  • Removed the shaft drive, a first for me. Easier than i thought. The clutch cover and wheel. Nothing stands out as being damaged. Bike rides fine. Noise went away on the ride back, but id like to figure out what it is

If it makes the noise when you let off the throttle and the engine is running at a point where the drivetrain is not under stress, It may be because of the lack of adequate lubrication on the spline. Or that the spline is contaminated with rust or debris. It looked bone dry when you pulled it from the housing. Without some lube, The Spline may have trouble self adjusting between gearshifting and letting on and off the throttle causing the noise in the drive train. I say this because you noted the sound is intermittent. The cheapest solution to try is lubricating the spline and cleaning the shaft. Reassemble and check for the noise. Keep in mind I don’t own this bike. I’m just applying heuristic troubleshooting.

Also, you noted that the bolts seemed to come off easy. Make sure that you torque them per manufacture specs upon reassembly. This could also be a problem easily fixed with a torque wrench. The shaft drive component needs to be in proper spec and one should always go over their machine and re-torque criticalFasteners for safety and proper operation Every few services or so.

I agree with this. Might also be inside the part the wheel attaches to (more splines).

@@XplorerSteveDIY also in agreement, coming from a small engine tech. Also would check the clutch basket, there should not be power to the rear when the clutch is fully applied. Additionally, check both gear boxes for proper lubrication.

IS the shaft of the bike sopposed to be lubricated? i saw a few photos and most looked dry. Im not sure. I did clean it and put it together with some grease. But unsure if it needs to be super greasy.

@@motardsquid A thin film of grease is sufficient, enough to protect from corrosion. Too much grease will just sling off causing other issues. The film is more about corrosion than friction.

Since you are troubleshooting, I would take apart the rear-end housing and check it. It was a very peculiar noise...If its not in the final drive , maybe its a crankshaft bearing? You seem to be very mechanically inclined, so i'm sure you will find the issue. I wish you luck and hope its an easy and inexpensive fix.

Hey the shaft on my late mod fjr calls for it to be bathed in oil until it runs out at the top thread on the insp port ( the S10 may be different check your manual) fyi it is a specilaty oil DON'T CHEAP OUT its expensive but so is a new shaft , also berings that are good dont turn easily their stiff, under load the cages could have play and bind, and the shaft with rust would make me think it occured from not enough oil added while the bike was verticle on a flat surface by the way the specialty shaft oil reeks! You will want to keep all youre used rags outside away from youre garage! You'll see what I mean good luck hope you figure it out look forward to seeing the S10 On the Rt250 Highland and Seneca rocks loop please post youre findings I hope for a simple positive out come .

There is one more bearing, for three total, on the rear wheel under the cush plate/gear @1:35 that plate pulls off there is a bearing on the wheel under it .

There's your problem @ 3:50 - The old style clutch basket. There's all sorts of threads out there on this. The springs are weak. Mine would vibrate between 2500 - 2800 rpm. They went to a new style in 2014. Replace it and you shouldn't have anymore problems with that. BTW, I hope you lubed those drive shaft splines while you had it out.

@@motardsquid I like my '12 ST a lot. We just got back from touring the Ozarks. We trailerd to western IL (hr south of St Louis), then did a 1950 mi loop through AR, MO and as far as OK on our bikes. My gal (she's on a F650 twin) would have rode all the way but, its boring riding between WV mtns and till you get to the Missipi river. Back in the day, I'd ride across the country. But my old bones can't handle it anymore. The ST is perfect all around bike, but like w/my numerous other adv bikes, can't seem to make the seat comfortable for all day riding, the other factor is windnoise. Inspite of Madstat mount, Streamline windscreen - its loud and I wear hearing protection. Been the bane of adv bike. Air hawk cushion and seat mod making seat flatter helps but anything more than 250 - 300 mi a day is a deal breaker because butt pain. Again, but for windnoise and horrible seat, I wouldn't hesitate to ride the ST across the country and back. Awesome bike and a bargain compared to others in it's class

I've been following along here, I thought the noise was from the loose brake arm on the rear wheel?

Open the engine oil filter then compress the paper in the vice to remove the oil that way you can see if theres debris

Glad i didnt have to do much. Turned out it was a loose bolt... and not in my head.

Dunno, youve covered most of the bases. The long travel suspension on that means it must have
a u-joint ..? It should not heal itself but what do I know.?...Cheers

that was my next thing is to look at the u joint, glad i didnt have to. But couldn't find many people that did this on this bike.
