People don't want genius, apparently, they want pre-packaged, pre-digested, insipid breathy-breathing folkies OR they want rappers talking bout jewelry, bitches and guns. But for actual music, for the few thousand who still appreciate it, Ron Sexsmith is the high priest.
@@stephenpayne9120 Exactly right. I've been into Ron since he first hit the scene. When I play or send one of his songs to someone, they always reply, "Who is this amazing artist?". Most become instant fans. And who really cares if he gets recognized widely? Those of us who know him and his material are blessed.
Have not heard any like him since Ray D or Paul MC, absolutely on the top of mine! Have a playlist with around 30 absolutely perfect tunes that I can play again and again!
Only real music fan with musical ear can know.....that's why he's not popular,it sucks,he's soooooo good, one of the Top Composer in canada and also in the world,Pop music writer could learn a thing or two if they listen Ron!
And I would like me and many, wish I had enough talent to write music that does exactly the same thing. Probably never will, but I can still appreciate Ron's music.
I love when he reaches the upper register of his voice... it's a shame he doesn't use it more often. I'd love to hear a really powerful song by him, maybe with some angry lyrics. His voice can be really powerful at times. Love this guy!!!
went see him once, small venue,,,2 songs in the power failed, he gave the band the night off and played alone as the audience kept shush...and it was beautiful..
@insight36 Interesting comment ... I had the good fortune of being able to see Ron play many times when he made his start - at age 16 or so in a local tavern.....when all he did was other people's material ... and he ALWAYS, ALWAYS packed the place and 'lit it up' ...I NEVER saw a night where he could get off stage with fewer than 5 encores - now that's Power...it's always come from somewhere very deep inside him.... and btw, he has always been just the nicest guy, never a hint of arrogance.
Lovely to see a comment from someone who knew Ron in those early days (the Dakota Tavern was it?) & I only wish I'd been there too. Only got to know about Ron last year (through the film) & already been to see him 3x this last year in the Uk. Amazing performer & as you say, no huge ego. Wish him every success as he deserves it!
MODERN DAYMCCARTNEY.Should have recorded it like this...strictly acoustic. The melody and the emotional power of his voice reminds me of IF I FELL by The Beatles You can't hear this in the studio version. It's buried below the slick production. Hope this live version is relased on a CD.
Sexsmith is the an authentic artist, one of kind, like a Lennon, McCartney, Marley or Ben Harper. I wish he would stay away from producers like Bob Rcok
Swede, Ron has always sounded best while playing without the help of his very talented band. That's all I'm saying. And, as the years go by, Ron's guitar playing improves drastically, lessening the need for a band. The producers that he's worked with almost always miss the mark. I cannot think of a single tune where the use of a band helped a Ron Sexsmith song. I'm honestly not trying to be too critical. I just think it's easy to degrade a sound that starts out as perfect.
I agree with you. The only exception I can think of off the top of my head, is his outdoor performance of "Seem to Recall" in Stockholm with just his drummer, which was excellent. A drummer isn't a band though.
Douglas Hartt ~ Fair & interesting point. I liked the quote from Ben Harper “Playing solo (really) lets the song be the song” … I love the way Gil Welch & Dave Rawlings also stick to the essential elements & resist any temptation to ornament it. Yes, would have to agree, I prefer Ron in solo acoustic mode too - 👍😁
If you can find it there's a wonderful documentary film called Love Shines about the making of the record Long Player Late Bloomer which goes some way to explaining why Ron felt like he needed the big Bob Rock production for his new songs. That doc turned me onto Ron Sexsmith and I bought and fell in love with the album as a result. I can see how the record might seem overblown coming to it from these great acoustic versions but hopefully it will grow on you, it really deserves to!
Yeah, but I guess they do a longer show and edit it too fit. After every show, there are a few extra songs from each guest that they put up for a week or so on the website. I was just lucky to notice it. :)
:-) Actually it was at the Lions Tavern (or as we called it, "The Lion") ... In Port Dalhousie --> just adjacent to St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada!! .... I remember wondering in my mind back then how the "electricity" he generated compared to the atmosphere created by the Beatles in the clubs they first started playing at! I only wish there were videos/movies of his performances at the Lion! ... Magical !
What a fabulous song. I hope for his sake he makes it big. He sure has put in his dues. But maybe we should keep him to ourselves and be selfish. I can't wait to see him live. Anyone know if he will tour the States ?? anyway nsince my computer won,t let me post this yet. I have been following his music nfor over 12 years now. I came accross a live cdr of his early songs if anyone is interested. Strawberry Blond, Words we never use, A version of Secret Heart & more
@insight36 PS ... I agree with you....an 'angry' type song where he really released the kind of energy that grabs people's attention (and I know he's got plenty of ability in reserve from having seen him in his early days...but has apparently chosen not to tap in his own song-writing so far), could be just the thing that would rocket him to the top of the charts .... had sensed it but never fully - as you have so well; imo --> Good Job :-)
Recorded this on my HDR, didn't know who Ron was then but I keep going back to it time after time, fast forwarding past Graham Gouldman and Fran Healey, absolutely f**king amazing!!! Bought the album Late Bloomer and was frankly disappointed, all he needs is a guitar and his voice, not all this over-produced sh*t... Long Live Ron Sexsmith!
LATE BLOOMER does has some great moments, and is a fine production, but I agree. Ron's songs stand alone and don't need ALL of the production behind them. But at the time he did the album, Ron was trying to create something that might propel him to becoming more popular with the masses. I would recommend the film done about Ron back in 2011 called LOVE SHINES, which documents the recording of that album with producer Bob Rock. Might change your mind a bit about the album. Dig, DmGrkj
Strange the Beeb didn't include this in the final cut..very strange. There's a bit of McCartney in the Sexsmith voice (as pointed out by Graham Goldman in the programme)
@13Silveraven . i would like a copy of the ,bbc special , if you have it , as i missed the first 15 minutes when it was screened on t v . love to hear the cd too . i do have the , late bloomer special cd/ dvd live limited edition ,live dvd, if you would like a copy . cheers jimmy .
I agree that it is understandable. But I still far prefer the versions of songs on this programme. I heard these (actually, if I recall this was shown on BBC on the same night as Love Shines) before the album too and I do think the songs were spoiled. That's not to say it's a bad album. Just could have been great.
Ron Sexsmith the most brilliant underrated singer songwriter currently ploughing his trade.
Jonathan Bailey unquestionably
True but I believe you wanted to say "plying his trade".
@@Alsatiagent Not many people know he moonlights as a farmer.
"Born out of time" as Elvis Costello said. He's a huge fan.

Humility and luminous perception, they walk hand in hand in Sexsmith's art.
It's good to be walking the planet with you, Mr. Sexsmith.
That's a brilliant comment. Thank you.
Ron is a treasure. In fact, he's a genius. This is as beautiful a musical moment as you'll ever hear.
The lyrics touch the soul. The music calms the heart. The voice speaks to the spirit. ❤️
This man has a rare genius... if only it was recognised more widely.

This gentle voiced gentleman struck me with his gentle voice 25 years ago
Not too many voices that can bring me close to tears, but Ron can.
perfection. pure and simple. things people struggle to articulate just pour out of Ron.

My favourite Ron Sexsmith Song! Love his voice, artistry.
Wonderful, wonderful talent. His ear for melody is very rare.

HIs guitar solo was so graceful. Wow.
Yeah, smooth like butter. 🙂👍
The man is a genius.
What a talented songwriter and performer!
Yep. He's pretty good!!
The sort of song that comes to the soul at night, just before sleep.
I just keep coming back for more....such a great song, voice, songwriter, etc...
Simply gorgeous. ..it has a lyrical beauty & a sweet melody....the beatles ballads come to mind.
Thankyou...I cry everytime I listen to this song. To create something that evokes such emotion in people is a wonderful legacy 🙂
And I would like me and many, wish I had enough talent to write music that does exactly the same thing. Probably never will, but I can still appreciate Ron's music.

Um 😐...he’s pretty chilled mate 😆😂🤣 - there are enough angry buggers out there☝️😤😡 - can see what yr gettin’ at tho 😉
I’m sorry it took so long to discover this great music. Your lyrics are so soul-felt. Brilliant!
Now that's what I call a great love song.
I much prefer this version to the studio one. Stunning.
Amazing performance by a songwriting legend. I just got Ron's Love Shines DVD from Paperny Entertainment.
WONDERFUL. Shivers up my spine.
This song is so emotional, beautiful and make me remind of great memories.
i seriously have never seen a comment section this positive
Hmmm...I uploaded this in 720p. I guess UA-cam reduced it. Oh well..at least it's still up. :)
This song strengthened me when i was down with no help near.
Immanuel Bobby I liked your comment because the same happen to me once in a while
Heads up …☝️ the trick is NOT to think too much 🤔 Nothing of worth to be found there 😊 Onward & Upward my friends 🙏
Simply beautiful, speaks to my heart...

That sounds amazing. 🙂👍
Lucky for us, we get different versions and sound scapes of Ron's songs. The best songs can always be stripped down and still sound amazing.
Very special talented guy. Love his gentle manner.
Our wedding song we danced in the window to.
Us too.
Going to see Ron tonight - Danforth Music Hall! 'Love you, Ron!
Madeleine Hague I saw him last week. great show... you'll love it. :)
Me too!! It was such a wonderful and generous concert. Beautiful music…. beautiful all.

Buy the Japanese version - there's a solo acoustic version included
Ron Sexsmith and his guitar orchestra. The guitar playing is awesome, as well as the singing and the songs.

Thanks for the added info. Who knows, maybe someone reading this did record some of those performances & will post them.
