- Is this too paranoid…? 😧
Growing up in Florida we had metal window covers for hurricanes, something like this would be way better if it were strong enough 💪
It would even make the Prepper side of me feel all warm and toasty inside ☺️
What do you think of something like this? Would it be
awesome on your new build?
✍️ I’m going to add this to my Home Building Checklist

I mean...that's normal in Germany. I wish we had them in the US. They were the best thing ever when I had to work night shift. Two closed positions...one let in some light, the other was complete blackout.
Came to say this
The Wife wanted them when we were stationed over in Germany. If I had the money I would purchase them for my home.
Same. I work 12 hr nights. I have black plastic on my bedroom windows now. Tried a removable tint but it wouldn’t stay on. Blackout curtains let light out at the top.
@@Eric-iv7cg We didn't have them on post, but the overflow housing off post had them. They were fantastic.
germans will do anything to not install AC 😂
Helps keep heat from entering the home too. More energy efficient in summer time and trying to keep it cool
And in colder climates or in winter during the night they can actually help keep the warmth inside as well as an additional layer of insulation
I was thinking that, or they are some sort of hurricane shutters.
@@Darbman62 in metall they might work as light hurricane shutters, if anchored to the wall properly. More as a protectiuon against flying debris. But the ones common in Europe using to keep the heatout or in, depending on time of the year are mostly made from vinyl, although aluminium is not uncommon, but not the majority. Hurricane force winds might just rip those out of their tracks.
I have seen hurricane shutters build that way in florida, they are usually (at least the ones I know, which may be a very limited set of options) were made from steel and in comparison the tracks have been a lot wider and had way more overlap (like the slats sticking in the steel tracks about 3 inches, compared to about half an inch to an inch we use here in plastic tracks or guide rails.)
That's standard in a lot of european countries, not because of break ins (although they do add a minor hindrance to any intruders). When closed, it gets fully dark, not a single ray of light comes through, they help keep your home cooler in the summer, and also add a layer of insulation in the winter by adding an extra layer of immobile air in front of your windows and preventing infrared radiation from exiting through your windows. They also add a little acoustic insulation. They're completely worth the expense
I never understood why these aren’t more common in the states
Winter storms would destroy these in half the states, tornadoes would rip them off and turn them into deadly hazards in a lot of others. Should be all over the south though
@@Sb_747 if they are good enough for Europe then they are good enough in the states. I lived in Germany for about 5 years and I live in the northeast part of the states. The winters are basically the same.
It's cause we like the illusion of safety and"not needing it"
@@Sb_747that's not true. Those things are heavy. If a storm is strong enough to rip these out, you have other problems. Those are standard in europe and if the tornado didn't destroy a home they didn't destroy those.
What happens when the intruder breaches through the 1/4” drywall?
They get some new holes in their body
First off the most common drywall used is 1/2”… second, did you account for the exterior wall material or the framing between the two? Did you figure you would do it with your head like the kool aid man because in America we got freedom fries for any situation.
I miss these from Germany. Needs to become a thing in the states.
Everywhere in Italy we have these. If you have automatic shutters you can schedule them to open/close with sunrise/sunset
These have been in Australia for decades, I used to have them at my old house. Great for security and insulation
I'd like to see the outside to see where the shutters are stored before I make a decision. That said... could be useful for hurricanes, hail storms, the Purge, zombie apocalypse, etc.
this is normal in germany, almost all houses have this and it's not really visible from the outside, just a small box above the window
Many houses in Florida has these for hurricanes
@@electricheartpony My father-in-law lives in SW Florida and has been talking about getting them for years. Sort of why I'm curious, because I've never noticed them on anyone's houses.
Big metal box above the outside window.
@@Gunter_Custom ir's not big
Hurricane shutters are great apocalypse prep as well as hurricane prep 😅
i was showing my wife vids like this. I think every house should have them for all main opening and windows
Literally the best thing you can ever put on your window I have it for my room it’s amazing
Good for hurricanes if they're outside.
had these in our airbnb in Italy pretty common in Europe
The singing bowls in my country takes coins😅
I've seen these before. I forget which European country they are from but I do know they are really popular. Only difference is you pull a string you don't wind it. But they are great at blocking out light better than any black out curtains.
Germany blackout curtains
@@MsJbaby32 germany 😊🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪
Belgium has them too
This with a turn wheel isn't necessary. You can just pull the strap. Or you can have an electronic system.
Great for doorways but I’d rather not have a crank box next to my window. Drapes will do.
There's an unobtrusive pull system flush with the wall.
😂😂 okay. So it seems I look down my house every evening and automatically when sun shines on it. Nice. My house is one huge safe room 🤦♂️
Standard in europe, but its hard to isolate so its becoming less common
Doubles as a radiant barrier
Hurricane shutters. They're all over the place in Florida
How do they look from outside?
These are just blinds in between two panes of glass and offer no protection. Am I correct?
No, you are incorrect. Glass wouldn't roll up above the window. All metal with maybe some type of insulation, I believe.
You are very wrong. They are in front of the window, not in between two glass panes. They do offer zero protection from radioactivity, of course, but are actually somewhat resistant to people trying to get in, because they don’t shatter when hit.
Mostly correct, but does give a tiny extra protection, and they are not between window panes, just straight up outside. They are made of plastic tho.
@@kevincard172 not metal, at least not 99% of them, maybe some obscure company makes them from metal too.
Well, nobody in these replies can agree, but I do appreciate y'all chiming in.
Thw part that suxk is iif some kids baseball breaks that window it much more expensive to fix or replace ...😂
That’s every window in Europe
Standard in germany and often electrified, automatically controlled by WiFi Apps and tc.
you can just lift them up with your hands when outside
What are these, and where can I buy them?
Very common in Europe
Maybe leave the handle on in case your house is burning down.
That's awesome.I'd want it to be a little thicker
Seen this done with 3/8 titanium plates that slides down with an electric motor, even for the front door.
Nice and cheap security ..😂
Guys…this is standard in Greece .. Come on!!!
I love it
What's the name of this product
Storm shutters
Why outside tho? They couldve done the same thing inside and keep it hidden in the wall better to clean and manage cuz the wind and water will for sure mess it up quicker.
Just looks like a way for ants to sneak thru wherever that levers connected.
Looks like they are there for window protection. I would make sense in hurricane country, but I see desert outside.
those are all over in sun city......they are wonderful
Hurricane shutters.
I need this in Arizona!
Kivw in a costal city and lot of our commercial buikding and nicer residential homes that are on the beach have these. Great for hurricane season.
guess you live in hurricane area
NO THANKS - I WANT TO BE ABLE TO GET OUT IN AN EMERGENCY LIKE A FIRE .....
An earthquake could skew those things jammed shut. I'm with you. I'm dangerous without armor.
I don’t understand. Need more info
Normal ahh shades in Europe bruh
BUT this looks like an american house...
Im europe everyone has these but with a string 😂
The good old us of a
TBH, the mechanism to operate these roller shades are not very attractive.
Is this a joke vid?
For earthquakes etc.😊
Sorry, those flimsy things aren't keeping anything out. More of a advertising that it's a nice target if anything.
Don't believe they're between glass. German Rolladen.
WHERE?? makes me crazy when you show stuff but no links or names
It's just shutters, you can probably find them everywhere online as everyone has them in Europe, pretty standard
Your house is still made out of things that can be penetrated. At least the windows will survive.
It's just plastic shutters, those windows aren't surviving much more than without. Maybe a hailstorm or two, but even that damages them. It's more for heat and light insulation than protection, they are pretty fragile, especially the ones that have been in use for years, the sunlight makes the plastic weak.
What are these called ?
Roll-a-way security shutters
Storm windows gates
@PumpkinKingXXIII the word security is a money ploy. You just got robbed
EXACTLY!
I’m a widow, for the past 4.5 years I’ve dated 2 men in that time, the first took me 6 weeks to figure out he was MARRIED 😮
THE second took a month to figure out he’s a controlling narcissist!
I haven’t dated anyone since, but when I do, a long values conversation will be the first thing ❤
If Biden gets re elected for sure will need it.
Why?
