If a chain breaks you aint going anywhere, at least you were still mobile with a wonky shaft.

Isnt this the dude on the S10 forum that eventually found out he left the rear brake caliper arm bolts loose? Pretty sure it is and he is here talking crap on S10s.... 🤡

even an S10 needs to have the shaft drive maintained. Modern GSs are much better than the older ones. Much more reliable as well. Not as reliable as an S10 but still reliable as long as you perform the proper maintenance. But you do have to maintain them more

On the center stand the u joints have no load so they make noise. 2nd in gear clutch in back tire off the ground tire is going to turn, out of gear clutch in or out tire will spin ,. 3rd if you are convinced you have a driveline issue WTF are doing going 60 mph. 4th I have owned 3 S-10 , 2 2012 and now a 2016 with 70k on it. total miles over 200,000 just on S-10s and not one single problem of any kind ever. Normal service. Of the 9 BMW GS's and 10 GSA's only one never had an issue my 2007 GSA. 5 final drives failed over the years, many other issues and I had enough.
    So what was the issue???????

      So what was the problem?
I have 52,000km in the first 2 years of owning my Super T and no issues.
      Good luck

That S10 sure has a sweet exhaust note. Hope you get the rear end sorted soon and cheaply.

It's probably better to say that the BMW GS shaft splines need more regular and somewhat trickier maintenance compared to other shaft designs. The design admits tiny amounts of water into the rubber housing. Regular dismantlement and lubrication will ensure no development of (potentially catastrophic) rust. If a problem occurs with a totally sealed design (i.e. NOT a rubber housing) such as the S10, it's more than likely a manufacturing fault and thus just really bad luck.

Is that the first time you have had a bike on the centre stand and in gear with the engine running?

Definitely not the car tire causes this like most of the ignorants will say, that's one downside of the shaft drives as you can't see what's going on
With a chain you can just throw a quick look, on my Vstrom 650 i had 33 000kms and the chain and sprockets was still in pretty good shape ( i change the front at about 20 000 kms )
I thought Driveshaft were only a BWM issue, but i guess mecanic is still mecanic

At the time your shaft "broke" already has 20 bmw shafts been destroyed :-) Yamaha is quality. bmw is german over complicated engineering at its worst.
