- In this casual video, I show you around my home studio and creative recording space. A home studio should be functional AND inspiring. Here are a few tips to get the most out of your small creative recording space from a bass player's perspective.

Check out my good friend @RhettShull's performance video we shot at UA featuring yours truly and some incredibly talented friends. I had SO much fun being a part of this:
• Fleetwood Mac - Dreams...
The video in the background of this video (lofi LOTR. Yes, I am a nerd):
• Lord of The Rings but ...
Philip, you are the #1 bass player that I follow on social media to learn stuff about. Your style of bass playing and your philosophy about music and tone are exactly right up my alley. I am not into flashy, insane bass playing, I play in a church, mostly modem CCM stuff, and I can tell you that I have almost 20 years playing the bass on and off, but since covid, I dedicated myself to it as my #1 instrument and haven't put it down. My goal is to one day do pro gigs, mostly live but also studio. I got the chops but I am a small town musician, but definitely your content has encouraged me to not give up on music and to have fun on bass!
I would like to second that 100%! Very grateful to have found Philip and his channel.
Thank you so much for these kind words. I am happy to have you here. Thanks for being a part of the channel!

This! 👏
Hey, Phil! Great video as always. I think your CRT TV has a high pitch squeal, because throughout the video, playing it in my car there was a high frequency buzz. I know there is some software to take out that high frequency buzz from recordings, and I think that would be great for when you record in your room with the CRT.
Yeah, I was actually wondering if having a CRT in recording place is actually a good idea :D
Hi all! I usually low pas the mic on my camera but forgot. TV is off during tracking. Good to know your hearing is still good! Thanks for watching ⚡️
Man, i can actually hear a frecuency coming out of that giant tv, its crazy
Love to see a Kasleder Jellyfish and albatross on that shelf. I love Kasleder so much
Looks great! I’d love a video on how you’re using the HX Stomp. As a fellow “old school” bassist who picked up a stomp last year I’m always curious how more other traditional bassists are using it.
I appreciate the run down of how you have your space set up. I recently re-orged my area downstairs. The big shifts were moving the digital piano to the opposite side of the room, which allowed me to shift my desk directly opposite it (rather than perpendicular to it). This opened up a lot more space in the room and allowed better placement for my studio monitors (I recently got a set of HS5s to replace the poor Presonus ones I'd been using for far too long). It also allowed me to shift my pedal board into a closer position for when I'm at my desk. My 4x10 and 1x15 are still in the garage just because I use them so rarely at this point.
My wall hangers are actually in the hallway leading into the basement area. I should probably see if I have wall space in the main room for hangers for the three that generally sit in here (at the moment, it's three Fender P-Basses, one of which is tuned BEAD). Although I do like the floor stands for them because they allow me to shift them around near my desk to have what I'm actively using in a closer position.
I'm hoping in a lot of ways it'll encourage me to get back to spending more time with it because other things have pushed their way in and distracted me.
Thanks for the tour Philip!! Awesome space
Thanks for watching!
Moog Prodigy! Wow. I used to play one live in the late 80s.
Thank you for jogging those memories. It had fantastic brass and bass sounds on that beast. A challenge to change settings on the fly though.
My creative area only has one bass in it at the moment, the others are packed away ready for gigging. No bass traps as yet, but strategically placed acoustic panels. The only Apollo I have is a Rega one!
Great video.
Love my UA volt 276. My first interface-bought it out of necessity of taking zoom guitar lessons, and now I use it for 90% of my playing at home.
Mr Conrad thank you so much your content so informative really by far some of the best bass videos on UA-cam keep em coming
Cool space! It looks really cozy and inspiring.
Always love your bass content. Never stop creating the things you want to create!
Hi @philipconrad thanks for sharing your beautiful lo-fi fireplace with us. My home studio needed it too! Keep the nerd stuff coming!
Just bought a new house. Saving this video for reference as I build out my mancave/jam room!
(5:10) Fleetwood Mac's Rumours looking ass 💀💀💀
(great vid btw i wish i had a place like that with all those basses)
Cool space. Careful The speaker magnets can destroy the tv image. If it’s an older one. I zapped a couple 😂😂
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day phillip ❤😊
The Sony Triniton is the killer. So many vibes!
On your first Bass Studio tour, you mentioned you wanted to know whether we, your viewers, consider this channel to be a bass channel, and a music channel. This is my favorite musician's channel on UA-cam, bar none. Rock on 🤘
Thank you so much! I’m so happy to have you here ⚡️
This is so cool, thank you for sharing it. I should probably do this with my creative space... might be a fun idea.
The merch is so rad!
Thanks dude!
This really inspired me to find more solutions in my own 9 m^2 (96.87 sq. ft) room. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing the video man! A really inspiration! 🙌👏
The room definitely sounds tight...cool bass traps idea
Enjoyed the tour! I was surprised to hear you swapped out your Mustang pickups. I remember you liked the Seymour Duncans in a previous video. I'm interested in the difference and why you felt the need for a change. thanks
Cool vid, and yes, make the place your own, comfy and functional so you really really like to stay and can let creativity flow ❤
I also have the luxury of an own room, everything set right and handy so I just have to switch on and grab my bass.
Btw I also love my Apollo 4 interface and my Yamaha monitors, best I've ever had 👍
Would love to see how you use the stomp as a bass player
Nice Space, it’s good to have a creative space outlet. Yeah keeping your space organized is a good idea. I just need to find a way to do it 😂. I have a few questions. When showing your pedals I saw Purple knobs with what looked like an aluminum enclosure, was that the Street Driver 48? If so, will there be a demo video? If not, what was that? Finally have you made a video shooting out the 1176 pedal Vs the Volt 1176 preamp. I wonder if there are any tonal differences or features between the two? Great video as always.
You can use UA plugins with any interface now
I'm assuming what we are hearing is maybe a shotgun mic on the camera?
Whatever the mic used you certainly have that little square box room nicely under control because the audio on this sounds quite decent.
This was fun. Thanks for the tour.
Is a great philosophy: make a space yours. We should enjoy being in "the space" that we create. It's a process of cultivating an inspiring space... And then keeping it clean (the hardest part).
Difficult for me too. Thanks for watching!
Love it all! I've got a similar setup at home and am totally aligned with the idea that even the little random touches make a difference in how you experience making music!
Just a more technical question - I recently picked up the BassRig supervintage and I'm finding that I really can't dial out the scoopy SVT thing (or maybe not a true scoop, but just to much "dynamic clarity") so i feel like i lose the thickness of my low mids in the attack, and a lot more of the crispy edges come out instead. Have you found a sweet spot for dialing that out? I'm considering throwing a B7k, DCX or maybe CAPO n front of it to try and tone shift a little bit before hand... but i'm also not wanting to overthink anything. The cab sim really is special (and i'm not super interested in the Fender cabs). I think overall - i wish I could more easily dial in a b-15 style tone and attack versus just being hard-pegged into the SVT fridge thing. Thoughts? I'm running a 70's Pbass
Awesome studio!
Absolutely love your content, but that high pitched ringing in the video is brutal!
I forgot to low pass it like I usually do. CRTVs have that sound, but most that can remember the TVS it can’t hear it any more. Take it as a sign your hearing is very good. Thanks for watching!
Yooooo I did my bachelors in marine biology and was 100% my influence spurred by the Life Aquatic that pushed me down that rabbit hole ahaha
Cool space.
Thanks dude!
Would love to hear your thoughts on the Squier paranormal rascal bass as I’m considering buying that or possibly the Squier cv 60’s mustang
Love this. I'm building a bass cave not far from you in Atlanta (near Emory).
Awesome! Good luck
Great video, I personally own a lot of gear that I’ve collected over the past two decades. Unfortunately I don’t have a space.
Like the setup. Where's your flip-top hiding?
Don’t worry! It’s still there hiding under the wooden table ready to go!
Nice setup. I think small can be useful for writing, because if organised properly like that, everything is in quick reach from one central seating position. Have a question for you, I think you have an Ampeg V-4b. I'm a guitarist learning bass. Starting on a Squier CV Mustang, which I like (my hands aren't particularly big). The amp I use is an Ampeg Micro-VR with the SVT210AV. I like the amp, especially the cab. But, it's pretty neutral. I'm thinking of maybe saving up for an Ampeg V4-b, to use for recording, and for band practice (would keep Micro-VR for backup/reinforcement). I see you've used them, and know how they compare. Would you recommend the V-4b, or steer toward the Venture - for dual recording/practice? Also, ever tried a V4 with a guitar? I'm curious, would be nice to have a hella loud 100w in my guitar amp arsenal (have Marshall ST-20h JTM and Vox AC30).
Yo just a heads up, there is a super harsh frequency way up there in all the audio for this tour. You may have some dogs freaking out if you play this through speakers. And headphone listeners who still have their top end hearing may wanna reconsider lol
How do small home studio owners dodge hum from their electronics? My pickups are picking up interference really bad and I can’t get far enough away to get it quiet.
There’s a high pitched sound throughout the whole video
I forgot to low pass it like I usually do. CRTVs have that sound, but most that can remember the TVS can’t hear it any more. Take it as a sign your hearing is very good. Thanks for watching!
What are you using to play UA-cam on the TV? Thought about doing a setup like this to play my switch but all the converters I saw seemed to squish the 16:9 image into full screen whereas yours doesn’t seem to be doing that
what is the little stand/drawer storage thing your monitor is resting on?
cool!
"I'm not an acoustic scientist; I'm a bass player." -Philip Conrad
You know what would make that space even better?!?!? A custom homemade Fenderbird bass!! 😤(don't remember what day of asking for one I'm on)
I think 4 or 5 😂
After taking the bronco and swapping out the pickup and giving the neck some love would you suggest I put fralins in my squire jbass or save up for a higher end bass?
If you like the way the squier feels/plays, then upgrade the pickups 🤘
What Mac mini are you running
No more Nash J? Cool place!
You don't find a need for a Jazz bass?
Yes, mine was on the other wall and I forgot to include it. Love my jazz!
Where’s the Daphne blue jazz bass
we need more of the cat and the dog
The whale is clearly named Moby Pick.
Theramin video please.
you have a voice for childrens audio books
Thank you?
Philip, love the content, but, REALLY love the Ned Flanders vibe you have going with the porn 'stache.
Thanks!
That old tv has a lot of radiation
That poor jazz bass on the other wall only got a half second of screen time...
I know! Sorry. It’s got a lot of screen time on my Jazz vs Precision video if you want to hear it.
😂😂lol
Dude, way way past time to change the profile pic
😂
Am i the only one who thinks the worst thing bout the vid is the moustache
The moustache is cool.
