- In the first of a ten part series in which Fanbookz brings you two videos a day from Oliver Kahn (Bayern Munich) and Peter Schmeichel (Manchester United) all week (19th-23rd January), the keepers discuss all things football.
In Part One: Legendary goalkeepers Peter Schmeichel and Oliver Kahn go over their thoughts on the '99 Champions League Final and why Man United were able to get back into the game.
It's football gold, Manchester United's 2-1 win over Bayern Munich, 26th May 1999. Manchester United and Bayern Munich had only met twice in competitive matches before the '99 final, so anything could happen. But after a dodgy start United snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

I love how a lot of older foreign players when referring to United in their native language just say "Manchester". Just a small thing, but it makes me smile.
Back when city were a nothing club without oil money
Manchester is red. Always will be.
@Colloquial Soliloquy I'm old enough to remember playing International Superstar Soccer on my N64...ISS 64. It was kind of the sister game to PES; they were both developed by Konami. It was the better game in many people's opinions.
They'd have all these ridiculous players that were obviously based on famous characters who they hadn't got the licenses for: so you'd play as Colombia, and there'd be some guy called 'Wildorama' with a huge blonde afro and moustache, that kind of thing.
It was a better game in many ways than PES, especially in terms of controls, because ISS could use the N64 analogue stick which meant the players could move in more than just eight directions. so dribbling was more realistic. It was also much faster and more responsive, because it was on cartridge rather than being run off a disc.
I don't really enjoy football games anymore, don't know why. I think they've lost their way since the PS2/Xbox days.
@@thesprawl2361 I got ISS pro evolution on PS1 after the first 2 N64 ISS games. PES animation and shooting and passing was vastly superior and realistic on PES. However long passes were much better on the N64. The Snes ISS games were great and the first.
@@alexojideagu Some things were better on N64, others were better on PS.
My one abiding memory is that I'd play it quite late at night, once my parents and sisters had gone to bed, and the commentator had this line _'fresh blood is coming on'_ whenever you'd make a substitution. The way he said it was, unintentionally, deeply creepy and used to send a shiver down my spine.
Love the way Oliver Kahn speaks. Sounds like a refined Arnold Schwarzenegger!
On same level. Different fields
Not at all. Totally different. Kahn deep Germany and Schwarzenegger different country styria in Austria. Very distinctive accent
@@theultrasound1394 Arnold very distinctive
Nothing alike. Stupid comment
@@theultrasound1394 true.. just an observation if 1.2 billion people can sound the same no harm in bringing 90 million together (combined population of Germany and Austria) . And obviously Arnie's been in the States for a while. Look at it more along the lines of Arnie saying "Get to the chopper" and the way Kahn is speaking.
Kahn looks more 'human' here...
When he played, he was such a beast
No nonsense keeper
Looks human indeed.
Indeed..
I think he is such nice guy, off and on the pitch 🏆
That's a pair of Alphas right there. Two toughest goalkeepers you'll ever see.
even after 10 or 20 years, they're still the best. Look at the crap we've gotten since then, apart from Van Der Sar and Buffon, even Casillas, who actually belong to their generation, the best are like Neuer, De Gea, Courtois? Far from being monsters, these guys are lightweight compared to the monsters of the past. I keep my hopes on Donnaruma, perhaps the closest to that level in 10 to 20 years.
@@fearlessdestiny neuer is a beast
@Ve2vi neuer isn't anywhere close to being the greatest lol. He is the most overrated keeper.
@Ve2vi He is overrated asf stop smoking dope.
@Ve2vi when kahn was playing for Germany the national side wasn't so great compared to the side Neuer played under. Still kahn helped them reach a final which they lost against a star studded Brazil side. Schemichel won everything and helped Denmark win the 92 Euro.
Khan seems super chill here, he was nuts as a player.
2 legendary Goalkeepers !!!
Of this generation of goalkeepers only Buffon can stand up to their level .
And Edwin van der Sar.
Neuer.
axel witsel Oh cause he had one good world cup he's among the best of our generation of goalkeepers?
Vivek Varghese Because he was nominated for the Ballon'dOor. which only one goalkeeper has won and that was back in the sixties or something like that
Emanuel Karlsson He got nominated BECAUSE of the world cup he had, doesn't mean he deserved it, for all other years apart from the world cup years, player's form is looked at only for a season, it's unfair to judge only on a WC as it's the whole team playin and the German team this year were fantastic especially the defence.
two of the most feared keepers to ever to grace a football pitch
You find these two wankers fearsome? Jesus wept
Celtic Spirit Bet you feel tough behind your keyboard
Adam nothing to do with that what so ever mate. We just have a different idea of what the word fearsome represents.
Celtic Spirit Both were 6"2 / 6"3 respectively n in their prime probably like 190lbs. Big athletic guys, strong and vocal leaders on the pitch. Pretty scary to most people if one of those came at you
Adam i disagree.
Two words for this video : Class and Legends
indeed.
thats 3
Dolph Lundgren and Matt Damon
))
top
Damon is a manlet, those two guys are big guys.
I love how Kahn seamlessly changes between English and German. :D
Anyway, I look forward to watching the rest of this interview, both are legends of the game and I like how this interview seems more like a conversation between two friends than anything more formal.
tcpgblizzard a bit off topic, but this is common for Indians. Our style of speech has been almost made into a new language. The Hinglish language.
hain ji tum bilkul right ho
I've noticed this little quirk, it always seems rather odd to me and yet oddly charming at the same time :D
He is mostly just translating what Peter says.
Oh mate, love your profile pic.
Kahn probably still feeling guilty after shooting that kid in Breaking Bad just when they thought the train robbery had gone off without a hitch.
Hahaha nice one
dude this comment blast me out of nowhere!!!
i know that refrence
When a comment deserves 2 likes
Clearly a few BB fans watching this video...
Yooo..dude i watch Breaking Bad too and finish the series in the final season.. But i dont get it.. What do you say? Can you explain?
Oliver Kahn was a madman but also a majestic keeper and the sole reason that Germany reached the WC final..And Schmeichel is just the best keeper the Prem has ever seen
Dancing Bear lmao
Nice one getting this interview sorted! Looking forward to more including the one we're posting later!
WITH BOTH PETER AND KAHN?!
yes
The world don't see this kind of goalkeeper anymore. Oliver n Peter were so terrified... These two are legendary, they both achieved almost everything in their careers. Respect
These two Legends are the reason why I love playing as a Goalie.
Oh damn me too
Collina is such a legend, being not only an outstanding referee with unmatched presence on the field but also an awesome character for motivating the already resigned Bayern players, that the match is still not over. What a class act he was...
Oliver Kahn - the new Terminator? : ) Schmeichel's accent - WOW.
Two legends. Germanic people ❤️
2 amazing keepers. Great seeing them together.
Keane and Scholes both suspended for that game ripped the heart out of central midfield. We road our luck to be fair but in the end it was what Fergie built into his sides that got them through. Shear determination and willpower to never give in. I was behind the Bayern net in the 2nd half and it's a night I'll never forget.
For me, these are the two greatest keepers ever right here. My absolute favourites. If I was making a dream team, these are the keepers I would want on it, bar none.
two goalkeeping legends. incredible to watch this
Why am I just now seeing this? My two favorite keepers ever, but especially in the late 90s/early 2000s. My biggest influences as a young keeper and my favorite champions league match to this day.
Best goalkeepers ever
When i see both them is like im come back in time
two legends!
2 legends kahn still looks scary
Two legends
These guys were mad dogs on the field . Off the pitch they're like the chill uncle who takes you for your first beer.
I love when they talks. This two legendary beasty goalkeepers is my fave. Buffon, u just one more step more to leveling them.
I remember watching this game with my dad, he was so angry that united won, haha. My dads favourite keeper was Kahn and mine was Schmeichel.
2 legends
Everyone remembers where they were, on that magical night.
Humble Legends!!!
THIS IS GOLD!
They both are best goal keeper ever and the legends too
grew up as a young goalkeeper inspired by these two. Legends!
Wow!!!! The two Legends...you can feel
I love these legends
Two legends!
Two legends ❤️❤️❤️
Oliver khan was a scary ass dude back in the day...and a very good goalkeeper...an asset to German football
Amazing!.. I remember this final vividly. Still so difficult to watch it again.. just the way Bayern lost the game. Man United had a great season over all, so they deserved to win, regardless of their performance in that game.
Perspective's a funny thing, I'm a United fan so I don't find it difficult to watch at all :D Must still give Bayern fans nightmares though, blimey...
Childhood legends :D
Two of the best i ve ever seen!
How I wish I could go back to 1999
respect legends!
This could go down as the best game but i recognise there are other games and more to come but what can be said with all certainty is the man, Pierluigi Collina, adored!! Mins 2:08, when Peter points out. Just swells my heart up. Love the man, Love football!
Probatly two of the most badass keepers ever.
two of the all-time greats that have ever stood between the posts.
2 rivalry legends
My personal heroes sitting together! Awesome! 😍👍
Love this. More if it please
Kahn can play Arnie's role in Terminator. He looks so menacing.

LEGENDS
2 Legends
Real high. I've been a goalkeeper for 15 years and idolised Peter from age 9. I learnt all his methods and characteristics and have supported Man Utd as a child.
All throughout this series I found myself agreeing with every single point Peter raised on every video. Oliver Kahn is beyond obnoxious in the whole series and can tell he's either not interested in his points, disagrees with his points, doesn't like it when he disagrees and either cuts him off to change subject (Denis Irwin) or ends it completely. And I agree with the bad luck superstition with the hands question.
Peter is the only keeper I have no bad word to say over the last 20 years. Only Buffon and we Gea have earned that right since.
Thank you Peter for your humility, sense of humour, teachings about respect and all the goalkeeping aspects (which is the least important in the grand scheme of things). I've learnt more about all facets of life and how to be and handle yourself as a person from Peter than any teacher.
For the Keepers: 6.25/5
Man,first time ever am seeing kahn laugh!never thought he was capable of that!....in my random thoughts,i sometimes think kahn would've made a good Gestapo officer...*i will see myself out now*
Kahn was a TV-pundit for years and first he surprized a lot of people because he actuall was very charming unlike the player Kahn.
Now he works again for Bayern Munich as a board member and will become chairman eventually.
@@Shore1985 👍thx for the info
@8dzenja6 very well said!we lack passion on the pitch now....
Really respect them both there talking about it. And the other substitution was Basler.
Oliver Kahn looks like a father figure whom i will never mess with, I will be so obedient if he was my father
2 legend ❤❤❤
The two best keepers of the 90's.
These two legends put the fear in strikers
two great big and legend gol kepper very wonderful
Two of the all time best
That was the best final!!!!
I vividly remember this match. I was a teenager when we won the treble. It was *mental* - more emotion in a few minutes than I'd ever felt before.
And contrary to everyone else, I didn't feel like we 'always had a chance'. Bayern were an awful, dismal, boring team that season under Hitzfeld: horribly defensive, incredibly boring and dull, with a handful of half-decent players and mostly built on physicality.
....BUT, they were brilliantly organised, and once you went behind to them it was unlikely that you got back into the game. So I didn't see any way back in until those magical last six or seven minutes, when the match started to fray a little at the edges, Bayern hit the post and reality started to wobble and judder, and the whole Bayern house of cards began to collapse.
Bayern's strengths were very simple: organisation, mental toughness, physicality and towering Teutonic arrogance. They had Jancker, a huge gormless carnival freak of a centre forward, and they'd often lump it up to him to score, or to hold the ball up. And they scored from a typically flukey, ugly set-piece(which shouldn't have been awarded, since it wasn't a foul).
And after that we created very little. We didn't play well either. They were too well organised, and SO defensive. Seriously, they were unbelievably boring to watch. My idea of hell would be watching Ottmar Hitzfeld's Bayern play ninety minutes over and over again.
It would have been an *atrocity* if Bayern had won the CL that season. They had played terrible, tedious football all throughout the competition - United, on the other hand, had thrilled the entirety of Europe with some of the greatest matches in the Champions' League's history, from the Barcelona group games to the Juventus semi final. It was divine justice that Bayern lost and United won.
Don't get me wrong:
Bayern have had great teams over the years. But the Hitzfeld teams were just horrible to watch. They were anti-football. They were also enormously arrogant, with a team full of famous arseholes, like Basler, Matthaus and Effenberg. So it was satisfying to see them crumble in the last couple of minutes, and it was extremely satisfying to snatch the cup out of Lothar Matthaus's grasping greedy hands after he looked so confident coming off in the last few minutes.
It remains the most intense moment in my life of watching football. That whole season was so full of crazy rollercoaster reversals and last minute wins(Liverpool in the FA Cup!), and impossible tightrope walk wins that United supporters like me had almost gotten used to something insane happening late on. But this was just...unprecedented. I remember I ran through the house screaming like a lunatic, woke up my little sisters, must've scared the shit out of them, and lost my voice for the next couple of days.
Other teams will win trebles. But no-one will win a treble in such an insane way, with such an insanely entertaining, crazy season, with so many epic games in it.
Well f*cking said.
Best reaction i ever saw ^^
glad to see that they make a friends
They always respected each other, same with casillas and buffon, or seaman and schmeichel
5 years! Thanks for UA-cam

This is so brutal.
wow kahn speaks excellent english
In 15 years I want Neuer and Cech sitting next to each other and watch the Champions League Final 2012 again
It was "Schmeichel vs Kahn". Now "Schmeichel & Kahn".
Beautiful..
they both are legends have won ucl
Kahn, Goat.
wow..
this is the first time i've seen kahn smiling..
His head must be upside down.
Kahn look very good
that night bayern played tidier and so much more organized
but united had more spirit towards the end of the match
I am... creating... confusion.
Love how Kahn is speaking German while schmeichel is nodding away in agreement
Because he versteht es
Since he is danish, I'd guess he has some knowledge of the German language
@@Laszlo5897 Danes have easier time understanding the languages of their neighbor countries than their own language. They speak to slurry to understand each other.
@@danfors1333 What a load of BS - found the Swede
Who's here after reading Peter's new book first chapter? Creating chaos......
Germans always serious.. just look at khan’s face the whole video.. that anger out of nowhere 🤣
