I’ve been putting off buying blinds for my house for over 3 years. Being a first time home owner comes with a lot to learn and blinds definitely ended up near the bottom of my list. Thank you so much for really breaking it down and giving amazing advice. I now feel confident attacking this task instead of going in “blind”.
Thank you for explaining this at the human level; person-to-person. Very transparent and with insight on topics/question that would have come up later (that I would go down the rabbit hole and research, such as Lowe’s not cutting their own blinds). I’m wanted to find heavier mini blinds (for when the breeze kicks up) that are blackout (for better sleep and thermal regulation of my bedroom temperature). Very grateful to have found your video 🙏🏼 Thanks again!
You really did a nice job covering just about everything. I'm sharing this video with my son who is in the midst of realizing it's more complicated than he thought.
What a great job you did on this video! Not too fast, not too slow. . . . Something I would add is that when measuring for width, if you take the 3 measurements as you recommend, you use the SMALLEST of the 3 to order the blinds. Otherwise, you may end up with blinds that are cut too wide to open and close at the smallest part of the window. Also, 2-3 measurements on the height is a good idea. In that case it is the longest measurement that you use. Height measurements usually aren't as problematic but occasionally a window is very out of square and a person buys them to the exact height that they've measured, they could end up with a blind dangling on one end of the window because it is taller than the other side.
This is a great informative video! We have recently purchased a cabin with two huge picture windows with an awesome view. With my newfound knowledge, I'll be able to successfully purchase and install new blinds. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
I just bought blinds from both, Lowe’s and Home Depot, the exact same blinds (different box/brand) are twice as expensive at Home Depot just because they cut them to size 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Thanl ou for the good info. Im looking to buy a white zebra blind for a Bay window. The problem im finding is that can't find the size 98 w ×45 h I live in Hamilton NJ.
Thankyou, very informative, I'm trying to find blinds to fit my huge bow window! The blinds would have to be mounted to the ceiling as there's no frame to attach at the top of the window? 🤔
Glad it helped! I think both materials are fine. I've had both and I think aluminum is harder to break, BUT it's easier to dent. We had dented aluminum from our dog and there was no way to fix it. Vinyl is also easier to adjust widths (can be cut easily). I'd choose vinyl but aluminum has more longevity I think.
Where did get the window blinds cheatsheet? Thanks for the tips on purchasing blinds at the local hardware store. I feel better about taking the measurements and making a purchase.😊
Excellent. We’re having new windows installed in our coop and we want to replace the existing blinds. This was very helpful. I was going straight for the Levelor brand but I will now look at your suggestions. Thanks Mom 😊
You can save A LOT of money doing things on your own. I have been fixing up things around my house for years. Sometimes I feel lazy so I look up how much it would be to hire someone to do it for me but when I see the prices that others charge it gives me the energy to do it myself. So many times I see 100$+ jobs that I can do myself with ~20$ and a little bit of research if it is something I don't already know how to do.
Thanks for the information. I just had REALLY expensive Champion windows installed. I will need outside mount blind because the windows are very thick, there is no space for mounting inside blinds. Here goes, fingers crossed. (Choosing right is the hardest part, I have the skill to hang them myself.)
Girl, thanks for info!! I went to home depot last night and didn't measure the length, I guessed at it! Not good, lol. Well after measuring, I have to go back to home depot today:)
Today I got the quote of $3,400 for 19 windows in my townhome. Not sure if it is reasonable. One advantage is that they will be installed as soon as the house is ready and before the move-in, which I thought is cool. Let me know your thoughts on the pricing.
I have no idea if that's a good price for custom blinds. If you're doing it yourself, I'd expect it to be less than $100/window unless you have giant windows so that would be less than $1900, just to give you an idea. Of course, it would be a lot of work to install them yourself.
How do i deal with or rather, what is your recommendation re measuring wimdows with inner design strip that protrudes? Do you recommend blinds for such windows?
Excellent video!!! My windows are 35 x 58 and I can’t find that size of cellular blinds anywhere!!! Did you say the length CANNOT be cut? 😢 I’ve been able to find 35x64 but I’m afraid that will bunch up too much on the bottom???
Correct, the length can not be cut on the cellular but it will be fine! I think most people who have them have some bunching at the bottom, but it's not noticeable like it is with miniblinds.
I have short windows with long cellular blinds and they look great. The fabric is pleated so it gathers very neatly and is hardly noticeable. I have had multiple mini blinds but the cellular are by far my favorite. The only drawback is that they can discolor over time but it's only noticeable when you have the shades open.
Do you suggest doing the whole house at once, if you already have blinds, and replace as they fail, are the same styles always there year in and year out. I have three that look really shabby, one has failed completely. Also, the vinyl gets brittle over time and yellow a bit - hopefully a long time, my vinyl one inch slats lasted about 20 years. I guess I will 'practice' on the back of the house, I will be going with 2 inch slats. Also, DUST.
I think you can generally find ones that are "close enough" even if they aren't exactly the same, so I don't think it matters which way you do it. We've been working on ours as we fix up each room in our house (which has been a 5 year process at this point).
It is not just overwhelming but these days all new blinds are cordless. What I dislike very much about that is that if they are down too long they get stuck that way and are a pain to get back up. If they are going to take the cords away at least put some kind of knob on the end of the rail so we have some way to raise them up again. It would probably be mind numbingly slow to do it that way but at least we won't feel screwed over by government regulations. I get it, children have had unfortunate accidents with the cords but now we all have to suffer because some mom was too F ing lazy to control her children and teach them the dangers of blinds.
I was quoted ~$7,500 for blinds from Hunter Douglas for my entire home, and am looking at less expensive options. Is there a brand or brands that you consider to have good quality and a good price that you can suggest? Also, why would someone go with Hunter Douglas? Is it far above these other brands? Great video. Thank you!!
I mean, there's certainly a difference between what you buy off the rack at Home Depot versus a fully custom, installed option like Hunter Douglas. Is the difference worth the money? Only you can answer that. I've been happy enough with my store-brand ones from Lowes and Home Depot but it is work to install them and I know they won't last forever.
Well I'm in that. I'm not able to expend a "fortune" buying a blind for my "door side window", the size is 78x29, the longest length is 72 ; the wide are extreme up or down from the 29. The only option is to go, for a custom one, but these are expensive. Then, I have to keep that window, just with curtains.
We had vinyl window replacement and left with only 1/2 inch wood ledge for any type of bracket for shades or blinds (inside mount). I've tried the Lowes brands cellular shades (which we liked), but the bracket holes wouldn't fit within the 1/2 inch (inner top mount). What was there were inner side mounted brackets for wooden blinds- which we wanted to get away from. Although it looks like we are limited to inner side mount 1/2 inch ledge, any idea on how to find shades that may fit?
Oh that's rough. I don't have any specific suggestions. It seems like you'll just have to shop around and hopefully find one that happens to work. Sorry I don't have any good suggestions!
Thank you for covering the entire subject in under seven minutes. Very helpful!

Thanks big time for putting this information in one video. This is my first time looking into blinds and I know nothing about navigating this space.

Just the video I was looking for. Thank you!
Glad I could help!
Thanks for giving me a starting point of how I should start thinking about blinds
Glad I could help!
I recommend do the height an inch bigger than the window. It's easy to do it too short.
Thanks for the tip on stated width vs actual
You're welcome!

Any guidance on aluminum versus vinyl for miniblinds?

I agree with getting blinds at Home Depot. I have rentals and have found them to be the most economical.

Thank you for this! So helpful!
You're so welcome! What kind of blinds or shades are you going to get?
Thank you so much for explaining the details. It turns out buying a house is easier that setting up blinds 🤔
Happy to help! And yes, I agree, window coverings are absolutely more complicated than buying a house!
What are your opinions on materials ? Like vinyl, aluminum, faux wood or actual wood ?
Really informative going to Home Depot now!
I once knew a fellow sold window blinds, but didn't buy from him because he was a shady character.
😂 good one
🤣🤣🤣
Sloooooo claaaaap
Nice
Dad?
Very informative, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I only need corded 35 inch width, indoor white...
Where do I find them?
Because of you I cancel my $615 (3 blinds) order from Lowe’s. Thank you! 😊

Awesome! Glad I could help!
Great video….. informative and clear. Thank You Sophia
You are so welcome!
What do you do if the window blinds are in a hard-to-access area and require a cord to open them, but all corded blinds have been banned since 2018?
There are a lot of powered blind choices that would work in that situation. They take batteries.
@@MomCanFixIt That sounds prohibitively expensive for a small laundry room window...
Thanks for the information. I just had REALLY expensive Champion windows installed. I will need outside mount blind because the windows are very thick, there is no space for mounting inside blinds. Thank you. Now i got some ideas.

very very helpful! thank you
What color choices come
With off the shelf blinds?
For the most part, I've only seen white and off-white. You may be able to find brown, but you're not going to find a lot of color options.
Girl, thanks for info!! I went to home depot last night and didn't measure the length, I guessed at it! Not good, lol. Well after measuring, I have to go back to home depot today:)

Hey, do you know about Lowe’s trim and go ? Do you they cut the blinds to the measurements we give free of charge ?
thank you well explained

Our window measured at 93 inches wide and 46 inches long. Does Home Depot carry blinds that would work for those sizes?
That was really helpful.
