Presume all you guys a have seen the film THE HEAVIES about highland Games in Scotland...featuring Matt Vincent ...search Amazon Prime Video for 'THE HEAVIES'
Great point about it taking a long time to get good at it. My first games in Greenville 5 years ago, I completely expected to win even though I had never competed before.....I did not win.
aaron george I'm competing in Greenville in May. My first also, how hard was it to get used to the events? Have you ever done anything like that before?
In light of your finishing statement about not taking things too seriously and having fun, I'm reminded of the first Highland Games my wife and I attended. We were impressed with the comradery between the competitors and how the more experienced ones would help the less experienced with their technique. We enjoy the games though I go to watch and drink tasty adult beverages with other kilt wearers.
Great video Mike. Respect to the Bare Crew for their willingness to try it out and have a good time. Especially enjoyed the details about getting started. Thanks!
I am going to be competing in my first highland games in the amateur division next month. I've been wanting to do this for a while. And now is the time to do it. This video is certainly one of the most helpful videos I have found. Thank you!
Thank you for this information. I'm a women and am interested in competing some time in the future. You have given lots of good notes. I live in NC and Asheville area (WNC) is heavy on scot-irish festival. Thanks again!
Hi Nick, Saw the video and thought it was great. Here is my dilemma. I’m 50, never did track or field and am only recently been getting back into shape with a trainer with great success. For older competitors who are new to the idea of getting involved it’s a bit more tricky I should think. Are the basic training ideas the same but on a much reduced scale? I like the idea of attending a festival since one can talk to people who are out to enjoy themselves and are older.
The only local competition in Georgia (the state) is the highland festival which is invite only and their director said invites are based on placings from previous years. So I have no idea how to get started in this.
love the video Mike! definitely happy that I found the highland games, it's been the most fun I've ever had competing and the people I've met make the experience even better.
I'm absolutely competing next year. There are a few games within driving distance up here in Ontario and we'll be hitting them as spectators this year to try and meet some people. Was wanting to start throwing this year, but I decided to try my luck with powerlifting and figured it would help build a solid base at the very least.
I see Nick was worried about hurting everyone but his buddy with the hammer.Safety tip: never stand to the left of a right handed thrower with the hammer!
Enjoyed the video. Just wondering which implement were the Bare brothers most surprised by throwing? I know the first time I tried HWD it was the most awkward thing that I had ever tried to do. Like Nick said that he had seen you and Matt throw it and so had I but seeing it done and doing it are not the same. Thanks for the video.
Watching you big ass guys struggle with the weight for distance made me laugh. I am supposed to compete in my first Highland Games in Scotland in July if the Corona will go away.
Me: I live in Arlington Texas. I doubt there are many Highland games competitions near me. Him: ...here in Round Rock Texas... Me: well there goes my excuse.
I'm thinking about competing for the 1st time at a Ren Fest in my area coming up but I only weigh 155lbs, I lift weights regularly and I'm pretty strong for my size but I feel I'm on the light side for competing, I'd say the minimal/recommended weight is probably around the 200lb mark.
Sheaves and other gear can be found at throwbros.com, but the metal implements are better sourced from local guys doing it independently. It's not really cost effective for any shop to make them at scale.
Are there any good forums or message boards for finding local groups? I’m in Ardmore, Ok. I want to give this a try. But I’ve never been a thrower, and want to make sure I don’t injure myself.
Africans, Asians, Mexicans, English, German, Russian, polish etc... Everyone in the world pretends to be Scottish and comes to these events. There is no longer anything special about it. Our sacred traditions, bloodline, and heritage has become a game for anyone to play. You, just like fucking anyone, can indeed ruin and shit on these joke events if you want.
@@AudioJeep I mean why don't you want your culture shared and celebrated? This is at least something decent to come out of a country that has such an oppressed and suppressed history...

David Gilbert yeah those kids are pretty much down for anything. They are awesome.
Watched this, and immediately bought tickets to a highland games weekend not far from my town. Thanks!
Love it! Have fun!

"You know I don't do anything half-assed, Mike."
*wears yoga pants under kilt*
Great info! Thank you! Trying my first highlander next month!

This is a great video for anyone trying to get into the sport! Thank you for posting!
Just learned power clean/hang clean recently.
Always like the idea of Highland games but now I want to see what I’ve got in me
this is what I have been looking for: been Following Matt for a long time. Hoping to jump into my first HG in 2018 here in TN!
The only local competition in Georgia (the state) is the highland festival which is invite only and their director said invites are based on placings from previous years. So I have no idea how to get started in this.
But there are plenty of amateur competitions in the southeast.
love the video Mike! definitely happy that I found the highland games, it's been the most fun I've ever had competing and the people I've met make the experience even better.
Jacob Nowak totally agree
Definitely the most fun sport I've been involved in. Haven't been doing it that long, but every event I've done has been a blast.
Jimmy Dawson Amen!

I see Nick was worried about hurting everyone but his buddy with the hammer.Safety tip: never stand to the left of a right handed thrower with the hammer!
there is one in my hometown every year. Scotland county highland games in NC
this is excellent stuff
Super helpful! Great video
I just signed up for my first game! I did a few power lifting competitions and decided, what the hell, I'm not getting any younger! I can't wait!
brooksjedi awesome!!!
Mike Beech any tips you can give me? I've been training more at the gym with movements simulating throwing, with moderate and heavy weights.
The guy in black and white pants that’s recording during hammer was right in the kill zone
Wow, that one camera guy was in a bad position if someone had let the hammer go early, but otherwise, nice video
Thank you for your video! Wondering if there are any competitions for kids out there? My son is interested but I'm not finding much out there.
Looking for recommendations on making your on equipt to practice with.

Timothy Bliven oh, wfd for sure. The 56 respects no one.
Competing in Wyoming next month!!
Hell yeah man have fun!
Watching you big ass guys struggle with the weight for distance made me laugh. I am supposed to compete in my first Highland Games in Scotland in July if the Corona will go away.
Out of all the games...i want in on the hammer throw.
FYI Wyoming has a Celtic festival
It was about training without weapons after disarmament and subjugation.
Do you need to do all the events or can you focus on one or two? Looking to focus on caber throwing
Me: I live in Arlington Texas. I doubt there are many Highland games competitions near me.
Him: ...here in Round Rock Texas...
Me: well there goes my excuse.
Can I drive down sometime to meet y’all and possibly get an introduction to the implements and games?
Do they no longer have Texas Scottish Festival at UT Arlington?
Hey we have one in Wyoming lol, Cheyenne Bison Classic!
Find a machinist to mill and tap a steel block that would be cheapest for the steel throw
As you say it takes time to get into the HG throws. At the end of the day its so much better then T&F :)
Rad. I'd be absolute crap, but I need this in my life. Cool video as always
Mike Dunn everyone sucks when they start. come play!
I am from the Dallas metroplex... is there practices anywhere
Whats the minimal weight you recomend being at for highland games? Also picking up one of the weights tommorow when they drop

Do you have any vids for WOB?
Whole ass everything... Wasn't that one of Spraggins's Instagram names?
Zach Lucas indeed
I know this is a longshot, but where do you get your equipment from?

where do you practice? my wife might lock me out if i turned our backyard into dent city
Champ.
Just trying to be like Joe.
Are yall completing in salado?
Are there any good forums or message boards for finding local groups? I’m in Ardmore, Ok. I want to give this a try. But I’ve never been a thrower, and want to make sure I don’t injure myself.
Facebook is your best bet these days.
Any terms you can recommend? I’ve tried “Highland games” and “heavy athletics/athletes”
Sporran next time.
Fox head or something fly.
No point wearing a kilt without a blade in your sock n wear a sporran. Mabey a fox head...
Hello. Prob ganna be a really stupid question.
That weight on the chain is the 56lb (25.4kg) right?? What's an average sort of distance for it?
Devils Knight pros throw well over 40 feet. Amateurs should be in the 30s.
I know you didn’t want to go into a big detailed history but try to give the correct history.
Be my guest!
Good video bro. I’m always going to give you crap. Lol but eh good videos. Bro. Can’t wait to compete against you my self
Great video but I would like to point out that us Scottish are also British. Not just English people can be British.
We should. Colab together bro.
Cool man. Hit me up on Instagram.

...do you have to be Scottish to compete in the games? What about professionally? I know, silly question but I want to be sure.
Nope, takes all kinds.
Does race matter?
Can I be welsh and compete in a scottish festival? lol
I mean I was just making a humorous comment among the different British Isles nationalities but yeah I'm down for ruining something

Dear god, that’s some of the worst hammer throwing I’ve ever seen, I’ve thrown better drunk
I already throw as the youngest thrower
