How escaping Red Bull has transformed Alex Albon's faltering F1 career

  • Alex Albon is a completely different driver in 2022 to the one who looked hopelessly lost during his final months with Red Bull Racing two seasons ago.
There was an element of risk for Williams in signing him, as despite Albon being highly-regarded as a driver with tremendous ability, he struggled when up against Max Verstappen at Red Bull.
The hope was always that Albon’s blend of F1 experience, top-team know-how and determination to reignite his F1 career would coalesce and he’d finally fulfil his prodigious potential in F1. Based on the first five races of the season it was an inspired signing - giving Williams a talismanic driver to replace the seemingly-irreplaceable George Russell.

I know people like to make Redbull out to be the boogeyman but they really did Alex a solid by keeping him around where he could learn with less pressure in the background. It has been reported that George did recommend Albon for the Williams seat and Horner pushed hard for him also. Albon says he gets on great with Horner and Sith Lord Marko and appreciates his Williams seat. I think RB saw tons of talent but they and Albon know that he needs more experience in a place that isn't a 'match Max or else' pressure cooker. RB still has options on Albon after this season, will be interesting to see where he is driving next season. I would not be surprised to see Albon back at Alpha Tauri next season, as Gasly will be somewhere else on the grid, maybe McLaren. Checo likely keeps the RB seat, he likes the understeer bias of the new cars and is doing what RB needs.

Red Bull also had a hand in saving his career, they gave him a place in the team and trusted him and actively helped find him a new spot. It was a no brainer to sign perez especially if they wanted to mount a title challenge. Not to mention in Sakhir, when all of the top contenders except a redbull get taken out, the red bull should win. Albon finished 6th, and perez won from last in a worse car. I believe driving a championship fighting car and a midfield/backpack car requires different skill and mindset.
We’ve seen Albon’s good performance in the 2019 Toro Rosso. His well doing in the Williams is not a surprise to me.
But a drive for a front running team requires ultimate self-belief and a sharp driving style that not all drivers have. Same can be seen with Gasly and Sainz, who shines in midfield car but not in race winning ones.
Perez was great in Racing Point, still took a year to transition to his current level at RB. Bottas was already rapid in his midfield Williams days.

And RBR helped Alex GET that seat in Williams. They really backed him. Alex told in F1 Off The Grid podcast all abt that.
