For me, Futurama is the best cartoon show ever. Rick and Morty is a close second. Oh, and it is from 1999 (until 2013). And now they are coming back again!

Man, regardless of the fact y’all “missed out” on this show, be happy you’re watching it PERIOD. Such a great show. Brings the laughs, and is great for anyone who loves (or even hates) sci-fi… And even the show is pretty absurd in premise and execution, unlike a lot of its contemporaries, the show also NEVER hesitates to hit you in the feels every so often. Futurama first ran on Fox from 1999 to 2003. Then Comedy Central ran new episode from 2008 to 2013. Today I found out that new episodes will air on Hulu starting next year. Oh well, I don’t have Hulu.
I love this series to bits, and I'm super excited to go back on this journey with you two. The joke about Fry doing all this work just to end up back as a delivery boy is funny, but also pretty pointed. Yeah, going to Space is a cool perk, but I think it was more about having the ability to CHOOSE. He wasn't given a choice in the beginning, no free will at all. Just a quick pick and you're stuck for life. At the end, however, he gets to make his own decision. His fate is in his own hands - something Fry even mentions in the very episode. It's a great start to an amazing series.
Futurama had a few seasons, then was cancelled. Had a few movies, which are now organized as as their own "seasons" then was picked up again by a different network and had another run then was cancelled again. You're actually pick it up at a great time as the show was very recently announced to be returning with a full on revival just this year. For those of us in the Futurama fandom this show has literally never left our rotation of shows we have just running in the background. One fun fact I'd like to share is that this show had multiple people working on it that had PhDs in various sciences, making them the most overly educated group of cartoon writers even to be assembled.
Wait what movies do I need to check out? I loved this show when I was younger and watched all the episodes but it was kinda before streaming and I didn't realize there were movies.
@@hiddenInsight486 Futurama, AFAIK, is the only animated series (and probably the only TV series) to have a mathematical hypothesis named for it, as it was developed to answer a question posed by one of the episodes (the one with the mind-switching). Specifically, IIRC, it was "given a mind-switching machine and the restriction that the same two people can only exchange minds once, what is the minimum number of swaps required to get X number of people's minds back into their original bodies from Y starting state?". Amusingly, one of the features on the DVD box set for the season in question was the writers sitting in an auditorium as a speaker announces, "We have a special treat for you; a MATH LECTURE!", to thunderous cheers. They then proceeded to give the entire lecture explaining the hypothesis. Interesting stuff!
@@matthewzeller5026 There's 4 movies with a narrative order; Bender's Big Score, The Beast with a Billion Backs, Bender's Game, and Into the Wild Green Yonder. Fellow Canadian, I'm not too sure about animated shows but one of my all time favourite hidden gems of Canadian TV is "Todd and the Book of Pure Evil" It's hilarious and unlike anything else. Only 2 seasons but they got an animated movie! And there's two absolute banger musical episodes, one for each season. Amazing show, especially if you like rock/metal or stoner comedy. And Letterkenny is an amazing current one. Corner Gas of course is a classic, with its own animated season.
I'm so excited for you two. Futurama is one of my favorite all time shows. I recommend watching with audio commentary on your own some time. It's always great and sometimes, when voice actors are taking part, they'll do parts of the commentary in character.
It's coming back this year. With the entire staff. Creators, writers and cast. Wait until you guys get into later seasons. Futurama is absolute top tier.
So I was actually checking for Futurama reactions on a whim a few months ago and there aren't many people doing it. There's a couple good reactors but uploads can be slow sometimes. Futurama came out when I was about 10. I thought it was interesting, but remember people didn't seem to like it all that much. Then as an adult it was airing on [AS] and I LOVED it. They got picked up for more seasons and I was in heaven. This show has literally been around for 2/3 of my life.
This is honestly the only show on Comedy Central I actually was there for and when I used Netflix just to binge it, it is still as good as the first time and never gets old.
I hold a hope that the Futurama Revival will be just as good as the was back when it came back in the 2010's and now that John DiMaggio is confirmed to return this vendor we got the entire crew back so it's guaranteed to be funny you're also good with characters and stories
There are also some amazing plot arc in this show, with clues in this first episode that don’t pay off for several seasons. Tremendously smart writing throughout.
Popping back in almost a week after this vid dropped to sincerely thank you for starting this. I started rewatching Futurama again and it holds up so, so well. You're going to have an amazing time - especially considering JV's love of science fiction. Hilarious fro start to finish, some great thinkers, and some of the best tear jerkers in television. Can't wait for you to see more.
While the 4 characters introduced here are the main ones, the rest of the supporting cast is introduced in episode 2, giving the series about 7 regulars.
On the topic of canadian animations of this style: I think there was a show called "Fugget about it" or something. Italian mob family moves to Vancouver or something like that.
My favorite animated show for sure. Use to throw it on before bed and pass out it was just such a comfort show. So many jokes I didn’t really notice first watch. But have now seen the episodes so many times. Very excited for the HULU reboot.

The animated show about a guy and a girl might be Gravity Falls. That's a good show. One thing about Futurama that a lot of people probably miss (I know I did when it first came out) is that many of the writers were mathematicians and there are a lot of subtle math and science-related jokes and references. There's also an alien written language that really translates to English. If you decode the alphabet you can read things like signs and graffiti in the background.
Many times in my life when asked what is your favorite show of all time Futurama has been my answer. I have seen the first five seasons countless times and along with the first 10 seasons of The Simpsons, it's the "comfort food" of TV for me. Long before Rick and Morty this show was doing obscure math and physics jokes layers deep. So many good characters, so many still-relevant jokes and I would say one of the top-10 tearful moments in written TV history.
Futurama and Bob's Burgers are actually my favorite adult shows! Adult humor without going for offensive stereotypes and crap all the time (especially Bob's Burgers)!!
6:50- they never cleared the EPA regulations or something; but Futurama predicted the 2008 financial crisis before 9-11 happened. Once you're done with the series and get to the movies they made right before getting "uncancelled" Bender's Big Score is a masterpiece of a plot; but there's so many references to various episodes before it (for instance you finally get to see the alien ships from while he was frozen. Yeah; it's a time travel movie) the other two movies they made between were good as well; but they definitely blew their load on the first one
Futurama is a classic and it only gets better as they build up the world and characters, also the movies are definitely worth sprinkling in with the series reactions
Futurama is one of the best TV comedies of all time! The show only gets funnier, stranger, and more outrageous from here. And you’re so right about the set up. You can’t even begin to imagine the way the universe of this show and the style of storytelling and comedy open up as the series moves on. Solid and seriously engaging science fiction ideas and writing as well. Recommendation of two brilliant and classic American animated comedies. You want to see a truly “American” animated show. You got to do “King of the Hill” The show first aired in 1997 Created by Mike Judge. Creator of Beavis and Buthead as well as the HBO series Silicon Valley. He also wrote and directed the comedy films, Office Space and Idiocrocy. And the other classic American animated comedy you got to see. “Bojack Horseman” A completely blind reaction will be best and definitely a lot more amusing.
I’ve loved this show since I caught the premier in 8th grade. It’s easily one of the best and smartest shows I’ve seen and I cannot sing it’s praises enough.
Maybe just to watch personally "Community" is one of the most underrated Sitcoms ever made. Season 1 starts fine, after a few episode they find there pace and right up to the end of season 3 every episode is hilarious and rewatchable. The Russo's who Made a bunch of the good Marvel marvel movies directed about 22 episodes of it and it was why they got hired by Marvel. Some say "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Community episode (season 2, episode 14)" is the best one to start with just to see if the comedy style is to your taste and as a character reintroduction episode, then if you like it go back and start the series.
Futurama is one of the infamous 3 F's of Fox: Futurama, Family Guy, Firefly. All 3 cancelled by Fox. All 3 beloved by fans. All 3 brought back to life by fans. Futurama and Family Guy both returned to series and Firefly went on to become a wide release movie (and possibly soon a return to series from Disney).
Soooo the show was cancelled twice. As you go through the seasons you'll see a sudden up tick in animation quality, that is the first time it was brought back (at that time by Cartoon Network I believe). It was canceled a 2nd time in 2013 I think but Hulu is bringing it back again and everyone has signed back on to do it
You should also check out Disenchantment. It's also by Matt Groening but it's an on going series on Netflix rather than self-contained episodes. Currently in season 4.
The Futurama reboot seems to be going ahead. The voice actor for Bender was holding out for better contracts for the entire cast, like the absolute boss that he is. Bender sez: "Solidarity Forever!". The interesting thing about Family Guy was that it was the first show brought back by DVD sales driven by Internet word-of-mouth and P2P sharing. Early 2000s started to see sufficient bandwidth and file-format density to enable widespread sharing of videos.
Futurama is home to one of the most sad/depressing episodes of an animated series ever. Titled “Jurassic Bark” and it’s season 4 or 5 depending on what list you’re looking at.
Futurama is always a great sci-fi adult cartoon with some things in it that make you think while laughing. The characters are somewhat self serving but lovable in their own right. Very creative show with lots of campy future predictions connect to present activities and items. My favorite episode is "The Late Philip J. Fry" which toys with the ideas regarding the beginning of our universe. Highly recommend Futurama.
Welcome to Futurama!! I like the Simpsons & Family Guy, South Park was ok, but LOVE this show! - the sci-fi nerd in me got a cartoon show to keep him happy! 🤣 Being sci-fi the story possibilities were endless & it was always consistently great, consistently funny, & often managed to catch you in the feels too: it's a bloody fantastic show!!- it's criminal it got cancelled once yet alone several times!! (I lost count to be honest!). Looking forward to seeing it again through your eyes! 😄😄
The show ran for 4 seasons on Fox. Reruns on adult swim proved it was viable. So they produced 4 movies that have since been chopped up into a season. It returned on comedy central. I believe for 2 seasons.. then was unexpectedly renewed for a third. So they've had 4 endings. About a month ago it was revealed Hulu is resurrecting the series again I believe some time in 2023.
Dick Clark died about 10 years ago, April 18, 2012. Futurama is great with tons of spoofs of current things but done in clever ways quite different from The Simpsons. As others have mentioned here, although it is definitely a comedy, there are some genuine bittersweet moments that will make you cry in the series, usually having to do with Fry and Leela's relationship.
Futurama is one of my favorite shows of all time. The first 5 seasons are awesome and I have watched them all too many times that I can't even say. It was canceled and brought back to do 4 movies when all said and done (I forgot by who). The 4 movies are called season 6 officially now. After the movies it was brought back in show form by Cartoon Network for 4 more seasons. These 4 seasons have some great episodes and some I really never watch again, which is not something I say about the original 5 seasons. No matter what I hope you guys enjoy watching it!
Hell yeah. FUTURAMA!!! haha this show is incredible. Specifically the first 4 seasons. It ended in a nice way but then they came back the same way Family Guy came back. The first few episodes are, while still great, were still trying to get their footing. It is one of the smartest shows because it had actual scientists and smart people writing for it. In my opinion the only smart show after futurama was Rick in Morty. Please continue its filled with tons of stupid and incredibly smart jokes. Also fun fact Billy West (the voice of Fry (who also did Stimpy from Ren and Stimpy)) voices a lot of characters in this show. (He is Professor Farnsworth also) he is sort of like "Dan Castellaneta" of this series as oppossed to the simpsons. (Dan on the simpsons voices Homer, Moe, Barney, squeaky voiced teenager and about (last time I checked) around 70ish different voices))
Like Family Guy, Futurama was cancelled by FOX, but made a fortune on DVD release. It was brought back on SciFi IIRC, cancelled again, then 3 direct to DVD movies were released. Another season was made by chopping the movies into half hour episodes. Then it was renewed again for a season or two, then cancelled again. They've just announced another 20 episodes will be in production for Netflix IIRC. Each time it was cancelled a decent ending episode was made. Another interesting fact is the writing room had more PhDs in it than many think tanks. Every time you see a board full of equations it was all valid mathematical theory, and there was one episode that was so convoluted that a writer spent his weekend creating a mathematical proof to validate the episode. Two separate written languages were created for fans to decode, since the writers saw what happened in Star Trek fandom with Klingonese.
Futurama is a genuine classic. Starts well, stays well, ends well. Tons of classic pop culture in it too. Hope you do the entire series.
It isn't even possible for it to fall into the _category_ of "classic".

Futurama was aired march 28 1999
Futurama is one of the best TV comedies of all time!
The show only gets funnier, stranger, and more outrageous from here.
And you’re so right about the set up. You can’t even begin to imagine the way the universe of this show and the style of storytelling and comedy open up as the series moves on.
Solid and seriously engaging science fiction ideas and writing as well.
Recommendation of two brilliant and classic American animated comedies.
You want to see a truly “American” animated show. You got to do
“King of the Hill”
The show first aired in 1997
Created by Mike Judge. Creator of Beavis and Buthead as well as the HBO series Silicon Valley.
He also wrote and directed the comedy films, Office Space and Idiocrocy.
And the other classic American animated comedy you got to see.
“Bojack Horseman”
A completely blind reaction will be best and definitely a lot more amusing.
I’ve loved this show since I caught the premier in 8th grade. It’s easily one of the best and smartest shows I’ve seen and I cannot sing it’s praises enough.
This is one of my favourite shows, I started watching when i was way to young but still love it.
this is one of the best shows ever..
I remember watching it when it first aired, this show was way ahead of it's time, both literally and figuratively...
I love that you guys are doing this show. ITs a classic. And amazing!
Don't worry. 1999 was only 13 years ago. Anybody who says otherwise is in denial. Right?
Dick Clark passed in 2012. Ryan Seacrest does it now.
Nixon in 94
The best-animated TV show of all time.
...no, guys. Dick Clark died in 2012. The New Year's show is still named after him, but it's hosted by Ryan Seacrest now.
It was canceled a 2nd time in 2013 I think but Hulu is bringing it back again and everyone has signed back on to do it
Bring it back!
You guys are gonna love the entire series!

I know there are a lot of animated shows that were made in Canada for the US, but not sure about any that take place in Canada.
Upcoming Scott Pilgrim anime series.
The newest show from Matt Groening is Disenchantment on Netflix. They've just announced that Futurama will be returning for a new season.
You guys should also react to Archer that show is really hilarious and awesome
It's funny to hear how Bender and the Professor's voices have changed over the years (for the better I might add).
Being sci-fi the story possibilities were endless & it was always consistently great, consistently funny, & often managed to catch you in the feels too: it's a bloody fantastic show!!- it's criminal it got cancelled once yet alone several times!!
Canadian cartoon from around this time: Clone High, debuted 2002, starring many of the actors who would go on to roles in Scrubs.
The fact that the shadow was always there is proof that they've thought this show through to the end, which was the most thought through
Hell yeah. FUTURAMA!!! haha this show is incredible.
I’m 26 and all my siblings had watched this series. My eldest sister even has the Planet Express ship as a tattoo
Haven't even seen the video yet and I've subscribed because of the title. The show is that good.
