I'm too dizzy and busy watching his prancing and dancing to work out what argument he is advancing.
A good speech - the best - is one that can move and inspire similarly on paper, audio, and video.

i have personally attended TM clubs in india and the US. i tried, but just could not not continue in any of the clubs for more than few weeks. i felt there was no substance to them. PTo me public speaking is not an end in itself but a means to convey your message. But at toastmasters, public speaking is all about acting. In real world, it's about conversing with your audience and sharing thoughts and ideas which you believe in. There's no acting in inspiring real world speeches. powerful speeches are very often impromptu and carry a strong message which is borne out of conviction of the person speaking. Again, this toastmasters thing is drama and theatrics, not public speaking. so TM should do favour to all of us and change their tagline from 'where leaders are made' to 'where actors are made'.

Mayuresh, you make a lot of really good points. I have been in TM for 4 years and had similar thoughts sometimes. But you stated it quite well. I became president of a small club last year and we have a long way to go. Perhaps I will use this speech as a tool to get us to see if we are about style or substance. Best wishes!

To those who bash this speaker and this speech.
Personally I find this an excellent speech and maybe some don't like it which is fine because public speaking is quite a subjective topic. Maybe his style doesn't EXACTLY fit into the mould of conservative public speakers and so on which is also fine because he has his own style.
Please stop acting like you know so much about public speaking because you sound like fools when criticizing this speaker. At least he was good enough to inspire thousands who were there at the convention. Ask yourself before criticizing.
    CAN YOU DO THE SAME?

Greetings Matt, I knew he won, i was speaking in general to anybody that was planning on speaking. I recently judged my first speech contest. It was interesting to see the judging criteria. None of the categories "penalize" sounding like theater. This explains why so many Toastmasters are becoming closer to theater. As long as the rest of their speech is spot on, it doesnt matter how they "act". Then everyone emulates the champs. I'm trying hard to NOT be that way.

  • @sherwilliger

Was reading up on Toastmasters out of interest. If this is their ideal type of speaking, I’m out. Just watching this video got on my nerves and none of the good public speakers I’ve seen act like this while speaking.

Over all speech was good. I enjoyed the story. In the spirit of Toastmasters, i have to evaluate. I've been in Toastmasters for a couple years and I've done tons of research and watched hundreds of videos, one thing I'm starting to see a lot is that many of the speakers are very (what I call) "Toastmastery" in their delivery. Most of the speeches in the world championship seem very contrived and scripted. I know that they ARE, but they shouldnt feel that way. Work on being genuine, you'll win.

As an outsider, this presentation felt like my daughter's middle school plays. A good version of one, sure, but it's not the way adults actually speak with adults. It's like winning a championship for "five-a-side soccer" in a tournament with other teams that care about that same variant of soccer, but the rest of the world wants to watch the World Cup.

Good day, Mr. Ryan! I admire how confident you seem to be in every word you say. I loved how you managed to act and make-face and the way you transitioned your voice from low to high. It was perfect. It seems like you are genuinely excited to share your amusing story. All in all, your performance was entertaining, and you were able to convey it with conviction. I was motivated by your performance to improve my public speaking skills, and I'm hoping to watch more performances of yours! Great job, sir!

    (Well, he did win.)
I can see your point. As a fellow TM...though I have not advanced to this level...I know where you are coming from. I think that Ryan's message was genuine, but his style may have crossed the line into being too theatrical/contrived. Obviously, the various judges did not think so. Of course, every syllable and gesture was scripted, but I think one can be polished/scripted without it feeling contrived. Did this? Some may think so.

If Trust is a Must, then so is Theater a must in Storytelling. It's time people understood that the secret here is the masterful delivery of a well told story. Stories is what connects with an audience. Other speakers had stories the runner ups had stories. The next step is the delivery of that story. This is a competition, but also in real life speeches, use your body, stage, and 4th wall to your advantage. Mr. Avery you did all these things and more.

Good day sir Ryan , I really admire your performance . From the way you delivered your speech - the tone and pitch which you perfectly hit . Proper intonation were also carefully observerved along with body language and gestures as you act the words you've said. I liked the transitions you've made on expressions and voice as you shared realization from what you experienced , a story that has moral lesson. When the contest called your name you look excited to share your story and honestly , you nailed it and convey everything in the right way . Moreover, I was very much motivated , you are truly an example and inspiration to a student like me as well as to every speaker. You stood before the crowd full of confidence and power . Therefore, you've done a very great and wonderful performance . I hope that someday I can also practice and improve my speaking skills , and develop confidence in talking to public / people , like you. Once again congratulations.

    Hi Ryan
I' a layman with limited speaking experience or credentials.
Humor and presentation styles, are highly subjective.
Influenced by specific geographical , cultural, & national underpinnings.
There can never be a shared objective concencus on
    Being the best speaker!
The same applies to the variance in personal likes to art, food, music, etc.
In my humble the reason why you came up trumps..
Was due to your all embracing "MESSAGE"
