  • Goalkeeping legends Peter Schmeichel and Oliver Kahn talk about the Champions League Final ’99, Manchester United's 2-1 win over Bayern Munich, 26th May 1999. (Part 2 of 10)
Peter Schmeichel talks about the amazing 10 days Man United had back in '99 and his last game for United. They chat about how Kahn ignored Peter because he was in another world. In his defence, Peter says that Germans do that to other people all the time. Kahn also tells the story of the UEFA President who didn’t see any of the last minute United goals.
It's football gold, Manchester United's 2-1 win over Bayern Munich, 26th May 1999. Manchester United and Bayern Munich had only met twice in competitive matches before the '99 final, so anything could happen. But after a dodgy start United snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Bayern were in RIBBONS at the final whistle.. Was good to see them win the prize 2 years later as I genuinely felt for them.. All the greats know about both sides of the coin. Peter Schmeichel with league titles won n lost. If the topmost clubs didn't fall down but every once in a while. Most of us would tune out.. As a Hammers fan I'm left to enjoy many pyrrhic victories.. Keeps the juices flowing.

They had originally hung Bayern's ribbons on the handles. If you look again you'll see Man Utd were awarded the trophy without ribbons.
Personally I'd have left them on, just to signify what had happened. Would have made a good pub quiz question.

@@markusnashorn1145 I’m not quite sure why they bothered either but there is footage of the trophy coming out with red ribbons which are not there when the United players are lifting it. Possibly United and Bayern’s reds are officially different shades though I doubt anyone would have noticed. When receiving his medal, Teddy Sheringham also famously stops to look at the cup to check if the wrong name has been engraved on it.

@@markusnashorn1145 After 6 years, I can’t remember everything Schmeichel and Kahn talked about now, but I have heard several times the story that when Johansson the UEFA President left his seat to get ready for the ceremony Bayern were winning 1-0 and by the time he came back outside he was astonished to discover Man Utd celebrating victory. So I can imagine the chaos. Presumably they just couldn’t find United’s ribbons in time.

That being said, Schmeichel will always be considered a Man United legend and not a City legend. United was still miles ahead of City back then, so his status within United isn't as damaged as Tevez, who joined a much more competitive Manchester City than Schmeichel

@@rifqueandiqha5306 We can agree to disagree on his betrayal if you will, but he's still a Manchester United legend who was a serial winner for them. When he joined City, he was way past his prime in a lackluster team and, unlike Joe Hart or Ederson, Schmeichel will never be remembered as part of City's legendary goalkeepers 20 years from now. So I don't think that his only year at City ruined his legacy at Manchester United, where he played for several years in his prime, but I see where you're coming from
