Wonderful!!! I am making a list of foods to freeze dry as soon as I get enough hours of sunshine. I love the idea of having a fast meal without having to heat the kitchen in the summer.
@@rangerannie5636 I am powered by a solar system so no sun no power. I need sunshine to charge the battery bank to run the freeze dryer. It was a strange way to say that so you aren't ignorant just my not so plain explanation.
@@lyndabuchholz1216 What's funny is I am familiar with solar energy, but my mind was trying to make a connection between sun drying and freeze drying. I have been curious about the power draw from a freeze dryer and I imagine it's quite large. You must have a big system!
@@rangerannie5636 Actually the freeze dryer only draws a small amount more than a dehydrator. I was surprised, pleasantly though. I do have a fairly large system a bit over 9 kW. It works well but I wish it was a bit more so I could freeze dry in the winter when I have extra time to prepare the food. But we are working on that with a wind generator to add to the battery charging.
at the green tree grocer my daughter found me a container of Italian seasoning, for 10 dollars 28 oz. nice gallon size. i whirled that up in the blender to make a powder, as didn't like the whole herb pieces. I think though that McCormick uses a bit too much rosemary. I packed some for later and have a nice amount to use now. tasty sauces indeed!

You can get most of the air out of the baggy by using a straw. Close the bag leaving just enough opening for a straw, suck the air out. I hold it so I can pinch the straw if I need more than one go. I do this all the time when putting things in the freezer in baggies to prevent freezer burn. It works quite well.
Thank you for sharing your fast bean soup mix. I personally much prefer freeze drying and dehydrated veg in soup mix ingredients rather than canning. I know canning is good too but a freeze dryer is so worth the investment. I was fortunate to be able to purchase one after selling my last homestead. I offer family and friends to bring their harvest and we can freeze dry it so they can have that option for their food pantry too.
I am trying this for supper tonight. I'm not using the chick peas but am adding some canned chicken. If we like it, we will make up mylar bags of the mix for quick meals. We made several of the burrito mixes today! I am thrilled you are giving us goo recipes to use all the veggies and beans we have been dehydrating! Thank you!!!

I made your Tuscan bean soup jars- 9 so far. It takes a bit to freeze dry the ingredients. Love this idea. Can apply this idea for a variety of jars. Thank you ❤
Hi Pam, thank you for this. What I'd like to know is how you prepared the dry beans for the FD. Last night I finished cooking up 10 cups of dry chili beans; seasoned and simmered; cooled them and then refrigerated them over night because it was very late. I rinsed the beans this morning and filled each tray; they are currently in the freezer. My hope is that I will end up with loose, FD beans.
I did them the same as I did the dehydrated Fast Beans. I soaked them over night then cooked them until done and spread them on the FD trays. They came out perfectly! I think your way will also work!

I like your Merry New Year and Happy Christmas (interesting reordering). Jim
Very nice! I make a similar soup but have never added chick peas. Will certainly give that a try. Also, I add my spices in with my mirepoix ingredients when sautéing them, the spice flavor wakes up. I've been just wrapping them in a bit of plastic wrap but I like your little container idea. The aroma that will start wafting thru the room makes everyone hungry! I add bigger leaves of mixed dehydrated greens to the bottom of the bowls before putting soup in. Your adding to the soup just before serving is really a nice presentation. 👍👍
@@RoseRedHomestead Soon! I need to pick up some fresh spinach leaves to dehydrate on next grocery run. I usually have greens powder and frozen spinach on hand but looks like the rehydrated leaves are a perfect addition (and will pack into a soup-in-a-jar).
This is the best bean soup I have ever tried! I have made it twice, and set up three more jars ready to go. I could eat this everyday. For the mirepoix I had made up some dried and ground into a powder so I just added a couple of teaspoons to the mix and it seemed to be about right. Thank you for another wonderful, useful idea for all of us.
@@RoseRedHomestead I’ve been freeze drying up a storm! Working on emptying the freezer. Eggs, grass fed milk, salmon fillets, peas, okra, paste tomatoes, fresh parsley, cilantro and aloe vera juice from the garden, leftover Mexican rice. All has worked out well. We also freeze dried a batch of eggnog for Christmas gifts. This week I’m working on freeze drying our own rabbit meat.
Once again Thank You so much for bringing such good information to us. I think I will purchase as much freeze dried items as I possibly can instead of dehydrating every thing. Love the soups in a jar.
You are so welcome! I think that is a good option. There are foods that I purchase in #10 cans instead of dehydrating or freeze drying as well--like the carrots shown in this video. It is a balance between the cost and the amount of my time if I do it myself!
I Iove this! My only concern about putting the bouillian cubes inside each jar is the expiration date of the cubes will be sooner than the dehydrated or freeze dried beans, peas, and veggies. You will need to put that date on the jar. I keep extra jars of bouillian in my pantry for emergency use. It's easier to replace those if they expire first... IMO. Just food for thought.
I am so very impressed with you. I've been watching you for quite some time & have learned so very much from you. So thank you for sharing your wisdom & knowledge with us. Thanks to you I have become a prepper for our family! When will your cookbook be available to purchase?
This soup looks glorious and a slice of homemade bread would make one feel like a queen (or king !). We should have Gallon jars of Mirepoix put up!! Lol.
I have several cans of beans that have dates that are best by early 2022. I am deciding whether to dehydrate or freeze dry them. Looks like freeze drying is the way to go. Thx
Please help! Do you can fresh rhubarb? I have benefited greatly from your videos. Thank you for the integrity you and Jim bring to the process of preparedness.
Loved the video! Anxious to try the recipe. Dr Cantrel have you ever dehydrated ground beef? What is your opinion on doing that? There are lots of videos on doing it but I want to know what you think about it. I hope you and Jim had a very Merry Christmas! Ours was spectacular! A year ago my daughter-in-law was in ICU with covid. After 60 days in ICU and 45 days on a ventilator she came home. We felt very blessed this year to have our family together again for Christmas!
I am so glad and relieved that your daughter is home after that harrowing experience. I can't even imagine what you went through. Such a blessing she is recovering. And what a wonderful Christmas that must have been for your family. The USDA does not recommend dehydrating any meat except jerky, so I don't do it at all.
Merry Christmas 🎄. Thank you for another wonderful video. I can’t wait to try that soup. And I will be dehydrating everything that goes into it. I love your channel and hope you and Jim have a wonderful day.
Sharon: Merry Christmas! We are happy that you liked the Fast Beans video. Enjoy the dehydrating for the sou and let know about your successes. Our day has fairly quiet as we work on more videos and the cookbook. Jim
Ive been so excited for this one. Thanks so much. I have a freeze dryer on order, but, unfortunately there’s a long wait due to shipping delays here in Australia :(. I will make the dehydrated ones though. Merry Christmas to you …. And a safe and happy new year xo
Looks fantastic! Looking forward to the hummus process…I was just wondering if I could figure out a way to powder it as well. That would be wonderful for fresh veggies in a grid down summer situation. 😀
@@RoseRedHomestead thank you! I saw someone posted a recipe in your fast bean video using chickpea powder. I’ve copied that and will probably add roasted red pepper powder to make my favorite hummus. I’ll try it both ways to see which I prefer. Storage space is an issue in current home. Yum! Appreciate you more than you know.
You are a joy, i really like the freeze dried products better than the dehydrated, hoping to get on but my house is small so we will see. I wish you well and a Happy Healthy New Year to you and Jim and the rest of your family. I love learning from you.
A couple of ideas for you: - you measure using your hand and that would be a fantastic thing to teach your viewers! - Costco has some nice plastic shelf liner (2 rolls per pack, same area as the plastic wrap and the foil) it would be really nice to use in your stone counters to cushion the jars when you are setting them down. I believe shock trauma is cumulative in glass, but I am not sure and didn't research it. I cringe every time I hear one of those jars clink, and I bet I'm not alone. - You know how we're not supposed to can ham, but everyone wants it in their pea soup and bean soup? I think freeze dried ham chunks might be the answer. The other possibility is a few drops of Liquid Smoke seasoning. I have to experiment with it and figure out how many drops is needed. Love you and your videos, and of course, Invisible Jim, who makes it all possible. Thanks for being our guru, and for having the nerve to put yourself out there, to be the face of scientific inquiry and to normalize everyone's ability to experiment to find the answers to questions. Science: Anyone Can Do It Now! SACDIN! Now what does that remind you of? ;)
The sound from youtube videos goes straight into my hearing aids via bluetooth. Sound fluctuations can be painful. Great idea about freeze dried ham chunks.
Patti, you can pressure can ham and any other kind of meat. Just follow USDA tested recipes and instructions such as in the Ball Blue Book of Preserving.
@@RoseRedHomestead , My Ball Blue Book and my Mirro Pressure canner manual both have instructions on pressure canning pork chops and pork roasts. If one can pressure can poultry, rabbit, beef, fish, shrimp, clams and game there is no reason to not be able to pressure can pork. Thank you for another wonderful, useful idea for all of us.
Received my freeze dryer this week. I’ll be trying this.
Owlsome: Let us know how your tests and actual freeze drying go. Jim
This week I’m working on freeze drying our own rabbit meat.
you always give me great ideas and information!!!!!!!!!
Fion: Glad to help! Jim
What a great idea!
Another excellent vlog! Looked good enoigh to eat 😊 Tfs, please stay safe 👋
Merry Christmas to you and your family
Thank you, and same to you.
Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
farmstake21: Merry Christmas to you and yours, too! Jim
Great information!
You are so welcome! Pam's new book will be posted/published in a couple of weeks. I started editing last night. Jim
Great video!
Thanks! Jim
This soup looks glorious and a slice of homemade bread would make one feel like a queen (or king !). We should have Gallon jars of Mirepoix put up!! Lol.
Dottie: We agree with you! Jim
Merry Christmas
Rose: Happy holidays to you and yours! Jim
We do not can fresh rhubarb. Jim
You inspire me. Thank You to the most informative Couple on You Tube. In your debt yet again
Wow, thank you!
Loved it!
Yum yum yum!
It is very yummy! LOL!
A year ago my
daughter-in-law was in ICU with covid.
That is good enough for me. You are the expert! Thank you so much!@@RoseRedHomestead
We get excited too!
Kathy: Wonderful! Jim
Merry Christmas! Glad I found your channel this year! Looking forward to a new year with you & Jim. 🎄❤️
goldilox369: Merry Christmas! We are looking forward to making lots of videos this coming year, too. Jim
Karen: Merry Christmas to you, too! We are sorry to hear about the long delays for your FZDR. Let us know how your dehydrated ones work-out. Jim
Thank you, so simple easy and fabulous for a quick meal.
Yes, with those Fast Beans it is incredibly quick. And so good!
I enjoyed this whole process so much. Inspired to try variations. 😊
Thank you Pam for another great recipe!!! When is your cookbook coming out??? A must have! Happy New Year!
Yummo! Thanks
Looks fantastic! Looking forward to the hummus process…I was just wondering if I could figure out a way to powder it as well. That would be wonderful for fresh veggies in a grid down summer situation. 😀
I don't know about powdering the hummus, but I know you could powder the chick peas and go from there.
Merry Christimas for you 🌲🧑🎄
Same to you!
Merry Christmas 🎄
Anne: Happy holidays! Jim
You are a joy, i really like the freeze dried products better than the dehydrated, hoping to get on but my house is small so we will see. I wish you well and a Happy Healthy New Year to you and Jim and the rest of your family. I love learning from you.
Marie: Thank you! Jim
Thanks Pam I am going to try Pam 10-3-2022👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks for the recipe' can’t wait to get started on making some fast beans'
I am really enjoying experimenting with them. They are so great for food storage!
looks hearty and tasty.
Thanks, yes, it is both!
Pam, Merry Christmas to you and Jim!
Susan: Happy Holidays to you, too! Jim
Awesome.
Thank you.
Wow I love this soup mix.
Merry Christmas! I just bought a powder cream to make dehydrated cream soups too. I can’t wait to jar this up. So much fun.
DeplorableCB: That sounds fantastic! Happy holidays to you, too. Jim
fantastic! keep them coming.
Nancy: Yes, we are working on doing just that as often as possible. Jim
This is absolutely beautiful! Thank you very much!
Merry Christmas! Thank you.
Robin: Merry Christmas to you, too. Jim
Adorei essa sopa,rápida e ideal quando a gente está cansada ou doente. Abraços do Brasil 🇧🇷
Thank you.
That looks fantastic!
Thank you Pam, I am saving my extra $ to purchase a freeze dryer soon.
That will be fantastic. It greatly increases your options for preserving food!
A couple of ideas for you:
- you measure using your hand and that would be a fantastic thing to teach your viewers!
There are two USDA tested recipes that allow a little bit of ham or salt pork--split pea soup and Boston baked beans.
You are correct when stating that one should not can milk, eggs and other dairy. Love your videos and teaching style! There is a lot of work that goes into them.
Oh my Wendy! I thought it was fine to can milk. I see it done a lot on other channels.
Love the soup recipe. I need to make this. Thank you. Merry Christmas. 🎄
You are very welcome!
I would add cilantro and spinach, noodles, dehydrated potatoes.
gladtidings: Same, Sam as above! Jim
Thank you!
You're welcome!
This is great, thank you!!
Glad you liked it!
Merry Christmas!
