    49ers in 1988 started the season 5-5 and the season 10-6 and SUPER BOWL champions. It's not how you start, it's how you finish.

    • @madrecka

      No they started 6-5 as they were 6-4 before losing to the Raiders 9-3 in week 11.

      @@madreckaYep, Rice was PI on the last drive vs the Raiders, and was a no call. This team was up and down with too many close losses. They were 6-5 heading into that MNF game against the defending Super Bowl Champion Washington Redskins. The rest is history as they dominated pro football from that point on until the NFC Championship (1990 season) game against the NY Giants.

      @@SuperFuck Yes sir. You're correct. That 1990 NFC Title game was painful at the end with Montana being knocked out and Craig fumbling

      Very painful, and not even the first time either. Bill Belichick defenses almost ended Joe Montana’s career twice. The last 14 quarters of playoff ball, Joe Montana vs Bill Belichick NY Giants defenses, Montana was only able to get one TD and that’s when Everson Walls gambled. It went like this (as you already know), 1984 second half was zero points in a 21-10 win, 1985 was a 17-3 loss, 1986 was a 49-3 loss, and 1990 was a 15-13 loss. The main reason Tom Brady was great is he practiced everyday vs Bill Belichick defenses. No Belichick and the 49ers have another ring or two.

      @@SuperFuck Yea you could say that Belichick figured out the West Coast offense by 1985 against SF in the NFC Wild Card. Yea that 1986 NFC Divisional Burt almost killed Montana on their way to win 49-3.
      I do remember the 1988 & 1989 Regular Seasons where Montana burned the Giants D.

      Wrong!
      Lon Simmons & his microphone were the best announcing "team" ever.
      And that's for both Forty Niner and Giant's games.
      He was so great he didn't need some Has Been sitting next chair over incessantly running his gob about things like how much turkey the offensive linemen ate.

      @thomasoaxaca3379
      Of course, I recognize Simmons' signature call without even thinking, but until looking it up just now, I always associated it with Mays' career.
      Thanks for providing the impetus for the research.
      I learned that McCovey was evidently one of Lon's favorite people.
      I also didn't remember that in 1989, Lon called games for both the Champion Forty Niners (of course!) but the Champion Oakland A's too.
      That was Lon for me, having a transistor/earphone at Candlestick and listening to him at home on my stereo and turning my television's volume knob completely off, same as a lot of the Faithful did.
