I’ve actually binge watched this channel on my weekend off to the point where I’m literally sleeping, eating and watching this channel. I fell asleep watching, I woke up watching…. This is what I was missing!
Sooo, not a great deal going on in your life then, eh Jay? 😁😉❤
@@davids736 😂 I’m living the dream here! Been looking forward to not a great deal going on in my life for months! 😂❤️
@@jaysee7283 I hear that buddy.
Same here friend ! lol seriously
So how long did you have “Juuuuustin Hawkins Ridessss Againn…….Againnn” stuck in your head for?
Hi Justin, off topic BUT I have a weird question/story for you.
I have a really hazy memory of a scenario that happened while I was on holiday with family years ago. As a 10 to 13-year-old in one of the sunny go-to areas that the British and Irish usually invade yearly for a splash of sun. I want to say this was around 2000-2003 in a popular vacation spot in Spain or maybe Portugal, I cannot remember exactly. On one of the warm nights we visited a karaoke bar. After our amateur hour of crap songs and worse singing, a group entered the bar and I remember looking in awe:
Two similar looking men with long slightly frilly brown hair wearing colourful shirts, another with a tank top showing arms and black hair that covered a bit of his face and a tall man with a hulk Hogan moustache and sunglasses at night! I was in awe, they came in, took a table and got some drinks and not 20 minutes later got handed some microphones.
I suddenly learned that men could actually do a high vocal range, as the two long haired guys sang and motioned out an incredible and funny performance of Queens Bohemian rhapsody.
Was this you early in your career? Do you remember something like this?
It would make my day to know if this true.
Life passes so fast. Enjoy yourself, Justin. You've made it. Whatever that means. You seem like a nice fellow. Take care, as I'm sure you do.
It makes my day brighter when I see a new video from this channel. G'day & I appreciate YOU & this channel, Justin Hawkins! Thank you!
The more I watch and listen to Justin the more I'm liking him, great channel, great content, great bloke. 👍👍👍👊✌️.
Justin has such a soothing voice. 🥰
Was into your most famous songs when I saw you at download festival. Now I can’t stop listening to your albums. Much love man🤘🏼
The new stuff is just as class
Not really a fan of his music, although respect him as a musician. but love listening to his input on things.
What a down to earth rock god. Saw them in Birmingham in 2006. Remains the best show I've ever been to. Every song played like it was the last. Just everyone having a great time.
This channel actually turned me onto to the darkness, I'd never heard of them but really liked Justin's personality on these videos, awesome he in a proper band!
We went to see you at Glasto that year, we knew one song and wanted to see what you were like live. Spandex, energy and guitar solos that early in the morning was frickin awesome, best start to a Glasto ever!
If he hadn't strummed that final chord, I wouldn't have been able to continue my day 😌
I love this channel. Such a charismatic, talented dude.
As an almost 60 year old musician, I enjoy your views on life cheers
Your honesty and contrition is a strength that will stay with you. 👍
I was in front of the Pyramid stage in 2003. I’d never heard of you and my mate said “you gotta see this lot man, you won’t regret it”. Absolutely blew us away, nice one!
Thanks Justin! I always feel better listening to your thoughts and takes. Thanks for sharing your gift! 👍
Thanks again Reid!
my first ever Glastonbury and you were the first band I saw there, coming out saying give me a d, crowd shouted back D and you followed it by saying give me an arkness 😂 absolutely amazing show!
Thank you so much for your video's I have learned so much from you and your brother!
This has become my new evening wind down, TV session. If only you knew how much you changed my life for the better. Recovery is a long road but I’m inspired. Love you mate.
I remember carrying a mate back to our tent as he sung I believe in a thing called love at about 4 o’clock in the morning! Loved that glasto performance. Seem to remember you playing street spirit as well (I think!?)
This is just a simple, humble thanks! It's a pleasure and, in the same time a learning experience, listening to your ideas, opinions, comments!
Love your take on guilty pleasures and your continuing positive as per usual 💙💙💙
Thanks Justin! Steve Taunton from NothingBox here. I love the channel. Your blend of insight, humour and compassion is refreshing in such a divisive and derisive climate of social media these days.
I hope you’ll consider reviewing one of my videos on a segment (or off)… maybe on a “Be Nice” episode? I can take it! I think…😒
If you do decide to address one, I have created a shortlist of videos for your consideration in a playlist called Songs for JHRA. Please consider those or any others. When you see somebody that clearly shares LP’s hairdresser, you’ve arrived!
Thanks! Cheers!
Hi Justin. I have become a fan of the pod cast because of your honesty. I have started sampling the Darkness albums and now understand the music. It is fun to watch the music videos and the live shows. Youre style reminds me of the heyday of live rock. Keep it up and cheers.
You are such a sweetie, I just want to give you a good squeeze! Thank you for sharing your light!
Hi Justin, loving this channel, and your performance at Download the other weekend was phenomenal. Would really like to hear about the formation of The Darkness and what you did up to the release of Permission to Land - getting the band together, writing the songs, rehearsing, recording (or if you could point us to where you've already talked about these things). It seems like a really inspired time full of joy. Many thanks, Danny
I loved your performance at Glastonbury in 03 .It was my 1 and only Glaso and you were the second act we saw after the also brilliant Har Mar Superstar and you both killed it no one matched it the whole weekend ..
Saw you yesterday on the dreadful motorbike show. You were brilliant and made my day. Thank You!
I saw the darkness on tv in 2003 and thought they were amazing! When I was at glasto that year with my brother I said "we have to see this band!" We got up extra early and got right up the front. When it started, I said they dont look like I remember from the tv. After a few songs and a double check of the programme we had indeed turned up an hour late and were watching Inspiral Carpets... gutted! Saw you guys at reading the same year I think.
Love it! 😂 sounds like something I’ve done
I was at Glasto that year, had no idea who The Darkness were but there was nothing else on that morning which interested me. They kicked ass, did a great cover of Street Spirit, and I saw them again supporting other bands over the next year or so.
🤣🤣🤣
Oh wow I LOVE the suit jacket. Looking fantastic.
You get better as a musician, and more handsome! with age. All the good vibes to you being able to run circles around your current self in the future.
So much love to you Mr. Hawkins ♡
I was there in 2003 and you did indeed bring us rock before breakfast! Still a highlight.
Yay for Phantom of the Paradise! One of my favorite films! Look forward to seeing your feature on it!
Hi Justin, I was there for your 10.00am Glastonbury slot and at your headline at Reading a year later. You rocked both times!
I love you Justin. You increase my enjoyment of music!
This will sound sad Justin, but I subscribed to your channel because I like your takes on modern music. I had zero idea that you're the singer for The Darkness. Wasn't and still isn't my cup of tea, but I do really appreciate your content. Thumbs up!
Yay!!! an EP on Phantom of the Paradise!!!!! HECK YES
I was at the reading festival gig, you were so humble about being there but rocked it, thank you!
I was one of those people who was at that set at Glastonbury. I was also at the Reading set..
Listen to you and the boys all the time a dose of darkness every day keeps the blues away love you all 💘
this is so true ❤
Always enjoy your videos. Thanks Justin
Thanks Denise!
LOL the way you describe the helicopter entrance gone wrong ☠😂very Spinal Tap🤘
Hey Justin, love the channel especially the industry insights. Michael Eavis once came by to check out a band at a small venue in Edinburgh that I was working at, it's a tiny venue and hardly anyone was coming to see the band which was a shame as they were great Anyway, as Eavis approached the door he tried to walk straight in and because I asked him to pay the 5 pounds cover charge he was very rude! I was holding my own as I knew that both the band deserves people to pay to see them, sound engineer etc need to get paid and of course that he could afford it. He proceeded after 10 mins of arguing back and forth to take out a money clip and handed me a 50 note with a smarmy look and said I hope you have change.
I was genuinely shocked at his behaviour and hope it was an off night. Long story short...no one likes a cheapskate when they are a millionaire and secondly no music venue likes the old "I'm friends with the band" to get out of actually supporting the band
So pleased I’ve stumbled on to this
What a lovely job you’re doing bud 🙏🙏
the autofocus with the thumb was great comedy
I definitely agree that you shouldn't be embarrassed by what music you like. If someone thinks less of you for liking a song that they don't, they probably aren't anyone who's opinion you should value.
Keep on trucking matey! Love listening to your comments.
"No such thing as a guilty pleasure" - couldn't agree more!
Brilliant news!!! I’m coming to,see you in Cardiff in January. Hope you’re the headliner.
Justin. What an incredibly intelligent gentleman you are. Xxx
Hello Justin, I remember very clearly ( surprisingly ) in 2002 or 2003 ( I haven’t bothered to check to be exact on the year ), I asked a few or so friends to go see this band at T In The Park in the morning as I was well slept, energised and motivational. The Darkness were playing roughly or bang on 12 noon as it said on the list, sounded interesting. I - and nobody else present at the time - knew much at all about you guys. I’m sorry to but I thought, at first sight, that youse were a parody of some sort but also a very good one... the more the set went on I realised I was watching ‘the real deal’ of Rock as it was and should be in its authenticity. I was not at all expecting that energy and pro eccentric rocker vibe at that time of day.
When your set ended, I bet my brother a tenner that You guys would be headliners the following year.
You were.
I never got my tenner though but I always know whose going to be and not... I was pleased enough to be entirely correct.
Bless ya.
Love from Bonny Scotland.
Justin, it is I, Manfa. Please can you do a video about some of your favourite fashion items and any great stories you have about them? I love both your stage style and your everyday vibe and would love to hear about some of your pieces. Just booked to come and see you and Black Stone Cherry in February…can’t wait! Keep up the good work, my man.
I heard you playing while I was dozing in my sleeping bag!
What an open, honest, humble and likeable guy!
What a cool guy, very down to earth and really interesting to listen to.
I can’t stop watching these now 😂
Love this!
I'd like to hear you doing a podcast or even an interview style program.
These 10 minute minuets are awesome! Keep going! Pat
I do a 2-3 hour livestream podcast every Sunday at 9pm BST on Patreon here: www.patreon.com/jushawk
Justin, regarding your band introductions and playlists, what 4 songs would you choose to introduce The Darkness and why? Keep up the great work! Rock on
Obviously that one that everyone already knows.... I believe in a thing called love. Honestly it's the only song I know... I remember when it first came out around 2003-4. Lol
@@Endersgamejp feel a bit of the other way around. I'm a bit of a Darkness nerd and know them all. Just can't begin to narrow it down to 4
I LOVE THE HAT.
I can't WAIT for your video on Phantom of the Paradise !! That movie is one of my absolute favourites!!! 💕
Loved your set at Leeds Festival in 2004 :-D
It felt like classic rock songs with proper guitar solos were finally back!
Such a strapping young lad! Only just discovered your smash 2004 hit in the Year of Our Lord 2022--still, inspiring! 🙏
Loving your channel Justin. Would you be kind enough to breakdown and discuss your Top Gear performance for Comic Relief and the arrangement of Red Light Spells Danger. This is my all time favourite rendition of that song.
Justin this channel is bringing me so much joy! Thanks so much. Would love to hear your take on Wet Leg. Love from Lowie x
I hope I dont offend you by describing your channel as almost a musical Russell brand. I very much enjoy your open and honest approach to your channel especially your ability to retrospectively look at all number of things but most of all how you apply it to your past, be it good or bad. Your frankness and honesty hopefully will inspire more to adopt these values that seem to be in short supply these days. Many thanks as always. 👍
I had a go on a previous video, regards you stopping to talk too much. I love these videos, and apologise for being grumpy. The way you answer these questions and talk about other bands, is always handled with respect and class. Keep up the good work.
You are just lovely
Thanks for answering my comment. You nailed my name, it’s phonetic. You did a good job
I rushed to see you at Glastonbury 2003. It was a joyous and exciting set. I saw you later that year on tour. You absolutely stole my heart that year.
I saw you guys when you opened Glastonbury. Loved the show. Couldn't work out if you were for real or just taking the piss but the music absolutely rocked 🤟🏻
With you on the Brixton Academy love and wanting to attend Glastonbury one day Jus. Can I request more "be nice" videos, they are my favourites! Also nice pants! 😉
So lucky to have been at the front waiting for you guys in 03 to play Glastonbury! Fucking amazing show
You pronounced my name right! A job well done mr. Hawkins!
I was at Glastonbury in 2003 and saw The Darkness perform... absolutely fantastic show.
Is it true that bands dread meet and greets? Does it feel weird or humbling when a fan is crying from over-excitement? And finally, what is the craziest/bizarre thing a fan has ever done/tried to do. I'm loving your channel.
This channel gives me hope.
Great venue ! I've been a few times especially back in the day. Love NIN I bet there was a great vibe in there. Loving the channel & you have a wonderful energy. Really find you voice rather soothing 😉😍
I remember you recording a album near Alford in Lincolnshire, it’s a long time since I lived there, but I vaguely remember it.
Oh and I love the intro lol.
10am - rise and shine and rock!
Thanks!
Thank you very much Brian :)
Phantom of the Paradise is one of my all time favorite movies! Enjoy your channel, love your band!
Hi Justin! Thanks for an incredible channel! I watch it almost daily. Congratulations on the upcoming UK Tour. Great to see The Darkness playing major arenas again. In another episode we could see you travelling to Oslo to play a festival. My question is what´s your strategy at festivals? Do you see it as an opportunity to meet and watch colleagues or do you keep to yourself? Do you have a favorite festival? I Know that The Darkness have performed at Sweden Rock several times. What do you think about Sweden Rock? As an artist, how important is it to know that the promotor of a festival has a stable economy so that will get paid? What´s your take on the recent Kingdom Come performance at Sweden Rock? Thank You for making med discover your great band. I hope you come to Sweden in 2023!
Great to hear your insights Justin!
Question for the next video. What was it like writing 'I've had it up to here' with Rivers Cuomo/Weezer? It feels like that songwriting collab went under the radar but the song has a strong Darkness vibe!
Hello Justin from a Canadian, and fellow Ron Sexsmith fan. I’ve just started watching your videos, and they’re very enjoyable. If you do another comments show, I’d love to know your thoughts of Ben Folds’ cover of “Get Your Hands Off My Woman”. Thanks!
I got back very early this morning from seeing the great Crazy World of Arthur Brown last night. After just turning 80 that guy is proof that the voice can persist. Pitch perfect screams and still immense power. Met him after the show and a genuinely lovely guy too.
How exciting you're going to do a Phantom Of The Paradise episode. I was wearing my death records t-shirt just the other day.
Justin, lovin the channel, and of course, the tunes! To that point, any chance you could do some videos on your songwriting process. As an aspiring songwriter I'd love to know more about your approach. (Also, what model is that Gibson acoustic...it's sounds fab)
Ooh… episode idea: demo your demos!
Take a demo recording of a Darkness song and walk us through the creative inception and process as we listen to portions.
Behind-the-demo-scenes, if you will.
Or even if you won’t!
See you on the ice, darling.
Speaking of Glastonbury and older rockers, how 'bout offering your thoughts on Supergrass, their place in 90's British rock, and their recent live performances including Glastonbury and Jimmy Kimmel on US TV. I feel they always sounded top shelf live when I saw them here years ago, but recent clips sound super boss!. Age, practice, wisdom, improved sound gear? Interested in your thoughts.
They were a great band. One of the absolute best British bands of the ‘90s. They were dripping with quality tunes like Going Out, Sun Hits The Sky, Mary, Pumping On Your Stereo, Moving etc.
I remember seeing the darkness live a ridiculous amount of times around then - supporting the Wildhearts, def leppard and of course at glastonbury!
For the next round of questioning!
I’d love to know about yours and the band’s headspace during the ‘One Way Ticket to Hell and Back’ era? I love the song ‘Girlfriend’ and the music video for it, but it definitely stands out from the rest of your songs from that time. I wonder if there was a lot pressure on you guys to try and have another mainstream hit and that was the one they thought would be it on your sophomore album?
Thanks, huge fan! 🤙
The Darkness and Black Stone Cherry, shit yeah that’s how you do it. Can’t wait for this. Big love fellas
Glad to see you use the most excellent G7 capo. I first used one twenty years ago and haven’t bought a different brand since.
Barrymores in Ottawa, totally has that feel - one of my faves
I enjoy ur channel thxs again Sir Justin from a hillbilly in prescott az
Hi Justin, I've been scrolling past your channel for a while (apologies) until the "You're Wrong About My Voice…" video appeared in my feed. Hadn't paid any attention to the band (again, apologies) but was aware of your voice and thought it might be interesting. So glad I hit play.
I really enjoy your thoughts and observations and was wondering about the dental work you mentioned in one vid. Were you worried it would alter your voice in a way where you couldn't sing the way you do?
Finally enjoining The Darkness but getting told off at home for playing Christmas songs in July.
The Darkness and yourself are one of my simple joys in life, truly, I hope you ride forever!!! 🎸
Heya Justin, love your channel , very interesting and great to hear stories about being in the rock biz. I’m relation to ageing rockers , what about ones that get better with age like the fantastic nicke andersson from the hellacopters , would love to see a video on him and or the copters . Rock on !!
The good thing about you Justin, is not only are you a great vocalist, but you’re also a great guitar player. So you will be able to continue to perform as guitar player even after your vocal abilities have diminished with age. It seems as though all the older rock bands I’m seeing out touring now have no problems with the guitar and bass playing yet have added younger, talented vocalist and sometimes younger talented drummers, and the show’s are completely enjoyable with having the main members. Check out the latest 2022 Skid Row tour videos to see what I mean.
The helicopter landing in the wrong field could have been a scene from Spinal Tap.
When will we get Dan Hawkins Rides Again?
A potential question for a future Q&A: As an artist in "Exile" in Switzerland - like Tina Turner and the late Scratch Lee Perry - are you aware of any current Swiss artists and/or the local scene where you now live? I really appreciate your channel and content. The Darkness isn't exactly at the center of my critically acclaimed musical taste, but your detailed and leveled view and analysis of an eclectic variety of music and topics makes the internet a much more enjoyable place. Thank you Sir and keep it up!
