    For those wondering how this ended up. “The FAA has closed the case involving the pilot who crossed a Hawthorne Municipal Airport runway without authorization on April 24, 2020. The FAA required the pilot to take a remedial runway incursion training course. When the pilot successfully completed the course, the FAA closed the case with no additional action,” the FAA said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
    On another note, this non-standard phraseology and colloquial talk from US ATC is a disaster waiting to happen. This obviously was a case of an expectation bias and "continue holding short" is a completely redundant and dangerous instruction that makes no sense.
    Finally, I'd suggest that HF should stop flying, for his own and other aviator's safety reasons. You just cannot stop time.

      There's a difference between armchair quarterbacking and being there calling the shots in real time.
      Ford told the tower that he was holding short of the runway. He anticipated that the next instruction would be to cross it; not to keep doing what he was already doing. Next thing he heard was an instruction which started with "continue" and he automatically determined he was being given the clearance to cross that he was anticipating. I work in the railroad industry where this is referred to as complacency, which happens when somebody is too comfortable with the task they're performing.
      While I believe that Ford accepted what he heard because was complacent, I also believe the controller confused the matter by giving redundant instructions and by not giving them clearly ("go ahead and back up" is a common joke amongst railroaders when discussing unclear directions). He either needed to simply acknowledge Ford's transmission with "Roger" or he needed to slowly and clearly give the same instruction over "Roger HU. Hold short of runway 25, traffic on the runway." (I also believe "Traffic on Final" was more accurate and might have given Ford more cause to question an interpretation that he was to proceed, but I may be stretching my knowledge here).
      Both the tower operator and Ford have some culpability here because the communication was simply not good. However I think in terms of identifiable and retrainable faults which led to the ultimate breakdown, those lie with the controller. Ford's failure to correctly interpreted the directions can be traced back to the redundant and unclear communications from the tower operator.

    Observation: the controller’s use of the word “continue” may have thrown Ford off. He may have thought that the controller was wanting him to expedite for traffic on the runway.
    Opinion: this was an easy mistake. I see it from time to time with pilots of all ages. Runway incursions SHOULDN’T happen, and should be avoided at all costs, but they happen. Regardless, the FAA is right to investigate.
    Opinion: Is age getting to him? Maybe, but given that he read back what he THOUGHT he heard, tells me that he genuinely thought he had been cleared across.
    Opinion: Ford should have a checkride with an FAA inspector and a full medical to ensure that he is A) maintaining proficiency B) is fit to pilot an aircraft.
    Fact: Ford has decades of flying under his belt and has been a huge part of the GA community.
    Opinion: someone like Ford who has such a deep love of flying would be devastated to be grounded.

    • @JamesPowerOfficial
      @JamesPowerOfficial 4 роки тому +23

      After reading your observation and listening back again I can understand. Definitely a possibility of misunderstanding there. The last transmission to Ford was very quick and a half listen could have been misinterpreted. I think he should have confirmed but the tower sounded busy and I can understand if he went with what he thought heard instead of requesting a repeat transmission.
      Message to all pilots here, if in doubt request retrans. No matter how busy we are we would prefer that increase the workload by 10% and be sure you know what to do than an error increase the workload by 200%. Never be afraid to ask for confirmation.

      J V -Continue, as used in ATC, means, "continue doing what you are doing". To an aircraft on final approach, I can say "Continue approach", to an aircraft taxiing, I can say "Continue taxiing" and to one holding at a position, I can say "Continue holding". It does not mean that he can taxi onto a runway, or proceed across a runway. "Go ahead", is usually used when you want the party to pass the message to you while on the radio or during landline communications. It is never used while controlling ground or airborne traffic. The phraseology used by this controller was correct, some say spoken very fast. I have been in this business for 34 years and it seemed normal to me, then again, I know what to expect. When hearing, "continue holding, aircraft on the runway", the bells should have started ringing in the pilots mind. Inadvertently, he heard only what he thought he was going to hear, and that was to cross the runway. Pavlov, Russian scientist, did an an experiment with dogs. He rang a bell, the dogs came salivating and he fed them. They always responded in the same manner, salivating and were fed. Then he rang the bell, they came, but were not fed. Later he again rang the bell, they came salivating, but were not fed. The pilot expected to hear "Cross rwy 25 approved", but that was not the case. He heard the transmission, but did not mentally understand it. He mentally interpreted it as crossing instruction.

    • @jeffbrousseau5363
      @jeffbrousseau5363 4 роки тому +15

      Pilots have an expectancy bias of what to hear, HF is expecting the next instructions to be “Continue across runway 25...”. With engines running i5 is easy to hear the word “continue “ and your brain autofills the expectation. It was not a good command from ATC on this one.

      continue doesn't mean cross. Clearance to cross a runway is a specific thing. Read back while doing something is a terrible plan, too, it leaves no time for correction. Worldaviation 4K Aside from standard phraseology words, communications have to use regular English words at the correct knowledge level. International pilots and air traffic controllers are required to have that knowledge, but many do not.
      The word “continue” is a basic word with a basic meaning, but many poorly educated (in English) people misinterpret that meaning as “to go” or “proceed”. It does not mean ANY of those things, at all. When everyone involved actually commands at least basic English, there will he no issue using it.
      In this case, the ATC used the word “continue” properly. Most commenters on here do not. This lack of basic English terms is often masked by commenters blaming the speed of transmission or “ambiguity” of commands. In reality, the fault lies in English comprehension. I get that many are not native English speakers and that it’s a challenge, but nonetheless, that’s the issue.

When I do this at my airport, the response is either "Cross Runway XX" or "Hold Short XX". So it's very expected that ATC will give a response immediately. The word "continue" is a little unusual and may have thrown him off, but you really should be looking for the words "cross" or "hold short". OK, I'm not defending a runway incursion, but taxiway Hotel is the very, very end of 25. Ford had landed and departed the runway on taxiway Delta, which is a little less than halfway down the runway (which is almost 5,000' ). The plane landing was a Cirrus and had about a 5kt headwind. The specs for that aircraft indicate a ground roll with no wind on landing of around 1,200'. So the likelihood of those two colliding is pretty close to zero. With that said, the airport diagram for HHR indicates: "Be alert to runway crossing clearances. Read back of all runway holding instructions is required". Ford's mistake was he began to proceed during his read back of the controller's "continue to hold" instruction. I think if there was any real danger, the controller would have issued and "all stop" to Ford and the Cirrus. I'd love to hear what the Cirrus pilot has to say about it.

      1) he did read back his landing clearance, we've missed part of it due to static but it was there. The controller was satisfied with his readback.
      2) He didn't have to say "taxi to X Hangar" in that particular conversation.
      3) As far as I know, traffic on the runway does not preclude ATC from issuing runway cross clearance. For example, I do believe the whole purpose of "line up and wait" clearance is to wait for the landing traffic to exit the safety area of the runway. But in any case, we just don't know how this clearance sounded like in Ford's comms. If all he heard was "continue... runway..." he could have reasonably assumed that he got that clearance given that the other traffic he was holding short for has already landed.
      I really don't see what's the issue here - due to prompt readbacks there was no real danger of an accident as the controller was immediately made aware that Ford did not understand instructions and the situation was resolved by simply letting him continue crossing the runway. I mean - that's why we have readbacks.

      @Mr Roque Not really, sometimes, too much information in the moment is just that. And Harrison ford isn't the only one that has ever don this, he's just the one we hear about. (Although I do admit, after the taxiway landing, I was starting to question his abilities.)

    • @MickiSel
      @MickiSel 4 роки тому +1

      It is completely normal to add information such as "traffic on the runway" while giving clearances. It helps with situational awareness as the pilot now understands why he has to hold short, and can add the information to his mental picture. However, I do agree the "continue holding short" part was mumbled. He should not have said "continue" in my opinion.

    • @JimsEquipmentShed
      @JimsEquipmentShed 4 роки тому

      @@MickiSel I think if continue had been left out, it would have been a non-issue. Conflicting descriptors are not helpful, the radio is always crackeling with other traffic, it doesn't help. Harrison should have asked for clarification though. (Unless he thought he heard the proper words...)

    As a casual observer - Is it common for a private pilot to have as many issues as he has had in recent years? Is it just that he's attracting publicity because of who he is or does he need to go back to school?

      No it's not common. The only reason he keeps getting a pass is because he's Harrison Ford. If it were anyone else his license would have been suspended after he flew over the airliner and landed on a taxiway.

      Before the incident back in 2017, he had a clean record. This was his second, and he was nearly 80 at the time of this incident. It is certainly more likely to occur at that age, which is why a lot of pilots hang up their wings at retirement age, but he has decided to continue to fly. I don't know if he is still flying, but as a pilot, I can understand how hard it would be to give up even at that age if you love it

    IDK, obviously Ford should have clarified the controllers instructions, but the controller said 'continue', and mentioned the holding short part real quick. The next expected thing for the controller to say would have been 'continue taxi', so its an easy mix up. Controller needs to slow down and be more clear with his instructions if you ask me. But it comes down to that Harrison probably should have asked for clarification if he didn't clearly understand the instructions.

    I agree continue would be confusing. I can't recall getting a continue to hold, I've only gotten "standby traffic on final / runway etc" but never continue unless I'm coming in for landing or actively taxiing.
