Word of advice from an editor who works at a publishing house: YOU DO NOT NEED AN AGENT. (Particularly in this case, but also in general.) An agent's job is to find creators and sell their work to publishers. They can be good if you have no contacts in the publishing industry. But if you already have an in, or your book is already published, all an agent will do is take 15% of your royalties forever. But what about editing? Agents are NOT professional editors. While they do sometimes perform editing, it's usually to make a work more approachable for a publisher prior to submission. If you want an editor who will genuinely improve your writing, then hire a professional editor. But what if dealing with the publisher is scary, and you want to make sure you get a fair contract from them? Then talk to a contract lawyer! It's a misconception that agents have any legal training whatsoever, so if you need someone to look over your contract and ensure that it is not 1. giving away your IP, 2. going to lock you into producing sequels, or 3. overall parasitic and bad for your interests (which big publishing contracts often are, because their goal is to make money, not promote you) then please talk to a lawyer before signing. To conclude, an agent is not necessarily a bad route, particularly if you have no experience with the publishing world at all. They can be a good friend and guide, and they can shop your book around to publishers for you (though don't expect them to make the best possible deal - they'll usually take the quickest and easiest). My advice would be to talk to an agent casually to learn the ropes of the publishing world, but you don't need one to sell your book for you. In the case of "Unfamiliar", Haley's online following already did what an agent would have done. In most other cases, unless you already have some success and following, agents won't touch your work because it will be too unique and unknown. They may even want you to change it so it's easier to sell. The rule of the traditional publishing world, including agents, is "make money first". For all of you aspiring authors and artists, there is an alternate path in either indie publishing or self publishing. If you would like to know more about those options, I'd recommend checking out Journey Press's blog: The Path to Publishing. journeypress.com/2020/10/12/the-path-to-publishing-part-one/ Journey Press is an independent, queer press who are known for giving out advice and supporting small creators. If you have more questions, you may find the answer there.
tl;dr: If you've already got momentum, an agent is just feeding off of it. If you don't have momentum, an agent won't be interested. Good job for making it on your own, and keep it up! :)
thank you!!! for me it was a mix of being consistent and also trying to make sure I was posting in lots of places; being visible is the most important thing at the start I think, you gotta make sure people have as many opportunities to learn about your art and story as possible.
Considering your audience skews young and tends to encompass that “extremely ambitious creative drive, no clue about logistics” energy (said with affection and adoration) this is a great video to make
As a fellow creative from Idaho who's dreamed her whole life of being traditionally published and as a child had a one-sided rivalry with Christopher Paolini, this video is very gratifying. Congrats on reaching the dream!!
I won’t lie, I CRIED when I received my volume 1 copy of Unfamiliar.. I’ve looked up to you as an artist for so long and your art has helped me through so many things! And of course, I won’t stop supporting you any time soon :)
The warm coloring of that picture and the music in the background is just making my autism and anxiety so calm and happy. Right now it's starting to give me nostalgia of my great grandma's house. I can't go there for now she passed away. I have the copy of your book but it's not mine. It's a libraries. I have to return it probably soon but I Will try and get the actual book for myself and try and convince my parents to get the pre-order😊😊😊
I'm so happy to see Unfamiliar fully published!!! LavenderTowne was the first professional artist I stumbled across, and she's the reason I started considering art as a career 💚
I really love your artstyle and how it's so unique. Im really excited about the Unfamiliar series, It's all just so beautifully written and displayed✨✨✨
Volume 1 of Unfamiliar was incredible, I read it like 7 times after I got it, lol. Keep up the great work, LavenderTowne! (If you ever feel burnt out or unmotivated, take a break! Take your time. I added this because I think it would be important to your feelings!)
I've been thinking of writing books for a while now, so it's really cool that you're sharing some unknown bits about how the process works. By the way: Congratulations on the book release! Hope your success is long-lasting.
ok I know I'm like a month late and you probably won't see this but... I'm just so overjoyed to have been a part of unfamiliar by watching your videos and reading it for all this time and I have such a good memory of freaking out and being so happy when I heard it was getting published and then like when it came in the mail aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa *sobbing face* you will always be such an inspiration to me and I'm so grateful that I stumbled across your stories all those years ago (:
As someone who loved reading through every single little bit of the comic that I possible could've, both online and in the physical release, I'm so happy for you and wish you the best of luck on your next project!! (I will be getting book two as soon as I possibly can!)
This made me tear up. I’m so happy for you! I can’t wait for volume two and your future comic! Also I have a question; Did you see Hades Town on Broadway or somewhere else?
Thank you for sharing your journey! I appreciate all the information, and also the reminders that these were just the way things worked for you and not some template for general usage. I never could've imagine the connection between pre-orders and the amount of books the place would keep stocked, which was my favorite takeaway from this video.
I have an ongoing story on kindle vella called "Lila Evie - House of the Butterflies" for about two months now (still publish new ch/episodes) and yeah, it can be really hard + tough of getting a book and story noticed as well as getting it out there :'(

I'm proud to see your journey, I've watched your old comic q & a video multiple to fire me up to get my own comic done! Can't wait to see more from you 💕
I remember seeing Paolini by hapistance going to hastings to rent a movie, just the dorkiest teen imaginable standing at a table by himself, nobody else was there for his book signing. I was justa kid so I had him sign a pamphlet, I told him I want his signature so I can say I met him when he was famous. Honestly I was just trying to be supportive but damn he blew up
I'm Aussie, but I visited Orlando recently and I was SO ecstatic to see your comic at Barnes & Nobles that I bought it immediately. I hope that volume 2 is there next time I go!
I absolutely loved unfamiliar vol 1 and I was so excited to hear that another one is getting released soon!! I have 2 questions 1: how many unfamiliar volumes will there be? (If you know) and question 2: do you think there will be a year long gap in between every volume?
I've been following Unfamiliar since page 4 or 5 in Tapas and I feel very happy for you beeing able to publish it!! I've always wanted to publish a comic too so I understand the feeling you descrive in the video (maybe one day I'll get the time to actually draw it hahaha).
Congrats on your book journey! I have had doing comics on my bucket list for so long now. I love webcomics so seeing your work and how far you've come was so inspiring
i lovee the style of this video!! the animatic part in the beginning and this long timelapse of a detailed piece and of course the valuable info! thanks for sharing 💜🌟
I just bought both the books, and they just arrived like a hour ago. I read like the first 10 pages and I already really like it I cant wait to finish it :)
Im so happy for you!! I watched your videos ever since I was younger and you inspired me so much in my art journey and im happy you got your dream come true!!
Thanks so much for all the help Haley! I really want to get published someday and this really gets me motivated. recently I went to visit my family in Ireland and I went to the bookstore in town and there it was: Unfamiliar! It’s amazing to me that, as you said, it’s in so, so many places because i’ve been a fan of unfamiliar for a while :) thank you again for the inspiration and help!!
i wish i could pre order vol 2! i’ve been trying to convince my mom to get me the first vol since it was announced XD we might be going to barnes and nobles later to see if it’s there!

Lavender, I know you probably won't see this but, I just have to say, I love you girl. ( as a friend) As a little 10 year old girl I see so many similarities like I want to publish a book and am also a lefty! You are honestly my biggest inspiration in life. I have the first copy of Unfamiliar and I pre ordered the second one. I know you might not see this, but yeah. I love you, I look up to you and I aspire to be like you (especially the colourful hair :D ) thanks for reading ❤❤❤
