a dog or cat is spayed or neutered. Would they still be able to fly short distances round the pond? Better yet, will they still be able to swim? I wonder if swans would eat something like birdseed. Would pinioning tame them? The reason why I ask about
      the birdseed is because I have a bird feeder where I have birds like California scrub jays, black-capped chickadees, barn swallows and other birds that come and eat there, and I give them something called
      Northwest Blend, a birdseed that has things like sunflower seeds,
      peanuts, and grains that have been deprived of the shells, as the ones with the shells make a mess on the porch. I buy it from Wild Birds Unlimited in Eugene, Oregon for $15.00 for a 5-pound bag. If I were to raise trumpeter swans, Christina says she recommends something like waterfowl feed or even game bird feed. What does waterfowl feed have? And, game bird feed? what's that, I wonder? How would I feed them? Would I bring the feed out to the pond? Put it in a bird feeder? I'm confused! Would I be able to feed them all year long if I live in Southern California? Since I think I read that they would be fed most in the winter. I even read that swans could eat things like spinach and leafy greens. However, Christina tells me I should be careful if I offer them spinach, telling me I should offer it no more than once a week, as it's very high in phosphorus. Is phosphorus dangerous to a swan? I'm confused on that one! I thought it was supposed to be something that's good for you like all vitamins and minerals.

      Thank you, Francisco. In one sense, it was easy to get the footage because I knew exactly where to find them. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. I about froze my buns off getting the footage, but I thought showing them was worth the discomfort. As for the music, you're not alone in wishing I'd leave it out, but for every comment like yours, I probably get 20 from people who like the music I put on my videos. I'm going to let the majority rule on the issue, and I hope it won't prevent you from watching other films. I have lots of informative, entertaining movies.

      I might like music on your other videos, but here, I enjoy the music of the swans and want to hear it. There's a place in Monticello, Minnesota where hundreds, sometimes thousands, of swans gather because a power plant keeps the water open. It's awe-inspiring. The sound all those swans make is really loud, but I love it. You can see it on UA-cam videos--put "Monticello swans" into the search box.

      I checked it out, and the noise is what I called a 'joyful cacophony.' I do understand why you love it.

    • @mh605
      @mh605 6 років тому

      Yes, joyful cacophony really describes it! Especially since they were almost extinct. Only 65 left in the continental US and a few more in Alaska. It took 40 years of effort by wildlife officials to help them come back. Now there are 17,000 swans in MN and several hundred in other states. If you come to MN in the winter sometime, visit the swans in Monticello. If you get lucky, there may be a crowd there.

    • @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
      @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME  6 років тому

      We don't get 17,000 of them in St. Louis. I guess it's too warm here to suit them. But some years, we get more than a thousand. I'll settle for that. The thought of Minnesota cold freezes my bone marrow.
