    This is the first part of a big interview with writer and publisher Robert Kirkman. In this segment, we discuss his early work self-publishing comics like Battle Pope with artist Tony Moore and the risks and challenges that brings. We transition into some of his early work pitching to Image comics including Walking Dead and Invincible.

    I met Kirkman at a small comic show in Lexington, KY right when The Walking Dead comic was getting mainstream attention. When I bought one trade of Invincible that he signed, he asked if I read Walking Dead. When I said no, he signed the first two trades, handed to me and said “Now you do.” Really cool guy.

      I met him at a signing at Mile High Comics. They had mostly forgotten to promote the event and only 50 or so people showed up. He signed just about everything people had brought (he signed 50 of my comics). The lady in front of me was buying trades for her nephew who had called her from Kansas. Kirkman asked if she had his number and he called the kid and talked to him while he drew a sketch in the front of each of his trades.

    In a recent interview with Jim Valentino, he gives his side of the Walking Dead pitch and he does say that a zombie comic has never sold. He says that if Kirkman had mentioned at the beginning that it was a story of a dad and his son set in a zombie, that he would have approved the book.
    Glad it all worked out in the end.

    • @JR-ju3kj
      @JR-ju3kj 2 роки тому

      If Kirkman did do a Night Of The Living Dead comic,I have to disagree with Jim Valentino that Robert Kirkman couldn't own the comic just because the property is in the public domain. That's like saying that Marvel can't own Thor,Hercules and Dracula because they're in the public domain and that Disney can't own their own specific versions of public domain characters(which they can and they do -but it's just their own specific versions of the characters). I'm going to be doing comics using public domain characters(quite a bit of them,actually-Thor and Heracles/Hercules,included but I'm going to bring something very different and unique to my specific version of the characters).
      I would read a new Night Of The Living Dead comic just like I would read a new Robin Hood or King Arthur comic,so long as it's good and does something coo,different and unique with the mythos.

    Invincible is so good, I was really quite sad when I read the last issue knowing there'd be no more (not that I object though, it's good to finish things before they run out their welcome...)

    • @nickbotic
      @nickbotic 3 роки тому +4

      Kirkman definitely seems like he understands the concept of a book not overstaying its welcome more so than arguably anybody else in the industry. Walking Dead was still so massively popular when it ended, but he didn't let that popularity dictate the ending. One thing I appreciate more than anything in any piece of media is the creator letting the story dictate where it goes. If it gets to a point where you're trying to think of more stuff to do just to keep it going, it becomes detrimental to the entire project. Kirkman definitely has a good grasp on that. Such an awesome dude.

    • @JR-ju3kj
      @JR-ju3kj 2 роки тому +1

      In comics,stories can and often do go on forever.
      But that doesn't always have to be case.
      It can be a good thing to know when it's time to move on in life and not to overstay your welcome-I've seen that happen a LOT in comic books. Not everyone wants to do a 300 issue run for over 25 years(not that there's anything wrong with that and it's worked great for some people like Todd McFarlane with Spawn but even he acknowledged that not everybody wants to do that or needs to do that).
      I want to write my own independent comic books but I personally have no interest at all in EVER doing a monthly on-going series,let alone one that stretches on for for decades. My goal is to do one-shots and mini-series(and hopefully,if I become successful enough with the comics,then start my own business as an entrepreneur like how Todd McFarlane did it).
