6:45 You have no idea how condensed this video is. Pavel Datsyuk was such a spectacular player that he would routinely make highlight reel plays just about every time he stepped onto the ice.
There's an in depth career highlight video series that's 3 and a half hours long, and every second of it is just spectacular hockey.

People only look at his points and judge him. Hes one of the best 2 way foward ever. Greatest stickhandling skill ever. Doesnt have the fastest hands. But he uses what he has better than anyone. Ever

He basically pioneered the takeaway artistry on defense. Truly one of the best 2 way forwards and a human highlight reel.

He actually left the Red Wings and the NHL to go back to Russia to play in the KHL. He's still dominating the KHL now, at 42. He probably has the most impressive deking highlights of any NHL player imo. Lots of his teammates said that he could have scored a lot more goals and gotten even more assists if he had wanted to play more focused on offense alone , but Datsyuk wanted to be a great all-rounded player, so he spent as much effort and time defending (and stealing the puck so many times from the opposite team) which is why he won the Selke trophy (Best Defensive Forward) so many times. Its kind of long so you could probably break the video up into multiple parts but you should react to "The History of Hockey (CBC Documentary)" its long but it'll give you some decent insight into the sport.

Datsyuk and Zetterberg were known as the "Euro Twins". Both played their entire NHL careers in Detroit. They were both LATE round draft picks and if they hadn't been so good, Detroit would have started their downfall at least 5 years earlier after Nicklas Lidstrom left. There's another guy to look up to appreciate the defensive side of the game. Also a guy that never played for another team. Steve Yzerman, their current GM, was also a career Red Wing. And Tomas Holmstrom, who was famous for having his goals called back for goalie interference. Niklas Kronwall, another one. There are big hit compilation videos of him around.
Detroit hasn't made the playoffs since Datsyuk left the NHL.

For a few years, I would have taken Datsyuk over any other player in the league. Absolutely elite at every single facet of the game. He could have scored many more points if he wasn't so responsible defensively.

Datsyuk was so dangerous because he didn't just have great hands and control, he knew the game and was a complete player. There are defensively minded forwards who can score and then you have Datsyuk. He was a scorer who understood how to defend. He should have won more Selke Trophies because he was a true 200' player.

Great job reacting to the magic man. The best 2 way player the game has ever seen. The best hands the game has ever seen. I almost tear up re living the old highlights . He was that good. A hockey immortal. If you want a good laugh, check out the the video of him playing keep away with Trevor Thompson. If you want to check out another red wing, check out sergi federov. He was waaaay faster than Pavel, played amazing d and scored a ton of goals.

This video reminded me of something else about him. Players could not just push him off the puck. I don’t know why. He’s not a really big guy. Strong legs and great balance I guess. At 9:22 he knocks Zdeno Chara completely off his feet. Chara is the biggest hockey player in history. 6’9” tall.

KHL is a Russian League, with some teams from other countries, like a team from Finland and one from China. Almost all countries has his own national championship in Europe. Some little countries or countries where hockey is not that much popular have a championship with teams from 2 or 3 countries.

as you picked up on. For much of his career, he was one of the best thieves in the NHL and he was also one of the hardest people to take the puck from. If he had the puck the only way you were getting it back was by digging it out of the back of your net.

You mentioned early that you never heard of him. Pavel could have had many more goals but he played his role for the team first. He was one of the defensive forwards you want on the ice. His ability to steal the puck and just clear the zone on the penalty kill, or score short handed if the opportunity arises. He would have had more points and goals if he wasn’t so selfless.

The Red Wings have a long history of great players spending their entire lengthy careers in their uniform. They are an original 6 nhl team the other 5 also have the same ( New York not so much lol) . Actually Gordie Howe played his whole ( first.. 23 year ) nhl career in Detroit as well and I’m sure you know he was until Gretzky came along the all time leader in points and goals and is still widely considered the greatest all around player ever . The man played at a high level until he was in his mid 50s . And that’s just 2 there are several more examples. Great video btw

How good was Datsyuk? Crosby stayed as far away from him as possible because when he didn't things didn't go well for him. Want to make Crosby haters smile? Watch Datsyuk get missile lock and blow Crosby up with an open ice hit or make him spin in circles like a cat chasing a lazer pointer. I don't think there is one head to head interaction where Crosby beat Datsyuk. It just didn't happen.
