2017 Mac book pro 15 inch 512gb retina work horse no issues. Excellent solid laptop.
Thank you for the review! I just purchased this laptop refurbished, and had some questions and concerns as it’s my first refurbished purchase and my first time with MacOS since 2011. You’ve given some enlightening tips and information. My main use will be for school and I think I made a wonderful choice! Great video! Liked and subscribed.
Thank you!! How has your mac been going?
Hello do you recommend this for programming!!!? Please answer 🙏
Best take away for me in this video - I can convert the Touch Bar into the standard expanded controls. had no idea lol
Glad it helped :)
Thank you for this! I just picked up this model with the 512GB and 85 battery cycles for 600. I thought I may have overpaid but I guess not really. Thank you again Aldo.
Ohh nice choice on the bigger SSD! How’d are you finding it?
From where did u buy it?
mine works the same as when i got it 🙌 i use this & the new ipad pro as my full time set up and have no complaints
Love hearing that!
Oh yea, I also purchased the turbo boost switcher. Good call on that as well.
Definitely needed it
I just got my silver 2017 MacBook Pro 15" i7 2.8, 16gb memory with touchbar and 555 graphics from ebay for $380. It was being sold as for parts only. The seller said that the only issue with the laptop is that it's speakers were busted. When I received the laptop, I checked and saw that the laptop is still in near pristine condition. There is a barely visible dent on the top cover, some very barely noticeable nicks here and there, no scratches on the display. I tested it and so far, everything is working properly. I also tested the speaker and yes, it does sound muffled especially when playing something a above 50% volume but otherwise, sound is still very good. The battery lasts me about the same as your MacBook, about 5 hours or so usage before I need to charge it again. The 2015 MacBook Pro, to me, is still the best MacBook. I am not loving the design of the newer laptops. They looked like the 2007/2008 laptops. Honestly, I love the design of the 2016 to 2018 MacBooks, slim. If only Apple is able to solve that issue with the keyboard, I would love if they would recycle this case design into their future laptops, much like what they did with the iPhone 5S, applying it to their iPhone X.
Since I used to work as an authorized Apple tech, if the keyboard do break down, I will probably just buy a replacement top case and replace it myself. This is my first MacBook and so far, I am loving it.
This sounds like you got a bargain and if the keyboard ever has an issue I think you’ll be able to fix it too!!
Thanks for the recommendation as I’m a graphic and web designer and was thinking about getting one d after watching this video I can get it now
Oh that’s cool! Which one did you get?
Hi, im a design student nd thinking of getting this one. Does this work fine with photoshop n illustrator plus other design softwares?
This MacBook is the best choice for all students even though I recommend the IPad option over the MacBook for studying!
Thanks for your thoughts :)
I have been running into problems with my old mac mini which has been running my recording and video editing studios. My MacBook Pro 15" 2017 has been relatively unused lately so I was thinking of swapping out the Mini for it. Do you think that's a good idea instead of spending money on a new device?
If your 2017 is still doing everything you need I would say use it and don’t upgrade til you need to.
@@AldoJames Thank you so much. I appreciate the helpful reply.
I bought my 15'' MacBook Pro top model with 16GB RAM and Radeon Pro 560 4GB graphics card back in December of 2017. I have done HEAVY video and photo editing for the past 6 years and this laptop is still going strong. I did however get a laptop replacement under warranty from Apple because the USB C ports were kind of loose. I also got a free butterfly keyboard + battery + motherboard (essentially all the lower part of the computer) replacement under warranty. Finally my screen cracked in 2021 and Apple replaced it (no warranty) for about $1K.
So technically it's not the same laptop, due to all replacements I've gotten on it. I would say this computer is truly a work horse and despite my 4K 60fps video rendering, it is still going kind of strong. I might finally upgrade in 1-2 years, but a laptop that lasts me 8 years without going obsolete isn't a bad deal! That would be compared to owning a high end laptop for only $500 per year. And keep in mind, the resale value of these is still around $500-700 in the market, so I'm still going to get some of that money back once I replace it. Cool!
How good!! I mean a shame about the issues but they were swapped under warranty and if it works for you for close to 8 years I'd say that's a win!
I have this laptop, and if you are worried about the keyboard, don't. It was purchased in 2017, and Ive never had any problems with the keyboard. Just take good care of your Mac it will be fine.
Good to know!
I have one currently, I got it after graduating from College. I upgraded from an 2015 11in Macbook Air. I don't really ever use the touchbar, aside from brightness every now and then but it doesn't bother me. I'm getting more serious about my Digital Marketing Business and I wonder if I should/need to upgrade to a Macbook with the M1 chip. It honestly works fine for me other than having to replace the battery for once(paid for by the seller). What are your thoughts, should I upgrade or is it unnecessary?
If you’re Mac is doing everything you want from it, what benefit would a new Apple Silicone mac give you?
How god is it when you’re using it to stream?
I can get refurb same model (i7, 2.8ghz, Adeon 555) for $529 USD, would you say good value for a laptop for University for the next 2 years?
could you please write down the name of the program that you got from reddit? i wanna use it when i get mine:)
I bought this model immaculate with box for 489 with the 4gb radeon Pro 560 the reason I chose it over apple silicon is I can bootcamp on it and it runs well for both, great video btw
Ohh lucky! I wish I had gotten the 4GB GPU instead! sounds like you got a great deal
@@AldoJames yea I got lucky really , still worth having now in 2022
@@justarandomdude2 you can use OpenCore Legacy Patcher to run it on the machine it works well on the MacBook
Brother, I'm about to get the 2018 15-inch core i7 - 16 GB RAM - 512 for entry-level video editing so will it handle the job and the video editing software like Adobe Collection, Final Cut.. etc.
Your answer will surely be appreciated ❤
Are you editing 4K of 1080P? I think it would struggle for 4K editing tbh
Do you know if MacBookPro 2018 supports Metal 3? It is Intel + Radeon Pro 555X. On apple website they say it doesn't support Metal.
Well, as the used M1 MacBook Air is at least 700 EUR here in Europe and this machine can be had for like 450 EUR, if you don't mind spending some time finding a good deal on eBay, the question is tougher than it looks in the video. Went for this 15" MBP as a secondary machine (office machine) after my 13" M1 though I insisted on buying the M1 Air first 🙂
Good points! How are you finding the Mac?
Hello I hope u answer, is this still good for Admin work? I work remotely and looking for a budget friendly macbook. All our apps are web-based. The software we are are just VPN for example.
This is a great Macbook for admin work as it has a nice big screen. Did you end up getting one?
@@AldoJames Hi Aldo! I did yes! Thanks for this video 😊
Thanks for your video. Would you recommend the MacBook Pro 2017 (non touch bar) for students in 2022? I see Amazon renewed deals in about $450-$500
For a student it's a good computer!
Better go for the M1 Air
@@wutangcatclan THIS, M1 air is about 700-800 used but it will last you another 10 years. That new chip is waaay ahead of this time
Do you recommend that I buy it (I will use it for programming, my field of study is data analysis) mac book pro touchbar, touch id, 15 2017 i7 2.90Ghz Quad Core 8Cpu /16G Ram / 512ssd / dual graphique intel uhd+/ Écran retina 3k 15.4ips / amd radeon pro 560 4gb avec batterie 4-5h cycle 560???
I think it's still a pretty good option for programming if it's within your budget
Legion 5 vs this Mac book pro ? For web coding ?
I want to get a 1tb version for 640 is that a good price
I was debating on either going with a M1 or intel based Pro and for me not being able to bootcamp on the M1 was a deal breaker. It is a shame because all around I think the M1 is perfect other than not supporting Windows unless you want to run it in a VM. I agree with you though for most people just go M1 air.
What did you end up going with?
@@AldoJames I ended up going with a late 2017 15” pro. I snagged it for $750 on Amazon refurbished and other than the battery life not being as good as the M1 I have no regrets.
@@kylebadders6114 great to hear you’re happy with the pro!
I very recently found one for only AU$299, and it's so worth it for the price!
Yea it is!! Did you get it?
@@AldoJamesyeah I did and the main problem I had with it was the battery which I replaced for about $150 and now it works flawlessly
Good enough for music production?
Reply please
Up
Hey guys, I don't really do music production but if it's anything like video editing it would still do a moderate amount without much hassle
Do you recommend getting 15’ pro 2017 or MacBook Air 2020 ? Which one is better?
Unless you really want the bigger screen, the Air 2020 would be what I'd recommend
@@AldoJames I forgot to mention that the air is m1 and the pro is intel i5
Just bought one for 250 dollars. I think it is a great price for this laptop
No way!! That's such a bargain! How is it going?
hey,can you link me to where I can get one at that price?
@@sadique_x_ I found mine on facebook market place :)
@@AldoJames very cool. if it is still valid can you send me a link to the dealer?
@@sadique_x_ It was a person selling it so I think they only had one
Just bought one eBay certified refurbished and it comes from a verified seller with an Allstate 1 year warranty. $560 after tax. I’m using it for light school work and to teach myself how to navigate MacOS.
How did you find it?
This one good for video editing?? And aftereffects
It's still great for video editing for me
About to get mine
Ohh! What spec? How is it?
@@AldoJamesupdate :
I hated it
At first I thought I’d be fine but it started crashing way too much .
Went for a base model 2019 recently
I have the 2017. But i like my 15 inch 2014 i7 more. And you can upgrade the ssd. And the 2014 is way more reliable than the 2017
I'm about to buy one in 2023. Thanks for the advise, I'm like you. 15" screens are better
Did you get it?

@@Ali_king7Taro how are you liking it so far? I’m getting mine this weekend!
Just bought this as my first apple computer. Let's see if the ghost of steve jobs approves.
my 2017 mbp is being repaired by apple its either the screen or the mother board they are charging a flat rate of 675 i was thinking about just buying a macbook air w/ the mi chip but i like my 15 inch screen and 16 gb ram and 500 storage so like aldo says it is plenty good enough for family editing my artwork in photoshop and logic pro tracks for my originals but the parts are only guaranteed for 90 days so i'm taking a big risk this 2017 only lasted 4 years before this major fix so as you all know thing somehow break after the warranties are expired 😖😭😭
Oh man that sucks! Honestly it’s a risk when then warranty runs out. For most people the M1 Air would be the better option I just love the bigger screen like you! Hopefully they repair it and you get many more years out of your 2017 MacBook Pro!
@@AldoJames thanks still waiting for part I'm waiting they say probably next year a 15 inch m2 mb air sounds cool😀
any updates?@@kennethochoa7550
MACBOOK PRO LATE 2017 15 INCH TOUCHBAR I7 Q-C 3.1 16GB 512GB 4GB CARD… bro is this laptop good for graphic designing ??
It should still run pretty much every program you throw at it but obviously not as fast as a M1 Macbook
Did you get it and are you happy?
1-10, How okay this model for 2023?
I just edited and exported a 30min 4K video which took about 50 minutes on it but it still handled it like a champ. As you can pick up a good condition one of these now for $750AUD, I would give it a 7. Still has the latest MacOS, great looking powerful machine. Main downside I see compared to newer Macs is the battery life & heat. Are you thinking of getting one?
In short: AVOID the crappy 2016-2018 models.
Either get the 2015 for cheap (rock solid, good ports and keyboard)
Or the Intel 2019/2020 models
Or the current models
I think the 2019 are currently the best value for money for most people
may i ask why are the 2016-2018 crappy and intel 2019/2020 is better? cuz i dont know much about macbook but i was considering to buy macbook pro 2017 13in cuz my friend offers me for (for me) a considerably good price
Avoid intel MacBooks. Go straight for at least the M1 chipset macbook.
@@Salty_Biscuitz88 ah i see gotcha. thanks for the tips
@@Salty_Biscuitz88 nah bro my dad got me this for my birthday it’s more than great
I am going to buy this MBP to my best friend for $600 USD. A complete steal if you ask me, the new MBP are overpriced for what they are lol Apple went completely nuts with their absurd pricing for the specs that you are getting.
I think the performance of the new Macbooks is an incredible jump forward but for most people (like you and me) even the older models handle everything we throw at them but I can see for the creative profressionals they'd want to most power they can get...this being said it still doesn't mean the new Macs are cheap 😅
What are you talking about? The M1 MacBook Air is so much better than this. I used to own this exact 2017 15 inch MBP. It is nowhere as good as the M1 except for the screen size and the speakers.
@@Salty_Biscuitz88 The M1 Processor is not enough to justify their crazy prices. I would always take a PC or even a Gaming Laptop than a new overpriced Apple Product lol
@@riversmakris M1 MBA is cheap for what it offers. It's only $800 for new if you know where to find. It is even cheaper than alot of windows laptop. I can't justify paying $600/$700 for a used 5 years old laptop, that the battery is probably dying and with that awful butterfly keyboard. I'm so glad I managed to sell off my 2017 15 inch MBP last year for about $1000 and got M1 Macbook air.
@@Salty_Biscuitz88 Nah fam, I would keep my Y540 with the specs it has even if it is a 2019 model vs a new MBA or even MBP lol
Im in a bid for one, currently its 80 us
How did you go?? that's such a great price!!
@@AldoJames it raised to 260 in a single bid :/ i found a 2016 one currently 26$, hope i win it

@@AldoJames it’s good, aside from the fact that I accidentally ordered in Spanish… I had to replace all the keys to make it normal, other than that it works perfectly for what I need it for
I’m sad that he paid $1000 for a weaker Intel machine than a m series Mac
I was happy with the larger screen at the time and I’ve now upgraded to a 14” M1 Pro MacBook Pro
