  • I've been wanting to try out some Neural DSP guitar amp sim plugins so in this video I tested four of them and compared them to my version of TH-U. Tested are SLO-100, Nolly, Abasi and Henson.

Couldn't agree more. I went looking for this subject to see if anyone encountered the same thing---the Neural DSP stuff, the Plugin Alliance amp sims, BIASFX, on and on. All of them have cool interfaces, and get my hopes up, but I just don't gel with what's offered as presets, and no amount of tweaking seems to get me what I'm after. TH-U on the other hand, I can very quickly get in the ballpark of what I'm after. HIGHLY underrated plugin. Or maybe people just aren't aware of TH-U.

I love THU, I have tried everything except for Softube Amp Room which I am eager to test. THU just blew every other amp sim I had tried out of the water. Many presets, many patches are crap, that is to be expected… one needs to find their sounds for their particular pickups etc but when you find it it’s amazing. Once I discovered Rig Player I stopped using the algorithm based patches. All Amp sims produce fizz and so does THU, I took my sounds to the next level but adding a multiband compressor in the mids and an ssl E EQ to cut the fizz followed by tape saturation.

Another one that I also think achieves well is the SPARK if you like the Marshall sound, that if at least I have problems with its noise gate, which is quite bad.

Wow, I'm hearing the opposite. I preferred the Neural sounds. To each their own though.
I tried and bought the Gojira, Soldano, and Parallax (bass) plugins, and have been loving them. Mainly using them for NWOAHM metal type stuff. But I just found out today that I have TH-u with Slate's All Access Pass, so I've been tweaking with it the past couple hours. The buzziness you mentioned that makes amp sims sound like software is actually kinda what I hear with TH-u (as well as the few other amp plugins I've tried). I might need to tweak with TH-u a bit more, but to me, the Neural stuff sounds and feels the most "real" so far.

I own the THU and I like a lot of it, but I like it better for treating guitar recorded through a tube amp after the fact. I can't quantify it, but there is beef missing with the VSTs. Maybe I'm just hearing or not hearing things. The sound isn't as broad or satsifying with a VST as it is with a mic'd amp. When I get a good amp sound, I am grinning, not so much with VSTs. I often feel like I'm in the ballpark, but I'm not feeling the jolt or the spark taking me over. Then again, I've been buying rigs, and just need to spend more time on them.

I think, after watching this, I'm not getting the same treble artifacting with my Neural DSP amps like you are...but, not being a wise guy here, I also don't play a single coil through them either. I also drop tune my guitars when using Neural. I get huge sound that is tight and articulate. Two guitars that I use with Neural are both 7 strings. One is the Ormsby Hype GTR and the other is PRS Mark Holcomb SVN with the Duncan Alpha Omega set. These guitars scream through the Neural DSP sims, I wont use another with them. I absolutely love the Neural DSP amps, especially Nolly and Gojira. They can be tweaked to sound full, and encompassing. Having said all that, I find myself going back to the TH-U sim more and more. And the deeper I dive into it, the better it becomes...so much so, that I don't even use my Fractal AX-8 anymore. TH-U is simply the best by far. I'm still saving for the Neural DSP Soldano, but it was great you shared your TH-U version. It's spot on with my strat. I wish you would run a workshop on some of the lead riffs you are playing.

Overloud is top notch i have said it for quite a few years but the only problem i have with big suites like this is that i wish they would have everything in trial until you decide to buy...for example get the whole suite with all the features but the moment you try an amp the trial starts for..that amp alone...giving you time to test and see if you like it and if you do pay and buy only that amp..or only that overdrive pedal....the asking price for all of them isnt much if you think about the totality of it but most people dont need all of them...essentially a vox,a plexi,a fender and a rectifier is enough for most people along with only certain pedals and effects....if people had the option to buy only the necessary amps they need and not the suites overloud bundles for them then it would be way more successful as a product cause sound wise is not inferior to anything....

Yeah, I tried the Neural plugins and they ALL suck noodles.

I can´t believe a man being that fooled by all the delays and shit in the THU models! The Neural sounds like the real thing, THU always sounds like every preset is done by a very boring producer who loves the 80`s.

@@alwaysandy_ So you can´t hear that the TH-U is cluttered with echo, delay, reverbs, overdrive, compressors, EQ`s, and other things. It´s like eating a bad hamburger that is covered with so much crap it doesn´t even taste like a burger.

Many presets in thu might be unusable but what matters is what sounds you can get with your own tweaking and creativity using the simulation. Thu is more realistic and is suitable for those who love vintage valve tones, bluesy and rich breakup guitar sound, and not just a plastic chuggy overly saturated high gain that neural produces

I don't know if people are just deaf or only trying to justify their purchases to themselves, but holy crap both of this plug-ins sound awful and as digital as it gets on this demo. Sorry not sorry.

@@alwaysandy_ I know the truth hurts and denial is the best defense mechanism on this cases. One day you’ll come back to this video and realize it’s the worst guitar plug-in demo on UA-cam, your tone sucks and you make both plug-ins sound like total crap.

@@GreatBurningNullifier hahaha this is great! (and it’s helping me in the algorithm!) I wonder, what makes you feel like you have to act like a total ass to strangers in public? Lots, lots of people disagree and simply move on. But not you!! You’ve gotta lift your gifted leg and spray some of your toxic shit around. Who broke you? Have you ever tried being nice or smiling? Too bad for you this actually helps me dumb ass!
