And, when engaging a Tool fan about it I usually get the accusations that I don't understand complex music or like long songs. I think an early instrumentals by genesis or king crimson or yes is just different because they each have twice as many members so their longest songs can have brass or wind solos or even a keyboard solo. Each band would have backing members that would have impressive solo or group success elsewhere like bill Buford, Phil Collins and the elp members. Can't always brute force ahead of that with four members.
I love Tool as music. It's been a soundtrack to my life. Maynard's an interesting guy but I don't give a damn about him personally. I Love their music but I do not idolize the man for making music I like. That's the problem with tool fans and most other groups fans. Understandable! My thing is that, I want to understand why I personally dont like certain bands, so I listen out of research and not enjoyment. Through this, I was able to make some bands absolute favorites of mine. There was a time I disliked Alice In Chains simply because of "Man In The Box". I went beyond my comfort zone and checked out everything else. Their second album Dirt really affected me and now I know every album because I love them now. It varies with every person and every artist, but I believe we can learn more about ourselves by making the small effort to just try it all out once in the case you might like something, you know? We only live once and I feel it's a shame that I as a music lover would reject something just because of one song, one experience with a fan or something else that prevents me from exploring their art. And about Tool fans, I apologize but it do be like that :(

I had been to many concerts by then and none of them had ever done that while performing.. Once I looked into it and read up about the band I found that they nearly always perform like that, but not to be rude to the fans. Maynard wants the show to be about the whole band and just him, the lead singer, under a spotlight and reaping all the glory. How many bands in the past had a very famous lead singer but almost no one could name the other band members. Allot of them. Most of them..That's just one of the reasons, but my point is once I found out why they performed the way they do I didn't really mind anymore. 👍

Drummer is good but seems like the band was always just half assedly trying to keep up with him. My basic gripe was that all of the songs sounded the same. Great for punk music where the songs never lasted for more than 2 minutes, but these guys try to take the old approach of jam/metal bands yet offer no build up or clever change-up to their 5-10 minute songs. Just a preference in song writing I guess.

I rather we try to encourage people to try out different artists to find out what music they like best! Nothing wrong with artists you dont like, as long as you can explain why you dont like them. We have to go beyond the surface level of "I just dont like them." There's usually something deeper whether it be musically, something about the artist themselves, or something connected. That's how we can appreciate music better and grab a better understanding of all genres :D
The real reasons. The current members aren't interesting. They had a couple good pop songs, way back when. Mostly helped by their original bassist who had a sense of musicality. That's the only reason anyone has even ever heard of them. Now they are just recycling their old timing things. Maynard hasn't come up with funny or interesting lyrics in a long time.
I'm 44 and just discovered them. The reason was their videos were always so creepy and crazy, I didn't see the music, now I listen and see the beauty.

I rather we try to encourage people to try out different artists to find out what music they like best! Nothing wrong with artists you dont like, as long as you can explain why you dont like them.
We have to go beyond the surface level of "I just dont like them." There's usually something deeper whether it be musically, something about the artist themselves, or something connected. That's how we can appreciate music better and grab a better understanding of all genres :D

The real reasons. The current members aren't interesting. They had a couple good pop songs, way back when. Mostly helped by their original bassist who had a sense of musicality. That's the only reason anyone has even ever heard of them. Now they are just recycling their old timing things. Maynard hasn't come up with funny or interesting lyrics in a long time.
