So points wise, he doesn't necessarily rank that high. He's 117th on all time points leaders for the NHL with 314 goals and 608 assists ( higher if you count his time in the KHL, a Russian league that would probably be just behind the NHL in player quality worldwide). But what really set him apart was the things he could do with his stick primarily, but secondarily his defensive play was top notch. He not only won 2 Stanley Cups with the Wings, but he also made 5 all star teams, won the Selke trophy 3 years in a row (best defensive forward in the league) and the Lady Byng four years in a row (best conduct and sporting ability), and also had the highest plus minus in the league several times for what that's worth (plus minus basically just means how many goals happened both for and against your team while you were on the ice). Not to mention he also has an Olympic gold medal from 2018.
Sorry, got carried away with his accolades. Point is, he was one of the best stick handlers in history, one of the best two way players in history, even if his production wasn't quite up to snuff against guys like Ovechkin or Crosby.

He's the most creative hockey player to ever live, but he's probably around the 20th best all-time. He was remarkable defensively and offensively. If he was faster and taller, he could be in the conversation of the best ever. He was 5"11 190, optimum size for a center is 6"1-6"3 200-220lbs. There is no height too tall for center and no weight too high if you can maintain speed and conditioning. That said, you don't want to be short or under 190lbs

Dude, thanks for finally watching some Datsyuk, aka "The Magic Man". He's my absolute favorite of all time. And yes, he's arguably the best stick handler in the game, so far anyway (a lot of young guys grew up watching him and are now imitating that stuff in junior).
Also, my personal favorite story from an NHL insider named Chris Johnston involves Datsyuk. Apparently when he used to go around interviewing players, one of the questions he used to ask was "who is your favorite player to watch?". Because if you just asked them "who is the best", while you'd get a lot of Sid and Ovechkin in there, you'd also get a few other names. But Chris said that if you instead asked them "who is your favorite player to watch", the answer was almost universally Pavel Datsyuk. That just says it all to me. Even other NHL players thought he was amazing.

Drafted 6th round, 171st overall...like no one had a clue.. Similar to the players who had to be on the ice with him. Grew up watching him and the red wings. So smart out there, it's like he was playing a different game than everyone else at times. King of takeaways.

I’m a lifelong red wings fan, and the best way I can describe the red wings from 2004-2012 was that any time Datsyuk was on the ice we had not only hope, but true belief we could win that game. He had a way of being the tone setter and the pacemaker for every single game he played in. There could be chaos on the ice and then his feet hit the ice and the puck is on his stick and within seconds your team looks calm and looks like they are in control.

I got to see Datsyuk live a few times. It’s funny watching him because he looks skinny and small compared to everyone else, he’s not as fast as the fast guys but he had incredible body control along with his stick control. I used to say he was the perfect speed because some fast guys during his time would skate their way into trouble. He was always going the perfect speed to see his surroundings and he was an incredible feeder. His goal scoring skill was fine, nothing crazy but he was such a great passer and offensive defender

One reason Datsyuk was so special is because he was doing this at a time when there weren’t as many skill players in the game as there are today. He was one of the guys who proved hockey could be more than just big hits and slap shots. A lot of guys who play today grew up watching Datsyuk and wanting to play like him.

Your comment "his arsenal of skills" is 100% correct Mert!! I grew up with hockey and the Detroit Red Wings..and as you said...He IS an artist! and YES...watching him live in Hockey Town was truly mesmerizing. He played for the Red Wings from 2001 - 2016. He is from Russia. So he did end up going back to Russia to play for his hometown team Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg in the KHL. I believe he has retired from hockey as of 2021. In 2017 he was named one of the NHL'S 100 best hockey players in history. He is known as the "Wizard" or "Magic man" rightly so! Whether he was doing his awe inspiring puck/stick handling, legendary shootout moves or his entertaining clever dekes..he was ALWAYS special to watch. I miss Him and ALL the Red Wings from that time period (2000's) Zetterberg, McCarty, Fedorov...awesome memories in Hockeytown back then🏒❤ Btw...Love your channel & reactions👍👍

Growing up, he played for the NHL team closest to where I lived. I had the absolute pleasure of watching him live for a decade. He was by far, and to this day, my favourite player to touch a hockey stick. He’s who I modelled my own game around, who’s highlights I’d watch to try and get better.
While yes, Pavel was incredibly skilled on offence, he was also one of the best defensive players as well.
There’s a saying about him, or a sentiment rather. “If Datsyuk had played for any other team, he’d have scored 150 pts a year”. Instead, he played a full team game, and was rewarded with 2 Stanley Cups and 4 consecutive Lady Byng trophies, which are awarded to the "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability".
He was a pleasure to watch, and I feel spoiled that I got to watch him in person for over a decade in Detroit.

A surprising thing about Datsyuk, was that he was drafted 171st overall. The fact that he even put on a pair of skates and saw any ice time in an NHL game is surprising, but that he ended up playing the better part of a 1000 games, and averaging around a point per game is incredible.

No one has ever to my eye anyway been on his level . Some come close but none as gifted in the over all just quick thinking uncanny things he could do with a puck . He could just make things happen out of nowhere. Life long never die Red Wings fan here . I’ve seen some of the best to ever play the game and as I said for my money no one was as gifted a player with the puck on their stick as pavel . If he didn’t want to be the complete package and play excellent defense he could have put up insane points totals. In his prime there was no one in the world I’d pick above him to have on my team .

As a lifelong Red Wings fan Datsyuk just has to be my favorite player of all time. The Magic Man was just that....MAGIC. What he did with the puck was almost as special as what he did without the puck. What I mean by that is that he was always in the right position, he defended, he assisted....he just did it ALL! The wings went WAY down hill after he retired. Just amazing! ALSO....thank GOD for instant replay because most of the time you see something happen and are just like WTF did he just do? I live in Michigan and I was 13 when Detroit drafted Pavel Datsyuk. I watched many, many games with Pavvy. It got to a point where you stop watching the puck when he is on the ice and just watch him. When the play was away from him, he would just gently glide around. Once the puck got near him he jumped into action, always with a move you didn't expect. He won the Lady Byng trophy four years in a row.

Human highlight reel, one of the best two-way players of all time (offense+defense), likely the best puck thief of all time, drafted to the nhl in the 6th round at #171, so he's one of the best draft steals of all time... and he basically won it all... 2 Stanley Cups (NHL championship), world junior gold, olympic gold, world championship... member of the 'triple gold club' (Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold, World Championship)... He had four consecutive seasons of 87, 87, 97 and 97 points early in his NHL career, but never had more than 70 again, so he's not among the top scorers of all time, but given how insanely good he was in both directions, one can easily make the argument that he's one of the best players the game has ever seen. Certainly one of the most talented!

He’s not the best at one specific thing, but he is the most complete hockey player you’ll ever see. Fans of other teams agree with that assessment as well. Pavel Datsyuk was definitely one of the very best all-around hockey players in history because he was not great just offensively but also defensively. He wasn't necessarily the great offensive threat that guys like Crosby or Ovechkin were, but he was always on the ice late in the game when the game was on the line whether protecting a 1 goal lead or trying to tie up the game. He was a guy the coach trusted in crunch time in all situations. He was a way better defensive player than Crosby or Ovechkin. But his stickhandling was certainly one of the best in history. He was often called the Magic Man for the way he could befuddle the other team's defenders...

Datsyuk invented the drag flip shot... which is the shot you see where he pulls it back pretends to wrist shot it (which if he did wrist shot it, it's a regular Drag shot) but instead of wrist shooting it he flips the puck upwards instead and uses the skating momentum to put it in. Pretty much if you create something new in hockey you're something else entirely... like Gretsky invented the no look pass (where you see your team mates in the reflection of the glass and use that to pass to them) which is now employed by every player or Kucherov with his phantom deke or Mike Legg's Michigan goal

Datsyuk was the best hockey player in the world in 2007-2009. Elite two-way, all around player and the best stickhandler in hockey history. I watched some old World Cup 2004 games and he could deke Canadas and USAs top five like it was regular stuff. Over the years he became my favorite ever player. And by the way as a teenager he was equally good in hockey and soccer, but choosed to become pro as a hockey player.

To answer your question on if he played soccer/is he good at soccer: YES he was arguably even better at it when he was drafted, but he wanted to play hockey. And the other question about watching him: if he was on the ice you watched number 13 in red at all times even if he didn't have the puck, ESPECIALLY if he didn't have the puck at times. Something magical was happening almost every shift and you did NOT want to miss it.

I would say Gordi Howe is still the greatest Hockey Player of all time (namesake to the Gordi Howe Hat Trick: 1 Goal 1 Assist 1 Fight). Pavel Datsyuk is not the highest scoring player for the Detroit Red Wings. He might not even be a top-5 player in the teams history. But he will be the guy who inhabits the highlight reel for a team that had existed for 75 years before Datsyuk ever played a game for the team. An absolute magician with the puck, he was a highlight reel on the worst of days.

Great to see these videos. Datsyuk was amazing all around the ice.
There is a video about "Sidney Crosby puck protection" or something like that. That is worth checking out, quite jaw dropping how he buys time for his teammates with his exceptional ability to hang on to the puck while he has a couple of defenders pressuring him 👌

You’re very intuitive for someone without a trained hockey eye. Ronaldinho is a perfect comparison for a football lover.
And his point totals are nowhere near what they could’ve been if playing defense wasn’t so organically important to him. He also retired from the NHL to play his last years in Russia. He was capable of staggering numbers if that was, what thankfully wasn’t, a priority.

But I don't there is a better stickhandling player in the history of the game and one smooth skater. Fantastic defensive player as well.

6:10 “What was his scoring record overall?”
Likely not even in the top 100; though not for lack of skill.
    1. A decent chunk of his career overlapped the “dead puck” era (plus the lockout in ‘04-05), when scoring opportunities were harder to come by.
    2. He played on very good teams that “rolled four lines” (i.e., all four forward lines get a substantial share of ice time). As a comparison:
Conor McDavid: 21-22 minutes overall; 30 seconds of which is killing penalties.
Datsyuk: 16-17 minutes overall; 3-4 minutes of which is killing penalties.
    3. He was probably the best two-way player of his era, meaning he played a lot of shifts against the other teams’ top players. So, while his overall scoring numbers aren’t fantastic, his +/- (a team's total even-strength scoring versus their opponent's when the a player is in the game), time of possession, takeaways vs. giveaway differential turnovers are in another world.
In other words, despite not being a Pts. machine, at least a handful of coaches would pick Datsyuk over Crosby, Ovechkin, or McDavid.

Pavel Datsyuk was the magic man and was the best at stealing pucks from the other team for sure, but if you haven’t watched the Russian five that’s something you want to look into. It was never five more cohesive players on a team. All of them from Russia and how the Red Wings actually got them is a story in its self. You owe it to yourself if you haven’t seen it to watch it

Weird this compilation didn't have his shootout vs Vokoun and Niemi. Even his breakaway against Turco wasn't in there. Really weird. Anyway ! As a Montreal Canadiens fan, I didn't care : I always was watching the most I could of the Red Wings when he was still in the NHL. That's the thing : unpredictible. Such the gem to see live. The only way to react to him is to shook my head from left to right, and right to left. He was unique. Nowadays, if we only talk about in game puck handler, I'd say only McDavid is creating "awe moments" as Datsyuk was creating. In my opinion only guys ! Don't come at me saying this one or this one : I know them already. Anyway. Pavel Datsyuk always been a favorite of mine. Class act, down to earth and one of the GOAT, in my opinion.
He certainly put up great numbers, but not even a ppg (1pt/game) average. Didn't reach 1000 games. He was more of a team type of guy. Yes, he had these flashes, but in the late 90s, earlier 2000s the game was different : less open than today. In fact, there was a rule that lasted until 2005, and its removal was one of the reasons why the game opened up that much (if you want to check it out, it is called as the 2 line rule).
