As a hobby woodworker who hasn't sold a single thing yet I think I have "invested" like 10-15k already. Maybe I'll start selling stuff eventually, but for now I'm just building for myself and my family. Small furniture and cutting boards and stuff like that
I don’t even get that!! I have a pretty capable shop - no it can’t do “everything” but I’m neither interested in doing “everything” nor do I want to. Nor can one be an expert with proficiency at every discipline of woodworking. Do what you do well, find your stride, follow the market, put out something better and different than someone else. I’m pretty sure if I had to buy the basic tools and start over tomorrow I could buy in to start doing what I do with less than $5,000. All you need is a decent cast iron tables saw, a not cheap compound mitre saw and stand, some wood chisels, say something like a Porter Cable cordless tool set that includes a jigsaw, some measuring tools, the two-base bosch router and basic cheap cutters, a cheap Pony bench vise and an end vise, and $500 of plywood and 2x4s, some screws. That will get you all you need to make a decent usable bench and some tablesaw sleds and you’ll be in business. Granted, I have way more woodworking tools than that but at 58yo I’ve been amazed sometimes with how few tools I actually use! Going over some old pictures of work I did back to 1988 and in the 1990s the other day with my sister here is a comment I made to her after viewing the cleated tabletops (to keep seasonal movements from splitting the tops) and mortises, etc.: “I can’t believe I did that! I can’t imagine how I built that- I had no tools!” Some pieces were done when I only had a circular saw, cheapo jigsaw, jobsite carpentry tools, and a Mayes drywall square. And I built on some 2x4 sawhorses. Start building, sell it, do it again, and stop buying stuff you don’t even know if you need!
To Black Tail. I love your work. As far as flying. I flew for 25years. More than 20 years in a Stinson. Loved to fly. Sold my plane last year and I miss it. Work on a lathe now. I’m obsessed other than the flying objects.
Totally appreciate your Christian witness in all your work. As a pastor, I often use my woodworking hobby in my sermon illustrations and give away some of the projects I do as surprises when I preach.
I pretty much did the same thing you did Matt, working with law enforcement then separating to do woodworking/construction. Thanks for your support and content. If you guys didn't have UA-cam, could you support your family with just the wood? John Alligood Worthy of a Change Home Improvements
I think if I had 100% focused on woodworking I could have. I was making over $30,000/year in just woodworking before UA-cam took off. That was me doing it part time, on my 2 days off per week and some morning/evenings. Check this video out ua-cam.com/video/cRll6JynoQI/v-deo.html
Good stuff. Will say shop around for carriers. You may find a better deal if you're in a different part of the country or where the final destination is.
I was wondering if could do a segment on what you shops electrical system is? How big your panel is, how many different circuits for 220v/110. It’s not something I see covered under woodworking Channels and it’s an important aspect to how a wood shop runs.
@@dougiefresh9618nice. I currently have 1 20amp circuit that does the primary bedroom, laundry room and the garage lol. My whole house is on 150. I have an electrician coming next week to add a 220v circuit and another 20 amp. $$$$
I won't expose his "alter ego," but "Yellow Hammer" is one of the wiseest and most talented Sawyers on the planet. Look up "Sawmill Yoda" or "Sawmill Professor" you will be glad you did! Nobody can produce better quality hardwood!
731 how did you learn to create blueprints for your projects that sell? I'm new to woodworking, I can "see" what to finished piece looks like in my mind, but I don't have the skill to put it on paper and make it understandable to anybody else. My projects for the moment are specific to my current needs on my homestead. While I believe that others may buy my finished pieces I know that many like myself would rather build it, so I figured doing both like yourself. What app do you use, did you learn to use the app, do you pay somebody else to create blueprints for your projects?
We do them every Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. CST here on UA-cam. We did not do one this last Tuesday due to Valentine's but other than holiday's we are live each Tuesday.
If you are buying tools with your profit then profit is not profit but more expenses. You do however create more assets. You only get to count it as profit once you get to spend it on new cars, new houses, taking trips etc. You also have to save money to pay taxes too right?
"You don't call the shots, hehe. He don't call the shots." Hey now, Ephesians 5:22-33 Mrs. 731. He can call some shots. Oh yes, he sure can ;). Matt, hope I don't get you in any trouble!
Hey Matt…. I tried sending you an email and it wont go through for some reason. Anyways I am 100 percent blind and yoou are someone I look up to! But i would like to have a personal conversation with you… I will pay for the opertunity but feel like we can team up on some projects
Two of my favorite woodworkers in one video! @731woodworks and @blacktailstudio, I am challenged as well so I have been shaving my head since the early 2000's lol.
If you pay attention to these stories you can identify the same pattern. None of these guys have worked in s woodworking shop before. They all had a well paying job to rely on and fall back to if necessary. It also provided them with the extra cash they needed to set up a shop. If you work in a wood shop for somebody, you will never make enough money to buy s house with shopspace and launch your own business. Sad truth what nobody talks about.
Y’all two and Rex Krueger are paving the way for follicly challenged woodworkers who do great work. Thanks for all the great content.
This was an awesome collaboration, both of y'all are awesome!! Great video!!!
I only subscribe to two woodworking channels, and I’m watching both of them! My best to you all!
Awesome! Thank you!
This segment really encouraged me to get my Instagram account up and running. Thanks for your honesty and hard work!

Tenacity and passion wins the race. If you have the skills, time to start getting in front of people and selling selling selling :).

Two epic channels for the woodworking community
Two of my favorite people to watch in the same video. Two totally different styles of working with wood but both are beautiful

I am from Holland....and you inspire me,so i begon wood work because of you.
Your videos and testimony inspired me to begin getting serious about woodworking. I’m from Pine Bluff and work in Monticello very often.
wood working is the greatest thing ever

Hi Jhony Sins ur the best
Sorry missed it live, but caught it on replay.
We missed you Scruffy. Hope all is well!
When’s the outdoor table build? We’re due for one as well. Interested to see what you come up with. May do the same or similar!

For a nice shop a 100 amp service should be plenty.

Most people use SketchUp for it
I hire someone to make our plans but he uses sketch up
Where can I get that Armor of God shirt? I want one

Does Rubio Monocoat work well on shaved heads?

If people get trigged by "OCD", there's always "discerning" or "particular"
Y’all I’m 4 minutes in and my wife is just like y’all’s. 😂 She makes me a better man and woodworker with the same attitude as amy and cams wife.
