Hey Dan. I watch your videos all the time. You're brilliant. and completely right. I just want to say thank you for representing the gay community so well :)
This is such an amazing video. How much did you rehearse/write down beforehand? It sounds like a fantastic speech, better than most that people prepare.
@53dumey In all honesty, a gay couple who goes through either artificial insemination or adoption in order to get a child, both processes which are very emotionally and financially difficult, is going to absolutely love and cherish and treasure that child because they had to give up and go through so much in order to have a child. Those children will be way more loved than the millions of children born to straight people who abuse them, neglect them, and even sometimes have abortions.
@valegorn Not having the "shame on us" attitude would be the kissing ass problem I mentioned earlier. Sometomes you have to say what people don't want to hear.
I am very curious...which hospital in Florida refused to allow access? I will make sure and not support that hospital. Orlando as of 2011 now has a domestic partner registry...which should allow access to partners. However, keep in mind its stops at the border of Orlando. Does anyone know if religious organizations, like Florida Hospital being a Seventh Day Adventist Institution, allows full access to gay couples?
completely true. glad somebody can step aside from blind patriotism to look at the reality of what kind of country we really are. it's quite a sad thing, honestly.
Gotta love Dan. When he's right, HE IS RIGHT!! America always wants to pat itself on the back for being innovative and original when in reality we are anything but.
But back to this clip, what a sharp dude! Funny but pinpoint accurate, I loved it. The American culture has created infinite positive memories for me in terms of music, film, fashion, etc; but politics and religious fanaticism are the opposing element. Shame on the US for being one of the last
@valegorn The problem isn't that America "isn't always the leader in civil rights," its that America has never been the leader in any civil right. Not with gays, not with women, and the only reason that America was so quick to free the slaves was because of an executive order from Abraham Lincoln (Emancipation Proclomation) which by the way half the country hated him for doing it and the other half, most of them thought it was unnecessary. But as Dan pointed out, England had already done that.
Same sex marriage is legal in Argentina, and it's one of the things that makes me proud of my country and gives me hope for all the other countries. Still there people here who are against it, but it seems so simple to me, people should be able to marry whoever they love and want to marry and all families should be protected.
Marriage should be about love and building a life together, period. People somehow keep missing the fact that it's now medically possible, although only in a few fertility clinics around the world, for a same sex couple to have their own biological child. A process was developed that can convert an egg or sperm into the other required cell and then join with the appropriate cell to start the development of the child. It's expensive, but it's possible and it won't be rare one day.
I wasn't talking about women being "mistreated" per se. Someone can be treated exceptionally well and still be considered property and have their rights unfairly limited. Marriage as a whole may be (largely, I wouldn't say completely) based on sex, but that doesn't matter. It doesn't matter to an elderly couple, it doesn't matter to a couple that decides no to have children. As long as those people are not excluded from the institution, there's no reason to exclude gay people.
"There simply is no public outcome to a homosexual relationship over and above friendship." Marriage gives the same securities to a gay couple (and their children) as it does to a straight couple and their children. And since gay people ARE raising children, society is benefited by the securities given to those families just as it is benefited by giving those securities to straight couples who have their own children or adopt.
The Conservative Party elected a woman leader, who then became Prime Minister because the Conservatives were the party in power. When we the people were given the opportunity to vote for her, the party went from 151 members to 2 (neither of which were Kim Campbell). So I'm not sure we deserved to be mentioned. (On the plus side, since one of them was Elsie Wayne, the Tories were the only party in parliament whose caucus was 50% women.)
I'm single and I would like to have a close friend with me when I die. I acknowledge that gay rights are important but I am also concerned with single people's rights.
(cont) If people want to insist that "marriage" can only be between one man and one woman, I'm fine with that. But they must then admit that institution is discriminatory, and the government has no business acknowledging such marriages. So give everyone a "civil union" only (gay or straight) and let people decide for themselves if they want to be "married" in a church, or by jumping over a broom, or whatever.
@roelvanacker You said, and I quote " "however, when settling down (as many gays do) they often have monogamous and loyal relationships - but society seems not so keen on us doing so, since we can't call what we already gave a 'marriage' (yet) " " Again, why do you feel that Marriage (Gay or Hetero ) makes people monogamus ? OR that Gays who are married would be more Monogamus than Heteros ?
pretty much NO ONE argues that any church should be required to do so. We fucking want civil marriage from the state for everyone. Churches can refuse to marry mixed religion couples if they want for example. that is their freedom of religion. but the state sure as hell has to marry people regardless of religion. and it ought to regardless of gay or straight
Minor correction, the US's record on gay marriage is better than Europe. 15% of Americans live in a state with marriage equality, while less than 5% of citizens of EU states (and that's not counting the more backwards parts of Europe like Russia or Turkey) live in nations with marriage equality. We are ahead of Europe on this issue.
People who feel comfortable with straight males being favored and with all the power and being the example of whats right think this country is the greatest.Others have another opinion.
They let homosexuals serve in our military. The government has no problem allowing a group of people to DIE for this country, but letting them admit who they are while their putting their lives on the line, or letting them get married while doing the same thing, is just too far. This country makes me sick sometimes.
Mr savage is cool. On another note I´m from Denmark and we have extreme data on the welfare of children from homosexual parents and they do way better on all scores compared with the children of heterosexuals(as a father I´m working to change that of course). But at least it means people really should not worry about the children. And it shows it is only about love and care no matter the sex of the parents.
Re: the Spain reference ... he was saying that this Mexican state that has domestic partnerships has it because Mexico is looking towards Spain (their former colonizer) for leadership in these hotbed social issues. America has puritanical roots and that is why we will be last to have same-sex marriage, which America's religious just can't seem to accept. Mexico's background is Spanish Catholic .. I'm guessing that this type of background leads to more tolerance than America's.
There will never be a definition of marriage that everyone accepts. Lots of religions do not consider a couple married if they have not had a marriage ceremony according to their customs. A married couple who decides to convert to Orthodox Judaism may be required to live separately until their conversions are completed, and then marry in the Orthodox Judaism tradition. In many culture three or more people can be married. It's even in the bible.
@newguyout Oh and another thing, when we look back to America's reaction to the Emancipation Proclamation, it is crucial that we don't compare their reaction by today's standards. This is something you learn in Freshman Anthropology. It was a different culture then. So when Dan compares our culture to past American cultures and past foreign cultures he discredits himself. Regardless of how good of an observation it may be. I just don't like his "shame on us" attitude.
Whoa! Calm down! I was only offering a "possible" explanation for the reference to Spain. I didn't say I was right. Do you live in Mexico? I wasn't suggesting you look to Mommy spain when you have an issue .. but I would imagine that you have some commonalities with Spain .... language, religion, other .... Just like the US and the UK are often in agreement on many issues ... because of their commonalities.
I have to disagree with you here Dan, my late partner was flown to bayfront trama care unit in St Petersburg, FL I had no problem getting in to be with him nor did I have any problem with executing his living will, and was never asked to see a durable power of atturney or a health serogit witch I did have all they wanted was the living will this was june 2004
@roelvanacker But No one needs marriage to have a long term relationship, wether its monogamus or not ! No one is denying you a long term relationship, those who are against gay marriage only want to reserve marriage for those who want to have children . Not all married couples are able to have children, but they do believe that it takes a man and a woman to properly raise a child. We don't have that system perfected yet, but gay marriage would be another problem.
@valegorn All the "cool kids" in Europe have been doing it for about 20 years now. By the way, Canada, Argentina, and South Africa do it too. Nobody claims that it be allowed because of the cool kids. Last I checked, their argument was because it is the right thing to do. As for grandma and grandpa.... the big advantage about being in a later generation is that you generally tend to be smarter. Sorry, but thats the truth. They don't get a pass on being ignorant simply because they faught WWII
@newguyout Sure, and as I said before, all good points. Its pretty obvious that America isn't the land of firsts when it comes to civil rights. One side of me thinks this is sad while the other is glad America is a little more cautious before making crazy decisions. But like I also said before, regardless of his point, there is a big difference between pointing out America's flaws, and just talking shit about it. When you mix the two you usually weaken your argument, no matter how correct u r
2:00 "even religious people will concede that that woman should have been able to go her partner's bedside, and then you can say she would have if they had been married." Yes, it is incredibly sad that she was not able, the argument is just logically unsound. The fundamental problem is the definition of marriage "a covenant between a man and a woman for the whole of life ... and the procreation and education of offspring." Legal unions absolutely. But it can obviously not be called marriage.
After llistening to this I am reminded of how we all struggle thinking we can make our situations viable and can sue, be angry, etc without realizing all your joking, rationalizing is ludicrous because Gods law is all there is. He is not interested in Hillary Clinton or Dans cussing thinking he is cute, all that matters is what He says. We all stand before Him in the end, and God loves us all no matter what, but you will be judged for disobeying Him. Choose life!
Then you've just illustrated that the "principle" was never really that important. So there's no reason to deny gay people the right to marry. Sure it makes sense, for all the same reasons that elderly and infertile people have been getting married. For partnership, for legal benefits, for sharing a committed life together.
Dan is Seattle's gift to the world..God, I love that man! He has more integrity and intelligence in his little finger than a boatload of "Christians". (and he's hotter than a 2 dollar pistol at a bootlegger's convention!,)
Perhaps you were allowed that, but at the whim of the particular hospital. Dan's point, I believe, was that it should be guaranteed and unquestionable. I don't see that you have any disagreement with Dan at all, except to say that some people are treated better than others. This is obvious to most people. When we're talking about rights, we're talking about GUARANTEED rights. Inalienable rights.
I agree Dan, America can be so backward. Over in Holland they have gay marriage and now they are working towards 3 or more people in a marriage. They've already had a civil Union of a man and two women there. No need to stop at just two people, really is there? If you have a group of people that love each other why cant they all be married to each other?
@zenlife28 I am a woman and I want to marry my gf someday. I want to wear a wedding ring and introduce her as my wife. I live in Oregon so it's not about legal benefits. It's about showing she is not going anyplace and neither am I. It gives me such joy thinking about saying to people "This is my wife, Jennifer" and when the spouse dies people sympathize more. Society looks at you different whether people like to admit it or not.
THAT depends on the People, I have read Newspaper articles were adopted parents have beaten their kids to death. And there is no study that shows that Gay people are any better, with or without children, than straight people.
It's erroneous to equate marriage with procreation. We allow the elderly (who are past the age of being able to reproduce) to marry. We allow infertile people to marry. People don't have to choose to be parents to be married, plenty of straight people marry without any intention of having children. And of course, people have kids without marrying, which is perfectly legal. And gay people often do already have or adopt children.
@newguyout exactly, which proves my point, its hard to argue with someone who thinks their right no matter what. Also, the majority of politicians voted in the Civil Rights Act (hence majority rules), they got there with votes (from the majority). If the majority really didn't like it, they would've repealed it, or voted in different politicians that have a different view, (kinda like last November) The majority of todays politically and voters are against gay marriage, and its still the rule
"You can always count on Americans to do the right thing, after they've tried everything else."

i am so glad someone thinks this way
Dan Savage says it like it is.
Hey Dan. I watch your videos all the time. You're brilliant. and completely right. I just want to say thank you for representing the gay community so well :)
This is such an amazing video. How much did you rehearse/write down beforehand? It sounds like a fantastic speech, better than most that people prepare.
You are a wise man and I thank you for saying this. Bless you and your family.
Brilliant commentary with humor. Hard to beat.
Thank you Dan! You are a great voice for the Gay & Lesbian community.
i love him so much. he's the greatest resident in seattle :)
@JFrazer4303 This is the best description of the situation I've ever seen. Concise, poignant and well phrased. Bravo!
I love the Oreo imagery xD
WOW! I could not have put it any better myself..
Wow, that is exactly how I feel Dan!
Welcome to America, hope you enjoy our Calvinist roots!
Dan, what you said is so true. I thank you.

Dan Savage for President!

As a Filipino living in the Philippines, I approve the message

The Flordia court ended up ruling that the hospital had had no obligation to allow the dying woman to see her family. Nothing like the Justice System.
I love his metaphors.
But back to this clip, what a sharp dude! Funny but pinpoint accurate, I loved it. The American culture has created infinite positive memories for me in terms of music, film, fashion, etc; but politics and religious fanaticism are the opposing element. Shame on the US for being one of the last
@efh009 Iceland FTW! I've never been to your country, but it sounds like paradise, you should be proud. :)
I love you Dan!
You sir, have no idea what I have been a part of.
Dan Savage, Cosmic chess in full effect step into the 4th dimension. We'll be connecting to a new perception. Trust me, you will be glad we did.

We ended up getting a done much sooner than many of us expected

frigging amazing
I hope they refile the case as a class action suit against the state of Florida. Deplorable action by a hospital.
The quote is often attributed to Winston Churchill, but I've yet to find any definitive source.
this is so true.
And Helen Clarke, prime minister of New Zealand.

@SexyMelon Well said! part of it is religion, but mainly the problem is fear, and also there are those who just want someone to discriminate against.
@roelvanacker

its true how we americans pride ourselves in being ahead of our time when actually we're doing everything last. we're no pioneers.
@litia That was sarcasm, btw. Not sure if you're smart enough to realize that, so I thought I'd clarify.
And Dame Jenny Shipley Prime Minister of New Zealand !
Ahahah! This is awesome! And a little emabrasing for every flag-loving American
@deweys what do we have to be proud about?
Mr savage is cool.

@WildernessTree: Not natural TO YOU, Wildy. Opposite sex attractions aren't natural to me but I will support your right to have them. :)
RIGHT FUCKIN ON!

@EdM021
Yeah, just look at the shining example of South Africa! They repealed Apartheid decades before the US banned segregation!
how can you think someone is a pervert based off of nothing that you know of him
Funny how this man claims they're winning the argument, yet they couldn't even get Prop 8 passed in Cali. So much for winning....
