@MR ANIME good luck in achieving that! I also have a similar goal which is to give my story manga/comic adaptation. If i do it 1 day you could try animating it.
@DA GAMING That's awesome to hear! I think I uploaded my first comic online around that age. Keep up the great work and don't give up! Your adult self will thank you later!!
I wish i could draw cause i have like hundreds if not thousands of pages worth of story, character arcs, character profile, power system, world building etc.
@@jq9690 damn thank you dude. I genuinely appreciate your kind words ❤️ and i hope the people would like my story.I’m actually in my last year of high school so idk if its too late to start learning how to draw but I’ll definitely try my hardest
@@_Osteoueso_ i mean hmm see i have like 4 different stories written(not properly ofc) the one i was referring to in this comment was my “shounen” type story which I don’t think would work in a novel. The other stories that i have written are very character focused so i can publish them as a novel probably i’ll think about it
@@jq9690 you are just the nicest and sweetest person i’ve ever met on the internet😂 i have like 4 more months tops for my school to end then a 2 month vacation before i start my uni so i’ll work super hard and try to get good at drawing in those 2 months and practice whatever i’ll learn from there in the future and hopefully people will like my story once im done and publish it
Months old. But very informative. My manga is sci-fi. The Mc is going through rifts in different realities to find the people who betrayed him. He faces an unknown challenges in the current realm. All leading to a showdown against a close person of his.
Thanks for taking the check this video out and sharing! Your story premise sounds really cool! Glad this video could help! Best of luck with your project!
This video was great. I learned a lot from it and other videos you made. Truly an underrated channel. Also your videos are helping me a lot in making my own story. I hope that it will get manga/comic adaptation 1 day.
Hey this is a good video! I just wanted to mention that the 10% of royalties is get AFTER you've sold enough books to cover the money the publisher paid you. I'm trying to explain. For example, if you get a contract of 10K € (which is what you get in France. If you get successful like Radiant by Tony Valente, you'll get more) and a manga is usually 7,60€, so your royalty is 75 cents (10% of 7,60€). So you have to sell 10K divided by 0,76 cents worth of books if that makes sense. The publisher needs to make the 10K€ they gave you back. You would have to sell 13157 books MINIMUM before you will be paid ANY royalties, which is a lot of books and many authors never get that many sales. You have to sell minimum 5K books so that the publisher will consider continuing the series, which is still a lot of books. If the sales for the next volumes aren't growing, 5k books sold might not be enough anymore, because the published wants to grow the sales of the FIRST volume of the series after each volume comes out. (A long topic, I won't explain everything here.) So consider your 10k to be your salary. If you can finish the 170-200 pages in 5 months, its 2K € per month after taxes, which in Europe, is a good salary. You'd have to work hella hard though in 5 months, so usually beginners finish their first few mangas in 10 months which means 1K €/ month which is a very, very bad pay. So it depends on you, how well you will manage. The most important skill as a mangaka is to adapt your work to the industry speed. If you can write and draw well but you can't keep up, it's over. Many mangas that are considered mediocre art or storywise by the readers, are still published because they can adapt. I'm not saying not to appreciate those works. I'm saying, that there's so many stories out there, that the speed in which you can put out content is extremely important to your success. Stories that you hate, others love, and people can't read everything. So you need to adapt to the speed in which you think you can manage with 10K€ pay, and you'll have to deliver fast so that your readers will stay interested and your publisher will not drop you. This is for traditional publishing. For the self publishing you can do what the hell you want haha. This is why I chose to self publish after talking with many editors in France for months, trying to figure our how to publish my work. I get this information from the publishers. I cannot deliver two and a half mangas per year to get 30K, so I cannot keep up. But it's fine! You can still be traditionally published but you'll just have to know this first. Also, publishers nowadays require a lot of marketing from you, the author, because they will choose who they'll advertise. There's a sad story about AN AMAZING french manga that got cancelled after 3th volume because the author didn't get enough marketing support which led to no sales. But that's another topic. I'll do another rant about self publishing some day, which I'm slowly working on every day, haha. *nervously laughing* Good luck to everyone, and a lot of love !
WOW Thank you so much for sharing all of that information Milli I really appreciate it! I actually had no clue about some of that stuff, so I learned a lot!!
@Millicomics I know I'm late, but as a fellow French (I guess you are) I want to know your alternative as a self-publisher (the platforms that you use). I also think in France we don't have much support from traditional publishers and the royalties are ridiculous which encourages me to do the work by myself even though it takes more time.
A video like this would’ve been helpful around 3 to 5 years ago. I will work on my series close to 10 years ago and I didn’t start drawing it close to 2017. I did try my hand and trying to pitch it took a couple of publishers who didn’t hear back from looking himself publishing. Currently, I just hired a copyeditor to proofread my work. After that, the plan on hiring someone to make a new logo, and then I need to contact someone on market price. All this is not calling the factor that I decided to start during a prequel volume to my series. Even though the first volume isn’t out yet.
Thank you for taking the time to share your story and experience! I really appreciate it! It sounds like your pushing through! Best of luck with your project!
Congrats on nearly 30K Monitor! Much deserved! I feel like you always make videos right when I need them because I’ve been wondering how to go about publishing the light novel I’ve been working on myself.
Good informative video. For me I would prefer self-publishing. I have seen some people be able to self-publish their comic books easily but those people have had decades in the comic book industry or an audience they builted up over the past few years. I am willing to spend the next few years building up an audience with my own work, and I know that it is going to take me a few years just to make one book. I am not good a drawing, I really do 3D animation and modeling (currently in school). I would love if my stories were made as animations but I am only one person and I would need an entire studio to make my ideas. So currently planing to make them as comics or manga, as long as I get to tell my stories I don't care if they are animated or a comic books. Just need to work on my drawing skills before I can start making my first book and start building an audience as soon as possible.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! I really appreciate it! I too prefer self-publishing to be honest. If I wasn't currently signed with a company, I definitely would've been preaching self publishing a lot more. I just happened to be in the right place right time though when I got picked up. Super glad to hear about your project though! 3D animation is sick! Best of luck with your comic!
@@seris1 Put simply no. If you sign all of your work or watermark it then you should have no issues. Even without that, if you have the original files and WIP's, you can always prove you are the owner if you have to file a DMCA Takedown Notice If you really wanted to, you could even apply for a Copyright to your series after you have a decent amount of content made
I can definitely use the 6 sentence elevator pitch for Saturday AM's next Summer of Manga on a potential new one-shot mecha manga. I think you may have already brought it up, but I don't think me saying this would be too redundant: self-publishing is pretty much building up your own resume from the ground up, and there's no one out there to promote your work except for you. So with that in mind, your art should pretty much be consistently good in order to grow your own fanbase and give yourself more exposure(the same is applied to your work and release schedule).
Very good points! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about self publishing! You are absolutely correct! And YES please do use this formula! My publisher mentioned this formula in a live stream one random day. I had previously been rejected from Summer of Manga twice by this point. I gave the formula a try and my one shot ended up getting published haha I think a lot of people overthink the pitch, so having a publisher lay out the template really helped me, so now I'm happy to share it all with you!
Thank you! That story is my published Saturday AM series, Change The World. It publishes bimonthly. The first chapter is available for free on their new platform! You can find it on the website!
Have an appointment tomm to hear a publishers offer for my series. Been on my own for the past 2 years give or take and have been doing ok, some more exposure would be great but I'm scared that this deal won't be in my best interest. Going to keep an open and ear and mind, but I'm doing my research on this topic! Great video!
yo is my idea good the name of the power is "the portal" inside the portal is an endless wasteland , and if someone's hand is inside the portal and the user suddenly disable the portal that *guy's* hand will brr , and he can make his body a portal his basically untouchable
@@maven9323 yeah that’s a similar power to what I’ve thought of except it’s a void of nothingness, he can send small “portals” that are like the size of hairs and it cuts people without them being able to resist. And yeah he can also place his body inside the void like Obito from Naruto so he can just fade through attacks. I reckon a cool name for this ability is “Nihility”. Long story short, your idea is awesome
My "elevator pitch formula" would take not just 6 sentences but 6 paragraphs, at least 😅 The "end" of my MC is kinda metaphysical, I really don't know how I would have to explain it in a very short way and how to make it sound positive, haha.
I personally wish I enjoyed art. Ik I can get good at it but I just dont enjoy doing it even tho i love manga and it's probably the best (feasible) way of showing my story off. Im lucky I have family members who are good and & enjoy doing art. This video will probably help me once we start getting ready to release stuff.
It'll take place on Planet Earth, year 2134. Our main character will be a Turtuffsim, a human look a like alien, named Manny. He's on planet Earth to find the legendary Magical Pearl. He had a special gadget that would've help him track it down, but it broke. This caused him to find it manually in an unknown planet. He will need to make allies with the people around to help him get closer to finding the Magical Pearl... does he get it or not?
Hello there!!! I just wanna say I love your videos so much-we all really need them!!! You always have exactly the right content at the right time, not to mention it’s very high-quality and easy to understand!!! I’ve been putting together ideas for a huge manga project. I have interesting characters, a very developed plot and several arcs, a good art style-so basically all the fundamentals to make a pretty decent manga. However, I’m not sure whether I should release it myself or go to a publisher. I will be drawing the manga in the traditional manga style, but I’m not sure where to post it. Will webtoons be fine for that?? I haven’t seen a lot of manga-style webtoons on there. I’m just totally unsure how to market my work…what do you recommend?? I’m still new to your videos, so I’ll be watching each of them!!! So in conclusion, what’s the best strategies for self marketing, where should I post my traditional-style manga, and how can I get the best outcome of the promotions and marketing???
Thank you for taking the time to write all of that I really appreciate it! To answer your question, I feel like the first thing I should talk about is the importance of a social media presence. You should 100% be on Instagram, Twitter, tiktok, youtube, etc. You don't have to commit to ALL of them, but focusing on a few is HUGE Sadly, in today's day and age, you have to sell yourself before you sell your works. Nobody really cared about my stuff until I started doing this UA-cam thing. Now that I'm published, I can see the clear difference between me and my fellow artists. While some of the artists published alongside of me are WAY better than I am, I've had the most opportunities to work with brands and other companies because of this social media influence. As far as posting your traditional style manga, Webtoon and Tapas are good for that. I always tell people not to assume you're going to become famous by just uploading to webtoons, that's unrealistic. Every platform is oversaturated and the only people making money are people who already have a social media influence. I would say for now just post to webtoon and tapas and promote the hell out of it. You can always send it off to publishers. From my own experience, publishers like to see stuff you are working on because it shows them you can put the work in. Some publishers value creator owned content which means they might just publish the story you're already making. Other publishers might like to read it and then ask you to make something exclusively with them As far as promotion and marketing, that's what social media is for. Whenever I post a new video, I promote it on facebook, amino, reddit, insta, twitter, etc The louder you shout the more people you might reach. Just being consistent is the biggest thing though It isn't easy. It takes a lot of patience. Shares and comments are the factors that help you grow the most. Like I said before, it sucks that you have to sell your personality first but that's just how the industry works right now. Once people like you they will be more willing to give your work a chance. Hope that helps! Best of luck!
ok imma throw this out there (and yes this is gonna be one hell of a long ass essay but idc) I'm currently working a series called AllOut100, its about an alien boy, Allout, who is overpowered but underappreciated, thats the basic summary but this story's theme for every character in it is ACCEPTANCE!!! and in all forms too. Its both a shounen type action packed and emotional rollercoaster of a comic book series I'm creating and I hope someday I cna get it published
Non topic request: I am writing a film noir style detective series, not really manga style, actually a lot closer to typical action comic art style, but in black and white. I have watched acouple of things related to the film noir setting, but I would like to hear what you can tell me about a film noir style comic. Do you think you can make a video about film noir style comics? It would really help a lot.
I'm not that good of a drawer and I wouldn't mind people who have experience pitch in their ideas, though I doubt all of them would be added (since i'm very picky with how I want things to go). It be cool to have my drawing redone by someone who's really good. Just like One punch mans author, he isn't that good yet has someone who redos his work and publishes it.
I still want to be an independent author, so I choose to self-publish my own works. I need to learn about entrepreneurship to become entrepreneur-author.
Thanks for taking the time to check this video out and leaving a comment! The answer is yes and no. YES in the sense that you can draw your manga traditionally. There are plenty of artists who do that No in the sense that in this day and age, it is expected for your comics and manga to be digitally lettered, unless your hand lettering is good Marvel and DC still have artists who do hand lettering, but many artists choose to add the text in with their computer. Any drawing or photo editing software can get the job done If you choose to draw your pages traditionally and add the lettering in digitally, you will need to scan your pages. Hope that makes sense! Best of luck!
I've been wanting to make a story sice i was 7 and I've developed and edited that 1 story for 5 years also characters and made 2 others that i spend years working so this was cool
i imagine to make a manga called "Saitamy" a fan made version of Saitama, i just tell his feats: lifted heaven with a finger without even trying can solo reality, fiction and meme verse gone so fast he broke the non-reality (a reality already broke) he gone so fast the multiverse considered him omnipresent snd then he gone so fast that he was at negative speed and came back to normal death is scared of him he got 3 limits: Limitless, he could just break things in multiverse and he was only at immesaurable speed and everything Hellvean, limits that can let you make things at Hell and Heaven, and he had max Inaccessible everything OutReality, limits to like break reality and non-reality etc., his max is NCOCON (No Concept Of Concept Or Number) his scale is NCOS (No Concept Of Scale) and there are ALOT of more characters like Skeki (known as the experiment 3.4.4.9.) HerobrineRe/Duke Wealson (first character that i ever invented, btw Re in italian means King, and at first i thinked it to have a black crown and Herobrine of minecraft because he had white eyes, hes god of combat and parkour) JinxTheMagician (a cat that knows how to make potions) Joyoshi (someone who uses cards as weapon, quiet kid) and alot of more experiments and characters, the worst experiment was the 2nd, i even dreamed about it before i invented it, it was a sign
I'm glad this video could be helpful! As far as your question goes, the answer is no From what I've heard, showrunners like Butch Hartman (The Fairly Oddparents, Danny Phantom) worked in the animation industry and pitched his series ideas at board meetings For anime, unless you are in Japan, the chances of your manga being adapted into an anime are incredibly low. The only time I've seen non Japanese manga artists have their art adapted is with Tony Valente, the French Mangaka of "Radiant" Even then, Tony Valente worked through a Japanese company and worked in both France and Japan. There ARE anime-style studios in the west. Netflix is a perfect example of a studio that is beginning to adapt the anime art style with series like Castlevania From my understanding, animation companies will reach out to publishers if they are interested in adapting their work. The publisher then has to agree to the terms of the deal which could include revoking all rights to the property For an individual creator working without a Publisher, those odds are even lower. I personally haven't heard of any indie manga artists who have had their work adapted by an anime studio For that reason, i always tell people interested in making comics and manga to worry about making comics and manga If you're so worried about an anime then go to school for animation and learn to animate it yourself. That's my take on it though. As a published manga artist, I believe it's not worth my time to worry about anime Hopefully that helps! Best of luck!
They are advertised as a diverse manga publisher, but if you look at some of their series, some are comic inspired, some are japanese inspired, some have that graphic novel look, etc. It's a pretty broad term
@@MonitorComics Awesome, thanks for the reply! I've looked into it a little but I thought it'd be good to ask someone who's actually working with them haha. I've got an idea that's more graphic novel/comic style, but I really like the idea of it being published and serialized like manga instead of just solo graphic novels. Thanks for the info!
I'm currently working on a series I've been planning for 4 years I just never had the courage to execute cuz I didn't trust my skills back then. I just started making this manga this year. It's called Mights of the Unknown The story takes place in 2047 where humanity's population dropped down to 40% due to the disaster that happened in 2018. A meteor struck the earth awakening all of the creatures from stories and myths, the meteorite nor the creatures weren't the reason why humanity started to fall. The humans themselves are the reason. The meteor sent out a burst of energy all over the earth giving every human abilities, they gained magic. While people were successful in controlling their new abilities others had accidents where they endanger the people around them, others choose to use their power for evil which resulted to losing many lives. The main character of this story is Emmit, a school dropout who spends his life being a pain in the ass while also dealing with schizophrenia as he sees a pitch black person always follows him anywhere. One night Emmit dreams of a second catastrophe that's about to occur within a few months. As emmit wakes up from his nightmare the shadow speaks to him "you don't have much time" The skies suddenly shines and trumpets could be heard from all over the globe. Judgement day is coming And so emmit goes on a journey to seek the gods and hope they might have the answer for the world's salvation. That's pretty much how I can sum it up I'm making a one-shot manga right now too
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! When I am drawing, i like to flip my canvas horizontally to quickly spot mistakes. For this page, it may have been easier for me to draw the character from the flipped angle (some artists have an easier time drawing characters facing the left or right)
Actually yeah! I seen channels who post completely silent manga panels and comics with some music and get pretty good views. You just gotta know how to market them. :)
I'm planning to make a comic, but I'm not sure which style I should go for. Webcomics seem simpler to panel and make since they are in a line, but also I don't think you can convert a webcomic into a traditional format for printing and revenue right? Do webcomics have a chance of keeping up in terms of profit with comics and manga which can be distributed online as well as traditionally?
Thank you for the great question! From what I've been told by other artists, making the comic in the traditional format first and THEN converting it into webtoon vertical format is much easier. If you start with a vertical scroll format it's much harder to prepare it for print It has been done before though and webtoons like Solo Leveling were released for print. I think webcomics can keep up with traditional comics and manga, but it's much harder With print format comics and manga you can always work with publishers and magazines to help promote your work. With webcomics, you have to pretty much start from nothing and build your fanbase Both are kind of similar in the sense that you need to be using social media to grow your audience! For ease of life, I'd recommend making your comic in the traditional format first and then taking the panels and making it work for webtoons! Hope that helps!
@@MonitorComics thanks! That was an incredibly helpful answer! I have one more follow up question. I've read that manga is read by a much larger population than traditional comics, even rivaling comics in western populations. I know manga goes right to left due to how the flow of written Japanese works, so it doesn't make much sense to do right to left if you write in English. But is it worth going right to left in order to appeal to what most manga/comic readers are used to? Also would the paneling direction and whether it's marketed as "English manga" vs "comics" have any influence on whether japanese animation companies might be interested in adaptations?
@@HuebertEllowit-LOL For your first question, if you plan to work with a publisher at some point you have to make your work read in your language's reading style. In my case I am in the US and speak English so my manga reads from left to right. If i made mine read from right to left no publisher would consider it You can be influenced by the manga art style and panelling though! As far as Japanese companies adapting it, I wouldn't even worry about that Most Japanese companies only adapt japanese works. Western companies like Netflix and others have adapted anime style content though. I just tell people not to worry about it because its a far off dream, focus on your comic or manga first!
when self publishing could i upload my work to amazon, webtoon and tapas theoretically? or would webtoon/tapas for example not allow a publish on multiple sites?
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! I personally haven't tried to do this with Webtoons or Tapastic so I am only assuming but i think theoretically you COULD upload your work to all 3 if you really wanted to Uploading to Amazon means you plan to sell your work though either as an e book or print on demand. If that's the case, it wouldnt really make sense to upload to webtoons or tapas where it could be read for free Hopefully that helps!
That's awesome to hear! Each company has its pros and cons! Try to research each and see if one stands out a little bit more. Usually, the ones i apply to are ones I am already a fan of so it feels like a no brainer. Hope that helps!
Hey! thanks for the video, I really loved it. so if you're just starting out, is it best to just start publishing on webtoons until you build an audience?? I'm still working on my art but I would like to at least start submitting some work, but don't know where to start. I would appreciate any feedback, Thanks a lot!
Thanks for taking the time to watch! Unfortunately, just posting a comic online isn't enough to build an audience these days, unless you are SUPER SUPER GOOD ya know. You definitely CAN get a few fans that way, but with sites like Webtoons, Tapas, MangaPlus Creators, etc there are millions of other people doing the exact same thing. Social media is HUGE in every art field, so I'd recommend using stuff like instagram, twitter, tiktok, youtube, twitch, etc to promote yourself and your work One of the quickest ways to build an audience is to grow on social media. It's a grind, but it's super important!
Unfortunately I am plagued with creativity and by that I mean my mind is constantly thinking of new ideas, like stories. I have up to about ten different stories now and I am struggling to focus on just one. My newest one is called Pritong Pansit, and it's about a guy called the Teriyaki God who can manipulate the molecular structure of teriyaki sauce and create it with the right ingredients, like a water-bender but with that instead. Silly idea, I know, but I got it as an idea after listening to a song with the same name by Joji. I have this thing now where whenever I listen to music, I have to make a reference to the song I'm listening to, similar to how Hirohiko Araki made references to music with his characters.
I have a video that addresses this called "How To Stick With One Story Idea," hopefully it will be able to help a bit! I am also someone who has a lot of ideas, and that is GREAT. But to be blunt, publishers want to see that you actually get things done and dont have a bunch of incomplete projects It's a tough balance, but if you go the self publishing route there is more freedom to explore all of your ideas!
I personally don't know too much about the light novel industry as I am not a light novel author, so i would recommend finding a channel or article from someone in the industry! They will have a lot better information than I could ever have
I'm going to university next year and there are 2 courses that could help me develop my drawings for my manga. Digital design and Graphic design. I picked digital but not sure if it was the right choice. Both give the study of illustration and animation but I'm just not sure. I still have time to change it.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! I am currently a Graphic Design major in my Senior year at my university. Graphic Design is more focused on logos, social media graphics, print flyers, vectors, and things like that. There is SOME animation mixed in, like motion graphics and GIFS, but from my experience, it's not really drawing-based. I personally don't know what Digital design is so I cant offer much advice. It sounds like Web Design but not sure haha. If you want to improve your drawings I'd recommend fine art classes. ANY art course can help you with making manga though. My photography courses taught me a LOT about framing, camera angles, lighting, and stuff like that. English courses are also great for improving your writing! Hope that helps! best of luck in college!
So, can I publish my manga in Saturday like I would usually do in weebtoon? I want publish my first manga soon and I'm looking for the best way to publish it.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! The answer is no. Webtoon is a free hosting site where anyone can upload their comics and manga, it's not considered "being published." Saturday AM is a publisher with 4 magazine branches and over 100 issues. We also have physical books being sold worldwide in book stores like Barnes and Noble. To join Saturday AM, you have to do well in one of their annual competitions (March Art Madness for art or Summer of Manga for One Shots) Hopefully that helps! Best of luck with your manga!
@@vainqueurhero8823 To my knowledge the only two websites that people really know about is Webtoons and Tapas. There are some smaller platforms online like VoyceMe or PulseManga, but I'm personally not that big of a fan of them. They might be worth looking into though!
I know this is a very specific question, but I wanted to ask if you can make a video about how to make a good tournament arc. I want to do a manga and one of my arc idea is a tournament arc. I know the cause of my tournament, but I need to know how to make an interesting one.
I want to make a comic or manga about my life, with the friends I’ve met along the way, like a scifi story and I just don’t know how I’ll publish it like yes I have seen this full video but it can’t be that easy can’t it? Like after all of the editing and just doing it by myself, there’s gotta be like another obstacle right? Anyways, I don’t want to get sued or have my stuff stolen what do I do
Your story idea sounds awesome! Publishing isn't easy. You may get rejected a million times before getting lucky. That's just the business. Self publishing is more straightforward but a lot more work on your end As far as getting sued, you don't have to worry about that unless you blatantly plagiarized something. No idea is 100 percent original As far as getting your stuff stolen, once you are published yo
Shonen Jump had a contest that was worldwide so they can accept works from other countries but from memory, you have to submit through either Medibang or Viz (I can't recall which on the top of my head) so it can be translated. So yes it is possible, the process is just different. Especially if you don't speak Japanese.
I started to create a story like a few years ago and I'm still working on it, the thing is I always had a problem understanding how to publish a Manga. I literally despise webtoon and I don't want to do anything with it
I have several videos on this topic. The short answer is yes. However there will always be gatekeepers online who say things like "Manga can only be made in Japan" I recommend watching some of my other videos where I talk about it more in detail
That's awesome to hear! The short answer is yes, but take that with a grain of salt. ANYONE can self publish. All you need to do is upload your files to a print on demand site like Amazon and you're good. The company will print books whenever someone buys one As far as working with a traditional publisher, it becomes a lot harder. A few magazines I have worked with in the past had an age limit of 18 for applications. Every magazine is different though so you would have to do some research individually Hopefully that helps! Best of luck!
Yes and no. I've seen some artists do it, but at the end of the day it's up to you to grow your own audience. Even then, you need to convince them that it is WORTH IT for them to pay when there are millions of free comics, manga, and webtoons available online
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! I don't have experience in that field, but I assumed it would be difficult. Publishers have a hard enough time getting their books onto bookshelves I currently work with Saturday AM, a publisher that's been around for 10 years with artists like Whytmanga, and they JUST RECENTLY got their books into bookstores like barnes and nobles, walmart, comic shops, etc Even then, they were only approved for 10 series in the book deal for this year. If they do well, other series may get a similar book deal Because of that, I imagine it's hard for a self publishing artist with no connections or reputation to get their books into bookstores Local comic book shops may be a different story, but like I said I am not 100% sure about the logistics Hope that helps!
You can definitely self-publish on free websites like Webtoons, Tapastic or anywhere else! Social media sites like Instagram and Twitter are also popular spots to post your work If you are talking about being published by a company, most likely not. Most companies have an age limit of like 18 or 21 for legal reasons. Some companies also don't just publish individual chapters, they'll host short story competitions and offer portfolio review sessions Hopefully that helps! Don't give up, you still have plenty of time to practice and improve before then! Best of luck!

(A long topic, I won't explain everything here.)
So consider your 10k to be your salary.
*nervously laughing*
Good luck to everyone, and a lot of love !
WOW Thank you so much for sharing all of that information Milli I really appreciate it! I actually had no clue about some of that stuff, so I learned a lot!!
Wtf I'm very surprised that this comment is underrated it needs to be on the top!
This was very insightful. Thank you.
And another piece of valuable info for us creatives wanting to break into this ever changing industry.

Nice job, Monitor! This video was super informative! Now, I can take into account whether self publishing or publishing is right for me!
Super glad to hear that Azariah! Best of luck and thank you for all of your continued support!
@@MonitorComics if you where to self publish wouldn't people be able to steal it and say it's there and take all the credit
@@seris1 Put simply no. If you sign all of your work or watermark it then you should have no issues. Even without that, if you have the original files and WIP's, you can always prove you are the owner if you have to file a DMCA Takedown Notice
If you really wanted to, you could even apply for a Copyright to your series after you have a decent amount of content made

I gave the formula a try and my one shot ended up getting published haha
I think a lot of people overthink the pitch, so having a publisher lay out the template really helped me, so now I'm happy to share it all with you!

My "elevator pitch formula" would take not just 6 sentences but 6 paragraphs, at least 😅 The "end" of my MC is kinda metaphysical, I really don't know how I would have to explain it in a very short way and how to make it sound positive, haha.

You don't have to commit to ALL of them, but focusing on a few is HUGE
Sadly, in today's day and age, you have to sell yourself before you sell your works.
Other publishers might like to read it and then ask you to make something exclusively with them
As far as promotion and marketing, that's what social media is for. Whenever I post a new video, I promote it on facebook, amino, reddit, insta, twitter, etc The louder you shout the more people you might reach. Just being consistent is the biggest thing though
It isn't easy. It takes a lot of patience. Shares and comments are the factors that help you grow the most. Like I said before, it sucks that you have to sell your personality first but that's just how the industry works right now. Once people like you they will be more willing to give your work a chance. Hope that helps! Best of luck!
Most youtubers don't add timestamps for their sponsors. I didn't skip out of respect.
I appreciate that! I always like to give my viewers the option haha
ok imma throw this out there (and yes this is gonna be one hell of a long ass essay but idc)
I'm currently working a series called AllOut100, its about an alien boy, Allout, who is overpowered but underappreciated, thats the basic summary but this story's theme for every character in it is ACCEPTANCE!!! and in all forms too. Good video! i have a question: is there some way i can publish manga made with traditional art?
Thanks for taking the time to check this video out and leaving a comment! The answer is yes and no. YES in the sense that you can draw your manga traditionally. There are plenty of artists who do that
No in the sense that in this day and age, it is expected for your comics and manga to be digitally lettered, unless your hand lettering is good
Marvel and DC still have artists who do hand lettering, but many artists choose to add the text in with their computer. Any drawing or photo editing software can get the job done
If you choose to draw your pages traditionally and add the lettering in digitally, you will need to scan your pages.
Hope that makes sense! Best of luck!

Limitless, he could just break things in multiverse and he was only at immesaurable speed and everything
Hellvean, limits that can let you make things at Hell and Heaven, and he had max Inaccessible everything
OutReality, limits to like break reality and non-reality etc., his max is NCOCON (No Concept Of Concept Or Number)

thanks this helps a lot. I have a question, is the process the same for turning your manga into an anime?
I'm glad this video could be helpful! As far as your question goes, the answer is no
From what I've heard, showrunners like Butch Hartman (The Fairly Oddparents, Danny Phantom) worked in the animation industry and pitched his series ideas at board meetings
For anime, unless you are in Japan, the chances of your manga being adapted into an anime are incredibly low. The only time I've seen non Japanese manga artists have their art adapted is with Tony Valente, the French Mangaka of "Radiant"
Even then, Tony Valente worked through a Japanese company and worked in both France and Japan.
There ARE anime-style studios in the west. Netflix is a perfect example of a studio that is beginning to adapt the anime art style with series like Castlevania
From my understanding, animation companies will reach out to publishers if they are interested in adapting their work. The publisher then has to agree to the terms of the deal which could include revoking all rights to the property
For an individual creator working without a Publisher, those odds are even lower. I personally haven't heard of any indie manga artists who have had their work adapted by an anime studio
For that reason, i always tell people interested in making comics and manga to worry about making comics and manga
If you're so worried about an anime then go to school for animation and learn to animate it yourself.
That's my take on it though. As a published manga artist, I believe it's not worth my time to worry about anime
Hopefully that helps! Best of luck!
@@MonitorComics this definitely helps thanks a ton. I guess my first step is to pitch my idea to a company and go from there 💯👊
Is Saturday AM just a manga Publisher, or do they also do comic or graphic novel type things? Just curious.

@@MonitorComics thank you so much!! I watched it and it helped me out! Can't wait to write some villains😈
I'm currently working on a series I've been planning for 4 years I just never had the courage to execute cuz I didn't trust my skills back then.
I just started making this manga this year. It's called
Mights of the Unknown
The story takes place in 2047 where humanity's population dropped down to 40% due to the disaster that happened in 2018.
As emmit wakes up from his nightmare the shadow speaks to him "you don't have much time"
The skies suddenly shines and trumpets could be heard from all over the globe. Judgement day is coming
And so emmit goes on a journey to seek the gods and hope they might have the answer for the world's salvation.
That's pretty much how I can sum it up
I'm making a one-shot manga right now too
Sounds awesome! Thanks for taking the time to share! Best of luck!
@@MonitorComics I still don't trust my art but I'll see how this goes
Could you make a video on making manga/comic covers
Yes! That is on my list of upcoming topics! Thank you for taking the time to leave a suggestion!
I see on the manga, you’re dialogue bubbles are turned around. Is it the same for everything else? Thanks in advance 😊👍👍
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! When I am drawing, i like to flip my canvas horizontally to quickly spot mistakes. For this page, it may have been easier for me to draw the character from the flipped angle (some artists have an easier time drawing characters facing the left or right)
Can i put my own comic on youtube without voice over and got monetize?
If you start with a vertical scroll format it's much harder to prepare it for print
It has been done before though and webtoons like Solo Leveling were released for print. I think webcomics can keep up with traditional comics and manga, but it's much harder
With print format comics and manga you can always work with publishers and magazines to help promote your work. With webcomics, you have to pretty much start from nothing and build your fanbase
Both are kind of similar in the sense that you need to be using social media to grow your audience!
If i made mine read from right to left no publisher would consider it
You can be influenced by the manga art style and panelling though! As far as Japanese companies adapting it, I wouldn't even worry about that
Most Japanese companies only adapt japanese works.
I personally haven't tried to do this with Webtoons or Tapastic so I am only assuming but i think theoretically you COULD upload your work to all 3 if you really wanted to
Uploading to Amazon means you plan to sell your work though either as an e book or print on demand. If that's the case, it wouldnt really make sense to upload to webtoons or tapas where it could be read for free
Hopefully that helps!
I have comic/manga story that I wish to publish but I don't know which company is better to publish my story to..
That's awesome to hear! Each company has its pros and cons! Try to research each and see if one stands out a little bit more. Usually, the ones i apply to are ones I am already a fan of so it feels like a no brainer. Hope that helps!
@@MonitorComics Thanks but what about image comic?..should I try this company?..what do you suggest?
Hey! thanks for the video, I really loved it. so if you're just starting out, is it best to just start publishing on webtoons until you build an audience?? I'm still working on my art but I would like to at least start submitting some work, but don't know where to start. I would appreciate any feedback,
Thanks a lot!
Social media is HUGE in every art field, so I'd recommend using stuff like instagram, twitter, tiktok, youtube, twitch, etc to promote yourself and your work
One of the quickest ways to build an audience is to grow on social media. It's a grind, but it's super important!
@@MonitorComics thanks i appreciate the straight forwardness, i can image there are thousands of artists out their but i understand. Thank you
@@marcos.a8814 Yeah of course! Don't feel overwhelmed, at the end of day it should be fun for you!
But to be blunt, publishers want to see that you actually get things done and dont have a bunch of incomplete projects
It's a tough balance, but if you go the self publishing route there is more freedom to explore all of your ideas!
Can you make a video on patent I really need some help on those
If you could, could you please do this but for light novels?
I personally don't know too much about the light novel industry as I am not a light novel author, so i would recommend finding a channel or article from someone in the industry! They will have a lot better information than I could ever have
I am working on my own isekai manga
That's awesome! Best of luck!!
@@MonitorComics Thx. They said that I can take some additional stuff with little things but I'll stick with digital. Have a great day
So, can I publish my manga in Saturday like I would usually do in weebtoon? I want publish my first manga soon and I'm looking for the best way to publish it.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! The answer is no. Webtoon is a free hosting site where anyone can upload their comics and manga, it's not considered "being published."
Saturday AM is a publisher with 4 magazine branches and over 100 issues. We also have physical books being sold worldwide in book stores like Barnes and Noble. To join Saturday AM, you have to do well in one of their annual competitions (March Art Madness for art or Summer of Manga for One Shots)
Hopefully that helps! Best of luck with your manga!
@@MonitorComics Thanks. That makes sense
Can you recommend me 4 popular websites like weebtoon where I can upload my manga?
@@vainqueurhero8823 To my knowledge the only two websites that people really know about is Webtoons and Tapas. There are some smaller platforms online like VoyceMe or PulseManga, but I'm personally not that big of a fan of them. They might be worth looking into though!
@@MonitorComics Thanks again.
is it possible for copies of your manga to be translated into japanese, get it selling in japan so that it can be adapted into an anime?
I know this is a very specific question, but I wanted to ask if you can make a video about how to make a good tournament arc. I want to do a manga and one of my arc idea is a tournament arc. I know the cause of my tournament, but I need to know how to make an interesting one.
Thank you for the video suggestion! That video is on my list for upcoming topics! I will cover it soon!
hey what app do u use in the video?
Clip Studio Paint!
You said most publishers have an age limit? Why so? Or did you mean minimum age of entry??
I want to make a comic or manga about my life, with the friends I’ve met along the way, like a scifi story and I just don’t know how I’ll publish it like yes I have seen this full video but it can’t be that easy can’t it? Like after all of the editing and just doing it by myself, there’s gotta be like another obstacle right? Anyways, I don’t want to get sued or have my stuff stolen what do I do
Your story idea sounds awesome! Publishing isn't easy. You may get rejected a million times before getting lucky. That's just the business. Self publishing is more straightforward but a lot more work on your end
As far as getting sued, you don't have to worry about that unless you blatantly plagiarized something. No idea is 100 percent original
As far as getting your stuff stolen, once you are published yo
Is Al dis possible online sind i don’t like live in Amerika or Japan ?
Is shueisha only for people in japan or can I contact them if im American for publishing?
Shonen Jump had a contest that was worldwide so they can accept works from other countries but from memory, you have to submit through either Medibang or Viz (I can't recall which on the top of my head) so it can be translated. So yes it is possible, the process is just different. Especially if you don't speak Japanese.
@@forgettableotaku Ohh thank youu!
@@Cloud_9400 No problem :)
@@forgettableotaku Very true! I'm not 100% up to date on Shueisha's process but I think you are correct!
I started to create a story like a few years ago and I'm still working on it, the thing is I always had a problem understanding how to publish a Manga. I literally despise webtoon and I don't want to do anything with it
I personally don't like webtoons (or any vertical scroll comic website). MangaPlus Creators looks like the best option right now!
@@MonitorComics oh my God thank you so much, I'll try to that website 🙏
@@medical-sama2090 Good luck!
Can I become a mangaka if I'm not from Japan??
I have several videos on this topic. The short answer is yes. However there will always be gatekeepers online who say things like "Manga can only be made in Japan" I recommend watching some of my other videos where I talk about it more in detail
Can u publish a manga if you are 15 cause I'm doing a manga that i want to publish
That's awesome to hear! The short answer is yes, but take that with a grain of salt. ANYONE can self publish. All you need to do is upload your files to a print on demand site like Amazon and you're good. The company will print books whenever someone buys one
As far as working with a traditional publisher, it becomes a lot harder. A few magazines I have worked with in the past had an age limit of 18 for applications. Every magazine is different though so you would have to do some research individually
Hopefully that helps! Best of luck!
Im 14, manga maker in making I want more tips that require less money! 😊
posting to free sites like MangaPlus Creators is probably the best option!
@@MonitorComics woah! Cool! Is that app available on mobile?
Can someone self publish the initial chapter and use it to get support and publishing assistance for later issues?
Is uploading your story to patreon a viable strategy?
Yes and no. I've seen some artists do it, but at the end of the day it's up to you to grow your own audience. Even then, you need to convince them that it is WORTH IT for them to pay when there are millions of free comics, manga, and webtoons available online
But if you really wanted to you could still get your books in bookstores even if you self published?
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! I don't have experience in that field, but I assumed it would be difficult. Publishers have a hard enough time getting their books onto bookshelves
I currently work with Saturday AM, a publisher that's been around for 10 years with artists like Whytmanga, and they JUST RECENTLY got their books into bookstores like barnes and nobles, walmart, comic shops, etc
Even then, they were only approved for 10 series in the book deal for this year. If they do well, other series may get a similar book deal
Because of that, I imagine it's hard for a self publishing artist with no connections or reputation to get their books into bookstores
Local comic book shops may be a different story, but like I said I am not 100% sure about the logistics
Hope that helps!
OK, what if my comic is european comic, not manga?
You could go either route. Posting on social media or comic platforms is also still an option
Can a 13 year old publish a manga?
Because i really wanna publish mine
Only chapter 1 though
You can definitely self-publish on free websites like Webtoons, Tapastic or anywhere else! Social media sites like Instagram and Twitter are also popular spots to post your work
If you are talking about being published by a company, most likely not. Most companies have an age limit of like 18 or 21 for legal reasons. Some companies also don't just publish individual chapters, they'll host short story competitions and offer portfolio review sessions
Hopefully that helps! Don't give up, you still have plenty of time to practice and improve before then! Best of luck!
@@MonitorComics Thanks for the reply
This might help in the future
You can be rich and famous or be self-published
You can still be rich and famous with self-publishing if you have a big enough fanbase and social media presence!
I'm sorry, but could you please continue to do art during these videos.
Using these as mini Manga lessons.
LOL YES Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! I've had mixed reviews about how much of my drawing to show during these videos.
I livestream on this channel pretty often though, the replays are available in a playlist called Livestream Vods. I draw and color in real time during those and take questions from the chat
It might be helpful to skim through some of those to ones where I am working on manga pages. I always announce when I am going to go live over on my Instagram account!
