  • I went to Scotland's Highland Games. Many Highland Games are held throughout Scotland ever year and a lot of these events take place in the Scottish Highlands. Even though I am from Scotland, I have never been to a Scottish Highland Games. In the south of Scotland where I’m from, we don’t tend to have these events.
In this Scotland travel video, I make my way through Glen Coe and Fort William to reach the town of Morar to attend the Mallaig and Morar Highland Games 2023, an event held every year in August.
This Highland games kicked off with a Scottish ceilidh, a traditional Scottish event that incudes a lot of Scottish dancing!
The Mallaig and Morar Highland Games event has four categories - heavy, athletics, dancing and bagpiping. Heavy is what most people associate with the Highland Games and it was great to see the caber toss and I even manage to have a go myself!
If you’re planning to visit Scotland, I highly recommend adding a Highland games event to your Scotland travel itinerary. It’s a great way to experience Scotlands’ history, culture and heritage!

I remember 56lb (pound) weights (an approx 20 X 12 X 15 cm cube of iron with the cylindrical handle and semi circular cylindrical cut-out forming a hand grip in the top surface) being used with a rope tied to the handle to hold thick plastic sheeting over market stalls in Swaffham market - they were a very common sight in rural communities in the 1980's

I am a member of the Clan Colquhoun society and as well as website designer attended the clan games at Luss each year. So watched many of the highland games in the field. Best was in the procession from car park to games field vis Luss pier on west shore of Loch Lomond. All behind a couple of pipers. No matter how maybe i have heard. The sound of the pipes brings out the proudness of being Scottish.

Hi Ruth , that was great I’ve never been to a ceilidh or a Highland Games despite living in Scotland all my life. You’re a joy to watch as your so bright cheerful and always have a smile. It was good to hear from the up and coming youngsters who are keeping the traditions alive, well done to them. 👍Looking forward to your next adventure, have a great week. 😊x

It's slightly amusing that you are a native Scot and just went to your first Highland Games -- I am of Scots and Irish descent living in Maryland in the US, and I have been to many Highland Games (and Irish Festivals) in my life -- not that far from home! But now I hope that you try to get to one or two a year to hang out with the friendly and motivated folk -- do some dancing and have some great food!

Love attending Here in the USA. In spite of my many trips to scotland I have yet to be on time for any in Scotland. A curious note for USA versus Scotland events. In the USA they actually sell Swords and Dirks and such and many walk around wearing them. Also, it is ok to wear clan gear without being in that clan and half the people are in Royal Stewart! A no No in the Kingdom.

In 2000 I also had a wonderful time in Dunoon at the Cowal games and the Highland Dance championships. Those dancers are in awesome shape - very impressive.

@ruthaisling Yes, I've been to Highland Games in Washington and British Columbia and a "fiddler's convention" in North Carolina. Wonderful days out (sun screen a must!), but none had the intensity of the Cowal games. Maybe it was the inclusion of the world Scottish dance championships. Also fun is the Celtic Colours festival in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, a smaller version of Glasgow's Celtic Connections. 🙂

My favourite Highland game is Sheep Worrying. You have to walk up to a sheep and ask it some awkward questions, pose some existential dilemmas that sort of thing.
If you can make the sheep frown you win a prize such as a Tunnock's Tea Cake and the sheep is offered counselling.

The first time I heard bagpipes I stopped dead in my tracks...I was so mesmorized! Long puzzeled by my reaction, I finally did what I'd put off doing, I did some genealogy via 23andMe. Much to my surprise - part of me not - I found out I have some Scottish genes in my mix. To this day bagpipes thrill me, especially when hearing "Scotland the Brave." I watched a YT video of 'The Black Watch' perform "Scotland the Brave" and, call me crazy, but it felt like mystical tears flowed. Thanks for sharing this video. Be well - many blessings. Cheers...

The west coast is also famous for the silver sands of Morar. I liked how young Byron knew he was just a novice and appreciated the help of the older athletes. Beautiful views of the Highlands. The sound made by bagpipes is one of my favorite sounds because it gives me a sense of nostalgia, similar to the oboe. The plaid pattern of the traditional costume kilt is now a familiar sight as the uniform of Japanese school girls, but this is where the origins lie, and you will be surprised by the beautiful variations of the plaid pattern. This festival looks like it will be lively and fun, like a Japanese sports day.

Great fun! Where we live in Ontario, Canada, there is a large popular of people from or with Scottish, Irish, English and Welsh heritage. There are quite a few Highland Games held across the province. There is one town near our city called Fergus and it is very Scottish. They host a wonderful highland games each summer and we've been a few times. I think it has been going for over 75 years. I did a quite search and they get over 25,000 people attending each year and I don't doubt it as it is always busy. Such a fun day out. Great music, food, heavy events and more. Well done with your "toss". The athletes make it look so easy, don't they.

We have something like the ceilidh in Texas. It's called "square dancing." Looks almost the same. I wonder if it was brought here by Scottish immigrants. Here's a bit of Texas trivia. Our state capital was built by Scottish stone masons. Supposedly because they are experts with granite.
Bagpipes are crazy. You need to be a big windbag to play that instrument.

Scots-Irish, (Ulster Scots) were very many of the pioneers to cross the mountains into the wilderness. Ran across another factoid, that more than 27 million US citizens today have Scots-Irish heritage. Also noted that american Bluegrass Music sounds like Scottish music without the pipes, and our "Clogging" dances likely evolved from the dancing shown in your video.
