    I'm splitting a box with a friend, so I'll have a whole hive of new bugs to work on in 2 weeks.
    I'd love to see Byron take the two forces in the box (or parts thereof) and go two different directions with them. One in a very beginner friendly style, and the other at a higher level hobbyist approach. But I understand that is a lot of production to ask, so I'd say the former is more useful to new blood than the latter.

    From a beginner perspective point of view (I just finished painting my first five models ever), here's what I think would be great for this:
    1. Your army of choice and what are your main reason you selected that army
    2. Which models you want to have first, ignoring what is in the Combat Patrol box and then evaluating if the CP box still makes sense for you and why
    3. Finding your color scheme, how to choose, what to keep in mind (color synergy)
    4. Which models to paint first and why, which second, etc. and which painting style to apply (simple slap chop, slap chop 2.0 or "traditional" base color and highlighting)
    5. When to paint your (first) centerpiece model or model you want to spend extra time on. What will be the difference in your painting style compared to your other troops
    6. What will be your next steps to build up your army in size. Thought process.

      I'd strongly suggest talking about priming a model with a brush. It's how I started, I think it's how a lot of people start, purely because it's part of the first tools we pick up. Rattlecans and airbrushes and whatever else? That all happens after the first few models where someone's just trying things out. Also, minimal paint jobs that can be built on later. For example, I semi-recently got out some models I was playing with like... twenty years ago. And I was not a good painter twenty years ago. But because I was just doing a very basic scheme with base coats, my models looked okayish for tabletop play, and if I want to experiment with techniques that are a bit more involved I now have the opportunity to go back in and add a little touch up here and there, which is a wonderful accidental gift for my younger self to give my older self.

    I've been Warhammer-ing for a few years, but with this new edition, I really want to see someone start and take the journey from Combat patrol to 2K. Like, fly on the wall, you choose your army, you buy the CP box, you build it and paint it, you play it, then you decide how to expand.

    Most of the time tutorials start from a basic primed mini (I understand why) but I bet there is value in an "escalation league" for painting. Iterating over the same minis adding quality in each pass.
    Stage 1) Get your new Leviathan box minis table-top ready - Batch painting, tips for a neat basecoat, minimum tournament legal, etc.
    Stage 2) Take the same army and push them up a notch, you're already done but maybe you want to step up to the next level and add more advanced techniques.
    Stage 3) Higher quality still, reserve for characters?

      I tend to agree, for me the biggest barrier was everything you see is painted very well but with no history as a painter and no skills just a solid basic game ready army method would be great. Ideally no layering, highlighting, etc. But a focus on decent looking, quick and easy so you can play.

    A couple of points I hope will be useful to newcomers of the hobby 😊
    - Don't compare your painting to anyone else! Everyone is at different stages in the hobby and everyone has their own painting style, a bit like handwriting. It makes models and the hobby more unique. There is no right, wrong, good or bad ways to paint your models so just enjoy it.
    - Painting your models can take time. If you get burn out, don't beat yourself up and feel bad about it because you aren't painting every chance you get. If it takes weeks between painting sessions, then so what. If I go through a slump then I split my models up to smaller bits e.g I'll paint all the guns today, or the heads, or I'll paint this one colour on 10 models so when I've completed this one task, I've still made progress and feel good about it. This helps me to get back in to the swing of painting when in a slump.
    - Pick the army that you think looks the best and the hobby will snowball from there for you. Read their lore to see how they sit with you, check out the model range for the army and take it from there.
    - You can do as much or as little as you want with the hobby. If you want to just paint, that's cool. If you want to run the meta army and win tournaments, that's cool too. You don't need to do or know everything about the hobby - Take it at your pace.

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for the input buddy - what'd 'highish' compare to? I could absolutely push it to 'Best Army' potential in terms of Tournament Level, and would enjoy it, but would that make it less useful?
      Of course I would be discussing approach a lot, rather than technique, which is the same for everything :)

      @@ArtisOpus I started by painting each model individually and always struggled to work my pile of shame down. I recently tried to paint my army in squads of 5-10 models. But I still don’t feel like i distribute my time efficiently in terms of making the main line units look good, while focusing on the main characters. I would love to get better at spending my time more efficiently at painting key areas to make especially main line troops look good and then have more time on the bigger models (The lion or azrael for instant, as I paint dark angels).

    Byron - absolute pleasure speaking with you at UKGE Friday morning. As we talked about, I'd be hugely interested in seeing your painting technique applied to some of the Leviathan minis, and the armour of a marine. As with many, I enjoy the painting process but spend a lot of time on single minis, never achieving a painted army. I always enjoy hearing of the thought process of experienced painters to achieve that goal - what compromises to make whilst remaining happy with the outcome. Good luck with the venture into 40k!

    Wow! Great topic and what a way to give back Byron!!!!! Been in this since the early 90’s with pewter models and green bases lol. Enjoyed this hobby with my children which are all grown. I have a few recommendations if you are new….
    1. Decide what is most important to you if you can, what brings you joy… Painting, building, playing, or reading and if your not sure go to step 2!
    2. If you are a newbie, Buy one box(squad) or better a getting started box! Two small armies and some rules Build it and paint it. Who cares how it turns out but now you know some do’s and don’ts.
    3. Now the hard part is easier…pick an army or and/or a combat patrol box and your off to the races!
    Lastly, and probably the most important. Every community as negative people….run from them to the positive ones! There is a boat load of kind, helpful, and giving people in this hobby. Find them and stick to them like glue!!
    Today I mostly just build and paint. And it bring me joy and peace of mind. There is NO WRONG WAY to do this!! Enjoy! I am interested to see how this goes for you Byron and I will be watching. Cheers!

Start with a combat patrol box, play a combat patrol game, move onto a 500pt list and then step by step evolve your army to a 2000pt list. Would love to see how you tackle the process instead of starting with a huge pile of plastic and adding a couple little units.

    For a week I couldn't figure out how I could help. Then I thought the best I can do is give you the example of what i am currently struggling with, I don't know if it will help, but I'll give it a go. I am working on the Idoneth deepkin vanguard box. (I have a few Vanguard and combat patrol boxes, as I worry one day I will want to play but not have an army to try, but all I have done since the pandemic is half army paint jobs. I've never played and never completed painting a box).
    So far, for this box, I was cutting out all the minis, gluing everything and cleaning up mold lines. I was never sure if I was doing it right, or if i spent too much time on this step. Now after they are all built, my next problem is choosing a paint scheme. I want something unique, that is not like the box art. And now I'm stuck with decision paralysis with my army infantry in different colors.
    Once I overcome this stage, I also don't know if I'll never finish the rest of the models in the box and just end up moving on to a new one?
    So I guess, Im saying is, I am willing to see you go through the process, from choice, to sprue, to glue, to paint, to confident painting, to completion, to playing, and how you figure it all out.

    If you are doing a "starting" series it would make sense to cover it as a basic level first, followed up with taking it to the next level. Finished with whatever is the general or centre piece model taken to the highest level you can.
    I would also suggest taking the whole process from the beginning, again showing basic and then advanced methods. For example, starting with basic assembly then followed up with more advantages like maybe filling or even re-posing. Cover undercoating too - how to get good results, from "brush brush" to rattle can to air brush.
    Regarding your army selection make sure you pick it yourself so you like it, don't let others pick it as a gimmick. Pick based on lore and models then let us know why you picked it and it will be more interesting to you and us.

    I think a beginner friendly approach for the new core box is the most benefit to most people.
    But you could also go with doing 1 of the forces beginner friendly and the other a tad more advanced. Or as you said, paint them beginner friendly and then show how you'd go about with taking the paint job from beginner to intermediate and beyond.
    What I'd love to see is either of the new forces but with some non'normal paint scheme. So not White/Red for nids or blue for the Space marines. Or maybe even just paints that isn't used much at all.
    Oh, and i'm much more interested in watching the nids being painted then sm's.
    But if we're not sticking to the core box, go with a Harlequin force! (Sorry)

    we have a zillion guides on how to do known colour schemes
    so few people touch on how to make your army into your army
    naturally this would include choosing their name, colours, lore overview, detailed lore later, what units to customise to better tell your story , what paint techniques to tell your story
    what basing options to go for so it dosent break your colour scheme from across the table ... etc
    you 'could' involve the community to help you make choices... like what is this captains name or whatever... but at the end of the day i want to see your dreams manifest

    This video fits exactly into my recent process of returning to 40k after 25yrs. Researched armies etc, chose World Eaters but main issue is stock atm plus not entirely happy with how the minis look despite trying various painting techniques. Whilst waiting for more World Eaters stock & also improving on my painting, I've decided to do a Space Marines army as my eldest son is doing a Tyranids army. He bought a starter set a few months ago but his gf took Necrons so he had them sitting spare as he didn't want to do Marines. So i thought they'd be perfect to use as 'test pieces' to find the perfect method to paint the army.
    So for me, i think the process of how you choose your army, different methods & style of painting (battle & parade ready, slapchop, dry brush, airbrush etc) plus how different primers will show varying results to finished models.
    Hope this helps. Just looking forward to getting started as well as my 1st few test pieces of my salamander army look great. Your video on it was brilliant & one of the reasons i chose that chapter plus the lava base video to go along side it (my next test piece method combined)
    Also keep up the great work all round. Content is spot on!!!

    And for the army you chose, I would want you to go through the process of choosing the color scheme and touching on a bit of why that one, connecting to the lore.
    I think the level of paint should be mid-tier table top. With a higher level on characters and leaders.

    Excellent and super timely topic..I have been going through this very process and am curious to watch you experience it. The 2 places I am most challenged are: 1- selecting model options and unit composition for my tyranids that work well and are based around the cost effective starting boxes (combat and boarding patrol) 2- finding a paint scheme and technique that accents the savagery of these terrifying models but also can be executed quickly. Not lying when I say I have recently selected to use dry brush technique after being inspired by your videos. Thanks again. I am looking forward to more videos.

Find a faction you like the sound of then look at some of their art work and models and then see what inspires you. And I would agree with what a lot of people are saying in the comments, Byron, you should pick your own army to paint, perhaps with the above process. I think it depends on what you want.
    With 10th edition coming so soon, I think one of the strongest video series you could do is a no nonsense guide that is meant to be followed to the letter for new players. "You want your models to look like this and you've never touched a brush before? follow this guide." This would result in the most NEW subscribers and viewers because people are going to be looking up guides.
    On the complete opposite end you can do a "Making your Leviathan box at a higher standard" series that really slows down the process and focuses on ways of improving on the traditional slap chop method. I'm curious about brush maintenance and usage. Do you have separate brushes for oils and water based paints? The cleaning process without ruining the brush. I have a sonic cleaner for my eye glasses, its it worth it to get one and do all the brushes at the same time?

      We've got a great video on it on the channel, if you have high-quality ones you'd be surprised how long they last.
      My biggest tip is around brush-size, you want to use the biggest ones you can, volume: resilience, and the step up in size each time is pretty huge.

    So Im not a new player, but I am a returning player after a 10+ year hiatus so alot has changed since I last played. My big question is regarding flexibility on equipment choices, with the new edition on the horizon and a completely unknown meta as it were for what is good or not, and also since GW seems to have moved into single kits that can be built into multiple different kind of units over the years, what would be your choices for multiple loadouts? Magnets? Blue-tac? Super glue and hoping you can get in and break it off in case you change your mind?

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  Рік тому

      This is a very common question, and I honestly think that your best bet is to accept future fomo to a small degree and just build what looks the coolest. Most opponents won't care what your guys have Vs your list. I genuinely think this entire thing holds back the hobby and game a lot.
      This is said from the perspective of someone who has won tournaments and played at the ETC for team England, too. I don't think GW understand how limiting WSIWYG is. Or what it fuels (not starting armies).

    My main concern is what army to pick. I have zero 40K knowledge so would just pick one I'd want to paint. But if I was buying solely to win at games then how do I decide what ones good? I know Tau (Tao?) Are meant to suck but I do like the appearance of them.

    • @Himle_
      @Himle_ Рік тому +2

      Tau or T'au I believe.
      For myself, I've always bought/painted what I like even if they're not the best. Also, I'd reccon what's "best" now, might not be what's best when 10th edition launches.

    • @AsteroidWrangler
      @AsteroidWrangler Рік тому +2

      What is "best" really does change like water, so liking the appearance and the narrative fluff is your best guide.
      Now, if you really wanted to insist on finding something "strong" you can look at tournament results once they start coming in, and take inspiration from them. Competitive 40k is a community dedicated to finding ruthless optimization. But that doesn't mean it will be enjoyable for you to play, and by the time you get everything in your list built and primed, the meta will probably have already shifted away.

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  Рік тому +1

      I think the current GW environment of constant huge change puts you in a slightly better spot here, as James mentioned, not that it's a good thing IMO :).
      Go for what's cool, if you end up with a couple of sub-optimal unit choices on your shelf or in your cabinet looking pretty that's still a nice thing!

    You mentioned in a past video that matte paints don't work well for the drybrush technique. Could you explain why? Pro Acryl paints are very matte so I assume they dont work as well. I also have Vallejo and Army Painter paints, do those work well? Thank you for your help! I plan to tackle the Nids in this box using the technique and my Series D set!

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  Рік тому +1

      I've recorded an entire video on me working out a custom scheme for nids :). It's still in edit as it took 4 attempts!
      Absolutely man: matte paints encourage 'clumping' and 'chalking', you can absolutely work around it, it's just a little harder work than working with satin ones, it's why I tend to work from a chaos black base, even if I hand-basecoat over it after.
      They're fine (and almost impossible to avoid) toward the end of drybrushing, as most paints you highlight with contain more white, and are more matte and chalky anyway.

    My biggest issue is speed, it always takes an age to get a squad done, so progress is incredibly slow and it gets demotivating.
    There's lots of guides on "how to paint a space marine fast" or any other model but suprisingly few on how to paint a whole unit quickly and consistently to a good standard, particularly when mixes etc. are involved.

    Been in it since game was invented in late 80's. Reasonable painter now BUT struggle with nailing a simple colour recipe and sticking to it. Too many "perfectionist" tutorials on the web however well intended. Think the psychology of getting reasonable armies on the table is key. Need to promote simple hacks. I think reduced washes (Lamian or similar medium), use of transfers, (enhance models far beyond my skills), limited colour palette all help. I have found when I go back to basics I'm better. Basic colour scheme, basic techniques, a few good tools etc
