I was in the Army and I always wondered what happened to us psychologically, how did the military alter our minds. Pre and post military are vastly different. It’s good to hear stories of what others went through that changed them profoundly.

I don't know about all the details, but they've for sure applied "the scientific method" since at least WW2, possibly WW1. I think they went over some statistics, and found that most soldiers in a fight were really hesitant to shoot at another human with an intent to kill (which is, all things considered, a good thing in a civilized society), so there's been better and better "tricks" to get a human to aim and shoot (with an intent to kill) another human.
Even to a much lesser extent, most martial art training (whether it's Karate or Tae Kwon Do or HEMA or whatever - I've mostly tried to train people in HEMA, using longswords) - but there's this hurdle to get people over. Get the newbies to actually hit one of us trainers/coaches with their 120cm/47" swords right on the head. "Come on, hit me! I'm wearing adequate protection, hit me right on the coconut!" And then they miss, and wouldn't even have hit my elbow if I'd have stuck it out 90° from my body, so it gets to "Bigger and stronger men than you - scratch that, bigger and stronger *girls* than you - have smashed me right on the head! So come on, hit me!"
I should probably mention we train with very blunt nylon swords... An unusually strong and stout fellow could possibly break a collarbone if his aim was off and his technique was good (and the coaches' reflexes were bad), but that's really about it.
But that "block" is there, for most of us. "I don't want to harm another human". Most of us don't really want to harm another living thing either, unless there's some purpose behind it. Only a nutjob goes about killing harmless creatures unless they're starving... kill the neighbour's pet rabbits for fun is sick; kill some guy's pet rabbits because you're starving and will eat them later, and that's kind of okay-ish. And that's what a good chunk of military training goes into, these days - just removing that block.

@@thossi09 I heard that most soldiers in WWI were dismal at shooting people, even though they were expert sharpshooters on the range. The military decided to change the targets from circular (like you see in the movie Sergeant York) to human shape. The result was a much higher willingness to shoot at people. I think the advent of computer games that simulate battle have helped to remove that block.
I’ve done martial arts and spent a long enough time at it to earn a black belt. I was fine with grappling, where you go to submission, but not sparing. I found it incredibly difficult to actually hit someone on purpose. It was a battle of will inside. I wanted to obey but my conscience was saying not to. I wanted to win the game but not hurt the person.

In another UA-cam vid that I saw of another former SEAL, he said that they use their bodies to test their minds. I thought that was a good way to describe it, and Mr. Blair here pretty much confirms it.

David Goggins went through hell week 3 times, and if you watch any interview of him today it doesn’t look like he’s been through it even once, and he’s supposedly the toughest man on the planet ! Maybe you should read his book, and how he did it.

When it comes to caracter building, the only bad effect is the possible contempt for people that doesn't overcome hardship of the same level.
Really perceive most people as inferior and "undeserving freeriders" in some way.

I listened while driving without reading the title and couldn't quite figure out what was going on since I don't think the seals aren't mentioned. I was wondering who'd be crazy enough to do this.
