OoT W/Lyrics Behind the Scenes: Teacake Talk Pt1

  • The long, long, (long,) late-night conversation that brentalfloss and I had on the night we finished filming the confrontation scene for Ocarina Of Time With Lyrics. We decided to answer the questions you'd all been asking us about our REAL opinions of the games we've been singing about.
    Yep, this is really long, and it's only the first half of the conversation. I thought you'd prefer a long video with all the info intact, rather than a heavily edited one with (potentially) the answers you most want cut out, so here it all is.
    Here's the Ocarina of Time With Lyrics song itself: • Zelda: Ocarina of Time...
    And here's part two of this conversation, for those who don't care about Mario Land or Mario Sunshine and want to jump straight to where we talk about Ocarina of Time and the making of the new song: • OoT With Lyrics Behind...

    It's really awesome seeing their heritage and how that influenced how they interpreted the games. It's crazy how much our past influences or feelings about the present.

    It's absolutely weird to me to think that some people actually liked mario 64's controls, but not sunshine's. I find sunshine's controls the BEST of any mario game. Galaxy let me down because it didnt control as tightly.. mind, i played sunshine first, then galaxy, then 64.. but when i played 64 it was like 'jesus even inching along ledges in zelda was easier than navigating these narrow rails'

    Oh Dave, I just realised, you inadvertently gave Brent the idea for "Game Launch Rock"!
    Funnily enough, I had that same childhood mentality you had of "this will be too expensive so I won't even ask for it". I didn't actually get any kind of console until my teens when I was in a position to save up and buy one myself.
    Interestingly, what Brent says about the happy fun theme of Sunshine not matching the island's hit-by-a-hurricane appearance is how I feel about Link Between Worlds -- there's this happy fun theme song and all these wacky characters and side quests... but you're meant to be saving the kingdom from an evil sorcerer who's turning people into paint.

    You guys are confused.
    Yoshi's Island (and story) had BABY Bowser, not Bowser Jr. Sunshine is indeed Bowser Jr's debut. Also, Miyamoto officially confirmed that the Koopalings of Mario 3 are not Bowser's children, merely underlings of his.

    • @brentalfloss
      @brentalfloss 9 років тому +15

      I think the point Dave made was that it seemed like an uninformed party, while making Mario Sunshine, decided that Bowser needed a kid and chose the preexisting character model of Baby Bowser from Yoshi's Island, regardless of whether it was a logical choice.

    Was painful to listen to them call Mario Sunshine the "Starfox Adventures" of the Mario franchise. Other than FLUDD, Mario controls exactly like Mario 64, you hop into worlds and collect 7 shines instead of stars, it really wasn't that much of a departure and if it was the same game reskinned to not be Mario I can guaruntee everyone would have called it the biggest Mario clone of all time.

    My dad bought me a Gamecube for my birthday with The Legend of Zelda Collectors edition. My Zelda home base was Zelda, Zelda II, Ocarina, and Majoras Mask, (and a wind waker demo). So my comfort zone for Zelda was a bit more open. I wasn't turned off by switching between top down, side scroller, and 3d Zelda.

    I think I felt I came up with the same feelings towards games being "different" that Dave had, but to even more of an extreme. Such is why I loved Star Fox Adventures; I played 64 first, and got the game k owing it was going to be different, and when I played it, the first thought I had was " oh wow, cool a Star Fox (ready for this one?) ADVENTURE game! Just like Zelda"
    And it didn't occur to me to hate it because it wasn't the same type of game. I just liked it because it was a good game with a character I liked. It wasn't until later I realised it was just universally hated, and it kinda upset me when I first realised I was in the minority after loving it so much. Naturally, because if that, I have kind of a disconnect in arguments about games, especially Zelda games, because the thought in my head is "why are you complaining about the differences? Its's SUPPOSED to be different"
    Same with sunshine. Though... I didn't really like that one just as a game, not because of anything to do with it being a Mario game.

  • @TBoneTony
    @TBoneTony 9 років тому +1

    The funny thing is that some people love a game so much, then a sequel comes out that changes the way things are done, and it is hated by all people.
    And then the people who are new and had not experienced the original, would love the sequel more than those who already played the original.
    The Gamecube era I liked StarFox Adventure mainly because I followed the game in the magazines back when it was originally Dinosaur Planet.
    And RARE was a huge thing back then.
    Being in Australia, we had games come in a few months after the USA release, so when I finally got StarFox Adventures, I knew that RARE was no longer with Nintendo and this game was going to be the last RARE game for Nintendo.
    I felt like my sadness at the time I felt, was perhaps what made me love Dinosaur Planet/StarFox Adventures.
    I took it as a game that was original, yet having StarFox characters added in.
    I never knew about those who were massive StarFox fans who loved the SNES and N64 StarFox games, then found that StarFox Adventures was a real disappointment for them.
    I can understand their view and perhaps it was because I understand the development of the game originally as Dinosaur Planet, I understood that it was not going to be a traditional StarFox game.
    Maybe we need to be mindful of the issues in making a game in the industry in order to have a proper critique of a game.

    Thank you so much for making this! It has been quite fun to watch! I loved hearing the differences in how you were exposed to the Gameboy and console systems.
    It's also funny that you guys mentioned Starfox Adventures. That was actually my first "Starfox" game. The Gamecube came out and one of my recently met friends was a HUGE Starfox fan, so I bought it to understand why they loved the series. I had zero idea it was such a deviation from the series, so I went through the whole thing with wonder and awe, likely colored by my friends opinion of "Starfox = awesome".
    My issues with it were General Scales NOT being the true bad guy, and the final fight being an airship battle when at least 80% (if not more) of the actual game was on land. I beat it and talked to my friend and he had spent the same week of time HATING every moment of Starfox Adventures, while I loved it. He ended up coming to the conclusion that it was an okay GAME, just not as a Starfox game. I still love it as a Starfox game, but I had no previous exposure to the series.

    Part of what allows me to enjoy Mario Sunshine as an adult, is the broken physics. The game is not designed as neatly as Mario Galaxy. And you can exploit that by doing ridiculous tricks and jumps to get to places that have an intended path, but is not rigid.
    For example, completing the game without using the jetpack once is entirely possible, very fun, and a completely unique experience from a normal playthrough. And that's only possible because the physics are not as refined perfect and neat.

    I can relate a lot to Dave's story of how he got into videogames and LCD games and how he would discover games by just knowing someone that had them rather than read about them in magazines. I still think A Link to the Past is my favourite game ever because of the fond memories I have of getting it by accident and just giving it a chance. It was Christmas and I had earned the right to get one game due to my good grades in school, and I wanted Street Fighter II, but there were no copies left in the store my mom took me to and she wouldn't be bothered to look in other stores so she said "pick one of these games or you get no game at all". At first I didn't even want to play it, then it seemed very complex, slow and boring, then all of a sudden it was the best gaming experience I had ever had.

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 9 років тому +2

      A similar sort of thing happened with my brother and I, although more recently. We already had on copy of Smash Bros. 3DS, but we wanted to get another for him to have so that we could play multiplayer, since we LOVE playing smash together and couldn't play the Wii U version. So we saved up some money, and he was super excited to get it. So the next time my mom went to Walmart, he wanted to go with her to get a copy, even though I told him that they would be sold out. He wanted to check anyways, though, so he went, and then called me shortly after to tell me that they were out, but there was a new Theaterhythm game out with a CD day one edition sort of deal. We never got the first game, but we did play the demo and the game looked good, so after a little convincing I agreed that we should buy it. It's not my favorite rhythm game of all time, and we both have put COUNTLESS hours into it. Just goes to show that good things can come out of going out of your comfort zone!

    I know this is a 9 years late comment but re-watching this again today I have a new impression of "bad games you can still like" I think is worth considering.
    If you have a game that has many flaws, which you KNOW of and agree to the existence of those flaws, you CAN still have things you like about the game that allows you to "Like" the game and play/replay it ignoring the flaws just to enjoy the good parts of it. And that can be enough to say "I like this game". The same way you might still like and hang out with someone who has many flaws and red flags etc.
    As an example of this, the game Too Human from Silicon Knights, which got mostly recalled because of their failed lawsuit with Epic and following bankruptcy, had many flaws due to the lead guy in the project wanting to make it cinematic like a movie and not considering that it's meant to be a game, and many of those flaws I knew about before buying the game. And I still managed to somewhat enjoy the game knowing those flaws would come up before they'd shown up in the game. It's like saying "yeah he's an angry drunk, but..." about someone who is not the best to be around.
    To be clear, this is not to promote people with these kinds of flaws, but to sort of explain how games can similarly still be "liked" even with flaws like that. If you've ever found that you defended someone who shouldn't be defended, you'd get what I'm trying to say here. And unlike an angry drunk, poorly made games can't abuse you, they can only disappoint you.

    The whole "similar but arbitrarily different music" thing is how I feel about the Ace Attorney games.
    I remember being confused when playing Super Mario Sunshine and thinking "Why the hell does a Mario game have fully voice acted cutscenes?"
    For me, the perfect gamepad has always been the Xbox 360 controller. Everything about it except the D-Pad is perfect.
    I'm 19 years old and I've never seen a Gamecube in real life.

    You know, I think part of me enjoying sunshine comes from living in Florida, which, really looked like Delphino at the beggining of the game (minus the colorful sludge) like most of the time
    But the game was fun, it was colorful and fun, and although it wasnt Super Mario, it was a fun thing and it was well stylized. Artistically, it was enjoyable for me at the very least. As a child, I never finished it. Although I did finish it about 3 years ago. I don't think I want to play the game again in a long long time, at least not all the way through. The beginning is something I've played and enjoyed a good number of times, but god the middle of the game stagnates. The end game is completely garbage

    Bowser Jr. always confused me as well. I played Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time before I even saw Mario Sunshine in a playthrough, and I thought he was in Sunshine because of some spacial time rift where Bowser and baby Bowser were fighting over who could catch Peach first.

    • @ChibiTails
      @ChibiTails 8 років тому +1

      +MsTheCommentator What people (including these two fine gents) miss is that Yoshi's Island doesn't have Bowser JUNIOR, it has BABY Bowser. The two are different characters. Baby Bowser, Bowser Jr. Nintendo at least added the bandana/mask around Bowser Jr.'s neck so you can tell the difference.

    • @msthecommentator2863
      @msthecommentator2863 8 років тому

      ChibiTails Fair enough, but it's still basically the same sprite with minor changes. And the game didn't really need him, nor do the other games with him.

    • @ChibiTails
      @ChibiTails 8 років тому +2

      MsTheCommentator
      Oh, please. If that's how things worked the series would be missing half its characters. Toadsworth is just a Toad with a mustache, Daisy is just Peach with brown hair, LUIGI was just a palette swap...

    • @msthecommentator2863
      @msthecommentator2863 8 років тому

      ChibiTails I somewhat agree with Toadsworth on the way of looks, but he had a distinctive personality: a worrywart and Peach's right-hand Toad, sort of a father figure to her. And take a close look at Daisy, she may have a similar dress and hairstyle, but she is definitely not Princess Peach with brown hair. Peach is delicate and sweet, while Daisy is a firecracker of sass and energy. And you're really comparing everyman Mario to the cowardly, but earnest and hardworking Luigi? They may have looked the same in the originals, but nowadays, if you confuse the two, you need a vision check...
      Meanwhile, we have Bowser Jr., a backtalking miniature version of Bowser trying to give the Bros. and their friends trouble, while Baby Bowser is...wait....oh, right. It's the exact concept, but without the time paradox. I'm not trying to be rude here, but you can see why the invention of Baby Bowser was the most cutting of corners Nintendo could get.

    • @ChibiTails
      @ChibiTails 8 років тому +1

      MsTheCommentator
      No, the most cutting of corners Nintendo could get was New Super Mario Bros. Wii. :P
      Your description of their characters doesn't really do them justice. If you look at them beyond what they appear to be you'll see quite a difference: Baby Bowser is literally a spoiled baby, relying on (and bullying) Kamek for EVERYTHING and throwing tantrums to get his way. Even as an adult, Bowser's MO is just to take the princess and deploy his army to deal with everything else.
      Meanwhile, Bowser Jr. is a much more active (and creative) villain, coming up with his own schemes to mess with Mario and even kidnapping Peach himself, continually attacking Mario and spreading carnage on his own terms instead of waiting in his fortress.

    Dave, believe it or not, you actually pronounce "Yoshi" correctly (as the Japanese would pronounce it).

    • @KairuHakubi
      @KairuHakubi 9 років тому +3

      nope.
      here's a tip, you know the games in which yoshi actually says 'yoshi'? this may be a big surprise, but that's the correct pronunciation. recorded by kazumi totaka and sped up

    • @Belrodes
      @Belrodes 9 років тому

      Yeah, Kairu is correct on the pronunciation being "yo-shee". If the Japanese pronounced the name as Dave does, "yah-shee" the spelling would be Yashi.

    • @IanHollis
      @IanHollis 9 років тому

      I heard Dave's pronunciation as ヨッシー not ヤッシー. (I was watching at 1 am ~ 2 am).

      I think that might just be a british thing. Every different dialect, even within a single country, does different things with its vowels.. we learn our words at the front of the mouth, but people do the back of them kind of differently.. brits tend to swallow their Os into ahs sort of.
      as for 'merrio' that is probably hypercorrection. Realizing that they 'ah' when americans 'aa' all the time. rather, etc.
