  • The Alfa 8C is one of the most desirable Alfas ever created. Powered by a 450bhp, 4.7litre V8 and with a curvaceous body created out of carbon-fibre but what's it like to drive? Find out here..
    Many thanks to classicmotorhub.com for the loan of this car, where it is just gone up for sale.

      Absolutely agree - i have no idea, how they've done it but this weird vehicle from not exactly very luxurious(currently) manufacturer looks so good, that it can be considered a work of art. There's just a handful of cars in history that looked as beautiful, as this one.

    The important thing to remember about those gearboxes (I had a few with the same unit), they’re designed to be driven in manual mode via the paddles, and you’re meant to simulate feathering the throttle on changes. The auto mode was never really meant to be used

      @ZappoTan why Golf is a car? Golf is shoes box with engine! 😂

    • @tomwebb7091
      @tomwebb7091 4 роки тому +16

      @ZappoTan Youre comparison of a Golf to this Alfa is strange to start with but for you to claim the Alfa is slower than a Golf R in a straight line is even dafter. Put simply youre talking bollocks.
      I owned a Maser GT 4.7S which is 435bhp and almost same engine as the 450bhp unit in this Alfa. The Maser, as Harry states, is over 200kg heavier and ironically i left my brothers 330bhp Golf behind in mine once over 100mph so this Alfa will easily leave a standard 300bhp Golf R behind in a straight line. Its not even getting close mate. Heavily modded Golf might.
      I agree on a B road the GolfR is indeed leaving this and the Maser behind but a Golf R is irrepressibly drab and dull and isnt even 1/10th as special as either the Alfa 8C or Maserati GT-S. In fact a nice early Maser GTS is about the same price as a Golf R 🤔...nuff said.

      @@merlin51h84 the 8C engine sounds amazing you can not compare the V8 to the Bi Turbo 6 but the 6 does sound great and is the best sounding 6 out there i feel. the two 8C i worked on we remapped the ECU, first ever in the world to do these, made a custom air intake plenum with BMC filter and we removed and fabricated a resonator delete on the exhaust. these two cars sounded incredible i wish i had access to them again today to shoot video. this video posted here is great because i remember driving these 8C new and i was scratching my head at how bad and rough they drove for the money. the progression of technology is staggering in 10 years with the automotive world and we see this in the new Giulia. Alfa also at this time did not have the money, facility and dire need to revamp the brand to enter the USA like FCA has now done. The 8C will remain a timeless rare classic for its lifetime regardless of how bad it drives to our modern standards.

      Well, I guess the car is just not as brutal as its cousin, but from what I saw in this video the harsh ride actually gives a sense of real rawness ... which in my book is something very good. Plus acceleration is not exactly bad. Probably if you are someone who drives many different exotics on a daily basis and have an access to stuff like Senna and GT2 RS then maybe this car will feel a little clumsy, but apart from that this looks just enought.

      Harry communicates better than nearly any reviewer I can think of... without adding Chris Harris' driving, but that's a totally different approach. I thoroughly enjoy them both.
      Harry's comments regarding the looks of this Alfa are right on point. It looks spectacular; the drive-ability is another thing entirely. Maybe the target buyer is where the real difference lies... if you'd buy it for the looks, exhaust note, and the gorgeous design, you're probably the target buyer. If you're much more a "driver-buyer," the looks don't rank as high as everything working properly and being able to "fly-it" down the road to your heart's content. But then, that's not often the experience in high-end Italian sports cars. It seems your choices are Gorgeous/Quirky or Gorgeous/Technically-Competent. It's very rare to find both in one car, regardless of the origin.

    I'd reckon that many of us does really like that analogue or even kind of brutal ("klonk klonk klonk") feel what those early automated manual gearboxes gives us. Gallardo, Murcielago and Aventador are the best examples. It brings huge of sense of occasion compared to modern days super ultimate seamless PDK -stuff, "proot-proot-proot"
    At least I enjoy my Ferrari 360 F1 (automated manual) much, much more than I enjoyed my previous & much newer Porsche (PDK) 911.

    A car that should have come with a manual gated box and a Skyhook suspension or at least manually adjustable damping. In many ways, the 8C summarizes high rank and emotion Italian automobiles: quite compromised on the overall and flawed, but certainly no compromise on styling and sound (no fake farts coming from those pipes, no stupid playstation noise coming from the speakers, can ya hear that, Jag and BMW ?).

    • @Freimopp777
      @Freimopp777 5 років тому +3

      I agree with you, but when the 8c was in production there was also the M3 V8, M5 V10 in production. The new Stelvio has some kind of microphone next to the intake, the signal from which is used to generate some sound in the interior, but it is a option.

      Tell you what, in the early 70's to mid 80's my dad owned 7 Alfas, consisting of 3 Alfettas 1.8 (one was for spare parts), 1 Alfetta 2000, 1 GT Junior and 1 GTV 2000 plus 1 Berlina. He also owned 240Z. All the Alfas were sold in the late 80's to early 90's but the 240Z remains up till now. The 240 Z was much more reliable than all the Alfas, period. I bought a low mileage 156 2.5 V6 while working in the middle east. One day the so called selesspeed would not switch gear and I was stuck in second. Never ever again buy any Alfa's product. Almost 4 years now with the XC60 - wife;s car -and never have any issues.

    What a fantastic presence this car has, one might even say it has an "aura." And I love how you've staged your opening shot. Whether that was on purpose or not, having the black Alfa sitting in front of the other red Italian cars really makes a statement. So much to like about this car that finding faults is being nit picky. But I do have to pick some nits, one being the headlights. I really don't care for the three bulb headlight. I think it detracts from the uncluttered look of the rest of the front end. Even though the front end is relatively simple, it is a sinister simplicity. Having this car in black makes the whole thing look even more aggressive. Along with many other Alfisti, I'm so glad to see this car made it to production. Now if only they could become somewhat affordable again like they were upon release (they often sell for well over sticker in America.) Thanks Harry! As always, great job again this week! Cheers mate!

    Gorgeous thing, probably one of the most beautiful designs in the last 20 years, if not more. As a cheaper alternative, though, i would go for the Maserati GranTurismo, same glorious sounding engine and a third or less of the price, plus you can get it with a normal automatic (yes, manual would be awesome, but between the automated manual with temperamental solenoids and a proper ZF auto....), and the looks aren't too shabby either (it's gorgeous as well).
