I like how Belew will dance around to anything, even while solving the differential equations needed to play his √4931/π time signature or whatever it is.
hahaha....hilarious but true! To me this is one of the most creative compositions of KC -or any modern band, for that matter- in a very, very long time. Simply cannot put any tags on it. What is it? prog, jazz, artrock, experimental, hard to tell even using those concepts.
At the third night at the Park West in 2008 I had a good view of him and he broke out into a huge, almost cartoonish smile during this song when it almost came unglued. Something went awry and he did a weird loop to get back in time with the rest of the band and had a big goofy smile while he did it.
This song alone shows how good Trey Gunn is. Apparently when Tony Levin returned to KC and played this song he found it to be one of the most difficult bass lines.
Levin and the band play this song on the Aug 7, 2008 - Chicago - Park West live album and imo he hadn't quite gotten it down cleanly... which is astonishing for a player of his calibre.
The fact alone that Belew is able to sing while playing in all these odd time signatures simply blows my mind. Love this piece. Title track, FraKctured and LTiA part IV are my favs from this album.
@@jirikrajnak9047 I know both of these are old comments but I remember he wrote liner notes for one of the King Crimson Collector's Club live albums, and he mentioned having back pain from holding that thing. So yeah the stand thing makes sense
This version is fantastic, with the hybrid drums and Trey Gunn's smoothest playthrough of the coolest bassline ever written for stick-like instruments. Fripp and Belew sound great and impeccably practiced, as well.
That haunting intro and the instrumental jam section in the first half of the song is as good as anything i have ever heard from a band. I love how the guitar work of Fripp and Belew sound so locked in unison together as one that sometimes you almost forget that there are two guys playing, Gunn's bassline is so groovy but so rock solid and Mastelotto's drumming as well as his use of electronic drum pads really helps to beef up the music. This King Crimson lineup sound so fresh and tight as a four piece unit. Brilliant live performance
You may like KC or not, but one has to understand that what they play is probably the most advanced form of music as of today. They play in impossible time signatures, with some passages that makes other music sound like picking flowers. I have seen them last year and with them being now a sevenpiece, what they produce can only be described as a musical onslaught.
I've been a big fan of King Crimson for 20+ years, but calling theirs the "most advanced form of music" is very much unneeded. It's just music, and music is the best.
their approach to music, however, does separate them from other approaches to music that do not involve the levels of , sorry for this term, "discipline" and agility of playing and organizing musical structures that are the stuff dreams are made of. not to say this is qualitatively different to other forms of music, it's just that the individuals involved in the evolution in crimson have achieved an approach to their craft that may be simply unrecognizable in today's music climate. and also it makes me extremely happy in both my head and heart simultaneously and after all, music is completely subjective. long life to all creative forms that reach beyond the mundane, ordinary and homogenous!!
Adrian belew voice changed a lot here since the 80s But honestly imo it got better and fits perfectly with most of the topics of the songs of the 2000 KC
Whatever this music is considered- “advanced, complex or whatever“ is irrelevant. The fact is: it is perhaps the most UNIQUE ever created in the history of earth. The style could be considered similar to minimalist composers such as Steve Reich from the 1960s. But this is a much different approach obviously. And in 100 years as we look back at the history of electric guitarists from the first hundred years of the instrument’s creation, hopefully Robert Fripp will be seen as something of a maverick of importance. All the incarnations of KC have been interesting. Take your pick.
Agree about the Reich comparison - the guitarwork starting in the 80s lineup is definitely reminiscent of Reich's style of minimalism + interlocking polyrhythms. Check out his composition "2x5" - could be a prog rock song haha
Actually, one of the issues mentioned by Fripp about ConstruKction is that they didn't have the chance to test the album's material live before recording in the studio, which is what they typically do.
