Ah so this is the reason why this video has popped up. Btw I've watched all of your sub 20 minute recent videos. So freakin inspiring I made a video about it. Data Science student (ex ESL teacher) here.
Justin: "The lesson of that story is that honestly if we could do it so incompetently literally you have no f***ing excuse." That's the motivation I needed 😄
which is really like no advice whatsoever. I heard quite a few times the word "lucky". So basically it is "you need to get very lucky" and you need to persist. Oh and you need to start from out of college...
@@StefanHendriks Sometimes people don't need advice as they already know what they have to do. They just have to hear something like that to get the ball rolling.
It still boggles my mind I could be sitting at home commenting and chatting with one of the creators of Twitch like it's some other small time UA-camrs. Your success story is AMAZING and you're literally a super down to earth guy who looks really nice.
Justin, I hope you read this. I follow you on TikTok and here. There is one thing that I found among great things such as Twitch, Google, etc. There tends to be a lot of humility within the founders of those companies. I genuinely like the resilience you had when creating all these startups. Most importantly, I like the wisdom you share from all the experiences you had through it all.
PG: "What do you think about doing something different?" J Kan: "We've been working on this 9 months, invested heavily in it. Well, at least in ego... Fuck it, give us some money and we'll do whatever you say."
Awesome speech Justin. Very refreshing to see someone talk about their bad ideas and shitty startups instead of boasting about their success!! You're one of a kind bro :)
Another English Lit insight is the idea that you learn who you are and how you think by writing down your thoughts. You won't ever know if you're really happy, if you don't first understand what makes you happy. It's trite and obvious, unless you never get to have the opportunity to really think about it. I genuinely worry for a lot of people both young and old who obsess over writing (saying) things that others will like, as opposed to things that are genuine and insecure. Writing has become speech, and that is the only writing we really encounter. Encountering thoughtful things is more and more rare, and generally paywalled some way.
what were u selling when u sold that first startup? was it the IP mainly? and how did that transaction work? surely its not so simple as an ebay auction. it probably initiated a formal DD with the buyer with an entire process leading up to purchase?
Well, you are right, but back then it was WAY WAY easier to succeed with basically creating anything. At the moment everything is so saturated and 100x harder.
i guess you are right , but even having these basic ideas , like that of a calender or access to a computer lab could be said to be a great resource at that time , they were the emerging tech , similarly if you can work on like blockchain and ar then it will be a lot more valuable of an startup
@@AdityaTripathi Yup, but it's amazing his friends were willing to go through tough living conditions to make money, it's hard to find one person with that mindset let alone a friend group. They're amazing for that

@@VisionCS2 No I‘m not saying that you don’t have to do anything. But I’m taking him as an example, as in, even if you „half ass something/anything“ AND you’re lucky enough you’ll make it. It’s literally 30% work 70% timing if I would have to quantify it in some way. It’s not like he’s exceptional in any way, he hustled and got lucky which is true for most successful people. no such thing as small or big or not
and he didn't reply lol
There is certainly some survivorship bias at play here but taken persistence into account it makes sense.

woah, mad respect. This is seriously very inspiring.
3:54 “I would Google how to drag and drop and copy and paste the code into our web app”, this is exactly how software development works 😂

that's also the premise of no-code/low-code and why it is a way more efficient form of software development

Crazy to see how young he was and how in so little time, so much can change.

The way he referred to zuckerberg as zucc was funny as hell

Good question. The whole story is ridiculous in a bad way
All I see here is persistence, awful failure, normal failure then success.
Such a great advice
My YC application is still in draft
