They're not overly Malicious either. If you try to mess with them... they simply go defensive, but also know when not to use their full power in the circumstances. Majestic is the word I would use for them.

I did the same thing once as a kid because these ducklings couldn’t get over a wall, luckily I was dealing with a Muscovy duck and not a swan so I didn’t get attacked

It’s almost like the mother knew what I was doing too because she just sat and watched and as soon as she got them all back, they swam away. She looked distressed when they were too tiny to get out and didn’t know what to do. I was like 8 or 9, I felt so proud
The man made rescuing the baby swans more difficult than it had to be. He kept directly walking towards them and scaring them away instead of going around them and trapping them against the wall.
The swans were remarkably calm given the fact that they can get extremely nasty. They seem to know intuitively that they were being helped. Even geese won’t mess with them.

I did that too in 89. Both parents went for me. Thier youngster was snared in fishing line, in the middle of a lake. My dad, cast a pike lure, and broke the line. The cygnet came to the bank as it was exhausted after its ordeal. Couple of Carp anglers said, he has been snagged out there for 3 days. Our thoughts of them, must remain unprinted. Anyway, i shimmied the bank and grabbed it. 2 angry parents hot pursuit. We cut the line from its legs, and then the fun started. Yes, 2 homicidal parents want my guts. I shimmied back and launched thier cygnet back to them, then they buggered off. Ungrateful gits ❤❤

It's a nice thought but I'm fairly certain he's just mad because he's a male swan and he perceives humans as a threat to his babies- he would be angry regardless of the situation, because the guy is going near them. male swans are always mad if you go near their babies.

Quit projecting complex thought onto an animal. The swan saw a large creature approaching its babies and sought to defend them, by instinct, but acting warey to avoid injury. It ain't gonna trust something just because we can see the bloke going to help them, most animals aren't that deep.

Well, if I’m not mistaken, that is the river and weir in Otley, West Yorkshire, UK, where I lived until 5 years ago when we moved 6 miles away! That is a very slippery river edge and that area that he walked on is usually thick mud so it must have been last summer (2022) He did exceptionally well as the weir is usually huge and he wouldn’t have got down there. The swans are quite forgiving and used to lots of people but he did a great job with the rescue. The babies are often quite silly and go into daft places but usually get out OK. Thank you for helping.
This man has his Heart on the right place, but I think the little ones must learn first how to fix there onw problems. The crisis wasn't that big. Next time he isn't there, how they do it than.

Having lived by a lake with swans, I observed that it was best if it was not a man who did the rescuing, since those beaks are hard and at just the right height... So I started doing the rescues myself where possible. If a man must do it, he should have his back to the swan and look over his shoulder as much as possible.
I recently untangled a swan from fishing line it was around her wings and feet she was drowning.she thanked me with a wing slap in the face.beautiful innocent animals and birds
You realise that 10 minutes later the cygnets will probably be back there? I was constantly saving ducklings that were going down culverts where I lived once. A lot didn't survive. Thats why they have so many babies, in the hope 1 or 2 will survive. Sad but true.

That was probably the least aggressive mute swan I’ve ever seen. I’ve been pinched and flogged for just walking past them - they’re mean!

Having lived by a lake with swans, I observed that it was best if it was not a man who did the rescuing, since those beaks are hard and at just the right height... So I started doing the rescues myself where possible. If a man must do it, he should have his back to the swan and look over his shoulder as much as possible.

I recently untangled a swan from fishing line it was around her wings and feet she was drowning.she thanked me with a wing slap in the face.beautiful innocent animals and birds

You realise that 10 minutes later the cygnets will probably be back there? I was constantly saving ducklings that were going down culverts where I lived once. A lot didn't survive. Thats why they have so many babies, in the hope 1 or 2 will survive. Sad but true.
