    Forgive me folks I've made an error. Looks like I omitted part about checking for power at the pump connector. The pump DID have power with the key on. I don't know what I did with that scene and I apologize for not noticing during editing.

    Hi Ray, I am a 42 year experience technician as an authorized Bosch Diesel tech and when you were looking at the idle fuel trims, you pretty much had the diagnosis....GM stipulates 4mm spreads, but Bosch stipulates 4mm TOTAL....meaning 2 mm plus or minus. Also, be sure to use ONLY Bosch OEM remans.....only ones out there that work right and stay working.
    I recently joined the automotive repair industry, instead of being in the fuel injection repair industry, so I am using your videos to familiarize myself with alot of the newer technologies. Great videos, btw.

      What do you say to the S&S injectors?

    • @builtbyme

      @@RainmanRaysRepairss&s or exergy are both the top 2 aftermarket gotos. Most of the performance guys use one of the 2. They do supply from stock on up. As a 3rd would by dynomite diesel, 4th flux diesel. I personally run S&S 150% over with dual 12mm pumps. High HP compound setup. They are Bosch modified injectors from the mentioned companies. Stay away from companies like injectors direct, diesel logic, pensicola, etc.

    • @Stoney3K

      That's the first thing I would check, in particular since there's also another connector on that harness. If the pump is not kicking on, it's causing a restriction in the suction line and the high-pressure fuel pump won't be able to pull in fuel on its own. Simple check, connect the AirDog to the jumper pack, crank the engine and if it's starts, the power delivery to the pump is just bad.
      If it's an injector issue it wouldn't cause a no-start unless one of the injectors is stuck open and pulling the fuel pressure down, and judging by the fuel trim (and the engine sound) that isn't the case. It would also be easy to find since you're spewing lots of unburnt diesel out the exhaust. It sounded fine at WOT so I suspect more of a common fuel delivery problem than an injector one. The chance that ALL 8 injectors are bad is very slim.
      And swapping 8 injectors is gonna be an expensive job if it's only a wiring issue to the lift pump.

      I did all eight on my 04 LB7. I had about twelve hours in mine. I am a PDR guy who was a body man back when I had to do it. You're right it is a lot of stuff to remove to just get to the injectors, and making sure all the metal fuel lines are tight and leak free was a bit of a pain, but all has been good ever since.

    Ray, have you considered tossing a cheap big screen into the shop? Years ago while rebuilding a 91 4runner, I connected a GoPro to a monitor zip tied to the hood to find a leaking injector because the camera fit where I couldn't.
    These days, you could use a big screen with a chromecast and literally cast your phone screen and just slide your phone in wherever you need and see it live.

    It was a ford Transit, but a Mechanic at my work went to a ford dealership, and they had replaced the engine and damn near everything else, the Mech decided to bypass the filters, and it actually ran... he checked out the filter housings and found they were leaking in air. he replaced those and all was fixed, so the dealership wasted months and couldn't fix the problem, one guy comes in and had it fixed in a few hours.

      @athhud 7 місяців тому

      10-12hrs seems like a bit much for the seasoned professional. The first one I did was over a decade ago in my early 20’s. I didn’t know near as much about turning a wrench as I do now. Electric ratchets didn’t exist, I was working out of a friend’s severely unorganized tool box, had to stop and make my own fuel line disconnect tool, got far deeper into a case of beer than I intended to, and included the time to stop and slather some JB Weld onto a pinhole leak in a steel coolant line. In the face of all of that adversity, I still got it done in 8hrs. I feel like I could probably come close to cutting that time in half today, but could definitely shave off 2hrs. Don’t get me wrong, it is a big job that I have absolutely no desire to do again, but an organized fella with a proper set of tools and years of experience can easily get it done within one 8hr work day.
      2 layer valve covers are at the top of the list of the absolute dumbest ideas I’ve ever seen under a hood. I’d rather wrench on an inline diesel under water before I would a V configuration on the best of days. I vote that Ray just does a 12v Cummins swap rather than replacing Duramax injectors. The cost for parts and labor probably wouldn’t be very far apart. Lol

    Will it start with the lift pump powered by the jump box?

  • @donstarr391
    @donstarr391 7 місяців тому +1

    The AirDog (or FASS) lift pump was a common mod even on the 2nd-gen Dodge with the Cummins. It came with a weak lift pump from the factory, mounted on the block up by the fuel filter / water separator. On my '01, I did "phase 1", which was to relocate the lift pump to the frame rail right in front of the tank. (Well, that's really phase 2. Phase 1 is to install a fuel pressure gauge after the filter. The fragile Bosch VP44 really does not like to be starved of its lubricating and cooling "extra fuel".) Phase 3 is to install the aftermarket pump/filter/water separator by the tank like this customer's truck has.
    And I kinda cringed (and laughed) when Ray described the labor and parts costs to swap injectors. It took this first-timer 2 hours to replace the factory injectors with something a little less docile. The hardest part was getting a wrench on #6. The injectors themselves weren't cheap, though - almost $900.

    Kind of like replacing a water pump on a car with timing belt. You have to remove fan belts, shroud, plastic cover, and timing belt first. Getting there is most of the cost. That's why you always replace water pump while replacing timing belt. You are already there.
    In this case, getting there is most of the cost.

      I had that done recently on my car too. I had an Egr assembly replaced due to massive crack in it causing coolant leaks. Got the Egr replaced, then 6km later my water pump packed it in. Mechanic said pay the extra $200 and get the timing belt done at the same time. Glad I did because the timing belt was overdue anyway so gave me one less thing to worry about. No more coolant leaks now and $4000 later lol

    Great work as always. A cam and crank sensor issue wouldn't be fixed by starting it on brake cleaner. Diesels usually run a small "pilot" fuel injection followed by a main - especially during start, idle and low speed/load running. Your total fuel rate (11 mm3/injection) was equal to pilot (2.2 mm3/injection) + main (9.4 mm3/injection). The fuelling was also shown as pulse duration in microseconds (us). CMD = commanded. Cylinder balance value at -3 mm3/injection is pretty huge, so that is bad. In my experience, foot on the floor for a diesel doesn't have any impact as it is in crank mode until it reaches a specific engine speed. The fuel rate, timing, fuel pressure is specific to that mode. It's common that the start fuel quantity gets "ramped" up on a timer - that could be why it eventually started. Clearly under fuelling - hence needs to brake cleaner to get going. I wouldn't have thought to try that. FBC (Fuel balance Control) only works to even up the idle by looking at speed fluctuations on the flywheel. It usually shuts of at about 1500rpm. Is it building high pressure rail pressure during cranking? I would guess so. What's going on with the intake - that bit sitting near the alternator.

    Make sure your getting power to the airdog before you do injectors. It should still fire and run even with a balance rate of over 4

    I like how you checked to see if there was air in the system from the AirDog. I was running an AirDog lift pump on my Powerstroke. My pump would not self-prime when I changed the filters. I would have to screw the filter on and then loosen it, crank the truck until fuel pumped out of the filter, and then screw the filter on quickly. I had my Banks iDash set on the lift pump pressure so I could monitor this when I changed the filters. I like the pump but this was a pain. I ended up going back to the OEM lift pump so I could fit the 70gal aftermarket fuel tank. The AirDog is just sitting on a self now.

    Im so glad i had this video of yours come up for me. Because this truck is doing the same as mine. With the same engine and the filter deleted with the lift pump. Not sure if its the same pump but im not worried with that.
    My scan tool says lost communication with ficm.
    Fyi, it don't mean it don't have 4x4 if it has no buttons. It might have a shifter on the floor. That one there has the full center column. So obviously it would have the buttons.

    I work at a diesel shop. See these everyday. We have taken off dozens of airdogs and replaced with fass fuel system pump. I'd recommend that rainman

    When they first came out I was assigned to work on them I've seen the injectors leaking fuel in the oil through the weep hole in the injectors causing the oil level to increase I had to fight with GM to replace the injectors until I had to remove both valve covers and put dye in the fuel to take pictures of it. I made me a fuel cap with a valve in it to push the fuel into the filter housing. I had a truck with 200 miles on it with a bad transmission we had to R&R only they wouldn't let us touch them with the Allison in them.

    I do believe that's the same engine in the HUMMV and that black box on the high pressure fuel pump can cause all those issues when it goes bad. When they go bad they automatically think the engine is overheating and it shuts down the fuel pump. Thus making the lift pump the only source of fuel pressure.

      Humvees should have the older 6.5 in them, completely different engine and pump. All of the injector lines go to the pump on those. It’s a Stanadyne rotary pump. The black box you refer to is on the driver’s side of the pump body, is about the size of a deck of cards and is what make the pump injector fuel to each injector. It’s called a PMD - pump mounted driver, or FSD - fuel solenoid driver.
      The CP 3 on the Duramax is made by Bosch and feeds 2 fuel rails and then the injector lines come off of the fuel rails - 4 per side.

    I have seen video - think it was Wheeler Dealer - specialty shops have the ability to test fire injectors on the bench. A good one looks very different from a bad one.
