As some others are pointing out, the "clone" allegations and the reason there's a different reaction to something coming along later on that takes inspiration is the "jumping on the bandwagon" mentality. When something extremely similar comes out right after the original, it comes across less as something created out of love and appreciation and more as something trying to ride the coattails of the original and capitalize on its popularity with minimal effort. If you're making something years later, it's more likely that you were inspired to make something based on enjoying the original, rather than just wanting to take advantage of a pre-existing fanbase.

    • @Lucifronz
      @Lucifronz 2 роки тому +101

Exactly. Releasing it immediately gives off the image, intentional or not, that you're trying to leech off of the original's popularity and make some easy money.
Releasing down the line when the interest has died down doesn't have that same effect, obviously, because people have moved on. If you can respark their interest and get people to buy your game, then you've earned it. Otherwise you're just stealing attention from a more popular game in the hopes you can feed off their success. It's bottom-feeding.

Honestly I think the biggest reason people saw enchanted portals as a rip off was the fact that it tried to do the 30s style animation while having aspects that don’t really fit with the theme. Bosses like the fonzy chicken or cow in space clash with the 30s style they’re going for with the animations and doesn’t seem cohesive. Cuphead did the 30s style as a way to add to the thematics of the game, enchanted portals did it because cuphead did it first and did it well.

There’s clearly attempts to make the whole game fit into the old times aesthetics beyond just drawing it in the style. EP feels the opposite, they did the 30’s style because cuphead did it.

It truly is a sad thing to see though as, although I am a big fan of Cuphead, I am as much of a fan of animation as a medium and I find it hard to say but in a way (and don’t misunderstand me but) Cuphead practically both revived and killed rubberhose animation in the eyes of the public.
Cuphead, in the eyes of most people, seems to be the sole contributor to rubberhose animation meaning that anyone attempting to recreate or pay homage to this classic style that has existed for nearly 100 years are bombared by people either calling them a copy of Cuphead’s art style or are comparing their work through the scrutiny that was set in Cuphead despite not deriving from or being based on it in any way,
this also means that certain artists attempting to commit to this style are not basing their work on actual old cartoons and animation their basing it entirely off of Cuphead which means any mistakes or inaccuracies found in Cuphead will be made by other artists to come such as Cuphead’s misuse of a big band soundtrack instead of something like an orchestral, ragtime, or blues centered one to represent rubberhose cartoons despite it never really being used which only serves to perpetuate the notion that it’s just broadly “jazz” and how it doesn’t really matter what song it is,
the worst and I find most disheartening fact about this being known as the “Cuphead style” is that now instead of being regarded as an actual art style it is eternally tied to a specific thing and sadly when Cuphead dies, in the minds of many people, so does the art.

I think the main reason people have a knee-jerk negative reaction to a "clone" kind of game coming out so soon after a majorly successful release has to do with the existence of no-effort cash-grab products that are really just meant to exploit uninformed consumers, typically either young children or older individuals who aren't as in touch with the primary media source. Y'know, those movies that come out with almost the same name as a huge release that was clearly made in like a month, stuff like that. None of the games shown here look like those kinds of games at all, Enchanted Portals would've practically been released at the point the kickstarter was announced if it was, but this kind of scenario is gonna cause some people to raise red flags in reaction regardless simply because of how often this kind of media comes out.

It's something we've seen forever in video games where when one developer does something successful we see either low effort cash grabs, or games made by people who want to make something good but don't have the talent, understanding, budget and or development time to make something more unique. We've seen it with Mario bros, Wizardry, Dragon Quest, Sonic, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, Doom, Quake, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot, Mario 64, Pokemon, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, Dark Souls and many more titles. Many of these games/series have seen attempt to copy some that are quite good and can definitely stand on their own merits including some titles on that list. We see it less these days due to the length of game development but is still happens.

I can't fault anyone for dismissing Enchanted Portals as a Cuphead clone because the game clings so ridiculously close to its inspiration. In addition to it being a boss-rush platformer-shooter with 1920's style animation, the main characters' animations and movement are so similar that they look like they've just been reskinned from Cuphead and Mugman. It might have some ideas of its own; the run and gun stages look cool and some of the bosses look interesting, but the developers aren't doing themselves any favors by copying extremely prominent aspects so directly.
I think comparing it to Crowsworn is inaccurate. Crowsworn certainly has similarities to Hollow Knight, but it has its own distinct visual style and mechanics. And appropriately, I've heard much much fewer people deride it as being a clone.
EDIT: I also think your description of Enchanted Portals' visual identity is really generous. They're undoubtedly trying to replicate Cuphead's style but just aren't pulling it off completely

I think the time aspect surrounding whether something gets called a clone or not has to do with the hype surrounding the already existing game. If a popular game is at the height of its success and someone announces a game that's almost exactly like it, it tends to feel like a hype-hopper and a cash grab sooner. Not to say i endorse calling games clones, but I do get why "the devs are just creating this bc they know it'll do well" would pop up in people's mind rather than "the devs are creating this bc its what they are truly passionate about".
Tbh, I think the cheap 'idle' games, the misleading mobile ads, and all those type of things have contributed majorly here, as they introduced us to the idea that devs might just be money hungry and willing to release a game they know is bad for cash - now translating that people see a game and think the same about it being "cheaply copied"

Not just games, movies too. People are tired of cheap, derivative, uninspired, knockoffs. This rage I think would be far better directed at Hollywood, but they seem to be criticism proof. Or at least criticism disinterested. But yeah, if anyone is old enough to remember how many Goldeneye 64 games that came out 1). I commiserate with you 2.)do you remember anyone complaining? Because I don't. Perfect Dark, Armorines, etc. It's especially prevalent in video games to build upon a previous model, that's how it's always been done. Doom became Goldeneye, Goldeneye became Halo, Halo became COD unfortunately, COD became Doom again, sharing mechanics, and engines for decades. I feel bad for these developers, I had never heard of this, and I think it would be great if this video re-inspired them and took away the stigma and undoubtedly the abuse they must have taken from people. I do agree that the "clone" mentality when it comes to games is stupid, but I will say that I feel enchanted portals doesn't really seem like it has any new ideas. I'm totally down for more Cuphead style, boss rush Run N' Guns, but enchanted portals feels like it doesn't have it's own identity. Visuals are very similar, and while I agree that at first glance it looks more in line with cartoon network shows, that's only because the visuals are too clean looking to be of the 1940's era of animation, as it lacks the same flickering and grain effects Cuphead uses. the way everything is animated is much more in vain of a 1940's style. because of that, it just ends up feeling like a poorly executed Cuphead. as for gameplay, of course there are going to be similarities in gameplay, but it should still bring some original ideas to the table. from what I've seen, the only unique mechanic in enchanted portals is a double jump, which seems to be a replacement for parrying to give the player less restricted vertical mobility and air control, which could make for more vertically based bosses than we saw in Cuphead, which would be cool. all in all, I really want this game to find it's own legs to stand on, but until then, i feel the clone accusations aren't too farfetched.

Yes! Exactly this! The problem I have with Enchanted Portals is that they went for the 1920s artstyle specifically. Cuphead very deliberately made everything look like it was ripped straight out of a 20s cartoon, but Portals has everything so clean and crisp that it looks like a flash game. Again, Cuphead doesn't own 20s art, but I could see this being so much better had they just gone for a slightly more modern approach. 40s-50s Looney Tunes would be so fun and the cleaner aspects would make sense.

Clones can be good games, but there's something that can be missing in these, their identity. One thing is inspiration, when a game is inspired by other but forms it owns identity, for example Undertale. But these types of games don't have their own identity, now, you can say that the animation is essentially different and that is a different style but that doesn't create their own identity, why do you think so MANY people pointed at this game and said "Cuphead Clone"? Because it's just like the original game with a few changes.
Like i said, that doesn't mean the game is gonna be bad and i'm sure many people want this game because it's just like Cuphead, heck that's exactly the reason why i'm looking for Crowsworn, but this means the game won't be as memorable for someone that has already played the original game, the player could have a fun time and everything but in your memory in the distant future it's gonna be like you played an expansion for the original game, or a fangame or just exactly what it is, a clone.
I feel like the developers have the capacity to do something more unique with their skills, i hope that we will see that someday.

I think the reason a game which is visually inspired by another is only accepted after considerable time has passed, is because it makes it clear the Devs aren't making the game to ride the hype train.
In *Mina the Hollower* 's case, it's been 20+ years since the games it's taking inspiration from. Any claim that it's attempting to ride the coattails of Zelda (OoA and OoS specifically) would be ludicrous.
*Enchanted Portals* on the other hand was announced comparatively soon after the release of Cuphead (~2 years). Meaning not only was it still pretty fresh in peoples minds, but it implied the devs saw the success of Cuphead and got right to work on their own project. Is that true? Unlikely. But it's still probably the reason people reacted with such ferocity.
Also remember, the main thing people criticized EP for was it's visual inspiration. Seeing as Cuphead's visuals *are* it's biggest claim to fame, that's yet another reason it was reacted to the way it was. I think if EP had different graphics, even *that* would keep people from getting angry.

Maja Moldenhaur, the lead producer and inker of Cuphead, has stated that Studio MDHR don’t really have much of a plan for Cuphead going forward after the DLC and since we are already aware that production takes a significant amount of labour and time, given that it took a whole 7 years to make, and it’s popularity seems to wane from being incredibly talked about to the game practically being dead only a couple months after it’s launch in 2017. I find it a bit sad yet understandable to think that from what we know there most likely isn’t going to be a definitive sequel to Cuphead so I find it very important that many Cuphead fans understand that
*it is solely up to fan games like Enchanted Portals to keep this challenging and ascetically beautiful game design alive*

I feel like if you market the game based on the rubber hose style and can’t fully commit to it, it shouldn’t be done at all. The shading and backgrounds are very reminiscent of Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, so with a few minor design changes I believe the whole art style copying contrivorcy could have been mostly avoided.

Literally look at 4:00 those sharks look like they would be sum you see in cuphead. Not only that but the gloves one of the main characters uses is cartoonish gloves you'd see in 1940's animation AND the characters use a finger gun to shoot. You’re looking at the similarities to Cuphead in a vacuum. They’re cumulative. This game, from what they’ve shown, has absolutely no significant differences that make it stand out. Nobody calls Hollow Knight a clone of Metroid because, while it takes inspiration from it, it has drastically different artstyle, tone, story, and combat. It has things to set it apart. Nobody calls Undertale a clone of Earthbound because the morality system, meta commentary on completionism, different era humor, and bullet hell battles make it a drastically different experience. The reason why no one called Mina the Hollower a clone of Zelda is because Yacht Club is a beloved studio who, if their past work is any indication, will do a lot to make Mina unique.

Cant tell if you’re being facetious about the part where you veer off on the “knockoff” rant but you seem pretty genuine.
The reason this aspect is so contested is because the Devs of games like Cuphead and HK are the ones burning trails and putting in the hard work to meticulously develop a look and feel for the game’s artstyle. For a game to come by /immediately/after and harp a lot of that work seems like less effort is being put in. They don’t own the style, you’re right, but it’s far less endearing to see something follow a trend than come up with a concept that helps it stand apart.

Often imitation is the best form of flattery.
Whilst not everything that is inspired from the original is good (a lot aren't) there's a lot of innovation that can stem from inspiration.
I think how we (as society) approach things that seem like "copies" of something more popular is done rather poorly.
Rather than us immediately bashing a company, artist, or dev studio for simply creating "clone" of a popular game, we should be voting with our wallets. Let the devs have a chance to prove our skepticism wrong, and if they're right, we'll be pleasantly surprised. If not, then the dislikes and calling it a lazy ripoff will be more warranted.
Instead we stifle creative freedom by shunning any studio or artist for simply wanting to attempt their own spin at something that may have inspired them, before they even had a chance to show it for what it's worth.
In the case with their crowdfunding, I can understand the skepticism and not wanting to fund it, but the continued harassment/bashing it after the fact gets seems unjust and pretty poor.

I think the reason people use "clone" when it's so close to release and "inspired" years down the line is because of devs that make games to capitalize on the popularity. For example, when indie games become popular, like Bendy as an example, and multiple other games pop up, people may think that it is just to make money with what's popular. This is especially true if a game is low quality. However, years later, it may make people think that it is inspired because the popularity of the game in the moment has faded, this making it seem like it was just inspired.
That is just my speculation though.

I definitely have to disagree with most of your opinions on this video. Crowsworn, despite being heavily inspired by hollow knight and criticized to death by the community for it, managed to exceed their funding goal. I believe the reason for this is because, unlike Crowsworn, Enchanted Portals has no unique feel to it. It legitimately looks like a reskin of cup head. And while some of the characters seem to have some calarts aesthetics to them, the overall style seems to lean towards the same animations that inspired cuphead. Also, the reason why a game like Mina is acceptable to the public, is because games like The Legend or Zelda that were on the game boy, have long since faded from the mainstream public attention. Cuphead is still incredibly strong in the minds of the people, so to make a game so incredibly similar is bound to make people somewhat defensive. Finally, while Cuphead does not have a “monopoly” over old style animation, run and gun weapon variety, and other mechanics, it feels incredibly cheap that Enchanted Portals uses most of the same mechanics with barely any differentiation from cuphead. Had Enchanted Portals kept only one or two main inspirations from cuphead while changing up the rest of its gameplay and style, the game would have been slightly more well received by the people. While crowsworn is similar enough to hollow knight to garner hate, it is unique enough to be fully supported by the fans.

The difference between copying and taking inspiration is variety, taking a bunch of different ideas and blending them together. You can take the art stile from one genre, the story from another, the mechanics from something else. I could make a game about Norse Mythology (God of War), with a cartoonish style and pokemon-like mechanics and it would work perfectly. The problem would be making a game that takes story, mechanics, style and literally everything else from the same source. That is the problem with Enchanted Portals, literally everything about it is 'inspired' by cuphead.

When it was first revealed, I thought it looked pretty good, some of the concepts were pretty cool, a princess boss that turns into a frog? A Beethoven(?)/music themed boss? That was actually really great, and I loved the robot cow idea for some reason haha. But yeah, that whole twitter buzz was *insane* man, people were pointing out the style, which, like you said, wasn't started from Cuphead, but people hated on it for that. And the comparisons for the characters in Enchanted Portals and Cuphead were actually insane, a *whole lot* of the comparisons were MAJOR reaches, and more than half didn't even make sense! It actually hurt me for some reason, they even said the whole trailer was animated by one person (whether that applies for the game itself too, I don't remember), and the video progress of an alien animation made me bummed that people just ran this indie game away. I didn't even know it was coming back, but that's great to hear the devs are actually getting a chance at making their game, even though its with Epic Games, they sure as hell saw potential and not everyone and anyone else. You were also right on the clone thing, and how the mindset is by ignorant fans who don't want to accept something of the same genre/variety will stand with theirs (smash and pokemon come to mind), I'm hoping we see more of Enchanted Portals in general. It's a fun idea and the fact that they're doing full on levels alongside bosses is great, and I hope everything in the initial trailer is in the final game.

I there’s some merit to the clone allegations; all of the individual elements could be copied without issue, but it’s nearly every aspect of the game being reused. That’s not a problem in itself (remakes, fangames, etc., all exist and can be great), but it seems like most people read it as “trying to make money off the cuphead trend.” The biggest issue I have is with the art quality. I think it’s well done, but it fails to imitate the old cartoon style, and instead feels like an uncomfortable and unpleasant mix between conflicting visual styles. Tbh it’s mostly the tweening that throws me off (and the framerate seems unnaturally high for hand-drawn animation)?

In my honest opinion, you’re correct in many ways. I’ve seen a lot of clones and ripoffs and some can be fun, but others are just ripoffs.
If they don’t want to be called that, try a different style at the start. Don’t present it to be immediately similar. For examples:
Instead of holding their wands and start off with a rapid fire (which is probably the very first reason people consider it a ripoff, because come on. Peashooter?) How about start with a charged shot, because magicians need to aim their magic proper? Deal normal damage, have a short charge time?
Then for their magical power, instead of just a slow moving fireball, why not an aimed icicle attack from above? Hold down the super button to gauge the distance, and activate it! Boom, cool magic attack!
How about instead of a Hermit Crab, why not make a shark-looking mechanical pirate boat, if they’re already going to use a shark?
I see some differences and some attentions to detail, like the gravestone attack having a different damage animation, but right now, first impressions are not good, and I cannot blame others for thinking why it’s like that.

It's certainly not the first or only game to use or even heavily centre every aspect around that style - _and that's true even just within the year it was released._ Say what you will about how the games actually stack up or compare in other ways, but it's fairly undeniable that basically all those statements about 1930s animation, style, themes and integration/importance throughout the game could also be applied to Bendy and The Ink Machine, and BATIM was released about half a year before Cuphead.

The thing about things that are called clones is, they feel like they just copy other properties on a superficial level, Cuphead itself is "ripping off" 30's cartoons but it doesn't come off that way does it? Because the creators loved something so much they wanted to create something new that precisely replicated and built upon everything they liked about the source material, That's why everyone says it was "inspired by" or a "loveletter to" rubber hose animation and shoot em ups, enchanted portals however, feels like it just goes "let's just take the exact Cuphead formula and make new levels with it" which, admittedly, could work, but it doesn't feel like they tried to make it with their own style, they're just clumsily imitating what Cuphead did.
They could have used another style they understood better, enchanted portal feels like they're going "oh, pacman eyes and gloves === 30's style"

I do hope Enchanted Portals gets better feedback and support one day, even if I myself might not play it.

The only earlier Mega Man games I can think of with more consistent quality with the stages are 4 and, in my opinion, 6. Otherwise, if you're not liking the stages in these games, I don't really know what to tell you, and unfortunately, the NES era of Robot Master boss fights aren't really that great compared to the roster from the games you've played.

I think what you’re missing here is that when ‘clones’ like Enchanted Portals come out (or aim to come out) so near to the launch of the game they’ve been inspired by, it looks as though they are attempting to cash in on that game’s popularity at launch, and yes they could potentially take sales away. This would be particularly true for games such as Cup Head where a cheaper and easier alternative might be preferable for some gamers. The other games you mention are undoubtedly just as much clones but the length of time suggests an homage or genuine inspiration - put simply Enchanted Portals is an obvious cash-in, more so than other titles

I still find it weird how social media completly went nuts when the devs made a boss that looks like native Americans but when they changed them to cowboys made it okay. If that is not double standards I do not know what it is.

    • @kidcat3000

This is why context is so important. The reason people take offense is the centuries of abuse and prejudice against indigenous Americans. From the Trail of Tears, to driving buffalo to near extinction to hurt them, to modern day depictions. They were ostracized and to some extent still are.
This is and never has been the case for cowboys. Nobody has ever hunted cowboys, or forced them off land as they were the enforcers in charge. The depictions of cowboys in pop culture were hero-like, with “native americans” always being the bad guys. The reason people want to try and stop this is to stop perpetuating the centuries long narrative of them as bad guys and to stop using their sacred garments as set dressing for our amusement. It’s not double standards, not even close.

    What I found interesting is...
Cuphead went more towards analogue means of production, keeping the digital to a necessary minimum, just so it could feel as faithful to the media style that was their influence. But it was not only too expensive but surely too taxing on everyone (even if they took their breaks, relaxed periodically, I can imagine it would drain them their energy).
Enchanted Portals does use analogue in the sketching phase, but is mainly digital. Which is not a bad thing IMO, but sets a different tone in that they want it to be inspired by the old media style without making maximum commitment that would cost them too much.
So to say, Cuphead was ambitious, and succeeded greatly. Enchanted Portals is not as ambitious, but shouldn't be seen as a shameless clone... After all, what is better? "This second cake doesn't look as good as the first one I had" or "Oh boy! Two cakes!"?
In case I wasn't clear enough... I want to see Enchanted Portals happen and be a success too.

I feel like enchanted portals will be the “heretic” to cupheads “doom”
Like cupheads inevitably gonna be the more popular and praised one
But I feel like enchanted portals will more unique then people give it credit for
Back the the id tech comparison for a second doom was more technically impressive while heretic is more complex while still keeping it simple such as heretic has an inventory system and the tome of power maybe enchanted portals will have something like that like a collectable item that can be brought into other stages to make your attacks different for a short time such like in heretic the elven wand is a pistol clone without the tome and then turns into a auto hitscan shotgun with 2 extra projectiles or the phenix rod being a discount rocket launcher then turning into a flame thrower with the tome
imagine something like that in enchanted portals you collect a item in a platforming stage then when you go to a boss stage (or any stage really) you can activate it for a short time and make it easier
And before I have to defend my opinion on heretic
Heretic is a better game then doom don’t @ me although doom is more iconic and I do play doom more due to some of the admittedly stupid bs in later episodes in heretic especially on harder skills

So, since we’ve been starving for another 2D DK game in years, I loved Yoka Laylee even more for not only offering more of that fun gameplay, but also for doing their own spin on the idea and developing it further.
The problem with clones is that their reputations as of late have been tarnished with big wig execs just wanting to cash in on the latest trends. Fortnight clones with their tacked on battle royales modes come to mind. And even Fornight itself got into hot waters for mimicking Among Us with a survival murder mystery mode. I think that if the clone is done with care and respect, more so to expand on the genre, then it’s fine.

Maybe you could get the Legacy Collections if you only care about the boss fights, there's some challenge modes in both collections to only fight the bosses, and in legacy collection 2 you can fight the 32 robot masters from the included games straight from the gallery
Something to beware those challenge modes is that you need to beat some of them in order to get to the boss fights, wich includes platforming challenges, but from what I remember most of the challenges give you all weapons from the start, so ideally you can skip some sections with the Beam from mega Man 1, items 1, 2 and 3 from mega man 2 and Rush gadgets from Mega Man 3-10

Really liked your video! Well done, however I disagree with your point ( 1:20 ) where you mentioned that people don‘t care to call current game-projects a clone 'only' because the original game was released a long time ago.
The time span is very relevant for people not to be iffy about a clone. I want to refer to a current project called 'Anton Blast'. Without a doubt it‘s basically a Wario Land 4 revival. It looks, sounds and plays like Wario Land 4. The reason for people, even fully aware of this being basically a Wario Land 4 clone, to rather welcome this project because the Wario Land series pretty much has been abandoned by Nintendo, leaving a group of fans of the Wario Land series behind. Offering this group a very similar gaming experience is welcomed, while being fully aware of this being a clone of a videogame in the past.
The difference here is that Cuphead today, especially today, is still relevant; it‘s still being developed, a large fanbase still being active, a Netflix show etc. etc. When a certain product is still relevant to this day, obvious clones of it will be perceived as rather uninspired, cheap and unfortunately even grifty. Not saying it‘s right to think that way but that pretty much explains and even justifies (to a degree) the thoughts and feels towards this CupHead inspired game.

This video opened my eyes to clones not being a bad thing. I fully agree, clones can release inspired by other games and be worked on soon after. If you couldn't do that, then why would people immediately try to add more content to already existing games through modding as soon as a console releases? People are now able to mod the Nintendo Switch and the things people are doing with Super Mario Odyssey are crazy. Oh, but suddenly if someone makes a game inspired by SMO because they liked it so much and wanted to add more/their own twist on it, they're irredeemable.
